"Hillary Clinton will deliver a prime-time speech next Wednesday for the Democratic National Convention..."

"Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts will join Mrs. Clinton, the 2016 nominee, on the Wednesday night program if she is not selected as Mr. Biden’s running mate, according to the officials. Former President Bill Clinton will speak as well, one of the officials said. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and former Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, a Republican who is a harsh critic of President Trump, will deliver addresses Monday night, the officials said. Former President Barack Obama’s time slot has not been announced (or leaked), but he could be included on a crammed Wednesday night program, or possibly introduce Mr. Biden on Thursday — to deliver a nationally televised rendition of the-Joe-I-know speech he has been giving during online Biden fund-raisers and round tables. It is not clear when Michelle Obama, who delivered what was widely regarded as the best speech at the 2012 convention in Charlotte, N.C., will speak. But planners have privately said they believe her address could attract the widest viewership outside of Mr. Biden’s."

From "2020 Election Live Updates: Democratic Convention to Feature Obamas and Clintons" (NYT).

Other than the Obamas, this sounds awful. I can't believe we're going to be stuck watching both of the Clintons. It's all so terribly old. Who wants to hear from Kasich?! And Warren and Sanders are the opposite of Biden. They're the candidates who got elbowed out by the party that didn't want them. But I guess they'll be good and play their part and concentrate on how it's all about getting rid of Trump.

I've been under the impression that the Clintons generally are no longer particularly that well liked among the Dem electorate. Do Democrat voters really want to hear more from Bill and Hill? Even if the typical Dem voter chooses to disbelieve all the Epstein stuff and email server stuff and Benghazi stuff and all the mountains of bagage built up over the years I still think it's just a little weird to go back to that particular well at this point.

Or is this just a reflection of the fact that the party can't find enough people of significant stature to speak? Are the Clintons the bottom of the barrel?

That will be awful. I hope Kasich stays there with his new friends, although I’m now very grateful that when he was a Republican he wrote the Emergency Tax Act in 1997 (signed into law by Bill Clinton) that gives Trump the authority to withhold tax collection for up to a year. It is a genius move to pit Nancypants Biden et al against people getting monetary relief. “Re-elect or let Joe collect” is a great slogan.

It is interesting that in reporting to the public the line up of speakers that this NYT mediaist (new word, in this age - they are all opinion providers now) would make the additional commentary about how fantastic Ms Obama spoke at an event in 2012. This, when unlike the others cited, it is not even known if she is speaking. So why not comment about some other Dems (Gabbard? Williamson?) who is equally unknown to have a speaker slot?? Why don’t they get a reference?

I believe it is only when enough people say “Enough!!” - be they left right center up down whatever colour gender religion etc - that maybe we will get to a world where THE JOB of a reporter is not to dispense with what THEY THINK but to tell us what IS and leave it at that please.

Tell me the timing for speakers, sure. Like a baseball lineup card. That is information.
But I don’t need you to try to corral my thoughts via your own sidebars. That is spin and who isn’t sick of it. You can’t even get a straight report about who is scheduled for an event without all the sidebars and tangents and bullshit that is somebody’s opinion.

What exactly does this hairsniffing husk of a hoary joke have to do or fail to do to draw mainstream press criticism? Kill somebody? Are they just going to pretend Joe is normal all the way to 11/4? And hey, if some publisher wants to give Obama a $65 million bribe, I mean book advance, that's a cheap exit prize

I'd just like to see a tax law change take effect:

If you've held any Federal State or local government job / office any time in the last 20 year, or if your soups or other immediate family member has done so, then no publisher may write off any part of any book advance given to you, until such time as that advance actually "pays out".

Because bribes and payoffs shouldn't be tax deductible

These entertainers at the DNC are on par with the entertainers at the Republican shindig. Call it a draw. A miserable draw...

That is an excellent idea. Are there any big-city mayors speaking? These are the people most directly affecting the lives of their constituents right now. They're on the front lines. Let's hear from them!

I think the last major party convention that was a problem for the nominee was 1992, when Buchanan hijacked the Republican Convention with a speech that, as one wag put it, "probably sounded better in the original German." Before that, the Democratic Convention in 1968 didn't go so well, but not so much for anything said in the speeches.

I read elsewhere that Latinos are cheesed/quesoed off that none of them are being invited to speak in prime time. What, the Dems have time for Benedict Kasich but no time for any of the diverse Hispanic members of their party? No bueno!

Unless the new Democrat mantra is "Don't bait us!" Lori Lightfoot would be a waste of time.

Trump says the Spanish Flu in 1917 "probably" ended the Second World War.

sunsong: "Trump says the Spanish Flu in 1917 "probably" ended the Second World War"

Many historians have long written about the impact of the Spanish Flu on the ability/willingness of nations to continue pressing forward with the War.

Some have even suggested that yes, the Spanish Flu, which killed more people globally than died in WW1, helped bring the war to an end as nations became "exhausted" in terms of manpower and resources.

So here's another example where Trump says something completely non-controversial and the idiots try and go the other way.

Its another Japanese goldfish feeding "controversy"....again.

The pandemic of 1917 was actually 1918 (and 1919), as has been pointed out every time he identifies it as the 1917 pandemic. No doubt the armies and the supporting civilian populations were affected, in a conflict that ended that Fall. But the great German Spring offensive failed by summer, and that determined the outcome of the War. More of Trump just saying stuff.

doctrev said...

The Dems hoping that the election would be a referendum on Trump was also their play in 2016. The vast majority of their ads were tearing down Trump- why not, given how quickly they were running away from Hillary Clinton's policies of free trade and failure.

Now they're going back to it? When the twins of China Flu and black riots perfectly intersect with Trump's core identity? Are the Democrats REALLY this retarded, or is it down to them not planning to honor the inevitable Trump victory at all?

Either way, food is cheap. Stock up while you can.

The moron, you, who argued that Stalin invaded Poland from the East ONLY because Hitler invaded Poland from the West in 1939 is in no position to declare others are just "saying stuff".

Even worse regarding your Hitler/Stalin/Poland "hot take", is that Hitler invaded Poland 1 week after signing the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact which gave the green light for Stalin to invade Poland from the East in coordination with Hitler invading from the West.

But then again, you are big supporter of Biden, so, you know, that explains volumes.

Fat!

There is a fair argument that the pandemic, not the failure of the German offensive, actually won the war for the allies.

But not with an idiot that thinks sunsong knows anything. Debates are with people who know something.

Drago said...

Of course, by far the best example of just "saying stuff" has to be the latest lefty/dem/LLR-lefty "hot take" that Trump considering an acceptance speech at Gettysburg represents an homage to......(wait for it)......(wait for it).....(wait for it)........The Confederacy!!

LOL

Yes indeed, our readering-like lefty/LLR-lefty "journalists" are jumping up and down and claiming that Gettsburg is the perfect "dog whistle" for white supremacy and the Confederacy!!

You know, I think I'm beginning to understand why the left/dems were so willing to begin attacking/defacing statues/memorials to Abraham Lincoln.

The democrats have never forgiven nor will ever forgive Abraham Lincoln and the Union Army for defeating their comrades in arms.

This just in: After receiving word that Hillary Clinton might be dropping out of the speakers' line-up, Democrats (including Elizabeth Warren, in full Amerindian head-dress) and LLR John Kasich, danced widddershins around a pentangle and chanted, "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn." Shortly thereafter Mrs. Clinton announced that she would indeed be addressing the convcention.

I'd be pretty pissed off too.

To be fair, for the last couple of decades, Black people have been taking the backseat to brown people in Democrat politics.

Lol.

Rapist? Well, we're going to have a civil trial in New York on that.

Failed candidate? We'll know on November 4.

"Most racist president"? Mmm okay. I'm on that.

"Depressed wife"? I don't know; perhaps Melania isn't so depressed when she's living in Maryland with her parents, Barron and her boyfriend. She did get that newly revised "pre-" nuptial agreement after all.

Anyway, Althouse; I think the Kasich speech is going to be thrilling and stimulating. But more than anything, I am wondering who it is that you'd like to see speak at a political convention. Scott Adams? Mike Cernovich? Glenn Beck? Joe Rogan? Rush Limbaugh? All those guys are clogging the internet and the airwaves every day and aren't saying anything that has much importance about anything. They couldn't possibly say anything new that they haven't said a thousand times already.

Fair enough. Military historians write about what they know best. They probably don't write that typhus destroyed Napoleon's army in 1812, either. But it did.
