"No one should have to vote for any party based on their race or religion or background."

"I know that the comments have come on like I was taking the African American vote for granted … but nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve never done that, and I’ve earned it every time I’ve run. I was making the point that I have never taken a vote for granted."

Said Joe Biden, apologizing for what he now calls his "cavalier" statement, "If you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black."

I recommend watching the entire 19-minute interview that got Joe Biden in trouble, but I admit that I haven't watched beyond 6:33, because I got tired of listening to Joe Biden yelling, especially the part — I'll focus you right on it — where he says "Dead! Dead! Dead!":

Please give a coherent interpretation of what you said that is also in line with this statement.

The media would expect at least that much from Trump.

And when he pulled it off they’d label him insincere.

Biden tries to appeal to African Americans based on a common tribal affiliation with the Democrats. But tribalism isn't as easy for a politician to manage after the internet came into play. And African Americans who don't affiliate with the Democrat tribe also don't have to put up and shut up. And it's a beautiful thing.

Yeah, very amateurishly dramatic. I took it in increments. Pandering and usual talking points about Trump acting too late. Biden referenced a column he wrote in Wapo. Would be amusing to ask hi what exactly he wrote in detail, 'cause no way did he create it.

The black joke thing was funny in that the young black interviewer did not smile or take a swing at the softball opportunity to diss Trump. Seemed unimpressed.

Would like to see interviewer with Trump.

The problem with the right wing mob is that their reaction appeals to folks like themselves. What would work better is if they could appeal to black people. Votes are votes, and if you don't get them and can't rely on recounts, you don't get to govern.

Put me on team "someone scripted that for him and told him to make sure he got it out sometime during the interview." given that the interview was remote, I wouldn't be surprised if he had that and a number of other quips on a cue card someone was holding for him. I know lots of black Puerto Ricans. Married to one. Never heard of one calling themselves "African-American" or even black. They consider themselves "Puerto Rican"

If it is percent of population, then Delaware is #10.

"campaigning in Alabama in April [1987], Biden talked of his sympathy for the South; bragged of an award he had received from George Wallace in 1973 and said ‘we [Delawareans] were on the South’s side in the Civil War.”

And I think wow, just wow! If a Republican presidential candidate had said that, then the media would have made sure that everybody, or almost everybody, knew about it. The whole country would have been talking about it.

Instead I'll bet most people in this coming election will never hear this.

As for the interview I listened to the whole thing. And I don't know whether Biden was telling a joke or not. He sort of sounded serious. As if he were offended at the idea of a black person not voting for him.

If it was preplanned, that is instead of something that popped out of his mouth, then I'm sure it was supposed to be a joke. But if that was the case, then he messed it up. And I think the guy talking to him was irritated there for a moment.

By the way, in the background who was trying to tell him to stop? Was that his wife?

Here's my second reaction.

One of the things I like about Donald Trump is that you know what he thinks and you where he's coming from and you often know why. You can't take what he says literally quite often, but on the other hand a person can figure it out. There aren't many secrets with Trump.

There are for instance no terrible skeletons hiding in Donald Trump's closet.

Now compare Trump to Joe Biden. I think Joe Biden is a conman and he has been all his life. But his slickness is slipping and the truth, or a version of it, is coming out. And because of that he is achieving a kind of "honesty" that he never previously achieved. I have not spent that many minutes in my life watching Joe Biden, but I think every time before that I ever watched this guy, and I'm talking years ago, I had the thought: "This guy is lying and he thinks he is very clever."

But I didn't have that thought this time.

Actually, it has quite a bit in common. In 1965 it was collectivist and statist (racism being a primitive form of collectivism and segregtation a racist form of statism); now, the collectivism has altered its shape, and the statism changed its alleged goals. But it's still collectivism and statism.

If Trump and Parscale have a lick of sense, and they do, they will produce a barrage of ads targeted at the black community. Not just highlighting this insulting, patronizing gaffe, but showing Trump picking up civil rights awards from Jesse Jackson etc. for integrating Mar-A-Lago at the same time Joe Biden was gladly accepting the endorsement of George Wallace in his first Presidential campaign. Use the word “respect” a lot, and demonstrate it in action, and it might be amazing just how much of the black vote he can peel away. Even 25% would give him an absolutely massive landslide victory.

Yes, that line about Democrats being the real racists gets overdone. It's the kind of stupid thing Dinesh D'Souza relies on ad nauseum. But so long as the opposite, also inaccurate notion, that the Republicans are the segregationist party gets bruited about, you're going to hear about the Democrats being the real segregationists. Wallace was a Democrat and for all that the two parties have changed and exchanged constituencies, the fact that he had a home in the party of FDR and Jimmy Carter isn't something that should be forgotten.
