The Nobel Peace Prize finds a safely nice place to go.

For all we make fun of the peace prize (and deservedly so), most of them do go to people and groups that earned it. It's only when they stoop to giving it to someone famous that they step in it. The true heroes usually labour in the shadows.

Just as well. Trump has already gotten the benefit of his NPP nominations in the media, without being a phony about it.

rehajm said...

Congratulations- good for them!

It took ten comments to make the committee's announcement tweet about Trump. More than I thought it would. There's a Nobel in physiology and medicine for the group that cures Trump Derangement Syndrome...

And JournOLists are reporting that Trump was passed over for the award. Hint: he wasn't nominated for this year's prize.

So much journalisming going on....

Wimps. Can't give Trump, who truly deserves one, a NPP before the election.

stevew said...

That's nice, but WFP is in the business of bringing food to the world and its hungry not engaged in the effort to bring about peace.

Never heard of them.

Instead of to the person actually making peace, our President, Donald J. Trump!!!

Good Choice.

Predictable.

Sorry, lining up allies in case of war with Iran should not earn a peace prize.

Ho Hum. This is news?

Jersey Fled said...

Oh. The World Food Programme is an agency of the United Nations.

Now I get it.

BTW they can't even spell Program right.

Someone should start a pool for how long it will take the anti-science left to start complaining about honoring an organization that feeds GMOs to impoverished people of color.

are they the same guys we see in the press for requiring sexual favors for food?

Todd said...

What a "pussy" move! Can't have OrangeManBad be recognized for anything positive! Yet another example of why that "prize" means nothing! Arafat got one, Obama got one. Could have restored SOME of its original dignity of they had awarded it to Trump but I guess that was a bridge too far. Who will win it next year? The U.N. peace keepers that rape kids?

Darrell said...

More than half the aid goes to thugs and rebels to controal the populace and $Millions more is stolen by corrupt local officials and relatives in inflated transport cost schemes and such.

But we didn't give the Peace Prize to Trump!!! Heroes we are!

Trump was nominated for the 2021 prize. Thrice.

Trump wasn't nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize! His nomination is for 2021.

WFP has some cool machines to ride in.

Jourolists are making this all about Trump!

-Althouse commentariat, making this all about Trump.

Personally, I'd like to thank The World Food Programme For keeping the soldiers of African dictators and war lords well fed, keeping them in power.

wendybar said...

Who gives a shit about Peace in the Middle East. They may as well have given Obama a second one.

I see WFP has been in existence since 1961. Why couldn't they win it before now, say.... 2009 ?

World Food Program provides "inclusion" for chubby LGBT+ folks.

I can't tell if the one has man-boobs or if it is a person of transgender, harassed by transphobic Hondurans.

Worthy selection

I'd like to see the peanut butter and jelly sandwich win the award. This inexpensive, easy to prepare sandwich has delivered essential nutrients to some of the world's poorest children, and all without cow farts.

Ever wonder where sleepy Joe plagiarized his campaign slogan from?

The UN has been using it since the 40s.

As long as been alive, which is awhile now, we've been striving to defeat world hunger. I think it's possible we're going about it wrong. Or that there are those who are vested in the problem not going away.

World Food Program—ruining markets for local farmers around the world.

Someone really needs to take a hard look at what these NGOs do to the sustainability of local agriculture. It isn’t pretty. But it is so much more fun to engage in virtue signalling!

I am just engaging in some cruel neutrality here.

Doing good with other peoples' money. Some of which was given voluntarily.

Good on them, I suppose. Feeding people is good, even if it is on others' dimes. Better than many of the alternatives for the PP.

Who here thought otherwise?

Peace in the Middle East?

Any orange person could do it...can't be that hard.

Where do you think the cash prize for the Nobel will end up?

mikee said...

Oxfam, back in the early 1980s, had so much support that my college canceled one evening meal per year and donated the money saved on food and salaries, to feed the starving in Africa and Central America and probably other places. That night, every year, it paid to get to the McDonalds off campus early because the line backed up into the hundreds by 6:00.

So much for feeling the pain of missing a meal, which was the main selling point of the whole exercise. Woke virtue signalling has been around a long, long time.

I'll be honest. I'm relieved it went to a legitimate organization that benefits humanity. I would have loved for it to go to Trump, but that was never going to happen. The prize has lost its luster after so many ridiculous winners over the years. How do they even define "peace," anyway? But this feels like a genuinely appropriate decision. Thank God a leftist organization or pseudo-celebrity didn't win this time.

Trump can wait for his second term, after he creates peace between Iran and Israel, and China and Taiwan, and after Korea becomes a single country,

They were the object of a brilliant if wildly politically incorrect Sam Kinnison comedy routine as well. “This is sand. Nothing grows in sand” ETC.

You won't hear this much. From another source:

"“I know I’m not deserving of an award like this, but all the men and women around the world in the World Food Program and our partners who put their lives on the line every day,” David Beasley told The Associated Press by phone from Niger, where he was visiting Friday.

"The organization has long been headed by an American, and U.S. President Donald Trump nominated the former Republican governor of South Carolina for the post in 2017."

Bob Smith said...

Sebastian said it best.

“So, who grows the food that the program distributes? Why don't they share the prize?

Wait until the Wusan Flu reduces Western ag output and the WFP doesn’t have food to distribute.

mikee said...

Just to note the obvious, from Wikipedia:
WFP operations are funded by voluntary donations principally from governments of the world, and also from corporations and private donors. In 2018 funding was US$ 7.2b, of which the largest donors were the United States government ($2.5b) and the European Union ($1.1b).

China donated $34M to the WFP for an emergency fund of some kind in 2020, and is also receiving aid from WFP for 150million rural impoverished people needing food. They also sent 8700 tons of rice in 2019 to Somalia and South Sudan. China has a trade surplus with the US of almost $350b.

China could feed a few of their own people for the price of one Spratley island, I'd guess.

I heard an NPR report about this this morning, and it said that the UN World Food Programme was dedicated to ensuring that hunger should never be used as a weapon of war. As of course it has been, many times, and not just in Africa and Central America. Think Paris, 1870. Think Germany, 1918. (Enemies learn from one another, nyet?) Starving out the opposing populace has a very long history, and to the extent that the World Food Programme has changed the norms here, it deserves its prize.

And, of course, this is not the NPP for which Trump has been nominated thrice. That's next year's.

MikeR said...

Well, Trump has only brought two countries to make peace with Israel so far. When it gets past half-a-dozen, for sure they'll give it to him. #2021

It's a good thing to highlight the difficulties with food in most parts of the World. I say that from a place of Privilege of course. Teaching people how to adapt to their changing climate, food-wise, would be a more worthy goal. If you just give people food, they won't starve in the near-term, but what does it do for long-term survival?

SensibleCitizen said...

If Trump is reelected, and he continues to advance peace in the middle east, he could still be nominated and awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Can you blame them for taking a "wait and see" attitude given Obama's performance?

Peace in the middle east is an iconic and illusive goal that goes back centuries. The person with the code for getting it done will almost certainly win the NPP.

The libs won't even allow mention of Trump's Nobel nomination on his Wiki page.

Uh, yeah. Right. That's the reason the Nobel Committee is waiting......

the Nobel Peace Prize was to be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses.”

SEE DRAGO...and the Orange typhoid Mary fits none of the requirements for the Prize..Anyone can be nominated...Palestine totally rejects the Netayahu /trump deal...(both crimnals) sorry Just because Obama got one and trump never will he cant stand it...IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!
