"Insisting that the Hunter Biden laptop is fake is a trap. So is insisting that it’s real."

A WaPo headline that made me laugh. I am a little desperate for laughs, but still. I laughed. This is a column by Thomas Rid, who wrote "Active Measures: The Secret History of Disinformation and Political Warfare" and a professor of strategic studies at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Excerpt:
[I]n the likely continued absence of certainty either way, the Biden leaks deserve the full potential-disinformation treatment. This means three concrete things. First, every individual little fact — every email, every text, every photo — must be independently verified when data is surfaced in such a suspicious way, not just one piece of information. Genuine photos, for example, could be there simply to add credibility to forged emails surfaced along with the photos — shielding a few forgeries with genuine content would be a time-tested active measures tactic.
Second, the absence of a denial by the Biden campaign or Hunter himself should not be treated as a tacit admission of authenticity. Mixing facts with forgeries has another time-tested effect: It sets a trap for the victim. If Hunter or the Biden campaign started selectively denying pieces of the reporting ostensibly from the laptop, they would give oxygen to the operation, extend its life-cycle and get entangled in a losing battle about discussing what’s fact and what’s not....

This second point is a response to something I said yesterday: "If they're not real, Biden would strongly, clearly assert that the emails are fake. What reason could there be to fail to make a clear assertion? I think the answer is that he knows it's an assertion that can be proven false, leaving him plainly exposed as an outrageous liar."

Rid's third point is:  "[W]e must resist the temptation to jump to premature conclusions on 'a Russian plant' without good evidence — 'classic earmarks' are not nearly enough. The Mac Shop story, and even the files, could still be genuine, no matter how unusual the setup sounds.... If we continue to ascribe too much power and influence to shadowy foreign spies, downplay our own agency and blame our domestic political problems on outside interference, then we are not only behaving like the old-school Soviet active measures playbook wants us to behave — worse, we’re becoming a little more like Russia ourselves."

Actually, yes it should. Moreover, a third party who received some of that Email traffic has authenticated it.

I don't object to what this individual says. In fact, I just spent nearly 4 years wishing the same criteria had been applied to the accusations against Trump.

Obviously, it's possible that something fake is mixed in with what's authentic, but isn't it clear by now that the laptop is real and that it was really Hunter Biden's? The Biden camp's refusal to deny that is telling. Now it's up to Team Biden and the people coming out with the new Russia hoax now, to prove their case for forgery, if they can.

I'm Full of Soup said...

So the WaPo is finally acknowledging the existence of the laptop?

This is all so stupid.

The emails are obviously genuine for a variety of reasons.

This article was written in a publication that bleated about Russian Collusion and supported impeaching Trump for the things Biden is on video and record doing.

The words came from Biden's mouth.

You can no longer claim stupidity.

You are evil if you vote for democrats.

The cybersecurity research community immediately knew, with a good degree of confidence, what was going on in 2016, literally on the day the Democratic National Committee hack, and then the first leaks resulting from it, became public.

This is not true. There are still strong disagreements over whether the DNC hack was a Russian op. Democrats and their security allies say it is, everyone else says we don't know who was behind it.

Also the author says we had good forensic evidence of the DNC hack. This is also not true. The security company kept the server, did not share it with anyone else, and ultimately destroyed it.

Methinks we have here a case of motivated reasoning.

So, progs, suppose, as you do not want to acknowledge yet, that the Biden family did benefit from deals with Ukrainians, Russians, and Chinese, and that Joe was at least aware, does that constitute corruption to you and discredit Joe in any way?

Right. Didn't think so. So why waste words?

Use common sense.

It had not been denied.

The 'Russians' would have to have set this up almost a year ago.

Other people received the emails and have maintained that they are real.

I'm kind of surprised nobody has asked the FBI if they've checked the laptop for fingerprints or DNA (if you know what I mean).

If it walks like a duck...

What can you say? Biden is corrupt, he's a plagiarist, and he's a liar. He told at least 6 BIG lies during the last debate alone. Not just the usual lies about Trump, but lies about his own actions and positions. It'd be nice if the sainted "Moderates" and "independents" cared, but only seem to care when the MSM cares. Otherwise, they're happy as clams about corruption, lies, and incompetence.

Never have I seen the Press, Social Media, and the Entertainment Industry so filled with hate at the President of the United States. Their behavior has been disgusting. And we now learned today that Obama's FBI and GSA was keeping records on Trump's transition team that were NOT supposed to be kept. These records were then unethically handed over to Mueller. But it looks like every corrupt member of Obama's FBI/CIA/DOJ will skate.

Where were these people during the Steele Dossier hysteria? It's revealing these standards are only produced to defend Dems or other leftists.

Yancey Ward said...

What I would say to Rid is this- "Now do the Steele Dossier, you dumb shit."

Compare the two situations- we literally have people on record, under their own fucking names, verifying the individual e-mails that the NYPost has published- people who literally received the same e-mails at the time. We have the shopowner's story, told by himself, not some anonymous "source familiar with the story". In the case of the Steele Dossier, WaPo and all the other had nothing that verified those "facts"- literally fucking nothing. The FBI, in January of 2017, two weeks before Trump was even the President, had testimony from Steele's main source that the Dossier was a bunch of nonsense that wasn't supposed to be taken seriously. There aren't two realities really playing here- there is just honesty and dishonesty at this point. The media are just playing dumb now, and Rid more or less acknowledges this in what he doesn't write.

Richard Dolan said...

Amazing that the WaPo (and Team Dem more generally) can't see the damage they are doing to themselves, even with the true believers, as each day brings more emails, testimonials and the like, disproving to a fair-thee-well the idea that the Russians had loaded up Hunter's laptop with fake emails. While WaPo was publishing this exercise in wishful thinking, the WSJ published Strassel's long take-down of the Biden's China caper. Not hard to predict which will age better.

The WaPo's efforts are even more insanely self-destructive because the flood of revelations all serve to prove what's been completely obvious for a long time: the Bidens, like the Clintons before them, were not going to let their shot at raking in huge amounts of money go to waste. Hunter and Brother Jim were just the fronts; what they were selling was the Big Guy (because that's all they had to sell -- Hunter and Jim had nothing else anyone was remotely interested in).

For a team that impeached Trump because of a phone call, can't the Dems see where this is leading, since it isn't going away and the focus on all of it will become much more intense if Biden wins. If they think they will be able to squelch it, that idea is so last century.

Keep in mind that Russian Intelligence placed advertisements on Facebook. For example, Russian Intelligence placed an advertisement that showed Satan arm-wrestling Jesus.

The purpose of the ads was to cause Americans to lose their faith in our Democracy and to vote against Hillary Clinton.

Donald Trump's campaign manager had provided insider polling data that revealed to Russian Intelligence that some US states were so-called "battleground states" in the election. Russian Intelligence then placed those ads particularly for the Facebook users in those "battleground states".

Secret communications were carried back and forth between the Kremlin and Trump Tower by Trump's foreign-policy advisor Carter Page. As a reward for that service, Carter Page was promised 40% of Russia's petroleum industry.

Another foreign-policy advisor, Michael Flynn, was paid to attend a Moscow banquet celebrating an anniversary of the RT cable-television network in December 2015. Flynn, Vladimir Putin and Green Party candidate Jill Stein sat at the same banquet table.

Another foreign-policy advisor, George Papadopoulos met with Joseph Mifsud, a secret agent of Russian Intelligence. Mifsud revealed to Papadopoulos that Russian Intelligence had hacked Hillary Clinton's computer and would provide stolen e-mails to the Trump campaign, in order to help Trump defeat Clinton in the Presidential election.

Now the Russian interference in our election is happening again, with Hunter Biden's supposed laptop. Fifty former officials of our US Intelligence Community warn that this story about Hunter Biden is Russian disinformation.

Putin again is trying to make Americans lose faith in our Democracy and thus to vote against the Democrat candidates in our election.

Wake up, sheeple !!!!

Sounds a bit desperate to me. All that Hunter would need to do, if this guy is correct, is say “Never saw that email before, so it couldn’t have been on the laptop”. Giuliani would be shown to have put the whole thing together, if he can’t show that the email or photo was indeed on Hunter’s laptop. Hunter can’t do that, of course, because the emails and the photos were on his laptop. And crying forgery when none exists would be worse than pretending the whole scandal away.

Cruel neutrality is now officially a farce.

Biden's tax returns are public. Trump's are not and Trump has repeatedly and falsely claimed that he is unable to produce them.

The Wall Street Journal fact side reported that no China deal happened and that the deal papers show no role for Biden. Not noted by you. Conversely, it is undisputed that hundreds of folks with business which Trump has power over have paid tens of millions of dollars to businesses that Trump actually owns and monitors. Not noted by you.

Biden denies participating in any such deal. There is literally nothing to the contrary. Even the WSJ opinion piece, at best, if everything said in every email is true, shows that when Biden was out of office Biden's son offered him an opportunity to participate in such a deal and he flat out declined. In the meantime, Trump has a secret bank account in China, and in the debate he flat out lied by saying it had been closed. Not noted by you.

How about it, Althouse. Doesn't cruel neutrality require neutral evaluation of the evidence?

I conclude that you don't pursue neutrality because you know it would require you to say things--or to cast a vote--that your overwhelmingly right wing readers and, perhaps more important, linkers, would not accept. As DJT might say, "SAD!"

Ha! Ha! Ha! (Again)

#1 and #3 are false. #2 may be accurate but so what?

Yes, Papadopoulis met with Mifsud, but there was never any evidence that he was a Russia asset, and plenty that he was not. He was western, not Russian, intelligence. He taught spycraft at the Link Campus University in Rome where the two met. CIA and FBI agents have attended there, as well as spies from throughout Western Europe. If Mifsud had been A Russian Asset, it likely would have been the biggest breach in western intelligence, at least since the Russians, and esp the Chinese, hacked Crooked Hillary’s illegal private email server between 2009 and 2013, because he knew the identity of a large number of western spies. Also, notable, is that there are photos of Mifsud with both Downer and with Halper (who was being paid by a US IC agency), both of whom figured prominently in SpyGate (thank you QAnons for finding the photos). Papadopoulis was being set up by this trio, with Mifsud setting the hook by telling him that the Russians had Clinton’s emails, and Downer reeling him in by asking about the emails. They were very likely working together. This is just the sort of spy craft taught at Link. Both the four FISA applications and the Mueller Report claimed that Mifsud was a Russian asset, but with no real proof. And, if he turns out to have been western intelligence, as is highly likely, given his career in western intelligence, the entire Trump/Russia Collusion edifice crumbles, leaving the underlying spy craft identifying the CIA as the likely culprit in the setup (no one should be surprised that Gina Haspel, current CIA Director, was head of their London station, where this all was likely orchestrated from, at the time - who better to protect the agency than someone involved up to their eyebrows in the illegal operation). Oh, and it turns out that this was all setup by the Clinton campaign to distract the American public fro her illegal use of her private email server to conduct government business while she was Sec of State.

Carter Page was a CIA asset reporting everything he did to them. He was also reporting to the FBI much of the time, and testifying in court for them as late as March of 2016. He started getting suspicious when the FBI all of a sudden quit accepting his offers to debrief them starting that summer. He very likely couldn’t have been a Russian asset, after having burned at least three of their operatives that year.

As for Gen Flynn, he reported everything he did to the DIA, the intelligence agency he headed until he was fired by Obama for his opposition to his feckless Iranian policy. And, yes, that apparently included that trip where he shared a table with Putin.

Good grief. No need to jump through all those tortured hoops to determine battleground states. Just turn on any US cable news network.

I have no doubt Russia hacked the DNC emails in 2016. But how is it disinformation when it is absolutely true? So I really don't care who is behind the laptop, as long as it is true and accurate.

Every country "meddles" in every election. We are no different. But placing dumb ads is all innocuous and no different than what any PAC does. Uncovering corruption? I’m becoming more and more convinced that the Biden’s actions were business as usual in Washington and that’s what drove the desire for the Mueller investigation of Trump. Everyone in Washington just assumed that if you investigated trump long enough, something like this would turn up because everyone is doing it.

They were investigating Trump long before Mueller.

FBI has confirmed it through anonymous sources. If this was anti Trump it would be plenty. If it’s disinformation, the FBI has had it for almost a year to suss it out and pounce. It’s not like there was no search for collusion going on during the time that consumed the national attention.

If Rudy is altering them, he is taking an awful risk. He’s kind of old for prison.

The idea that it would be a trap to deny emails that look incredibly incriminating is ridiculous, if they are really fake. The real trap being worried about here is a kind of perjury trap, since, you now, he would be lying and the FBI has the evidence.

He kind of departed from logic on that one.

"Hunter or the Biden campaign started selectively denying pieces of the reporting ostensibly from the laptop, they would give oxygen to the operation,’

It’s not an operation. If Rudy took fabrications and handed them to the FBI a year in advance and presented them as evidence in a complaint to the Biden swamp creature Delaware State Police? Well then I assume that they can hear Rudy’s balls clanging together on seismographs in Tokyo.

Biden's tax returns are public. Trump's are not and Trump has repeatedly and falsely claimed that he is unable to produce them.

Trump is in the middle of an IRS audit. Want his tax returns? Get the IRS to back off.

The Wall Street Journal fact side reported that no China deal happened and that the deal papers show no role for Biden.

Liar. What they reported was that Joe Biden wasn't listed in the paperwork. Which we already knew. Hunter was holding a "10% stake for the big guy."

Hunter was holding it to keep Joe out of the papers.

Biden denies participating in any such deal. There is literally nothing to the contrary.

Biden is a know liar. See: fracking

Hunter Biden's business partner says that Joe was involved. That is not "nothing", and it is to the contrary.

Even the WSJ opinion piece, at best, if everything said in every email is true, shows that when Biden was out of office Biden's son offered him an opportunity to participate in such a deal and he flat out declined.

Lie. He took his 10%.

In the meantime, Trump has a secret bank account in China, and in the debate he flat out lied by saying it had been closed.

Yeah, it's so "secret" it was in his publicly filed disclosures. As was the fact that Deutsche Bank velds to mortgage on Trump Tower, another thing you lying lefties was "a secret".

Feel free to provide a link proving me wrong here. Proving, not "claiming"

Among those named in the papers as using the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca to set up offshore entities are Gabrielle Fialkoff, who served as Clinton’s finance director during her first campaign for the Senate in New York, according to a report published online at mcclatchydc.com.

Fialkoff is also a senior adviser to Mayor de Blasio and director of the city’s Office of Strategic Partnership.

Another name from the papers is billionaire Frank Giustra, a Canadian mining magnate and longtime crony of Bill Clinton who has donated $100 million to the Clinton Foundation.

Yet another name from the paper is The Chagoury Group, an international developer based in West Africa that has pledged $1 billion in projects to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Additional names include Chinese billionaire Ng Lap Seng, who was at the center of a Democratic fund-raising scandal during the Clinton administration, and Marc Rich, the notorious international fugitive pardoned by Bill Clinton in his final hours as president in 2001, McClatchy reported.

A lot of the evidence leads to a strong inference that the laptop is what it is purported to be and that the emails are genuine, but what I think rises asymptotically close to deduction is the fact that the FBI isn’t leaking like a sieve that these emails are fake and show signs of tampering. You can’t just go in and futz around with text, there are checksums that change each time you change a character, and these checksums have checksums, all part of the error correction that is required when transmitting data over a network. Not to mention timestamps, that show up in multiple places. You can’t just change the time on the computer clock and fiddle with emails, it shows up elsewhere. There will be a record that you changed the time on the computer. They could easily, for example, request email data from Frank Luntz, who we now know is a Democrat shill in deep cover, and match that up.

Surely the Washington Post has sources in the FBI? I don’t read that rag, but I would be curious to know if they called any of them. JKLOL! No they didn’t because they didn’t want to hear what they are certain is true, that the stuff is authentic, just as those sources told Fox News when they were asked by that outfit.

Innocent me though that disinformation was information that was false, when really it’s information that undermines whatever narrative the “good guys” are pushing at whatever time and it has nothing to do with whether it is true or false.

But this is the country that put Martha Stewart in jail for claiming she was innocent, without ever proving the underlying crime, and our former FBI director, James Comey, bragged about it. This is the country that won’t let political prisoner Michael Flynn go free even though the prosecution withheld exculpatory evidence, and the judge knows it.

Impeachment always looked like an act of desperation to me, the harebrained and implausible theories of “bribery” and “obstruction of justice” It’s clear now that it was a hail Mary from their own 1 yard line.

At Joe's level you often just say yes or no to what the staff brings so maybe you can say Joe played no role in the discussions - aside from authorizing them and approving their result. Authorizing discussions, and approving the results and getting paid for authorizing and approving, however, seems like involvement to most of us. Involvement of the highest levels at the highest levels. Moreover, apparently even Hunted played no role in the discussion - he was needed for "branding" but not for "developing." But Joe and Hunter knew what was going on because of the money flowing into their bank accounts. Hundreds of thousands and then millions went into Biden bank accounts - this is what narrowing the discussions to "maybe some one e-mail on the laptop is false" overlooks. If hundreds of thousands of dollars comes into your bank account, you know it happened and you know why it is coming. What's Joe got to say about all the money which Hunter got? and which Hunter gave to him?

After the “Truth and Reconciliation Commissions” that Biden supporters are envisioning, “American dissidents” is going to become a thing.

No, after those start, Civil War and mass mureder are going to become a thing.

There's 500 million small arms, and at least half a trillion rounds of ammunition, in private hands in the US.

Any attempt to disarm us will start a Civil War. Any attempt to start destroying lives with "Truth and Reconciliation Commissions" will get the people on those Commissions killed. Any attempt to punish the killers will spiral.

The Democrats have spent since June engaging in political violence to advance their political agenda. if they're successful with that tactic, we will turn it back on them, and turn the dial up to 11.

Take a look at the "judicial wars". The Democrats would destroy a rule in their way (Bork, Estrada, etc) then scream and whine when the GOP did the same thing back to them, many times more.

"But we didn't do it that much!"

"Tough shit. The rule was never', as in 'never murder people to advance your political agenda, or never filibuster a candidate you have no legitimate grounds to stop'. That rule is gone. Now it's 'go ahead and kill anyone who gets in your way, or threatens you', or 'filibuster anyone you don't like."

I don't want the US to have that new rule, which is why I'm supporting Trump. I hope you all won't want it, either

To be fair, nitwits like Robert Reich who postulated this, was saying the same things in 2008 when Obama was on the verge of winning and many followers wanted to prosecute Bush officials for "war crimes". It's who these leftists really are when they forget themselves.

Luckily they are all a bunch of pussies that expect the government apparatus to do the dirty work for them and are stunned at the news of local sheriffs and LOE's routinely declining to carry out unconstitutional orders. It's a bunch of idle bluster from progressive keyboard warriors.
