It's just pictures to give you an idea of what it might be like... fake but accurate...

It is amazing that people take what our Media or China or any other Democrat says at face value.

Why not? Stuff like this is the media's stock in trade.

Screw 'em

Gun range footage from Kentucky used to stand in for an alleged battle in the Middle East. ABC and CBS from the same playbook.

I want to see some footage from Central Park. If I gotta be ventilated in NYC, I’m going to want it to be in a tent in the park. You’ll still be able to hear the birds chirping.

That's shitty...

Someone posted twitter video from the medical staff of some hospital in NY. It was boring- it looked like a slow day in the ER for most any big city hospital. CBS must have felt morally 'obligated' to punch things up...

When your stock-in-trade is fake news, why exempt fake videos?

Nonapod said...

What's funny is that the same characters who pull these shenanigans have the gall to behave affronted when they're accused of being "fake news". It's like an arsonist standing beside a burning building with an empty kerosene can getting all upset about being called an arsonist.

Close enough. Aren't there a lot of Eyetalians in the NYC area?

In a few weeks the recriminations will begin.

People are going to look back at how people are acting and what they predicted would happen. The liars and the propagandists need to pay a price.

Every 12 years the world fails to end from global warming. About half the people stop believing in it.

Something like this you only get to cry wolf once though. The fun part will be the whitewashes of history. The memory holes.

The most important herd immunity we get from this will not be from COVID-19.

The most important immunity will be from misinformation and statist power grabs. It will be much harder next time for Governors and local tin pots to shut everyone down and stomp on and destroy people's livelihoods.

It was a lot like Ken B. multiplied by Ritmo.

I couldn't figure how to write Exponentialed so I used multiplied.

Maybe Exponentialed should be a word.

Stock photos and videos are rarely accurate in any real way.

For example, if there's a story about an airliner (the Boeing 737MAX, for example) there will be a photo or short video of an airliner talking off, landing, or perhaps just sitting there. And the airplane will probably have two engines and it will probably be a narrowbody, but there's good chance it won't be a 737MAX, and it may not even be a 737.

Why? I dunno. Perhaps editors feel that a story can't run without a photo or video, even when the photo or video add nothing at all to the story and often won't match the details in the story. Because people won't read or listen if there's no pretty images to look at? I dunno.

But you may as well get in the habit of assuming that a photo or video accompanying a news story most likely has little if any connection to the actual story.

Crazy thing is - my wife is a nurse and she's about to get laid off. She has 12 years experience in the emergency department of a major city, but for the past year has worked for a cardiac specialist at a hospital facility. Since they are cutting "elective" procedures, they have her down to one eight-hour shift a week. It's a calm before the (supposed) storm and she is on the sidelines twiddling her thumbs.

Like when newspapers do a story about bombing and show a stock picture of a B-52 dropping a load of bombs.

Try "Ken B. raised to the power of Ritmo". I think that gets to what you mean. You can exponentiate Ken B, or exponentiate Ritmo, but you can't exponentiate one "by" the other, or at least I can't figure out how to do it. Exp(x) has only one input, not two.

For that matter, how do we even know that the video is from Italy and not a movie set? When the media plays games like this it calls into question the validity of all their reporting.

It's because the video editors are either to ignorant to know the difference or too indifferent to care. They know that most people probably can't tell apart different kinds of aircraft so why bother? Those of us who are involved in aviation know but we seldom count. It used to be worse. The old version of the movie "Midway" used stock footage of planes that weren't at the battle. I've seen some old TV shows from the 1960s that would show one type of plane taking off and a different type landing. I recall watching one show that showed an Mercury-Atlas rocket taking off, a Titan II/Gemini climbing out, followed by a Saturn. I guess the rocket was getting bigger as it flew.

I'm going to step out on a limb here & posit a reason why CBS deliberately & deceptively chose to run video from Italy versus video from NYC -- the patients in NYC are minority & the patients in Italy are white.

The lack of release of demographic data on the rate of infection among various communities is absolutely bizarre, since it's a standard breakout in epidemiological data sets. We know COVID disproportionately kills the old. We know it disproportionately kills men. But, rates of infection among various ethnic groups? Nada.

My guess is that is that COVID is cutting a wide swath among the black community due to general acceptance of risky behaviors in general, widespread obesity & diabetes, and often poor housing conditions. I also think that the reason that the Governor of MD today announced what is essentially a state-wide curfew for 8PM for the duration can be summed up in one word: Baltimore.

Hogan can't come out & say "Hey, all you clowns in Baltimore -- fly right or Baltimore is going to be full of dying Baltimorons!" so he locks everyone down, including the sparsely populated Eastern Shore & Appalachian west, and the obediently compliant DC suburbs.

tommyesq said...

Good for them - they didn't simply train a camera on a live event and just let it play out - that, after all, is not journalism. Instead, they helpfully edited and provided context. Now I recognize that the context they provided was false, but after all this story ties back to Trump, and we have all been instructed that President Trump has created a special compartment all his own that justifies such editing and context.

This would be the kind of "context" that Ted Kopel wants the media to "provide" to events like President Trump's Chinese Coronavirus press conferences.

This is why the paraphase you hated, Professor, was actually correct. because teh press aren't honest people, they're partisan hacks

Exp(x) = e^x, e=2.7something.

"Ken B. raised to the power of Ritmo" would be (Ken B)^Ritmo.

don't forget the 3 nurses; that took a selfie of themselves wearing garbage bags, and saying that they HAD TO wear them... "because of the lack of gear in the hospital"
of course, if you parsed what they were saying carefully; they never said they were wearing them INSTEAD of PPE... Just that they HAD TO wear them FOR THE SELFIE because of the lack.

So far, the closest i've seen to anyone confirming that garbage bags were Actually being used IN PLACE OF PPEs is another nurse that said: "people are running around CRYING" because of the lack

Here's a chance, for someone to put up a link to a news article about this, and say:
OH NO! it's TOTALLY TRUE!! and i can PROVE IT; with this news article

personally, i'm holding out for someone to get a pic of a nurse wearing a garbage bag doing something OTHER than standing in the hall, posing for a posed pic

gilbar said...

Renatt Brodsky, the director of media and public relations for Mount Sinai, told NBC News that "facts are very different than recent media reports
"The troubling photo circulating in the media specifically shows the nurses in proper PPE underneath (the) garbage bags," Brodsky said.

Looks like you're right.

10 deaths in Milwaukee County as of Sunday morning, all African Americans older than 50.

"At least 43 percent of COVID-19 cases in Milwaukee County are in African Americans, while only 27.2 percent of county residents identify as African American. According to county data, 28 percent of COVID-19 cases don’t have a known race. Eliminating those cases pushes the African American percentage to 59.6 percent of cases."

YoungHegelian said...

@Calypso,

I bring the ethnicity issue up because the health profession has done this once before, with the AIDS "epidemic". They wanted to make sure that AIDS was not seen as just a disease that affected gays & minorities, and so they spread the story that AIDS was inexorably going to spread into the general heterosexual population, like it did in Africa.

Well, sexual mores among middle class Americans are very different than among Sub-Saharan Africans. For one thing, it takes a lot of time & cajoling to get your average suburban white chick to have unprotected anal sex with you, if it happens at all.

Now that the heat's off, we can all be a little more honest about it, as the audience for this medication, Truvada, an anti-HIV prophylaxis, shows.

narciso said...

what's the x value, you still need to imput one,

Calypso Facto said...

@YH: I actually hadn't given ethnicity/race much thought as it applies to COVID-19 deaths in Wisconsin, simply because Wisconsin has very little diversity and I assumed the COVID-19 deaths would mostly be among the majority whites. I was shocked when I read that headline earlier today that EVERY, SINGLE COVID-19 death in Milwaukee County was black. Wisconsin's Dept. of Health Services currently shows 14 deaths statewide. So, in a state that is 6% black, blacks make up at least 71% of COVID-19 deaths. Shocking.

Growing up in Milwaukee, the city with some of the largest, or largest depending on metrics, disparities between black and white quality of life, not surprising. Of course Milwaukee was the city in America with by far the most Socialist mayors so this shouldn't be a surprise.

Anyway, out here in the Bay Area, either the Mayor of SF or a similar brainless bureaucrat explicitly stated the reason for not releasing more granular neighborhood/area data was to avoid racist attacks. Because, of course, being a democrat stronghold, we need to worry about racist attacks.

it's in today's SFGate if you don't believe me.
