"[O]ne of the biggest obstacles to dining in a restaurant, renewing a doctor’s appointment or going back to the office is the prospect of having to use a public restroom..."

"... a tight, intimate and potentially germ-infested space.... Laura Maxwell is eager to find an entertainment option that would let her take her children, ages 11 and 13, out of the house safely. Maxwell, who lives in San Luis Obispo, would happily return to the Sunset Drive-In, but...  'Bathrooms are a problem,' she said. 'They’re huge contact places, and if you’re shedding the virus, it’ll be all over. Maybe they could just open up without bathrooms and people would know in advance and make the decision not to go, or to wear Depends.'... 'Americans have always had a fear of contamination from public restrooms,' [said the president of the American Restroom Association.] 'What we’re seeing now is part just heightened anxiety, but it’s also part reality-based. Public restrooms in this country generally have open toilet seats — no lids — and high-pressure flushes create a plume of droplets that extends at least six feet.'... Going away: Push-button soap dispensers, and those high-velocity hand dryers that can blow germs across an entire room.... Outdoor venues might seem to be the easiest to reopen, but whether they are sports stadiums, concert facilities or parks, visitors still eventually need to go.... The American Hiking Society has recommended that people limit their walks to places in their neighborhoods, in part to avoid having to stop to answer nature’s call.... Even police officers are having trouble finding a place to go during their shifts. Coffee shops are closed, and fire stations formerly hospitable to other first responders are taking a newly cautious approach. In Manchester, Maine, the fire station restroom was closed to the state and county cops who usually pop in. 'No law enforcement,' said the sign on the door."

From "The need to go is a big barrier to going out. Why public bathrooms are a stumbling block for reopening" (WaPo).

I'm surprised WaPo didn't bring up the gender equity problem: Women need bathrooms much more than men do.

Wash your hands and don’t touch your face. That’s your new normal. Get used to it. Or take the red pill and realize that this panic is bullshit and you can go back to your old life without freaking out because your kids can’t get or spread it and you already survived the first wave. But failing that epiphany you can still just wash your fucking hands and calm down.

Public restrooms are a petri disk of pathogens in normal times; this person is worrying about them now?

On a trip to Europe a few years ago (Italy I think) there were public toilets available in some spots that were separate structures, resembled a permanent, sort of port-o-potty. Large enough for just one adult and ADA-type accessible. For the cost of a euro you would enter the single user unit, do your business and exit. The next person was not able to enter - the door was locked - until the unit did some sort of automatic wash down.

Perhaps we need something like that here.

Howard Hughes had nothing on these Pandemic germaphobes. The method du jour for McDonalds on I-75 this weekend was that you can go inside and order a take out, and use the restrooms while you are there.

But one we stopped at yesterday refused all admittance to the inside. Not a good idea. And we could not find the drive thru toilets.

Or, you don't use the bathroom if you are afraid. If people follow basic restroom hygiene, the diners who used the bathroom might be the cleanest at the table.

This is probably all moot. If there is no resurgence, all of this talk will seem silly. If infections/deaths go up again, none of these precautions will matter since dining in will not be an option.

Actually, I can't recall the time that the prospect of using a public restroom caused me to not patronize a place of business. Maybe it was because my childhood home had a shed used for storing lawn mowers and the like which had been a four-seater- two for each side. During my childhood, I occasionally used the four seats for what they were intended. Maybe because in Latin America I used restrooms with much lower sanitary standards, without any harm to my health.

The WaPo has the vapors.

"'Bathrooms are a problem,' she said. 'They’re huge contact places, and if you’re shedding the virus, it’ll be all over"

Lots of assumptions here: that virus remains "active" on bathroom surfaces, that a lot of it gets on hands, that kids don't wash hands, that kids will stick hands in mouth or nose after visiting bathroom, that kids will then get sick.

The insanity epidemic has yet to subside.

The problem is so many stupid people who are falling for a scam.

The only people who should be afraid of COVID-19 have underlying health issues and are elderly.

Kids and middle aged mothers have more to fear from the flu unless they are morbidly obese.

That is why democrat governors sought to make sure as many of people died as possible forcing COVID-19 positive patients into nursing homes and shut down schools.

This is an attack on our society and our economy.

It has nothing to do with preventing COVID-19 deaths.

There have been a lot of stories like this, trying to make people fearful of resuming their normal lives. I'm assuming an ulterior motive. If people are afraid they're gonna die if they leave their homes, there is no chance of an economic recovery. As a good economy was Trump's strongest re-election argument, a really bad economy is obviously going to help Biden.

Plus, there's an added benefit for Democrats: more people in desperate circumstances will lead to more people dependent on government "help". People dependent on hand-outs will support whomever promises them the most free stuff. If you haven't noticed, Democrats just love to hand out free stuff.

Are all those hand-driers going to be ripped out or unplugged? It is to laugh.

Fox News had the story of a 17 year old from Georgia who died from COVID last weekend. While few details were available, it appears this person had other health issues. For example, some kids get cancer. Chemotherapy or stem cell transplants can seriously weaken your immune system. It's rare for someone that young to die from COVID. For example, 13% of all the confirmed cases of COVID in Alabama involved young people aged 0-24 but not one of them has died from it.

If only they designed bathrooms with sinks to wash your hands as the last thing you do.

I'll note on cruise ships, to placate these "but what about" scenarios; they put hand sanitizer stations just outside the bathroom. Thus after you wash your hands, and used the kick plate on the outward opening door to leave the bathroom; you can then add a little hand sanitizer, if you accidentally touched the door.

Re: Clyde

Yes. I used a restaurant bathroom just today and did exactly that. It was a very nice toilet, though -- looked like a deluxe Toto model with the automatically opening lid and everything. They had a sanitizer bottle there just for that purpose.

And then I used my own portable sanitizer after I sat back down at the table.

Not sure how comfortable I would be with a US bathroom, though. The toilets at my office are all open top, and I don't think it would be too easy to redo them. I'm months away from returning to the US, though, so hopefully the plague will have died down to the point we don't need to take such pains.

Used to drive frequently from San Diego to Vallejo. As you left LA there weren't a lot of restrooms. Heading north, a short while north of LA but well past any rest stops there was a copse, maybe a dozen or so trees, 50 yards of so off the highway. There were often cars pulled off right there, and sometimes mine was one of them. Some of the most watered trees in California, watered with essential nutrients needed for healthy tree growth. I rarely saw women watering the trees. But they could if they wanted to....

I imagine there are other rest stops like that across the nation, but that's the only one like that I've used on a regular basis.

Last summer I hiked and camped on the top of Mount Herman in Colorado. Challenging 2 mile trail. Our small group was the only one bringing up tents that day. Lots of women on the trail. By the end or the day, every one of them must have used the great outdoors as their restroom at least once.

Porcelain potties are an amenity of modern life. I do prefer them. Sinks are nice. Air dryers have been installed in most restrooms by insistence of environmentalists. "Save the trees!" Health hazards compared to paper towels? Forget it- it's only humans, a cancer upon the Earth. And a note on paper products- they come mostly from fast growing pines grown in managed forests for the specific purpose of- making paper. They don't come from old growth redwood.

Sort of like the recent discover during the covidiocy that reusable shopping bags are a health hazard- one time use plastic bags are much healthier.

There's this thing called skin that protects people from most of the germs in a public restroom, and there is soap to deal with the others. In addition, almost every business that is open is going overkill on cleaning and sanitizing, so that restroom is probably much less an issue now than it would have been at any point in the last several decades. And of course, for those seriously concerned, how hard is it to carry some wipes and Lysol if the need arises? Seriously, when I traveled in Italy, a roll of toilet paper was always on my person in case needed due to knowledge about how Italians operated public restrooms (travel tip - it was needed at least once).

There really shouldn't be a push to make sure all of society stays closed just because some people don't feel safe with it re-opening. Those who do not feel safe always have the option to stay home, while those who are fine with the risk ought not be prevented from getting on with life.

They ranged from elegant to the portable toilet required at public gatherings and construction sites. The City managers and the mayor thanked us for our efforts but said no.

Thirty years later, citizens and city planners decry the Deplorables for leaving filth and needles on the open sidewalks--neither toilets nor bio-hazard containers are in sight. Solution: blame the victims.
