"The 'famous Cosmo skincare question,' as it has become known, has gone viral more than once this election cycle, thanks to some eye-popping answers."

"In October, an uncharacteristically flummoxed Pete Buttigieg declared that he washes his face with soap and doesn’t moisturize—drawing a gentle rebuke from [Cosmo editor Jessica] Pels and a correction from Buttigieg’s husband, who tweeted a photo of the moisturizer they keep at home. In January, a far more confident Elizabeth Warren announced that the only product she uses is Pond’s Dry Skin Cream and that, based on some 50-year-old advice from her cousin Tootsie, she never washes her face. The internet exploded with reactions, from praise of Warren’s preternaturally smooth complexion to fact-checks from dermatologists, prompting one political reporter to tweet, 'Politics Twitter is Skincare Twitter today.'"

From "Is America Ready for a Frank Discussion About Skincare?/Female politicians are suddenly comfortable talking about makeup and hair. What changed?" (Politico).

The husbandly rebuke:

Only $35 for 4.2 ounces at the manufacturer's website. Costs more at Amazon, so I'm not giving you an Amazon link. I can see how to defend Buttigieg against the seeming charge of dishonesty (from his husband!): It could be regarded as sunscreen.

There is no one-size-fits-all skincare routine. It depends on how oily your skin is, how much time you spend outside, etc. The reason you have to use face moisturizer is because face wash strips your face of all its natural oils, which is why skincare companies love for you to use it. Virtually every brand will sell a face wash, a face moisturizer, and even a facial toner to temporary close pores. Usually warm water from the shower is sufficient to cleanse your face. The best product you can put on your face is sunscreen.

This is one topic I have never thought about. So, Warren "never washes her face". what does the word "wash" mean in this context?

I'll give Warren credit, she looks incredibly good for a 70 y/o. Too bad her brain is on the fritz.

"In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion."

I have some Kiehl's facial something-or-other (received as a gift), but I don't think it's moisturizing. There's something in it that cools off the skin and makes it feel a little prickly. Alcohol or something. I don't use it these days.

For the past year or two, I've been using Fancl's all-in-one for men, and then Biore UV Aqua sunscreen. It seems to work reasonably well, hasn't caused breakouts or anything. I don't think either of them is particularly moisturizing, though. Of the two, the sunscreen has brought about the more pronounced improvement in my skin.

Quite well, but he got grief because they shut down all air traffic at LAX so the stylist could come onboard Air Force One and cut his hair. I don't think anyone was really focusing on the price.

Nonapod said...

As a heterosexual male I've never moisturized my face that I can recall. On occasion I'll use skin cream on my hands and arms if I'm especially dry during the winter.

As far as I know, most of the claimed "anti-aging" benifts of certain moisturizers are largely hokum. The tiny amounts of antioxidants and retiniods contained in many skin creams most likely have a negligible effect. There's certainly no benefit to spending $35 for a moisturizer rather than, say $8 for a big thing of Jergins.

I followed her as she worked her way up to a shop on street level, then to Newbury Street, to the most exclusive salon in the city. Now she's one of the most sought after stylists on the East coast. Each move resulted in a sometimes disturbing increase in price but I remained loyal. Not coincidentally, we're both rich now...

lgv said...

I have been formulating and manufacturing skin care products for close to 30 years, including OTC topicals. People lie about what they use all the time.

To some extent you can clean your face without soap (i.e. surfactant). It is the water and oils in the moisturizer that take away some of the dirt and other oils when rinsing. Like WEN shampoo that has no surfactant. You washing your hair with a conditioner.

The Kiehls product shown by the husband is horrible. The sunscreen ingredients are all chemical sunscreens. It also uses silicones (cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone, dimethiconol), alcohol as a solvent (3rd on list), and throws in some artificial dyes to finish it off.

lgv said...

Raw material cost of about $2 per unit max. Manufacture and fill cost $1 max. Tube cost of $.50 max. Total cost out the factory door $3.50 max. Then comes L'Oreal internal transfer cost, etc.

As a particularly pale specimen of the Sons of Hibernia, I can state from experience that a lifetime of excess sunlight (excessive for one whose ancestors came from an island where it rains most of the time) has left what remains of my hide an interesting study in what short-wave UV does to DNA over the best part of a century. A brief unshielded exposure to the morning sun, during the warmer months, will dependably result in a fresh crop of AKs, SCCs, and BCCs for my dermatologist's attention. Fortunately nothing has shown up so far that requires more than liquid nitrogen, outpatient surgery, or imiquimod to address.

I'll grant that once you're fried, you can't get unfried. But if I want to go out and spend a couple of hours mulching or fertilizing my plantings, I find that 80 SPF Neutrogena is my friend. That done, both the bushes and I are left better off in the end.

Igv, as an actual expert, what do you recommend?

For sunscreen, active ingredients of zinc and titanium. Zinc Oxide and Avobenzone are UVA ingredients. I hate Avobenzone. Zinc and titanium gives a chalky white look, so find one with a slight tint to get rid of the Casper look.

Sunscreens make lousy moisturizers because they are comedogenic. I can't comment on moisturizers as their are to many to choose from. General comment: Peptides do work and any moisturizer without petrolatum is better than no moisturizer.

I recently came across a YouTube video by a female dermatologist extolling the virtues of good old Ponds Cold Cream as the best all-in-one makeup remover/cleanser/moisturizer. She used it herself and recommended it especially if you're a user of cleansing products containing salicylic acid for oil control. I'd always thought of it as being a grandma product, but I bought a small jar and began using it at night in the shower. There's a reason why it's been around for 80+ years.

I've been a religious moisturizer user since I was in my 20s, despite having super oily skin. Now that I'm in my 50s I don't have crows' feet or laugh lines. I am, however, developing a chin wrinkle from too much time looking at my phone!

Currently I'm using an Aveda moisturizer during the day under my makeup and a L'Oreal night repair cream for face and decolletage before bed.

Maybe because Trump's primary appeal had nothing to do with who he slept with. Whereas this Pete guy wouldn't even reach Silky Pony status without it

I'd agree that is the primary reason his detractors attack him, but I ain't so sure it is the primary appeal among his supporters - 'cause if that was the case then every Tom that dicks Harry would be runnin' for office, no?

Of course you have never met the real men who work with los manos outdoors in a high desert winter who use crack cream called Bag Balm.

Spend some winters in the Dakotas outside working on radars and get back to me.

I eagerly await what Pete has to offer - that the other candidates don't - other than Teh Gay.

Also, the guys who work with concrete. Bag Balm to keep the hands from turning into cracked concrete burned stubs.

Over in the other thread, Clay Aiken is right. For most politicians their first instinct when they don’t have some focus group-tested talking points, is to make up some lie.

Some supportive spouse Mayor Pete has there.

It really shouldn't matter what Pete's sexuality is, but he's the one who brought it up, and he's the one who's using it. So it's fair game.

"I bought a small jar and began using it at night in the shower. "

So - what exactly do you do - put it on before you get in the shower and then rinse it off in the shower.

My mom used Pond's (probably why I dismissed it as 'old lady stuff' when I was a teen), but I didn't see her walking around the house with a cold cream mask the way women did in old TV shows and movies, so I'm not sure how exactly you use it. Is it used like a cleanser? Or like a moisturizer? Do you put anything on your skin once you remove the Pond's?

I like Clinique, but I'd be happy to try Pond's. Haven't even thought about it in decades.

Come to think of it, my mom had very good skin - even in her 60's. So I'm thinking I'll give Pond's a try.

Sure. It's like "Discipline", but gentler.

My wife uses a facial cream made by some old biddies in Jamestown, Pa. It's awesome and pretty cheap. Smells good, too.

@Yancey Ward: get Systane Lubricant Eye Gel, Nighttime Protection (in the blue and pink box -- don't get the nighttime ointment, which is messy).

Everyone I've recommended it to has reported benefiting immediately.

And if he hadn’t brought it up, he’d be criticized for dishonesty.

Damned if you do, etc..

It acts as a cleanser and moisturizer all in one, without leaving the skin feeling slick or oily. I take a washcloth with me and once I'm in the shower, I wet my face and scoop a bit of the Ponds out and massage it in. I concentrate on the eyes, sticking my face under the water a little and working it in. Then I'll use the wet washcloth to wipe it off. It gets everything, including stubborn eyeliner and mascara. After a final wipe with the cloth, I'm done. If my skin still feels dry or tight, I'll apply a heavier night cream right before bed.

I do remember the adverts of women walking around with cold cream on. Made no sense to me unless it was just a focus on being a moisturizer. But if you have foundation and the rest to clean off it's great as a cleanser. I have noticed that my skin feels smoother and the pores less noticable.

Ponds now makes cleansing cloths in a packet rather than the jar - the idea being that most women use it as a makeup remover rather than the moisturizing part. Then you don't go through a box of tissues constantly. Caveat: you do have to scrub the leftover out of the washcloth but if you're already in the shower it's no big deal.

What the hell are you people talking about? I don't know half these words.

Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap. AKA Soap! And water, yes, I splurge. If not Dr. B, then Ivory. Something without crap in it. Totally lost on this bodywash thing. Phone tried to correct that to hogwash, not so dumb after all.

To shave? Barbasol shave cream, or whatever is on sale, or was gifted, or is available. If none, Dr. B. Chanel's Egoiste (original) afterwards, my one vanity.

If you have dry skin, Aveeno is pretty good, but that's just what's around. Costco has it.

$30 something for a 4 ounce tube of something that doesn't swallow? Are you nuts?
