The mail-in ballot scare.

Washington State is a banana republic.

We have had several ridiculous election usurpations since we went to mail in ballots.

King County has a long track record of finding votes.

There is only one reason to switch to mil in balloting. It is to steal elections.

If you offered the average Democrat the power to snap their fingers and eradicate all Republicans from existence, most of them wouldn't even hesitate.

You won't need to offer them the chance to rig mail in ballots. They'll do it regardless.

It's not a scare tactic. It's real. I'm sure the Dems have a number of new and improved way to steal votes with mail-in ballots. They've been pushing it every since this panDEMic started. It's their plan. The Dems have a long and rich tradition of voting fraud.

The head of the Dem party in Nebraska is Jane Kleeb. She's a total global warming nut and anti-pipeline person. She's written a book called, "Harvest the Vote." That's not a joke. Her premise is that rural people (farmers, harvest, get it?) should vote Dem. She makes this assertion despite the fact that the entire federal slate and state constitutional offices are held by the GOP. She's is a total failure, but that's the today's Dems. They've scared off people in the middle. Trump will win Nebraska with about 65% of the vote.

And as a lawyer, I strongly believe in chain of custody. Back in the old days, I'd frequently be in the Douglas County courthouse the day after election day. There would be all these metal ballot boxes lined up in the hallways. The boxes were brought from the polling places to the Election Commissioner's office where they were counted by the optical scan machine. No way the Ruskies could hack that.

Do I believe every ballot scare that the Republicans try & foist on the electorate? No, I do not.

Do I wonder, however, why the Democrats never, ever, seem to pull back from any scheme to loosen control over the integrity of elections? Yes, I very much do, and I simply don't trust them.

Let's take the example of non-citizens voting. This is a rather simple empirical question. I'd trust the claims of e.g. the state of California that very few non-citizens vote if they ran a random query against the voter database & published the numbers that they found. Generating accurate estimates from random samples of large data sets is a well understood statistical process. Let's do it & see what we get. The fact that no one has done this seems to me to point to the fact that the people in power really don't want this can of worms opened up.

It's hard enough getting states to fight vote fraud when it occurs right in front of them.

Wisconsin found 43 individuals who cast fraudulent votes in the 2018 Fall election.

Of them, 22 times they voted by mail in one state, and in person in Wisconsin. The rest voted in one town, then drove across the state line and voted again.

Then there was the Dallas City Council election that found 700 fake ballots, a number that was larger than the vote differential in two of the races.

Then there's the problem of missing ballots. Oregon sent out 7 million ballots in 2012 and 2018; and of them 871,000 ballots went missing. How can you have faith in an election in which one in eight of your votes go AWOL?

South Philly judge of elections admits he took bribes to stuff the ballot box for Democratic candidates

From May 21, 2020:
A former judge of elections and Democratic committeeperson from South Philadelphia has pleaded guilty to accepting thousands of dollars in bribes to inflate the vote totals for three Democratic candidates for Common Pleas Court judge in 2015, and for other Democratic candidates for office in 2014 and 2016, U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain announced Thursday.

Domenick J. DeMuro, 73, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deprive Philadelphia voters of their civil rights by fraudulently stuffing the ballot boxes for the judicial candidates and for other candidates seeking office in the 2014 and 2016 primary elections.

Democrats always like to pooh-pooh any accusations that Democrats might take part in voter fraud, but almost inevitably, when real voter fraud comes to the fore, the perpetrator is a Democrat. In this case, it was Democrats cheating other Democrats, but we know that they have no compunctions against cheating Republicans as well. You'd think that their candidates and ideas were so bad that they only way they can win is by cheating. And you'd be right.

Every election authority should publish a list of who voted and who was registered. Not who they voted for but if they voted. If they don’t do this I assume they are hiding corrupt votes. I have heard reports where more people voted than were registered, if the procedure is grey, it needs to be made black and white.

Gee, I wonder why.

I worked as an election judge, and as an absentee ballot "receiptor" for a few election cycles and I'm still not clear what the cheating scheme would look like.

I would verify the signature on the outer envelope against a file of registration cards, change of address cards etc. It was not hard to do. The sigs really are unique. Upon verification I marked that in their record so they could not vote again.

Also I was an election judge and there was a whole process where the voter signs the book and gets a sequentially numbered ballot. After the polls closed all the precinct judges would reconcile the numbers to make sure everything added up. I didn't do every job so there is a lot I don't understand. But I understand reconciliation.

The possible problem I see is "finding" ballots late on election night. You could have tray of ballots with all the identifying info stripped off. They would then be scanned with the rest.

But the voting numbers would have to add up. Any polling place manager could compare the number of votes reported with those at the secretary of state database. Hell, anyone could compare precinct numbers with the state. If "extra" ballots were thrown in, it would stick out.

So I wish someone would come out with a clear theory of the crime so I could understand and know what to look for.

Bill Peschel: Were all 7 million ballots sent back in voted on and returned? After years of calling names on the voter rolls, I think that 871,000 moved or indifferent voters sounds about right. If they weren't used to vote, what's the problem.

The Dallas thing sounds pretty bad, but weren't they over to overturn the vote when the numbers didn't add up?

When I voted in Dallas in 1980 it was on a old lever system. That's a method I have no experience with.

Yancey Ward said...

Voting in person with photo ID, over a weekend, on a paper ballot, and you get your right index finger dipped in indelible ink is the way to go. Simple, cheap, and hard to rig. Why I don't trust mail in voting is that the Democrats in control of a lot of these processes can never answer simple questions like, "How many ballots have you mailed out", or "How many ballots were printed", or "How many times did you have to give a voter a provisional ballot because the records showed his mailed vote had already been counted?"

And it should be illegal in main-in voting for anyone other than the election officials, the voter, and the postal service to touch a ballot before it arrives back at the counting room.

Carol said...

See, I go through this with my local party too. They just know something fishy's going on at the elections office, but they can't say what it is. So they fall back on teh college students voting in two states!!

Which could be a problem because there is no single national voter database to cross-reference. But we do have state database, and if someone tries to vote twice here the extras will be kicked out.

I was even on a committee to go downtown to investigate! But after the admin showed us how the verification system worked, the accusers folded. Until the next election.

So with the paper ballot system, I'm skeptical. It seems more like one of those things you say when you lose.

Pretty stringent rules in Puerto Rico about how to get an absentee or early ballot.

With a few definite exceptions, you can't. Rules are here but in Spanish. http://ceepur.org

I think that less than about 1-2 percent of all ballots are not cast in person on election day.

With voter id cards on paper ballots marked with pencil.

We typically get 70-80% turnout. Not just of registered voters but of entire over 18 population.

And in 50 years here, I have yet to here a joke about the dead voting.,vote, early vote often or the like.

Election fraud doesn't happen here. Our logistics make it physically impossible

Like Achilles, I live in vote in the King County area of Washington. Since we went to all mail in voting, the only thing you can check is whether your ballot made it into the system. You cannot verify that your ballot got counted the way you marked it. Before mail in balloting, King County would regulary find boxes of ballots in car trunks and even in Elliot Bay - and every single time, ALL of the ballots were for the democrats.
Now if there was an actual paper trail that the citezen could follow that showed their ballot got counted as they had marked it, and we made sure ONLY citizens voted and we cleared the voter rolls of inactive/dead/not eligible/etc. voters than maybe mail in would not be the potential for fraud that it is.
Also, we did not go to all mail in voting in Washington 6 months before a major election. It took a couple of years.
Personally, I think everyone should vote in person and show valid ID. Absentee voting should be for certain cases - like service persons out of state - only.
Finally - the only reason to push this hard for this on such a short time frame is to throw the election into as much termoil as possible and yes, steal it for the democrats.

They promote open borders, getting rid of the electoral college, capitalism and giving illegal aliens the vote as well as a Wuhan-flu check.

All of our personal data is hacked, our phone calls are recorded but sure, a National mail in vote makes perfect sense. Screw them.

MD Greene said...

In Oregon, which has had online voting for years, my understanding is that every signature is verified, which involves a lot more work than verifying some occasional votes.

Another potential problem is that variation in state or county voter list maintenance. In some places, the registrars check death lists, in other places queries are sent to people who haven't vote in four or six or 12 years. People studying such in California found one two-bedroom apartment down by the port with 28 registered voters who participated in an election. An anomaly, yes, but every false vote cancels out a legitimate one.

I've moved a number of times and lived in several states, and I never once have notified a county registrar to get my name removed from the list of registered voters. If we're going to mail ballots to everybody who's on the lists, there is going to be some fraud, period. We need to tighten up those lists by 2018 for this election.

Finally there is the utter unreliability of some local post offices. In the days when we sent DVDs back to Netflix, a truly striking number of our square red envelopes never reached Netflix, which suggested deliberate postal employee shrinkage. In addition, after we moved, the forwarding was occasional at best -- we addressed it by cancelling our magazine subscriptions, switching all our financial accounts online and (to keep junk piling up on the doorstep) telling the post office to consider us dead. In short, USPS incompetence as well as fraud could deprive some voters of ballots.

This may sound snotty and elite, but I'm not sure it is unfair to expect voters to make some effort to vote -- either by showing up at the polls or requesting an absentee ballot. Undervoting in these circumstances tends to reflect general disinterest in or ignorance of the candidates or ballot measures at issue, which is a message in itself.

I saw this happen, the primary of 2016 in Chicago. A possibly college student came in, said he was registered in the suburbs, but could he vote here in the city? Sure! says the election judge, and gives him a ballot. There would be no way to counter-check his voting, because he did not even fill out a registration form for the city.

The way ballot harvesting works, Carol, is that the party canvasser goes to your door, asks if you have a ballot, and either offers to fill it out for you, or simply tells you to sign it. The harvester than marks the ballot for the candidate of choice, and takes it away to be counted. Or, if you have already marked your ballot, and teh harvester sees that you voted for the wrong candidate, your ballot gets lost on the way to get counted.

I don't know that I'd call it a scare, more like an antecedent.

That is, if Joe Biden were to win the presidency in a broadly mail-in ballot election, a substantial portion of Trump supporters would simply not recognize it and would resist any post-Biden directives they disagree with. And by resist I don't mean passively.

So, for the good of the country and to keep Civil War 2.0 on its current low simmer for a bit longer, I'd say mail-in ballots are probably a losing proposition for all concerned.

Particularly since they'd be invoked long after epidemiologists themselves were urging a long overdue return to normal.

Differently put, mail-in ballots are already long past their sell-by date.

Gordon Scott said...

I was an election judge in Minnesota for 30 years. Minnesota has election-day registration at the precinct. It used to be that a person needed a valid state ID to register. Then, it was allowed to be any sort of ID if a registered voter in the precinct vouched for you. But that was too difficult, so they started allowing a utility bill to substitute for ID. Note: Xcel Energy doesn't check IDs when you sign up for service.

Here's how to vote fraudulently:

Show up at the polls. Ask to vote. When the election judge points out that you don't have the right proof of identification and residence, curse the judge and stomp out.

Meet a guy outside who says, "Hey, friend, no problem. I'll vouch for you." Reenter the polling place, have the voucher vouch, and you're handed a ballot. Fill it out and drop it in the box.

If--at that moment--someone had a means to prove that the voucher and voter were lying, nothing could be done, because that ballot is in the box and has been counted by the electronic counter. There is no way to distinguish that ballot from any other. It's a vote.

If the voucher and voter collude right in front of the judge, within his or her hearing, but insist on the voter proceeding, the judge administers an oath to the voter. If the voter swears, the judge has no option but to allow the voter to proceed.

Fill out a registration form at the DMV. Give a false name and false address. Have a confederate at the address return the confirmation card mailed out by the clerk. Bingo bango, you're a voter, and no one had to see your face let alone an ID.

Have someone rounding up potential voters. Have vouchers standing by when the bus rolls in. Give a voter a pre-filled ballot, and tell him to put that ballot in the machine and bring out the blank ballot ballot the judges gave him. Give him two packs of cigarettes. Fill out the ballot in the key races. Repeat.

In every one of these the fraudulent vote is already in the box and cannot be removed.

And guess who cheated in an election? Republicans.

“The operative, Leslie McCrae Dowless, was charged with three felony counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of conspiring to commit obstruction of justice and two counts of possession of absentee ballots, according to court documents.

Allegations that operatives working for Dowless illegally collected, and sometimes filled in, absentee ballots on behalf of Republican Mark Harris’ campaign emerged shortly after the Nov. 6 election. They caused the state to hold off certifying Harris’ apparent narrow victory over Democrat Dan McCready.

The state Board of Elections, during four days of hearings last week, heard evidence of what election officials called a well-funded and well-organized campaign to tip the election for the state’s 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, which stretches southeast from Charlotte.

The hearings ended with the board ordering a new election, with an official calling the first one an “absolute mess.””

There is a countervailing view on what pdjt is doing, fussing about mail in ballots. He wants them to happen.

If he didn't want them he'd be all in on them.

Rationale is that Biden voters are younger and don't do mail. Some large percentage of under 30s have never mailed a letter in their lives. Another large cohort have no mail address. I find that hard to believe but there seems to be some evidence supporting it.

So pdjt's wailing is really "please, Brer fox, don't throw me in the briar patch"

Remember back when he was elected he formed a committee to look into voter fraud. Lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth. With great fanfare he changed the committee name and structure. People thought it went away but it has been quietly at work all these years.

Don't know if this is wishful thinking or real but one report said that they are matching up college students that are registered twice. They will be told, officially that this is illegal and if they don't deregister one address, and especially if they vote twice, they will be processed criminally.

The system is so full of holes it beggars belief that anyone could say, with a straight face, that voter fraud hardly happens. Here we have a news story of a couple of days ago, where the USPS delivered two bundles, neatly tied up with string, of absentee ballots, 81 different names in total IIRC. All delivered to the apartment address of a single little old lady. As a bundle of very distinctively marked Absentee Ballots OFFICIAL, that means they were all produced and mailed at the same time, en masse, with nobody at the Registrar's office cross-checking or managing to notice this huge glaring incongruity, all the way through the postal system, with nobody curious enough to wonder why 81 people with different names all live in the same tiny apartment and all are getting Absentee Ballots. How many professionals in the course of their duties had to 'pretend not to notice' something like that? Excuse me, how many professional Democrats?

It's a great catch-22 that there is no evidence of voter fraud. Without the requirement for a voter to present themselves at the polls with a valid I.D., it is extraordinarily difficult to prove fraud, and extraordinarily easy to perpetrate fraud.

In areas where voter ID's are required, there are significant numbers of people who are denied a ballet because they lack ID's. That's how you prevent fraud and that's how you prove fraud.

It is not a problem that too few people vote. It is a bigger problem that too many under-informed people vote.
