"As Joe Rogan’s Platform Grows, So Does the Media and Liberal Backlash. Why? The popular podcast host is a political liberal by all metrics. So what explains the contempt he provokes in liberal circles?"

Glenn Greenwald asks (at The Intercept).
The objections typically raised to Rogan concern his questioning of some of the very recent changes brought about by trans visibility and equality.... If the standard is that anyone who even entertains debates over the maxmialist [sic] and most controversial questions in this very new and evolving social movement is to be cast out as radioactive, liberalism and the Democratic Party will be a very small group.... The other critique centers on Rogan’s willingness to invite on his show various pundits with far-right views....
While Rogan is politically liberal, he is — argues former Obama 2008 campaign strategist and Rogan listener Shant Mesrobian — culturally conservative, by which he does not mean that Rogan holds conservative views on social issues (again, he is pro-choice and pro-LGBT rights). He means that Rogan exudes culturally conservative signals: he likes MMA fighting, makes crude jokes, hunts, and just generally fails to speak in the lingo of the professional managerial class and coastal elites. And it is those cultural standards, rather than political ones, that make Rogan anathema to elite liberal culture because, Mesrobian argued in a viral Twitter thread, liberals care far more about proper culture signalling than they do about the much harder and more consequential work of actual politics....

Liberals live in a fantasy world - a fog of delusion.

Rogan is a UFC sportscaster. He observes real men fighting. There's no affirmative action, there's no biased refs, there's no #metooism, there's no politics - just two badasses in the ring. (A few badass women too). Toughest guy wins. No consolation prize.

If you take this approach to politics, well, you're not gonna succumb to the fog of delusion. No woman is gonna "self-identify" as a man to fight, Jon Jones. Not.gonna.happen.

You see what happens, you report it. Not that hard.

Liberals get upset when their fog of delusion gets punctured, so they're not gonna like Rogan too much.

One of the big deals with Rogan's Spotify deal was supposed to be that he would be uncensored.

But yesterday I read something about some Spotify employees wanted to have approval of guests and interview questions beforehand.

I hope Rogan tells them to go piss up a rope. I suspect he will.

Rogan has been accused of letting Spotify pull some of his shows from the archive. The podfather worked with Joe in moving the show to Austin and was the first guest in the new studio.

He discussed, in his own podcast, the issue. Joe apparently has some other deals working and withheld those particular podcasts from Spotify for the other deals.

One of the things the podfather and his sidekick JCD emphasize continually is that IF they took any advertising or IF they took any money from anyone for sponsorship, they would quickly find certain things they could not discuss.

That is why they rely on voluntary donations from producers (as they call their listeners). They apparently each take about $100 large out of the show annually.

Joe used to be able to do that. It will be interesting to see how much censorship/control spotify exerts over him.

I know some people here in Brooklyn who keep their weight-lifting regimen secret, but are public about their cycling/running/cardio workouts, because lifting weights makes progressives really uncomfortable. Trying to be strong is wrong. No shit, for real, not exaggerating--they don't want people to know they lift (it's ok for women to lift, though). It's a class thing, an aesthetic and behavioral standard where you're meant to avoid displays of masculinity, inherently toxic, and be unassuming physically. This phenomenon probably relates to why Howard Stern's show has gotten so terrible, although I think he just wants out, and alienating his audience is one way to make that happen.

You could have stopped after the first 3 words.

This goes back to the Obama "Stimulus" law, that didn't have any "shovel ready jobs" in it because the feminists didn't want to see "their" government helping men.

In 2016, men started finally getting the hint. It will be interesting to see how many more men get the hint in 2020

@Althouse, you could have ended your sentence after the third word, and for many additional reasons besides the one you gave.

Footnote: The Democrats think they are only giving up the manly men sector, but they are also giving up the “women who like their men to be manly sector,” possibly including a law Professor Emerita married to a manly man.

Greg The Class Traitor said...

The problem the "men-hating feminists" face is that they can't get to a majority.

If you're a woman who wants to get married, and have a husband that financially supports the family while you run it, you're opposed to the men-hating feminists.

If you're a man? Well, maybe if you think you can find a sugar momma who will take care of you.

But there's a lot more of the first group, than the second. So even though there's more women voters than men voters, "hating men" is still a losing proposition

he does not mean that Rogan holds conservative views on social issues: pro-choice, pro-transgender spectrum

Conservatism is moderating. American Conservatism is defined by well-established principles in The Declaration and The Constitution.

The Pro-Choice, selective, opportunistic quasi-religion ("ethics"), is constructed on a foundation of diversity (i.e. denial of individual dignity, denial of individual conscience, normalization of color blocs, color quotas, and affirmative discrimination), conflation of logical domains, and exclusion (e.g. Planned Parenthood/cannibalized-child, selective-child/wicked solution).

The pro-transgender spectrum sects are known for their adoption of political congruence ("="), a sociopolitical construct of selective exclusion, and a Rainbow symbology that takes gay pride in exclusion of black, brown, and the shredded remains of white.

Liberalism is divergent. Progressivism is monotonic. #PrinciplesMatter

There's another & uglier explanation -- much of the modern Left is knee-jerk Stalinist. They have absolutely no use for free speech, and consider anyone who "platforms" right wing views (and they don't have to be "far-right") as enemies of the Revolution.

The same is the case for the members of the so-called "Intellectual Dark Web". To hear the Left talk about it, you'd think it was a cabal of the KKK & Aryan Nation & the American Nazi Party, when in truth, NONE of them voted for Trump in 2016, including the one Republican of the bunch. In fact, the largest fraction of the IDW members are BernieBros. Then why do they give the Left such heartburn? Because they actually believe in free speech.

Crude isn't included. The left is far more crude.

The Conservatives didn't take masculinity - it was once universal. Democrats abandoned it, just as they have legality, fairness, history, bipartisanship, traditional liberalism, and truth. That left all of us who are not nuts on the outside in the audience watching the circus and animal acts. Millions of people who call themselves Democrats or liberal only share one thing with the new left: Trump hatred. That forces them to vote for circus animal power, even if they see the circus for what it is. TDS is a powerful and dangerous affliction - harder to quit than heroin.

I wonder what percentage of Trump voters are traditional liberals on most things. I bet a majority are. I've met lots of Trump voters lately, and very few have a problem with gays, minorities, or civil rights as they were understood just a few years ago. Those who do are mostly Trumpers too, but they have nowhere else to go either.

Doesn't toe the line, occasionally challenges The Narrative, therefore doesn't serve the cause of prog power.

"The popular podcast host is a political liberal by all metrics."

Doesn't matter.

"So what explains the contempt he provokes in liberal circles?"

Contempt is a tool, especially useful to keep "liberals" in line.

"If the standard is that anyone who even entertains debates over the maxmialist [sic] and most controversial questions in this very new and evolving social movement is to be cast out as radioactive, liberalism and the Democratic Party will be a very small group"

Size is beside the point. Power is the point: progs are trying to leverage their institutional hegemony, e.g. in the media, to expand it.

"liberals care far more about proper culture signalling than they do about the much harder and more consequential work of actual politics...."

We're not talking about "liberals" here. Progs care about proper culture signaling because it affirms and solidifies dominance. Deviance must squashed. They are right to think of enforced cultural conformity as politically consequential.

AA: "Democrats are crazy to let conservatism take possession of the crude, manly sector!"

No. The manly sector is part of the patriarchy and must be destroyed. It stands in the way of pure prog power and must be destroyed. Manly men are on the decline anyway, and Dems calculate that they can attract enough unmanly men along with the nice women of America a to prevail. They may calculate wrong, but they are not crazy.

Agree. And it's going to get worse. Because the core divide is culturally/educational rather than by wealth or historic political affiliations. A good chunk of those now graduating from US universities have been indoctrinated with a naĂŻve SJW worldview.

This hit home for me when a cousin recently asked for some job tips for her son who had just graduated from college. I had only meet him once, when he was in HS. Found him then to be a good natured, sensible kid on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. I checked his FB feed and saw, near the top, one post asking his black friends to help him better understand his white privilege. Another post instructed any of his FB friends who were Trump supporters to defriend him to save him the effort of defriended them. I dislike Trump, but I find this even more distasteful.

I just don't understand why US parents shell out big bucks for a college education today.

Trump has once again exposed the audiences to the reality of one on one battle that has one trophy winner. As crude as that sounds it is the only honor that can actually be won in American life. Ergo: a competent and loyal battle leader is the sine qua non.

Too late. We've already got a monopoly on the crude manly sector.

The reality is that Joe Rogan is probably more like the bulk of Americans than anybody presently decrying him. I know that doesn't make him palatable for the Left who, if nothing else, has actual mandates to enforce a singular way of speech and thought, but it does make him immensely popular across the country.

Which is why his move to Texas is a natural progression.

Rick said...

He's missing a big part of the answer. Because left wingers control traditional media they oppose all alternatives including Rogan to maintain their monopoly. We saw this at the opening of the blog era with first libertarians and the conservatives embracing blogs. Liberals spent most of the first decade of blogs deriding them as unemployed, in their mothers' basement, and in their pajamas. Their goal was to ensure blogging remained insular and without influence thus preserving their monopoly.

When liberals realized this wasn't working they joined, but their ethos was different. Rather than dialogue their effort was to shout others down and increase the noise to information ratio pushing people to abandon the format and return to the left-controlled formats. They're doing the same to Rogan, cherry-picking his worst positions, misrepresenting what they mean and implying anyone listening to him is probably a racist.

There's only one page in the left's playbook.

Leland said...

I don't know if Democrats are crazy to let that happen, but Republicans are smart to distance themselves from that stigma. The Republican preference for the traditional family is important, but it shouldn't be managed by government beyond getting government out of the way.

I agree with this: "Democrats didn't "let" conservatives take possession, Democrats thrust it upon them." They thought it would be a wedge to Republicans to characterize Trump as crude and manly. Instead, it made Trump more relatable to the masses. It is one strength that Biden used to have and was sufficient to gain Biden the candidacy. But Democrats can't help themselves right now when it comes to wanting to frame things in black/white distinctions. They were popular when they were the party of the grey zone.

TheOne Who Is Not Obeyed said...

So crude manliness is now "culturally conservative"? As opposed to the behaviors of those who are "socially conservative" or"politically conservative"? Seems the media is now making up yet more new, fallacious categories to fit their preferred, elitist worldview. Sorta like "white Hispanic".

We had them as clients for their casino business, which moved to including the UFC as they grew. There was significant overlap between our IP and Entertainment practice groups. But then our UFC attorneys apparently realized that they could do better on their own, and left. But they didn’t have a patent attorney so I kept representing the UFC. Never got to see a live match (according to one of our female attys who did, it is a lot more intense, esp close up), but did meet the owners and top management a couple times. Rogan is attacked from the Left precisely because he engages in the battle of ideas. The Left has invested an awful lot of time and energy in attempting to destroy the battlefield of ideas with identity politics and cancel culture. The reason why is because they are unable to engage in any such battles and win. This is not necessarily because of the worth of their ideas, but rather because they are unable or unwilling to examine their ideas critically, and thus unable to defend them.

But researchers have also revealed a paradox: Women prefer men who behave in ways that could be described as benevolently sexist over those who don’t.

Democrats are bullies, but typically they are bullies in girlie ways. They bully you by going behind your back and talking shit about you, while they are friendly to your face. They are passive-aggressive bullies. Democrats accuse you of sex harassment if you look at them funny, and they call you rapist if you try to give them a hug. Democrats say Biden is a rapist, but they're going to vote for him anyway. And you have to vote for him also, or else.

If you are eating dinner, Democrats will scream at you until you give them a black power salute. And you say, "But I'm a white guy." And they scream at you louder. And then you say, "And you're white, too." Then they pull out their cell phone and take a selfie of all their screaming. And they post it on-line because they think people will like them for their commitment.

2020 is so messed up because Democrats are starting fires and riots, which is not a girly thing to do. This is because the girls of the Democrat party no longer think a penis or vagina is relevant at all. And they end up arrested or crying or very unhappy about their lack of manliness. And they think people in uniform with guns should disarm everybody else with guns. Also the MMA should be illegal and nobody should eat meat. And if you're a baby, they'll stab you. But they won't eat you, because that would be icky. Also it would not be vegetarianism.

Bay Area Guy said...No woman is gonna "self-identify" as a man to fight, Jon Jones. Not.gonna.happen.

The reverse has in fact occurred though, a birth male with the trans surgery fought women.
Here's what Joe Rogan said about it:

"UFC color commentator and stand-up comedian Joe Rogan opposed Fallon Fox receiving licensing, saying, "First of all, she's not really a she. She's a transgender, post-op person. The operation doesn't shave down your bone density. It doesn't change. You look at a man's hands and you look at a woman's hands and they're built different. They're just thicker, they're stronger, your wrists are thicker, your elbows are thicker, your joints are thicker. Just the mechanical function of punching, a man can do it much harder than a woman can, period."

Here's what one of his opponents said:

"During Fox's fight against Tamikka Brents, Brents suffered a concussion, an orbital bone fracture, and seven staples to the head in the 1st round. After her loss, Brents took to social media to convey her thoughts on the experience of fighting Fox: "I've fought a lot of women and have never felt the strength that I felt in a fight as I did that night. I can't answer whether it's because she was born a man or not because I'm not a doctor. I can only say, I've never felt so overpowered ever in my life and I am an abnormally strong female in my own right," she stated. "Her grip was different, I could usually move around in the clinch against other females but couldn't move at all in Fox's clinch..."

Interesting to note: the Fox-Brents fight was in 2014 when Fox was 38 years old - long into the timeline of physical decline. And yet the physical difference was still this great between a top rank woman and Fox who (if competing against men) could not have won a match against any professional.

Rogan is a hero to me just because he refuses to fold (at least yet)to orthodox liberal views. He did go wobbly last week apologizing for saying fires in California & North West were set by arsonists. Some were, so I am disappointed he folded on that.

I don't really watch Rogan's show beyond the clips Althouse posts. So, I don't know if he invites any of his censor-happy critics on, but if not, he should. Show them some clips of rioters brutalizing people with businesses to protect and ask them how such conduct furthers the cause of "social justice".

I did the Ctrl+F for "tribal" and got nothing. That's the issue that Greenwald is missing. Democrats don't give a flying fuck about public policy. They're about identifying and discussing and conforming to the cultural affects of their tribe. Rogan is a Democrat in public policy, but that means very little to other Democrats. No modern Democrat is non-tribal.

Trump is doing a lot to expose this Democrat tribalist garbage-culture. Biggest recent example is the Abraham accords. This is a breakthrough that answered the prayers of two generations of peace-loving people. Trump is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Democrat and media reaction? It's no big deal, it's all window dressing. And that's the dominant narrative now.

American politics will never completely move away from tribalism; but right now we're choking on it. I wish Tulsi Gabbard wasn't knifed so early in the nominating process. She was a Democrat that distanced herself somewhat from the tribal bullshit. If she ran against Trump I might have voted for her. But this election my only real choice is Trump.

AA - I'm trying to understand why I should care about "Joe Rogan's" political beliefs? I hate this effort by both sides to 'shoehorn' my political beliefs into some 'Tribes' beliefs. My political beliefs have changed over the years, like most people's, only the 'rabid narrative believers' stick to such long time beliefs and refuse to understand life's changes - both on the Left and Right.

They had kind of kicked Greenwald off The Intercept for questioning the premise of the impeachment, maybe, or the FBI and CIA’s right to control politics, but I guess they have let him back on. Maybe because time bore his opinions out.

There is psychosis loose in leftieland. The disconnect from reality is palpable. One of the key indicators is the blind bug-eyed fury at little things. Rogan does not toe the Critical Social Justice theory line where the epistemology of what you know has nothing to do with evidence and close analysis; it has everything to do with what you want to be true. If you say it loudly and angrily enough, it becomes truth that brooks no rebuttal. Rogan doesn't work like that.

Another key indicator is the overheated rhetoric at the extreme. Rogan doesn't indulge in it and he challenges extreme rhetoric.

Lefties, being nasty little shits, cannot abide any departure from their psychosis bubble. Plus, leftie males are cucks and betas.

JK Rowling is somewhat like Joe Rogan in that she is enormously popular and supports all the liberal positions - gay marriage, abortion etc. But the culture is trying to cancel her because of her position or what they suppose to be her position on trans issues. I've been reading Lethal White and Troubled Blood, the last two books in her Cormoran Strike mystery series, trying to see if she has come over to the dark side as the Kancel Kings are saying. She has not. Nor is she on her way over here. I would say that she is setting mysteries in secular English culture as it exists in the 21C. One reason why her mysteries are hard to figure out is the mist of stereotypes, 21C stereotypes, which swirls around and shrouds the true human situation which has given rise to the murder. And I think this statement that mental and moral effort is required is what she is now hated for. And it's why I like her despite it all. She suggests in every book about Strike and Robin Ellacott that in a lefty society, the only one she writes about, the truth is hidden by preconceptions, by careerist thinking, by bureaucracy, by stereotyping, by lazy, sloppy thinking and work. She has hundreds of brutally unsympathetic portraits of leftys at all levels of secularized English society. What she saying on every page is that even in lefty society you still have to make a great effort mental and moral effort to find the truth even about your friends or your parents, let alone to find the truth about a deliberately hidden human motivation which has caused actual murder. And most people aren't doing that. Rowling's Ship of Fools approach is so wide-ranging that I'm sure every rotten-hearted lefty of every type in England or America has found himself, herself or theirself skewered on the pages of this series. Us righties fare no better, in fact worse - there are no good people on the right, but we are used to it. The left isn't used to the idea that they are a mixture, good, bad, comic, sweet, smug, horrible. They can't take it. Cancel Rowling, they cry. [Also, in her last book, she spends a lot of time depicting figures from the Seventies as they are now - old, bald, fat, senile, skinny, cancer-stricken, dying, whatever - and still mouthing Seventies slogans. It's about a much fun as the everlasting rain, mist, drizzle, cloud, chill, gray etc. but it's real as the weather. And it's also not a popular move, I'm sure.]

Dems have decided masculinity is toxic, whether or not it is crude.

Yes, a judgment and label of a whole gender, not the feminine political myth, but masculine. A milestone in rabid diversity. They tried to do this previously in order to calm the cognitive dissonance and justify Planned Parenthood, including Cecile and Mengele clinics, selective-child ("wicked solution") and cannibalized-child ("redistributive and recycled parts"), respectively, for social and medical progress, by painting the masculine gender, the so-called "patriarchy" as misogynistic and advocates of rape... rape-rape culture h/t Whoopi.

I know some people here in Brooklyn who keep their weight-lifting regimen secret, but are public about their cycling/running/cardio workouts, because lifting weights makes progressives really uncomfortable. Trying to be strong is wrong. No shit, for real, not exaggerating--they don't want people to know they lift

Muscles = toxic masculinity

That needed to be on a Seinfeld episode.

I listen to Rogan every week. He'll sell out to his Spotify deal by agreeing to curate his guest list. What he was advocating as his podcasting style isn't feasible in the Spotify world. He'll call on "Great" guests but you won't see a Joey Diaz being called on anymore. Joe will work something else out with him.

If he is serious about being "Joe Rogan" he'll bring back Dr Debra Soh and the other lady who writes on Trans issues. Move that conversation along as it is one that protects children.

He's like me probably. A bernie supporter at one time but now seeing Trump as the only long term path to individual freedom in this country.

How come he doesn't get Althouse on one of his episodes?

So, according to Greenwald, liberals dislike Rogan for the same reason NeverTrumpers dislike Trump. Both Rogan and Trump are NOKD (Not our kind, Dear). It's a matter of class. In the eyes of their 'betters', neither Rogan nor Trump have class. That cannot be tolerated.

In addition to Rogan, Greenwald is pretty damn good for a liberal.

He thinks the Russian Collusion hoax was a hoax. He hates the FISA Court, the Deep State, likes Trump's peace initiatives and he's been de facto banned from Rachel Maddow's show.

True, he probably loves Bernie, but, Hey, at least he has a brain and thinks. Not a lot of that on the Left.

The emasculation of the Dem party explains why their favorite tactic is to attack viciously and then cry victim when they're called to account. Antifa scum have been doing that since the riots started.

Also his recent interview with Ben Shapiro was really awkward but great. Rogan forced Shapiro to come clean on some stuff and I thought it was one of the more interesting welfare debates I had ever seen.

Shapiro speaks in talking points. A lot of that was Rogan forcing him to explain what he was saying and it made Shapiro look bad because he couldn't back up what he was saying.

That's Rogan's genius as an interviewer; he isn't a political or news junkie and doesn't really follow Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. He has to have things explained to him and you get a lot more unvarnished opinion out of his guests than if they were on one of the network shows being interviewed by a talking head.
