Biden promised to pick a woman VP, but because they are women, the possible choices are all under special pressure over the Tara Reade allegation against Biden.

This is the old backwards in high heels problem all over again!

Or is it?

This is the trouble with affirmative action. You get advanced to the front, but it comes with a catch. Biden wants a woman partner to help him out with woman things. Where's the feminism in that?

I'm reading "Here’s What Biden’s VP Shortlist Said About The Kavanaugh Allegations/Whichever woman Joe Biden picks to be his running mate will have a lot of explaining to do on past positions about sexual assault" (in The Federalist).

I've only read the headline so far, and I am irked. Female candidates should have the same status as male candidates, not special woman's work. We missed our chance to get a female presidential candidate, and a female presidential candidate is, clearly, required to take on all the work of the presidency. The equality of the sexes is locked in. But with a VP candidate, we have some mixed up ideas about what this person is for — not so much the backup President, but someone to help get through the election. Biden wants the show of having a woman, and now he particularly needs a woman to vouch for him as he's accused of sexual assault.

It's woman's work!

What a disgusting predicament. Now, let me try to read the article. Ah, this does not tell us what the various women are saying now about the Tara Reade allegations as they offer themselves to Joe Biden for his purposes. It simply collects what they said about Kavanaugh. So this sets them up to look hypocritical and ludicrous when they clamor for the big man's attention.

Biden should do his own work here. So far he's been silent. I want to say he's hiding, but I read this in the New York Times: "Joe Biden Is Not Hiding. He’s Lurking." That's a column by Michelle Cottle. Her idea is that Trump is destroying himself, so the best strategy is to let him. And:
[Biden] has to pick his moments, especially with personal appearances, to avoid seeming to undermine the president during a national meltdown. Criticisms must be targeted and measured... [W]ithout a frontal assault, he will have a tough time getting attention. The media respond to heat more than light. But that is Mr. Trump’s turf, and those who try to play on it tend to get burned.
Mr. Trump's turf is heat, and if you play on it — I picture a flaming golf course — you get burned.

None of that excuses Biden for doing nothing about the Tara Reade allegations when the women who are in the running for the VP nomination are all getting pressure to address the "woman's" issue.

I'm seeing this at BuzzFeed News: "Democrats Will Have To Answer Questions About Tara Reade. The Biden Campaign Is Advising Them To Say Her Story 'Did Not Happen.'/Joe Biden has yet to personally address Tara Reade’s sexual assault allegation, but his campaign has circulated talking points." Biden is silent but his campaign sent out talking points "earlier this month":
“Biden believes that all women have the right to be heard and to have their claims thoroughly reviewed,” the talking points read, according to a copy sent to two Democratic operatives. “In this case, a thorough review by the New York Times has led to the truth: this incident did not happen.”

“Here’s the bottom line,” they read. “Vice President Joe Biden has spent over 40 years in public life: 36 years in the Senate; 7 Senate campaigns, 2 previous presidential runs, two vice presidential campaigns, and 8 years in the White House. There has never been a complaint, allegation, hint or rumor of any impropriety or inappropriate conduct like this regarding him — ever.”...

Biden’s campaign’s talking points say the [New York] Times story served as proof that Reade’s allegation “did not happen” — but the story did not conclude this, nor did it conclude that an assault definitively did happen...

The Biden campaign also pointed to the former vice president’s lead role in crafting the Violence Against Women Act....

"I think this case has been investigated,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar said in an MSNBC interview earlier this month, pointing to the New York Times article a few days after its publication.... “I know the vice president as a major leader on domestic abuse. I worked with him on that. And I think that, again, the viewers should read the article. It was very thorough.”...

Sen. Kamala Harris said in a recent podcast interview that Reade “has a right to tell her story” and that she could “only speak to the Joe Biden I know. He’s been a lifelong fighter, in terms of stopping violence against women.”
Straight out of the talking points!

AND: I'm seeing this, in Politico this morning: "Tara Reade allegations stir Democratic unrest/Democrats are reassessing the potential damage to Joe Biden after new details surface." Maybe some delurking is in the offing.

"Female candidates should have the same status as male candidates"

Male candidates are never picked because they are male. Like it or not, female candidates have always been picked because they are female. Until that changes, female candidates will not have the same status. If they didn't have a different status, they wouldn't have been picked. It may not be right, but it's where we're at.

There is no "Biden".
He has no personal judgment here.
He is just a hired figurehead.
What you have, as far as decision making goes on that side, is a collective entity. A committee.

As for the "press", they have no independent existence either. It is a centrally managed machine.

The lady was complicit in her Biden affair or she would have filed a police report right away, as if a street bum had fingered her instead of a celebrity.

She was flattered by the attention, then told friends to milk the attention for even more, and finally years later complains formally to get yet more psychological self-affirmation out of it.

Biden has to answer for a particularly clumsy seduction technique but it's normal courtship ritual. Celebrity and woman, typical case thereof.

Believe the woman if she files an instant police report; otherwise she's of two minds and was getting something out of it for herself.

In particular she was not sending the negative signals that the even clumsy guy needs to check that it's still consensual.

You can't build a stable legal structure out of MeToo.

So are you implying that "any woman will do" so that we [women] can stake our claim [just like the AAs did with Obama]?

Did you actually think that Hillary was a better choice for POTUS than Trump? Really? Even with all her years of f*ck ups? With her years of protecting her hound-dog husband (and destroying the women he prayed upon)? Her years of enriching herself at public cost? With blood on her hands? If so, then all for the sisterhood and none for society?

Biden's response to the Hunter Biden situation was terrible, even with advance notice. I don't think journalists want to ask him the question until his campaign can assure them that he can deliver an answer calmly without challenging anyone to a pushup contest or calling them a lying dog-faced pony soldier or whatever. And I don't think his campaign wants him to address the allegations until they can ensure he won't meander off into incoherent babbling.

The trouble with affirmative action is that it's promoting people based on things that have nothing at all to do with the position they are gunning for. It has zero to do with their capability in doing the job. And you know this. Selecting someone for VP based on what's hanging between their legs is hardly a standard. Admitting someone into a university based on the color of their skin, or gender, or not admitting someone into a university based on those same criteria- is not a standard. It's gaming a system to come up with a desired outcome.

But who is desiring that outcome? And at what cost? Is Stacy Abrams getting 2 bonus points for being a woman and black? Does that mean she's AOK for being the person who is destined to step in when Uncle Joe is wheeled out to the hospital? Think about Stacy Abrams. Go check out what she has said, what she thinks, what she has accomplished (if you can find anything). Is this to b ignored because she comes sans penis?

Apparently.

None of Joe's 'candidates' for VP have said anything that resembles their statements on Kavanaugh. Not even close. The press has this on as much lockdown as they possibly can. Most Americans still do not even know that Joe has wandering hands. That he's feeble minded. That he has a history of corruption with foreign governments. Whoever Joe selects as VP has a lot to diffuse. Being a woman or a man- it's not going to be easy for any of them. But to have ANY credibility, one of them should at least acknowledge that there is a problem there.

There's Vicki Hearne's vision of feminism, akin the James Thurber's, that women do what they enjoy doing. Including sending their husbands on quests and getting back at annoying relatives.

What's different with today's feminism is that it's vicarious and nobody enjoys it except bemused men.

Bunch of nonsense about what women, or anyone else thinks. The main factor which needs to be understood is that Biden is a Democrat, so he will escape all of this hyped up nonsense. Ask yourself this question: did it hurt Ted Kennedy's renomination after his driving led to the death of a young woman and her unborn child? No, no it didn't.

John Borell said...

So Brett Kavanaugh was always about politics, not sexual assault.

Fucking shocking.

Here's what I'd like, due process for anyone accused of something like this, regardless of what political party they belong to.

And a fair shake given to anyone accusing someone of something like this, regardless of what political party anyone belongs to.

But we will never get that, not when some accused have been "a lifelong fighter, in terms of stopping violence against women."

Spare me the bullshit.

If Joe Biden were someone with a spotless history of keeping his hands (and nose) to himself, then Tara Reade's allegations would seem to be in Blasey-Ford territory, ridiculous and absurd. However, the copious video evidence shows Biden to be a serial Space Invader, and I'm not talking about a forty-year-old video game. This was always going to be his weakness. The allegations are plausible precisely because we have seen Biden making women and girls uncomfortable for decades. Someone who is willing to paw and sniff women and girls in public would no doubt take advantage of his high-status Senator privilege to do more in a private situation where he thought he could get away with it, and probably did. Tara Reade is the tip of the iceberg, and we all know that. Biden wouldn't have done something like that just once. We know that Congress had a slush fund that paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars in hush money for sexual harassment. How much of that is Lightning-Fingers Joe's tab?

Well, no "complaint, allegation, hint or rumor of any impropriety or inappropriate conduct like this" after the NYT allowed the Biden campaign to edit the NYT's coverage of their candidate.

New York Times defends taking Biden campaign edits for report on sexual misconduct allegation against him

The New York Times’s investigative report ended originally with a line that read: "The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable." However, the second part of that line was removed soon after publication. The paper said immediately in a public statement that the clause was deleted from the report because it contained “imprecise” language.

I guess by "imprecise" language the NYT means language that was not precisely what the Biden campaign wanted.

Points:

1. The NYT didn't say it did not happen - so the campaign lied in their own press release.

2. New and additional details and contemporary corroboration have emerged since then.

3. This is probably now the single most corroborated one of the "decades old" claim of sexual assault that has emerged in recent times. Compare to Brett Kavanaugh, which literally had full scale senatorial hearings and special coverage based upon the claimant's statements and contradicted by her own recollections and contemporary parties.

I could go on. To sweep this claim away because it's problematic is to put a bullet into #metoo

President Trump didn't set out to implement a policy to "help" minorities, he instituted policies to increase employment...for all.

That was my observation, in the first week he started giving daily covid pressers. Some networks started to re-run the presser, to boost his exposure. The media picked Cumo,(The media runs the DNC, not the other way around) but Cumo has devolved into the delusion of his own greatness, and it is not conducive to converting voters to his camp. Add to that, New York will be used in text books as how not to respond to a epidemic/pandemic. Cumo cannot take swings at President Trump (who followed every single recommendation of his pandemic team) and stand proud on his own decisions.
The media is in a pickle. 20+ candidates interviewed, Biden and Sanders the last two standing. None of the other declared candidates seem viable. This covid event has not seen any cream come to the top, exhibiting anything like leadership. No way Joe makes it to the convention, which would have allowed him to step away after Labor Day, and install some person that would not suffer through a full vetting.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

What we have here is a set of facts at the center of a story that can be proved or disproved, all opinion aside, which is also what sets this story apart from many prior he said/she said news topics that came before, like the Kavanaugh hearings. (Aren’t hearings designed well for fact finding?)

1. Tara Reade worked in Joe Biden’s debate office.
2. She filed a complaint with the Senate personnel office after the incident.
3. She was fired by Biden’s office and went to work with Loretta Sanchez in a California congresscritter’s home office.

It seems all the stories agree with Fact 1 listed so it is not in dispute, giving her at least one thing in her favor that Blasey-Ford never had. But Biden’s statement rejects Fact 2, and like the NYT article ignores Fact 3. Former California congresscritter Loretta Sanchez (D) does confirm Fact 3 and says she was told Fact 2 by Ms. Reade.

That leaves one fact in dispute and the DNC-Media tactic of ignoring that inconvenience Fact 2 and not confirming or disproving it sends a very clear signal that they fear it is true. That’s the only reason the story keeps hanging around refusing to die and why Joe in the end will not be the nominee. He doesn’t just deny the assault. He doesn’t just deny Fact 2 above. He denies that ANYONE EVER accused him of ANYTHING “like that” assault ever happened. That’s a big big bluff, even for Cornpop’s old sidekick. I don’t believe that statement could withstand a real investigation. Ever? Cmon man!

What are people really?

This is all evidence that our minds are not uniform, coherent things. And in particular I think there is a kind of group mind thinking where people subordinate their individuality to what the people in their tribe think.

The Biden campaign have told Dems to say that the NYT did a "deep" investigation and concluded that the allegations were unproven. As if!

Pure opinion by the NYT and a fake one at that. If the NYT applied the same standard to CBF, it should have concluded that CBF's claims were not only unproven but an intentional smear and political hit job.

The above is why the Fake News is the Enemy of the People.

As David Begley and others above have noted, the most hypocritical players in this drama are not the female politicians but the media. I would expect Democrats, even and perhaps especially woman Democrats, to put their feminist concerns on the back burner in order to advance the cause of the Democrat Party. (That might explain Tara Reid's previous reticence on the subject.)....The prime directive of the media, however, is not to advance the interests of the Democratic Party (yeah, right) but to tell the truth...I don't really hold the gymnastics of these women who sincerely want to be VP against them. That's what politicians do. But the hypocrisy of the media is unforgivable. That's not what reporters are supposed to do.

I'm trying to cleanse myself of hypocrisy. The higher moral ground is my turf. Consider this: I think Reid's allegations are far more credible and substantiated than those of CBF, but here's my objection. These allegations are decades old. They cannot be proven or, for that matter, disproven. If this were a court of law, I would never convict Biden on their basis.....I don't know Reid's motivation. She looks to be less politically motivated than CBF, but who knows. I just don't think it's fair to give anyone a veto over someone's reputation and career on such evidence. There's just too much possibility for mischief. People, including women, hold and form grudges that last for years. Some people including women, might be tempted to act on those grudges.

Exactly! Trump said it and almost lost the election over it. But Biden has been caught doing it. I always hated this. Fred Astaire's genius was that he danced to the level of his partner and made them look good. If you look closely at the dances with Ginger Rodgers, you will see him sometimes dancing in eight notes when she is stepping in quarter notes.

But more to the point, look at how he dances with such different partners as Joan Fontaine who really doesn't dance very well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq2uweAMMW8), Burns and Allen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3xNsaTxqwk), Betty Hutton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgTtkhehkLc) and you see him making them look good. Even with the more accomplished dancers like Eleanor Powell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti0FnSLBXSM) or Gene Kelly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1GV5o5xNqU), he adapts to their style and matches their every move (an in the case of Eleanor Powell, keeps her from some of the sillier steps you see in other videos).

Fred Astaire could have danced rings around Ginger Rogers - she didn't do everything he could in high heels and backwards, he did everything at her level to make her look good.

I will reiterate my claim that the greatest entertainment this summer is going to be watching the DNC twist itself into a pretzel to replace senile Joe without giving Bernie the spot. ( The senility itself should be enough, but the Reade kerfuffle accompanying Joe's serial - and well recorded - groping seals the deal.) Cuomo is done; he had his 15 minutes. Who else is there? Bernie played by the rules and came in second. When you disqualify the champ #2 gets the crown.

None of the women who ran can attract enough votes to quiet the Bernie crowd. So we will see the DNC perform a completely authoritarian move to avoid a Bernie candidacy or we will have a communist running under the aegis of the Democratic party.

Hillary looks more like an alternative every day- from the DNC POV. You can be damn sure she's working hard in the background.

Anyway, as many of you say there is not enough popcorn in the world to accompany the show we are about to see!

It's only "women's work" in the sense that she's a woman and anything she does is tautologically women's work. The VP job is to appeal to their affinity group. When Biden was nominated to appeal to union voters and bitter clingers was that "men's work" in any meaningful sense? So female VP candidates do have the same status as male candidates, other than working for more disgusting people which ultimately makes your support for him more distasteful.

We see yet again feminist analysis is ultimately a demand for special privileges: women shouldn't have to do what men do to get where men are.

I have the Astaire-Rogers video collection. An introductory video narrated by their sometime choreographer claimed that Ginger would be off on movie projects while he and Fred developed the routines - the choreographer dancing Ginger’s part. He said Ginger would show up sometime before shooting was to start, learn the routines from him, then rehearse with Fred before shooting began.

I don’t think I have seen a more accomplished dancer than Astaire, but if that account is true, Rogers is up there with the best and, as she is said to have pointed out, she did a lot of it going backwards and in high heels.

Access grows because women get something out of being attended to by a celebrity. It's not so much that morals decline as rank grows; it's that instead of negative signs from the woman they now get positive signs.

The problem here is women change their minds, depriving the celebrity man of signalling due process in the mind-change.

So rely instead on police reports filed at the time, indicating a singlemindedness at the time in a negative direction. So that the guy got signalling due process in the encounter, in all probability.
