"In October, an uncharacteristically flummoxed Pete Buttigieg declared that he washes his face with soap and doesn’t moisturize—drawing a gentle rebuke from [Cosmo editor Jessica] Pels and a correction from Buttigieg’s husband, who tweeted a photo of the moisturizer they keep at home. In January, a far more confident Elizabeth Warren announced that the only product she uses is Pond’s Dry Skin Cream and that, based on some 50-year-old advice from her cousin Tootsie, she never washes her face. The internet exploded with reactions, from praise of Warren’s preternaturally smooth complexion to fact-checks from dermatologists, prompting one political reporter to tweet, 'Politics Twitter is Skincare Twitter today.'"

The husbandly rebuke:
Only $35 for 4.2 ounces
at the manufacturer's website. Costs more at Amazon, so I'm not giving you an Amazon link. I can see how to defend Buttigieg against the seeming charge of dishonesty (from his husband!): It could be regarded as sunscreen.

There is no one-size-fits-all skincare routine. It depends on how oily your skin is, how much time you spend outside, etc. The reason you have to use face moisturizer is because face wash strips your face of all its natural oils, which is why skincare companies love for you to use it. Virtually every brand will sell a face wash, a face moisturizer, and even a facial toner to temporary close pores. Usually warm water from the shower is sufficient to cleanse your face. The best product you can put on your face is sunscreen.
p.s. Chasten?
No. No, we are not.
But in the interest of furthering the discussion I do not want to have:
I shave with a double-edged safety razor and Men's Soap Company Shaving Soap. I use Nivea Post Shave Balm and facial sunscreen.
We all know that Pete's skin cream does not come from a store.
Oh Christ, this is the very brand my wife and daughter got me last year for Christmas. They assured me it was manly.
The guy seems uncomfortable in his own skin.
I used some Pond's cream as slide trombone lubricant (mix with water). Instead of slide oil. Trick from the 50s.
Hydrogate.
Our bathroom at home has an unbelievable number of bottles, containers and tubes of skin lotions, pastes, cremes, and gels, all marketed to and purchased by the wonderful women/teens who live there. The sheer number and variety of products amazes me. I assume some men also buy this stuff, gay men in particular.
Chris for the win.
This is one topic I have never thought about. So, Warren "never washes her face". what does the word "wash" mean in this context?
I'll give Warren credit, she looks incredibly good for a 70 y/o. Too bad her brain is on the fritz.
"In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion."

We all know that Pete's skin cream does not come from a store.
But it comes from a tube.
Answer: Hair, nails, makeup, skincare, shoes, and handbags.
Question: What do women care about that men don't?
It's not the crime, it's the coverup.
Everyone cares about shoes.
I have no doubt Warren washes her face. She probably meant that she never uses soap, detergent, or any other cleanser on her face. I'm pretty sure she rinses her face with water once in awhile. That's washing.
Well, at least it wasn't a tube of astroglide.
Pete is duly chastened.
I never cease to be amazed at straight people's seemingly endless obsession with the mechanics of gay sex.
Soap of some darn kind or another.
I'd be hard pressed to have fewer shoes, or care less about them.
Probably like most cisheterotoxicpatriarchical mynz.
Pretty sure Chasten's "Facial Fuel" is a B1 shot.
I have some Kiehl's facial something-or-other (received as a gift), but I don't think it's moisturizing. There's something in it that cools off the skin and makes it feel a little prickly. Alcohol or something. I don't use it these days.
For the past year or two, I've been using Fancl's all-in-one for men, and then Biore UV Aqua sunscreen. It seems to work reasonably well, hasn't caused breakouts or anything. I don't think either of them is particularly moisturizing, though. Of the two, the sunscreen has brought about the more pronounced improvement in my skin.
Anyone remember when Fred Thompson was pilloried for wearing Gucci loafers to the Iowa State Fair?
"Peter... you moisturize."
No doubt coming to a bumper sticker near you.
Pond's cold cream, that's what it was. I don't recall seeing cold cream at all since them, but it's not my aisle at Kroger. Trombone lubricant.
People ask me about skincare a lot, and I always say the same thing: acid, retinol, sunscreen.
Didn't know that washing needed to be specified.

"I never cease to be amazed at straight people's seemingly endless obsession with the mechanics of gay sex."
In addition to the fact that it's so normalized now in media and real life it's practically unavoidable, I liken it to a car wreck. It's truly sad, disconcerting, shouldn't happen, yet you can't ignore it. It gives rise to a kind of 'humor of the macabre' as the British would say...so positively disturbing and unnatural your only reaction is to make fun of it.
p.s. Chasten?
Buttigieg?
Farmer beat me to the Bateman routine...
Neutrogena has a face moisturizer with Retinol and SPF 30 that's not the least bit greasy. $17.18 with a $3 coupon.
With $35 Kiehl's, Pete provides one more example of the typical leftie tax and spender...
My wife could open a cosmetics counter with all the shit she uses. I wash with mild soap and hot water. She's always slathering something slimy on some body part or other; I can't stand any such treatment. I'm a chapped flake, or a flakey chap.
Women care about shoes. I know, I used to sell them ("Ladies Better", or "Gayoso" shoes as we were in the store directory), and I am married to a woman.
Narr
She cares enough for both of us
I am ready (READY) to ignore the "Moisturizer Affair".
It's only cute when Democrats lie.
Uh oh. Kiehl's Facial Fuel is what I've used , along with Midnight Recovery Eye Cream since I got them as a gift in 2006. But at the Kiehl's Store at Lenox Square it's more expensive. Their hand cream is the best there is too, says the wife.
Never washing your high cheek bones is an old Cherokee family tradition.
Several years ago, as part of an assignment to "entertain" our out-of-country customers, I took them to a well known Minneapolis department store. One of the guests has been asked by his wife to pick up some lotion. I navigated through the store to the lotion section. The poor man was going to cry. He was asked to buy lotion and there were too many choices. He had no idea what kind of lotion to buy. He looked at me with pleading in his eyes to help. All I could do was shrug my shoulders and tell him "you're on your own, buddy"... I wasn't going to be responsible for the wrong kind of lotion.

He's a lying dog-faced pony soldier!
I hope they makeup.
(That's some pricey facial fuel)
So Politico's including the gay candidate in a group it describes as "female politicians" huh? But no rebuke from Althouse?
Is this relationship in trouble? Does it matter? Is Chasten less important than Michelle, Meghan or Kate?
@Lewis Wetzel:

I've started applying sunscreen. That time of year. I think it's a Burt's Bees thing, bought it a while ago at the Soap Opera and it hasn't run out yet.

Well, go ask Kramer.
All the First Lady nonsense is yet another reason why the president shouldn’t be head of state.
Kiehl's is some fancy moisturizer, I tell you whut.
Did they ask everyone "thong or granny panties?"
I'll step AFK now.
I wonder how much they each got paid for that little promotional stunt.

Took me awhile to realize that wasn't a euphemism.
It says something about Buttigieg's social circle that it apparently never occurred to his spouse that maybe a presidential candidate should not announce to America that he uses a $35 face lotion. Remember the grief that Bill Clinton caught when he spent $200 on a haircut (at 1992 prices). I suspect that the number of men who spend at that level on personal care is quite small.
@J. Farmer
"How many threads on other candidates routinely involve anal/oral sex references?"
I don't know, I seem to remember a lot of discussion around whether or not Michelle went down on Barack or if it was the other way around ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Tom T.

I don’t recall that, but I do remember John Edwards’ $400 haircut. The number of people, period, who spend that on personal care is very small. Most people aren’t rich.
"Female politicians are suddenly comfortable talking about makeup and hair. What changed?"
The audience for "news" has become even more female?
You forgot to put "husbandly" in quotation marks.

Quite well, but he got grief because they shut down all air traffic at LAX so the stylist could come onboard Air Force One and cut his hair. I don't think anyone was really focusing on the price.
As a heterosexual male I've never moisturized my face that I can recall. On occasion I'll use skin cream on my hands and arms if I'm especially dry during the winter.
As far as I know, most of the claimed "anti-aging" benifts of certain moisturizers are largely hokum. The tiny amounts of antioxidants and retiniods contained in many skin creams most likely have a negligible effect. There's certainly no benefit to spending $35 for a moisturizer rather than, say $8 for a big thing of Jergins.
Kiehl’s is the awesomesauce.
I don't use moisterizer on the face- plenty oily enough there as my teenage self could well testify. My hands, though, require it, especially in the Winter- my cuticles will otherwise start to dry out and bleed.
The really annoying thing that has started to get dry as I age are my eyes at night. Have to keep a bottle of moisturizing drops by the side of the bed.
Anyone who pays that much for moisturizing sunscreen is either wealthy or stupid.
Remember the grief that Bill Clinton caught when he spent $200 on a haircut
The same lovely woman has been cutting my hair for over 25 years. She started in a tiny two chair barber shop in the belly of an underground parking garage. I followed her as she worked her way up to a shop on street level, then to Newbury Street, to the most exclusive salon in the city. Now she's one of the most sought after stylists on the East coast. Each move resulted in a sometimes disturbing increase in price but I remained loyal. Not coincidentally, we're both rich now...
Wow! I've always been a walking oil slick skin-wise, never used anything on my skin except lotion to prevent my hands from chapping in the winter. Being the greasiest son of a bitch in America has literally saved me thousands on skin care products!
Jimmy Carter used Avon Skin-So-Soft as a bug repellent.
I have been formulating and manufacturing skin care products for close to 30 years, including OTC topicals. People lie about what they use all the time.
To some extent you can clean your face without soap (i.e. surfactant). It is the water and oils in the moisturizer that take away some of the dirt and other oils when rinsing. Like WEN shampoo that has no surfactant. You washing your hair with a conditioner.
The Kiehls product shown by the husband is horrible. The sunscreen ingredients are all chemical sunscreens. It also uses silicones (cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone, dimethiconol), alcohol as a solvent (3rd on list), and throws in some artificial dyes to finish it off.
Raw material cost of about $2 per unit max. Manufacture and fill cost $1 max. Tube cost of $.50 max. Total cost out the factory door $3.50 max. Then comes L'Oreal internal transfer cost, etc.
Pete has been chastened.
As the worldly one, he/they should explore Hindi dung based products.
It's the shit!
Chasten Buttigieg must feel like The Invisible Man. Unlike other spouses, you never hear about him. Never see him on the campaign trail. No references at all. He might as well not exist. Unwanted guest at the party.
Why....it is almost like the Campaign is trying to hide him from public view. :-) (That was sarcasm...of course they are). But think how you would feel being kept hidden away in a closet somewhere. I feel for him. Truly.
When people find out that Mayor Pete is married to another man, expect the shit to hit the fan. Just like the woman in Iowa who cast her caucus vote for Mayor Pete and THEN found out he is homosexual. She was shocked, appalled, angry and wanted to take her vote back.
Ponds cold cream is the bomb. Takes off makeup and moisturizes too. Plus...cheap!!
She is abysmally ignorant. I don't know how she can't know. However, it appears that most of the voting public have their heads where the 'sun don't shine'. We are doomed with such ignorance being able to vote.
BTW -- every dermatologist I talk to says use sunscreen. Must be my Nordic skin.
Uh oh, Igv is Tyler Durden!
My regime consists of a daily gradual application over 10 hours of machining oil and metal grinding dust with occasional exposure to welding and laser flash finished up with a thorough lathering and wash head to toe with Axe body wash. The real secret is the final touch with a set of hand-oiled female thighs placed strategically around my head and agitated in a random motion. The result is very satisfying. Mayor Pete will have to settle for something else.
Pete's other line of defense is "Yeah, my spouse put this shit behind my sink a year or so ago, but I never use it unless he's standing right next to me and makes me use it."

Finally. Somebody with something interesting to say.
Igv, as an actual expert, what do you recommend?
I am more irritated at the idea this topic is enough to pop your eyes out of their sockets ("...eye popping"). Seriously? Why does everything written have to stretch for such drama? I am shocked the writer didn't fit "historic" or "iconic" into the headline.
If conversation about skin care is 'eye popping' what the hell happens to you if you discuss exercise or diet routines? Your jaw drops off, iconically?
My skin is naturally dry, more so in the winter when the air is quite dry. Washing with soap, even moisturizing soap, dries it out too, requiring replenishing with body and face creams. I don't use anything close to that expensive. I hate having anything like hand cream on my hands, so I only use it when absolutely necessary. Hands routinely crack and split as a result. Mrs. stevew feels very badly about this on my behalf - it has always been that way so I don't really notice or care.
But... good thing we are learning all this stuff about Mayor Pete and Beth - now maybe those undecided NH voters will be able to choose. Any word from Amy on her personal skin care regimen? Bernie?
Meanwhile it seems the DNC has published the Iowa results: Mayor Pete for the win with 14 delegates (37,557 votes); Bernie in second with 12 delegates (43,671 votes). Wait, what?
Pop quiz: Match the following Presidents with their preferred skin care product.
1. Truman
2. Eisenhower
3. LBJ
a. Clinique
b. Chanel
c. Estee Lauder
d. Olay Regenerist
Costs more at Amazon, so I'm not giving you an Amazon link.
Why not? It’s money in your pocket, isn’t it? No wonder you’re not a capitalist.
stevew Mayor Pete for the win with 14 delegates (37,557 votes); Bernie in second with 12 delegates (43,671 votes). Wait, what?
Probably the delegates are awarded on a District basis and not on a popular vote.
Just like the Electoral College :-D

The movie. I quit reading at that segment of the book because it was a (several page?) long run-on sentence, but mostly because it was rilly boring run-on sentence....but now I'm wondering if I missed some important information about how Patrick tied his shoelaces.
Chasten Buttigieg must feel like The Invisible Man. Unlike other spouses, you never hear about him.
Other than Jill Biden, I don't believe we have seen/heard from many of the spouses. Only know about Sanders' wife through the FBI investigation of her handling of Burlington College. I don't actually know whether Klobuchar or Gabbert are married, haven't seen Warrren's husband. Haven't seen Steyer's or Wang's spouses. Who am I missing?
As far as the memory goes back, Avon Skin so Soft has been the standard mosquito repellent used by the Marines and Airborne Forward Observers who have to sneak around low in the underbrush for days and nights.
Kiehls is a richer person's gift to themselves. $150 once or twice a year beats new sports cars and Savile Row suits. We can do that after the days when all our money went to Private Academy tuition and Colleges, and Camps and cars for 5 children is over. Now the successful kids earn the money and we putter around and buy Kiehls and take cruises.

Yes, but in a somewhat relatable way. For a man (boy?) who seems excessively smooth and polished, in that untrustworthy consultant way, I think it's actually humanizing to have his spouse puncture this one very minor pretension in public.
There are an inordinate amount of in shape old guys at my gym. At 62 I like to believe that I am one of them. After workouts I shower and shave and then I am out the door. I don't use any skin care products. But, there is another old guy there whose workouts are often timed with mine. A lot of times we find ourselves shaving next to each other. The guy takes about 10 minutes slathering his body from head to toe with skin cream. I just find it gross. I would feel slimy. Doesn't that stuff get all over your clothes? I once ended a relationship, in part, because I found shelves of skin creams and hair products when I used her bathroom for the first time. It was just an instant turnoff. Shallow, I know, but still.
Winter cracked hands - none since adding Smart Balance peanut butter to the diet. Nothing smeared on the skin.

My (life long Democrat) wife was telling me that she thinks BootyBoy is a bullshitter who really never says anything substantive. I mentioned that some people might find it awkward that he is the wife in his marriage. "Oh. I didn't know that he was gay", she replied.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Trump had Melania award Rush his medal of freedom to mark it as affectionate as well as an honor. You couldn't do that with a first husband. It would make it all weird.
"Jimmy Carter used Avon Skin-So-Soft as a bug repellent."
Yes it repeled bugs. Unfortunately, it also attracted homicidal rabbits.
Peanut butter is good in cereal, hot or cold, if you don't care for sandwiches or direct ingestion.

So my comment is incorrect?
Hetero men have no curiosity about the mechanics of homosexual sex. Where would such curiosity come from? An unfamiliarity with anal or oral sex?
If people mention anal/oral sex more frequently in comments about SSM couples, I doubt that the cause is "curiosity." The desire to mock and/or express disgust is the more likely cause.
Personally, I think that such references are in poor taste.

’Jimmy Carter used Avon Skin-So-Soft as a bug repellent.’
That’s fairly common - and it works!
His husband is fond of saying: "It puts the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again."
He changed his last name! Interesting. Married women no longer have to change their name. Many do not. What is the trend among gay couples?
Most soaps and skincare products have moisturizer in them. Parts of my skin doesn't like them, and I've found it hard to avoid.
I wonder whether Buttigieg's partner is clueless or passive aggressive. I don't think that comment will win Buttigieg any votes, not even within the gay community. Maybe if he talked about the time and effort Mayor Pete takes in his manscaping.
I'm not sure how to take Pete Buttigieg being included in a story about female candidates.

I must disagree, my somewhat erudite friend. As a particularly pale specimen of the Sons of Hibernia, I can state from experience that a lifetime of excess sunlight (excessive for one whose ancestors came from an island where it rains most of the time) has left what remains of my hide an interesting study in what short-wave UV does to DNA over the best part of a century. A brief unshielded exposure to the morning sun, during the warmer months, will dependably result in a fresh crop of AKs, SCCs, and BCCs for my dermatologist's attention. Fortunately nothing has shown up so far that requires more than liquid nitrogen, outpatient surgery, or imiquimod to address.
I'll grant that once you're fried, you can't get unfried. But if I want to go out and spend a couple of hours mulching or fertilizing my plantings, I find that 80 SPF Neutrogena is my friend. That done, both the bushes and I are left better off in the end.

Igv, as an actual expert, what do you recommend?
For sunscreen, active ingredients of zinc and titanium. Zinc Oxide and Avobenzone are UVA ingredients. I hate Avobenzone. Zinc and titanium gives a chalky white look, so find one with a slight tint to get rid of the Casper look.
Sunscreens make lousy moisturizers because they are comedogenic. I can't comment on moisturizers as their are to many to choose from. General comment: Peptides do work and any moisturizer without petrolatum is better than no moisturizer.
I recently came across a YouTube video by a female dermatologist extolling the virtues of good old Ponds Cold Cream as the best all-in-one makeup remover/cleanser/moisturizer. She used it herself and recommended it especially if you're a user of cleansing products containing salicylic acid for oil control. I'd always thought of it as being a grandma product, but I bought a small jar and began using it at night in the shower. There's a reason why it's been around for 80+ years.
I've been a religious moisturizer user since I was in my 20s, despite having super oily skin. Now that I'm in my 50s I don't have crows' feet or laugh lines. I am, however, developing a chin wrinkle from too much time looking at my phone!
Currently I'm using an Aveda moisturizer during the day under my makeup and a L'Oreal night repair cream for face and decolletage before bed.
Maybe because Trump's primary appeal had nothing to do with who he slept with. Whereas this Pete guy wouldn't even reach Silky Pony status without it
I'd agree that is the primary reason his detractors attack him, but I ain't so sure it is the primary appeal among his supporters - 'cause if that was the case then every Tom that dicks Harry would be runnin' for office, no?

Also, the guys who work with concrete. Bag Balm to keep the hands from turning into cracked concrete burned stubs.
Over in the other thread, Clay Aiken is right. For most politicians their first instinct when they don’t have some focus group-tested talking points, is to make up some lie.
Some supportive spouse Mayor Pete has there.
It really shouldn't matter what Pete's sexuality is, but he's the one who brought it up, and he's the one who's using it. So it's fair game.
"I bought a small jar and began using it at night in the shower. "
So - what exactly do you do - put it on before you get in the shower and then rinse it off in the shower.
My mom used Pond's (probably why I dismissed it as 'old lady stuff' when I was a teen), but I didn't see her walking around the house with a cold cream mask the way women did in old TV shows and movies, so I'm not sure how exactly you use it. Is it used like a cleanser? Or like a moisturizer? Do you put anything on your skin once you remove the Pond's?
I like Clinique, but I'd be happy to try Pond's. Haven't even thought about it in decades.
Come to think of it, my mom had very good skin - even in her 60's. So I'm thinking I'll give Pond's a try.

Sure. It's like "Discipline", but gentler.
My wife uses a facial cream made by some old biddies in Jamestown, Pa. It's awesome and pretty cheap. Smells good, too.

The complete replacement of leather by latex is the practical difference.
Bag Balm will make your skin udderly soft and smooth.
How does POTUS Petey plan on having kids?
@Yancey Ward: get Systane Lubricant Eye Gel, Nighttime Protection (in the blue and pink box -- don't get the nighttime ointment, which is messy).
Everyone I've recommended it to has reported benefiting immediately.
It really shouldn't matter what Pete's sexuality is, but he's the one who brought it up, and he's the one who's using it. So it's fair game.
And if he hadn’t brought it up, he’d be criticized for dishonesty.
Damned if you do, etc..

It acts as a cleanser and moisturizer all in one, without leaving the skin feeling slick or oily. I take a washcloth with me and once I'm in the shower, I wet my face and scoop a bit of the Ponds out and massage it in. I concentrate on the eyes, sticking my face under the water a little and working it in. Then I'll use the wet washcloth to wipe it off. It gets everything, including stubborn eyeliner and mascara. After a final wipe with the cloth, I'm done. If my skin still feels dry or tight, I'll apply a heavier night cream right before bed.
I do remember the adverts of women walking around with cold cream on. Made no sense to me unless it was just a focus on being a moisturizer. But if you have foundation and the rest to clean off it's great as a cleanser. I have noticed that my skin feels smoother and the pores less noticable.
Ponds now makes cleansing cloths in a packet rather than the jar - the idea being that most women use it as a makeup remover rather than the moisturizing part. Then you don't go through a box of tissues constantly. Caveat: you do have to scrub the leftover out of the washcloth but if you're already in the shower it's no big deal.
What the hell are you people talking about? I don't know half these words.
Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap. AKA Soap! And water, yes, I splurge. If not Dr. B, then Ivory. Something without crap in it. Totally lost on this bodywash thing. Phone tried to correct that to hogwash, not so dumb after all.
To shave? Barbasol shave cream, or whatever is on sale, or was gifted, or is available. If none, Dr. B. Chanel's Egoiste (original) afterwards, my one vanity.
If you have dry skin, Aveeno is pretty good, but that's just what's around. Costco has it.
$30 something for a 4 ounce tube of something that doesn't swallow? Are you nuts?
Thanks for the explanation, Kelly!
