Theodore Roosevelt's statue will be removed from the Museum of Natural History in New York City. The memorial has long prompted objections as a symbol of colonialism.

Where are my manners? Happy Fathers Day--my son is back at his old job (and much happier) so that's gift enough for me, but he bought me a big bag of mushrooms at the Midtown farmer's market yesterday and I ate most of them for dinner tonight. Mmmmm . . . mushrooms.

He's become a gourmand, a cook, and herb gardener, and knew the names of most of the six varieties, but I only eat them.

Those Trump and Biden vids are depressing--both of those guys are older than me!

"Milkweed" is a wonderful flower which has a constellation almost named after it - in summer the bright stars above Antares (that big red star that is always in the southern skies in summer from the United States) are considered by us humans, so far away from the stars themselves, to be part of a constellation whose Latin name is very very close to the real word that people who lived long long ago and spoke what we now called Latin called milkweed.

Trust me. I could talk about the Greek words, too, but that would be showing off. It would be interesting to some people, though, but those people don't need me to tell them about Greek philology, they already know, or at least want to know, which is almost as good, and maybe better.

The TR statue outside NHM in NYC is, let's face it, weird. Commissioned in 1925, it has been attacked for years and almost removed before. Why? Because it depicts TR on a horse with a Native American and African man, both primitively dressed, following on foot. The sculptor called them 3 heroic figures, but it can easily be given a different meaning.

Lysenkoism is alive and well at Michigan State University.

"Today for #ShutDownAcademia #ShutDownSTEM, the GEU and its coalition partners in the STEM community are calling for the removal of Stephen Hsu as VP of Research and Graduate Studies at @michiganstateu."

"We are faculty, students, support staff, and allies within and outside Michigan State University demanding that Stephen Hsu be removed from his position as Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation.
...
By signing this open letter we ask MSU to follow through to its commitment to be a diverse and inclusive institution and to change its institutional and administrative practices so that the passion and talent of Black scholars, Indigenous scholars, and other scholars of color (BIPOC) can be recognized and fostered within these university halls."

"We currently have 820 signatures."

"See another internal letter started by MSU faculty, currently signed by 546 faculty, staff, and graduate students at MSU, here."

This is truly disgusting.

Howard had unknown allies, except for the CCP which owns Tik Tok.

Jeannie and I had reserved tickets to attend the rally. Although somewhat chaotic with people driving by yelling obscenities at us as we walked, a mean mug or two and a fight or two breaking out around us, everything wasn’t actually that bad. However, finding a gate entrance was quite the task…nothing was clarified – and NO..no protesters were blocking entrances.

We finally found how to get in. At the exact moment we approached the first barrier (police tape) there were police lined up at the tape and at the opening we were greeted by the Secret service or contract military (not sure who they were) at 6:05 p.m. who told us, along with a multitude of others at our gate (there was three separate entrance gates at various locations) that we could not enter.

We asked why? They said that the BOK had reached its capacity and the temperature checkers had left prematurely and acted pretty smug about it which I thought was strange. Some who waited with us said they had friends on the inside who text and told them that there were still many empty seats available. So, we waited at the police tape entrance dumb founded for 20 minutes until the police line started backing up and went through a 10 foot fence and chained and locked the gate. No other explanation.

Further, no one was even allowed into the jumbotron area to watch the rally and speeches outside. We walked with a man on our way back to our car, who was on the inside but decided to leave, who also said that there were many more seats available. This is the absolute first hand truth.

So, we drove home to watch what was left of the rally on TV. We saw many empty seats in the background, hearing nothing but lies from reporters stating that the Trump rally didn’t have the turnout that they expected inside and no one even turned out to rally outside to watch the jumbotron (which is exactly what a supporter waiting with us said the media would say). Nothing but lies! We were lied to! They locked a multitude of us out! They even reported that Trump was surprised at the low turnout. If I can get a message to the President, I will tell him how they duped him at this rally and how he is getting played by those who surround him.”

I don't know these people but I believe them.

a lot of people are offended by necrophilia and incest.

The Pietà should be removed.

The sculptor called it a "religious vision of abandonment and a serene face of the Son," thus the representation of the communion between man and God by the sanctification through Christ, but it can easily be given a different meaning.

The statue of Moses, also by Michelangelo, should be removed, since it too could be taken to be offensive. Although the sculptor carved horns as rays of light, that can easily be given a different meaning.

As "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder", so too unwokeness.
Artist's intent has no bearing in the validity/significance of their work.
Today, unerring Arbiters of Wokeness will lead astute, rational groups in
deciding which works shall remain in public view, and, with the prudent,
respectful use of appropriate block-and-tackle, purge toxic influences
from the public psyche.

NYC shootings skyrocket as court closures let pistol perps walk free

'City shootings piled up at a rate of one per hour on Saturday — with more gunplay on Sunday — as an NYPD chief warned that hundreds of gun-possession defendants have been allowed to prowl Gotham thanks to coronavirus-closed courts.

“We have over 1,000 people that have been indicted on a gun-possession charge, where the cases are open, and they are walking around the streets of New York today,” Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael LiPetri told The Post.

That tally doesn’t include about 800 additional defendants who are charged with illegally packing heat but have yet to be formally indicted when the courts ground to a halt, LiPetri said....'

More people were shot in Chicago over the weekend than there were new cases of Covid identified in the state of Maine.

I'm not able to travel to NYC or Chicago on business these days - frequent journeys for me in the past. I'm therefore not paying to stay in a hotel, not ubering around, not dining out. Not alone in staying away I'm thinking the escalation of violence and descent into disorder will continue. I am not complaining about having to do zoom meetings.

NY is about same pop as Sweden...about half that of Florida. State comparisons are probably more useful given our size and regulatory structure.

Well, tim in vermont, you missed my point, which is at least half my fault I suppose. That comment was not intended as statistical analysis, trenchant or otherwise. It was intended to note that new Covid case counts was deemed more newsworthy by many outlets than the spike in violence in cities like Chicago and NY. Also more newsworthy than the high and rising number of deaths from opiods.

It is no longer acceptable for our 13th state to be called "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." When established by Roger Williams, he sought religious freedom and opposed slavery but the combined colony's trade activities principally involved shipping out Newport-distilled rum (an acceptable slave currency) from the state, returning with slaves and gold.

So "Providence Plantations" has to go despite no slave trade activity up north in Providence- according to the judgement of the newly waked generation. But the fact that Rhode island is not an island is inconsequential. There are ten tiny islands in Narragansett Bay on the ocean side of the state but none bear the name Rhode (which means "Red" in Dutch, referring to red clay along the Atlantic shoreline). The Dutch never lived there so Rhode Island and Providence Plantations needs a new name linked to history, such as "Rum" or perhaps named after pirate and rum runner Thomas Tew. Newport Craft Distillery still makes Thomas Tew Rum.

History is unchangeable. Slavery was the state's "number one financial activity" from 1720 to 1807. Between 1709 and 1807, Rhode Island merchants sponsored at least 934 slaving voyages to the coast of Africa and carried an estimated 106,544 slaves to the New World.
