These headlines they generate about the stock market are often times unintentionally hysterical.

One day the market opened pretty big and the headline blared something like, "Stocks up on good news about X!" And a half hour after that headline the market had gone back below zero.

The truth is, there are dozens and dozens of reasons stocks are up or down each day.

And these people who write this stuff for a living haven't got a clue.

Journalists are the last people I would turn to for understanding short term stock market fluctuation. They know nothing and they have agendas.

Many many years ago, an avid journalist breathlessly asked Bernard Baruch what the stock market will do that year, given that Baruch was the financial genus of his era.

Baruch replied, "it will go up," as the journalist swooned before the genius.

"And then it will go down," he completed his thought. The journalist looked terribly confused.

Most of a market move is a result of people reacting to what they think other people will do, not specifically their own optimism or pessimism, but what they think the herd is feeling. A trader may not agree with the herd, but will still try too exploit what the herd thinks. Thus creating another herd watching the first herd. Then it all moves together as one unit.

Healthcare stocks are up because Sanders lost, not because Biden won. Important distinction. Stocks would be doing as well or better if Bloomberg had won everything yesterday. All the Dems are bad for stocks in general and healthcare in particular, but Sanders was the worst by a large margin. A big drop in the chance of Sanders winning the presidency = healthcare stocks worth more than they were yesterday. It's that simple.

The market is volatile because of two uncertainties staring us in the face: A possible socialist government under Bernie the First, and a Black Swan event in the corona virus. The danger of a Bernie in the White House temporarily put aside, the markets don't really seem to care about the Black Swan as of 3pm today.

In other words: we can work through the temporary slow downs or even shut downs of some economies around the world (with which we are tied). However we could not work through a socialist regime ruining this economy. Even the possibility had the markets terrified.

Does this really matter all that much in the larger scheme of things? Probably not. For most any other candidate of any age, that’s the sort of momentary mistake a person could make at such a moment amid all the confusion.

But the fact is that Joe Biden isn’t just “any other candidate.” And this isn’t an isolated incident.'

'...A closing note for everyone out there saying it’s unfair to talk about such things. You’d be wise to check your history and make sure that you never once joined in with CNN and the rest of the mainstream media over the past three years asking if President Trump’s various comments were signs of mental imbalance and/or the need to remove him from office via the 25th Amendment. As someone remarked to me on Twitter earlier today, “It’s going to be fun to watch the media defend Biden’s obvious dementia after questioning Trump’s mental health for three years.”'

"Return" it? It wasn't in the hands of the people previously. It was in the hands of U.S.-backed military dictator Batista. Under Batista, US corporations (and the Mafia) reaped great riches out of Cuba.

Also, it's not our place to "oust" foreign governments, corrupt or not, in order to "return" those nations to their people, even if that were our true purpose, but it never has been. Our efforts along such lines have really been avenues by which we insert ourselves into those other nations in order to realize some kind of profit (geopolitical advantage, power, and access to resources). We really don't, as a government, care whether the peoples of other nations are oppressed by dictators, given how much support we've given to dictators.

Our only real animus toward Castro was that he threw out Batista, our partner (stooge?) in Cuba, ending the profit stream to American interests.

Robert Cook said...

"The market is volatile because of two uncertainties staring us in the face: A possible socialist government under Bernie...."

This "fear," if genuine, is borne of stupidity. Even if Sanders became the Dem nominee, and even if he won the Presidency--two giant "ifs"--Sanders would never get his agenda implemented. There would be no "socialist government." The whole of Washington, both houses of Congress, and all sources of money to the members of those houses, would stand as one, opposed to Sanders' promised reforms. (We see this now in the panic over Sanders from the media and from other prominent Dems and the DNC.) It would take an LBJ to get even part of Sander's platform passed, and Sanders is no LBJ.

The fear is not really that Sander would really accomplish all (or any?) of his promises, but that he would normalize the idea among more and more Americans that government should work for the benefit and "general welfare" of the people, and not act as a pimp for the big money interests who expect Washington serve their prerogatives, such that some future president (or presidents) would manage to implement some form of Sanders' agenda over time.

This is prime-grade idiocy. I have no fear that Sanders will "normalize the idea among more and more Americans that government should work for the benefit and "general welfare" of the people," my fear is that Sanders will gut the economy. He is literally an idiot on the topic. He has no idea of how wealth is created. It is very easy to destroy wealth, just ask the poor slobs in Venezuela.
He is also a moral cretin. He had trouble deciding who was the good guy in contests between the US and vile, socialist regimes that impoverished and murdered their own people. It is thirty years after the USSR has fallen, and he still doesn't understand that its government was an abomination.

I don’t think that the Dem power brokers would dare. Too obvious. And, as others have said, Biden has enough good people around him to keep from doing it - unless that was the deal he made to got those two or three (not sure if you can bribe Bloomberg) to drop out. If Crooked Hillary as VP was the deal he had to make to get this boost, then maybe we will see the (short lived) Biden/Clinton.

Biden should have Secret Service protection from about here on out, as probably should Bernie. Definitely if he walks out of the convention with the nomination, and it was confirmed a couple months ago that that comes with a food taster/tester, when Trump’s food taster/tester got sick. So, he would probably be safe from Arkansas Suicide attempts. Esp since the one person more disliked by the SS than skinny dipping Joe is Crooked herself. I think that the 25th Amdt would be the way to go.

Lewis Wetzel said...

The "general welfare" clause of the constitution has been written about extensively by jurists and law professors, including our esteemed hostess.
IMHO, it is a crutch of the collectivists.
Article 1, section 8 of the constitution begins "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;"

So it is mentioned in the context of collecting money and outlaying money, as it must for a common defence of the states, not in the context of the broad powers required to turn the United States into a socialist dictatorship, "democratic" or otherwise.
Indeed, in article 1 section 8, "congress" appears 3 times, "state(s)" appears 12 times, almost always in the context of "the United States." the word "people" appears not once.

Maybe, but, as I understand it, it is more used a rhetorical prop by collectivists than an argument made in court. If taken the way that the collectivists would like, it would make the rest of the constitution (which forbids the feds from doing things) meaningless. You could simplify:
"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;"

To:
"The Congress shall have Power To provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;"

'"Indeed, in article 1 section 8, 'congress' appears 3 times, 'state(s)' appears 12 times, almost always in the context of 'the United States.' the word 'people' appears not once."

"Congress," "state(s)," and "the United States" are imaginary, rhetorical, and legal constructs that refer to and comprise physically real people. That is, government (the state) is people acting in concert to achieve specific and general goals to benefit people. Whether any given government (organization of people) works to benefit the few and ignore or oppress the many or to benefit all of the people has to do with each government, (i.e., who holds power, how the power is organized, shared, managed, limited, the explicit and implicit organizing principles and goals, etc.).

"...as I understand it, it is more used a rhetorical prop by collectivists than an argument made in court. If taken the way that the collectivists would like, it would make the rest of the constitution (which forbids the feds from doing things) meaningless."

What specific prohibitions on "the feds from doing things" are you referring to?

How does this uncontrolled theft and squandering of the people's treasure serve either "the common defence" or "the general welfare" of the United States?

Trick question: it doesn't.

Paying for repair of old infrastructure and building new, along with helping to underwrite the cost of education and healthcare for all American people would be a far better expenditure of our tax funds, with better outcomes.

All the arguments to the contrary are lies meant to continue the pervasive long-term swindle separating us from our money with no benefit to us and all to those getting rich(er) and aggrandizing their power on our tab.
