Things that feel more substantively meaningful than they are...

Things people are saying on Twitter, which I'm not bothering to do links for: "Even GOD is speaking out against Trump"/"If only the lighting hit Trump while he was photo oping in front of a Church with bible in his hand"/"Dear God, aim more north. White building, surrounded by fences. 38° 53' 52.6452'' N and 77° 2' 11.6160'' W."

It's not all anti-Trump. Even as lightning makes many/most people think it's God!, the thought that God is speaking out is closely followed — like thunder after lightning — with the interpretation He is expressing an opinion similar to my own.

Thus, there's also this: "It’s God’s way of saying ‘go home’ to these anarchists, and saying 'this is mine!'"

By the way, to give God directions — replete with longitude and latitude — is to say outright that you don't think He is omniscient. Might want to fine-tune your prayers. And as you note, He is already angry. He is wrathful. Don't tell Him what to do.

The last 4 months in general have left me void of belief in human nature. Or rather, have confirmed and continue to confirm my worst beliefs.

God, please send me something good to restore good faith in your creation.

Similar to blog commenters telling Althouse what to do.

“Ezekiel 25:17. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

Or maybe the Washington Monument just naturally attracts lightning, being the tallest structure in the area.

God set the world, the "universe", and Gaia in motion, and gave people freewill, causative capacity, and a conscience to follow his religious/moral prescriptions, which the mortal gods and goddesses and their servants consider to be an imposition and infraction of their rule and rules (e.g. "ethics") and liberal appetites. Don't harsh my mellow, Dude!

What the media missed: Bill Barr on top of the monument holding a sword up to the sky.

Washington Monument Lightning Rod
Washington, D.C.
The monument's pointy aluminum tip has been melted down by repeated lightning strikes.

A religion post from Althouse with which religious folks are unlikely to disagree strongly?
Wow, the Lord really does work in mysterious ways.

God loves or hates tall buildings.

Lightning used to be considered a terrible swift sword of God's wrath. It started fires. Now that we have lightning rods on buildings I wouldn't want to look at it as a sign of God's impotence.

We sit outside and argue all night long
About a god we've never seen

I wonder how many of those beseeching God to smite Trump are normally atheists?

What can't Trump do? Now he's converting atheist to God.

Electricity finding the path of least resistance to ground (the tallest grounded structure for miles) seems like a counter-intuitive proof for God, let alone God's intent.

God, thinking about directions to the White House.

"I know the exact position and vector of every particle in the universe, but even I am dismayed by how ridiculous these mortals can be. Yeah, thanks mortal! Couldn't have found it without you. Schmuck"!

The Washington Monument gets struck every single time a thunderstorm rolls over the Mall because it is by far the tallest point around. It happens whether the President is a Democrat or a Republican. Liberals are stupid

Human beings are meaning seeking machines. It is what we do whether there is any there or not. It's like cats having a hunting instinct that is distinct from their need-to-eat instinct.

There's two schools of thought on lightning rods. The US version sticks a grounded rod up there and hopes lightning hits it instead of what it's supposed protect.

Europe sharpens the tips of the rod to make electricty leak off so that no strike happens at all. Many deaths from residents falling off roofs sharpening the rods.

You can do the European version (maybe have to wait for winter to do this): scuff across the carpet holding a pin and touch the sharp end to a doorknob. You'll hear a hiss but no spark. Do it with a coin and you'll get a spark.
