Well Biden is using Nixonian campaign tactics saying we need to elect him to find out if he will pack the Supreme Court. Very reminiscent of Nixon's "I have a secret plan to end the war". We all know how that turned out.

Gold Stars are awarded to the immediate families of service members lost in action. A Purple Heart is awarded to those wounded in action.

Gold stars are for the families of KIAs. With your extensive military history, one would think you'd know that.

The problem with the debates comes largely from the Sunday talk show format, namely, a (short) block of time in which a question is posed and supposed to be answered before the next question or the next segment. All the interviewee has to do is filibuster until the time limit for a question runs out. The time-segment constraint means there is no pursuit by the interviewer of answers.

Instead of the current debate format, I propose that the interviewer pursue a question until an answer is achieved. Does the Biden-Harris ticket favor packing the Supreme Court? Yes or no or we haven't decided. What would the President do if no clear answer is forthcoming from the election in terms of succession? How does Kamala Harris distinguish between Tara Reade with Biden and the Kavanaugh accuse on the issue of believe the woman?

What this interviewer pursuit tactic means is that there will not be time to address some topics, so the lesser topics would have to be held till the end in case there is not enough time.

that's NOTHING! Cal (the democrat adulterer that was sleeping with an employee) came out with an ad where he talks about "NC BBQ", while standing in front of a GAS GRILL, with a plate of HOTDOG BUNS). This is a SIN! this is the sort of thing that gets you sent to HELL!

So Yelp has decided to flag restaurants that have been accused of racist behavior, and. include a link to the news article that has the accusation.

Just a horrible idea.

Howard claims to be a former Marine but when I asked him where he got his "trigger time" he replied with an answer alluding to a stateside location.

I found that interesting....

Faced with the prospect of losing to George McGovern in 1972, Dick Nixon fell back on plan B — mine Haiphong Harbor (which the military and diplomatic conventional wisdom said would lead to World War III, except that it didn’t) and use B-52s to bomb Hanoi into rubble. Plan B worked. Sort of.

I have a list of 57 restaurants chains who are secretly affiliated with White Supremacism.

Joe McCarthy was right that some Communists infiltrated the government, but I imagine it was nowhere near as many of the Neo-Nazi, White Supremacist Trump supporters who are trying to take over our country.

I think we all understand that the closest Howard ever got to the military is his GI Joe with Kung Fu grip.

A truly awesome graphical article talking about the spread of COVID-19 in the US last Winter.

I pointed a particular fact way back in March right here in one of the Althouse threads- the fact that the virus showed up in multiple states all at about the same time in mid March as confirmed by the PCR test was definitive proof that the virus had arrived months earlier- it was only in March that anyone had the ability to confirm any cases, and even then it was obvious that we were only finding a small percentage of them- the people ill enough to show up at an emergency room. We will, in retrospect, find it arrived in the early Fall at the latest.

Media folks are throwing a round a number that says Trump's time at Walter Reed cost $100,000. But a little digging shows that the Regeneron antibody cocktail was just a tad expensive. Our government gave the Regeneron folks $450 million to produce 300,000 doses of the experimental stuff. Trump got 8 ounces of the stuff but the standard size is 2.4 oz. So an ounce of the cocktail costs $625 or a total of $5 grand for the Trump overdose.

So The Lincoln Project has figured out what Trump will be doing after he loses the election - SELLING REGENERON

Now, when a business gains attention for reports of racist conduct, Yelp will place a new Business Accused of Racist Behavior Alert on their Yelp page to inform users, along with a link to a news article where they can learn more

Spain economic situation -

As I said earlier this week, the Spanish recovery has not been V-shaped.
GDP info is delayed, last numbers are for 2Q 2020, but current GDP "growth" forecast for EOY is at -11.2%
Partly this is because the effect of Covid on the vital international travel and tourism sector has been extreme. The summer season is gone. Partly this is because of continuing domestic lockdowns and restrictions. Its interesting that the courts for once have pushed back hard at the government insistence in re-imposing lockdowns in Madrid this week, saying the national government has no authority to force this on local governments.

Sounds similar to the arguments about whether the US Fedgov can force States to do things, no?

The US has seen a V-shaped recovery, and currently you are looking for a wash in GDP - fully caught up to Dec 2019 by EOY - of course that includes a lot of "stimulus".

But then nearly everyone else on Earth has "stimulus" of one form or another at this point. Employment is another matter.

Politics has not intruded much into the Spanish economy this year, as there was no scope for it due to the national emergency that has precluded any bright ideas. However, the ruling parties have released an economic plan, of sorts. This is the first major policy initiative by the leftist coalition government.

Since the government is the PSOE (The old Socialists) and the even leftier Podemos, this thing is what one should expect from these people. It relies heavily on spending EU funds and has its ration of SJWisms.

This is a more or less OK English translation -

Axios claims AG Barr has notified Republicans no Durham report before the election. The paranoids think it’s a coverup, the optimists think the deeper the swamp the longer it takes. If the Democrats win it might all disappear, but will it really and how’s that work? If the Republicans win they can toy with the ball of string that Hillary left behind.

no one in NC has any problems with people grilling; but it's got NOTHING to do with BBQ!

hell! people in NC don't think that briskets have Anything to do with BBQ.
It's Pig! (the Front Shoulder* of the pig, that is)
If you ask people in NC to consider other things to be BBQ; they'll ask:
you mean, like using the whole pig, instead of the front shoulder?

Front Shoulder* that's right! Piedmont style or bust!

I lived a sheltered existence in parts of my youth, but from my days in Asheboro I recall there was no such thing as BBQ. There was barbecue or Bar-B-Que or Bar-B-Q...and a whole pig was only associated with a pig pickin', where the old boy was cooked in a pit. Only in recent history have I seen NC whole hog cooked on grates...

Fall colors are finally becoming dominant here. Autumn is in the air, except for the Indian summer we'll be getting this weekend. (Yeah, I used that term. F**k off.)

Looking forward to reading the new book on the English Civil War that just arrived, not purchased from Amazon.

Autumn is here, winter will arrive in due time. It's all in the cycles of this world.

Merny11,

Sorry- the Twitter link I followed to the story allowed me to read it without a subscription- but when I linked above, I took the URL from the story itself. I went back to the original twitter link I read it from last night, and it was now pay-walled. Sorry.

The main thrust of the article was calculating the probability of the first 10 community spread cases for the various states- this lead them to conclude that the US got its first COVID infections inside the border in early January in New York, California, and Washington State. This is, of course, based on the analysis of confirmed cases, but that is the problem- you couldn't even test for the disease before February, so this almost surely means they are still underestimating how long COVID spread in the US- it is probably only in the last 3 months we have found even 10% of the actual infections at any given moment- in February it was probably far less than 1% because only the really sick even got a test.
