Over in Portland a bunch a bunch of rioters surrounded a white SUV. The driver pulled a gun and fired off some rounds into the air, which seems to have clarified the situation for the rioters. What’s strange is that the person making the cellphone video claimed to have seen the driver sharing some brews with the rioters — beforehand, I assume.

Reminds me of a story told by I guy I used to shoot with. Deceased now. In 1968 he was down in the District of Columbia for a meeting. When he came out the city was burning and rioters were roaming the city looking for white guys to beat up in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. He told me he had a little Beretta .25 acp in his car — absolutely illegal in DC! — so when three black youths approached him as he was getting into his car he pulled it from his glove box, pointed it at the bridge of the nose of one of them, and said “Please don’t make me use this.” They didn’t. They left.

Recently Kristy Noem, Governor of South Dakota, said that when the schools in her state went to distance learning they lost 30% of their students. By "lost" she meant that they never attended online classes and never turned in assignments. I wonder if the statistics in Madison were similar. Or was it 60% lost, there? I'd like to know whether students in Wisconsin in K-12 attended once the schools went to distance learning. If not, what are we paying teachers full salary for? And were the non-attenders promoted? And how can the two groups - attenders and non-attenders - be in one classroom ever again? And isn't it important to the re-opening debate to know how many students become drop-outs when the physical schools close?

Today is the 100th anniversary of the death of the Empress Eugénie, née María Eugenia Ignacia Agustina de Palafox y Kirkpatrick, 19th countess of Teba etc etc, spouse of Napoléon III. Someone else can praise the Napoléons but Eugénie was a good, faithful, and forward-looking woman. Requiescat in pace.

Wildswan, some teachers are protesting the reopening of schools. Quelle surprise! As you observe, they are being paid full salary without having to actually deal with their students. The whole lot of them should be thrown out and the public education system [if we must have one] rebuilt from scratch. I'd much rather see vouchers and private & parochial education. The results couldn't possibly be any worse.

Just to get the party started:

However, a probable case [of Covid] can also be determined without an FDA-approved test if someone meets definitions of certain clinical criteria and epidemiological links, Souri said.

[snip]

Clinical criteria needed to meet the definition of a probable COVID-19 includes:

at least two of the following symptoms: fever that is measured or subjective, chills, rigors, myalgia, headache, sore throat, or new smell and taste disorders;

at least one of the following symptoms: cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; or

severe respiratory illness with at least one of the following: clinical or radiographic evidence of pneumonia, or acute respiratory distress syndrome and no alternative more likely diagnosis.

Epidemiological links needed to meet the definition of a probable case includes:

close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19;

close contact with a person with clinically compatible illness and linkage to a confirmed case of COVID-19; or

travel to or residence in an area with sustained, ongoing community transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Close contact, Souri said, is defined by being within 6 feet for at least a period of 10 minutes to 30 minutes or more depending on exposure.

“There are 15 different options on how you can be classified as a probable case,” she said.

https://communityimpact.com/dallas-fort-worth/frisco/coronavirus/2020/05/19/new-covid-19-definitions-by-the-state-could-raise-case-counts-in-collin-county/

Also from the article:

“That still gets counted towards the case count,” she said. “It’s different. It’s not confirmed; it’s probable; but it’s still a case.”

These are the national CDC definitions.

I don't don't understand why 90% of the US does not have Kung Flu under these diagnoses.

It's kind of like AIDS in Africa back in the 90s. Remember? Everyone had AIDS, it spread heterosexually and was going to break out worldwide any moment now.

It made a great story to get money but the problem was the diagnoses. WHO said that anyone having a couple of symptoms that were common to a 1000 diseases in Africa was to be diagnosed with AIDS. Symptoms included, IIRC, nausea, lack of appetite, diarhea, fever. In other words, what most Africans have normally.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangui_definition

Also, if you had these symptoms and died, got run over by a car for example, it was counted as an AIDS death.

We are being fucked by the data.

Eugénie was a good, faithful, and forward-looking woman. Requiescat in pace.

Not exactly faithful. She had two children with Nieppberg and never saw Napoleon after Waterloo.

Adam Albert von Neipperg was an Austrian Ainobleman, soldier and diplomat who seduced Napoleon’s second wife, Marie Louise, while Napoleon was in exile on Elba. Charged with this task by Marie Louise’s father, Emperor Francis I of Austria, Neipperg discouraged Marie Louise from joining her husband and eventually erased any feelings of loyalty Marie Louise had towards Napoleon. Count von Neipperg had three children with Marie Louise. He then quietly married her after Napoleon’s death. Together they proved to be relatively popular governors of the Duchy of Parma.

Maybe it was three children.

Which one?

I've watched the British version 3-4 times. Ep 4 dragged a bit but the first 3 were superb.

I watched a few episodes of the American version, first season. It didn't really do anything for me. Just seemed like regular US television, churned out by the yard. Stale acting and stale storylines.

I have been intrigued by this concept expressed here that men gave their lives for our country to defend the principle that nobody owes anybody anything and that everybody is completely on their own. It’s kind of ironic if you think about it. That they made such a huge sacrifice for us to make sure that nobody would ever be asked to make the smallest sacrifice in defense of their fellow Americans in the face of a common peril. But it’s true! Nobody should have to wear a mask if the mask creates the slightest degree of discomfort. Arlington is full of soldiers who fought for that principle, many maimed for life in horrible ways, many living with the psychological consequences of war the rest of us can’t imagine. All for us, all so we can tell each other to fuck off, you’re on your own.

I really like the design. I would have been 5-7 years old when it was purchased by the owner, a Naval officer. He kept it very neat and clean and I bet it wasn’t used very much, as it shows very little use wear. $15 and works great right out of the case which is also barely worn.

I think that the place where you went astray there is with your assumption that “nobody” owes anybody anything, etc. that isn’t what is going on at all. Rather, what they fought for was that the government was significantly circumscribed in what it could demand or require. There has always been a significant amount of community stricture, but at a low enough level, that you can easily vote with your feet, if you don’t like the local strictures.

I can see though why the left has a problem with the concept of limited government. The whole purpose of socialism whether it be Marxist fascist, etc, is creating what is supposed to be a better society through government action. Thus controlling government, by any mans possible, is critical to their success. And a little deception or misdirection about who and what we are, and were, is valid, for getting where they want to go.

Josephbleau said...

Yes that is how America works. Soldiers give their lives to maintain our freedom, then jerks use their freedom to burn the flag. These guys get a hardon burning flags. Heinlien discussed in fiction a system where you had to serve to get to vote, it sounds attractive but now everyone votes, even those who hate the people who give them freedom. Some people want more criminals to vote. Things are changing, the aclu does not support free speech for nazis. Hate crimes take freedom of speech away, for better or worse. If government is powerful enough to make you wear a mask, it is powerful enough to make you do anything.

The fact is that government is so entrenched they don’t care how you vote, the elite will be in charge never the less.

We have centuries of data on the failures of central planning and we have Adam Smith and David Ricardo to teach us how individuals do better. Free markets are always better. This is very hard for those who would rule others to accept. They are certain they could do better, especially if, like the Biden family, the graft is good.

Jon Henry,
As states clarify whether they co-mingle probable with confirmed, better data at that level? Maybe..maybe not.
For instance:
State Officials Say Texas Coronavirus Counts Exclude ‘Probable’ Cases
“I have verified with my health director in writing that this is the case,” Hale told Texas Scorecard the following week. “No antibody tests, no presumed cases. Only positive swab tests.”

The bottom line: Texas is counting “probable” coronavirus cases but is not including those counts in the total number of “confirmed” cases reported to the public—with at least one possible exception.

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, which tracks and reports COVID-19 cases for Bexar County, states on its website that their case totals “include both confirmed and probable cases” and that those combined case totals match numbers reported on the DSHS COVID-19 dashboard. Texas Scorecard has reached out to Metro Health and DSHS for clarification. "
