"'It’s just like a little squirt gun,' she told the group of children, before passing around the small plastic device for them to hold and squeeze."

"At the end of the session, each child received a blue zippered bag containing two doses of Narcan to take home.... In the past three years, the county’s drug prevention coalition has given Narcan training to an estimated 600 young children and teenagers in after-school programs, babysitting classes and vaping cessation courses.... At least 100 young people have returned for additional doses... typically after going through their personal supply.... 'Drugs are bad things that could kill you,' [said a 7-year-old boy]. 'Now I know how to use it. I feel good because I like helping people in danger.'"

From "'Open, Insert, Squirt.'/In This Town, Children Are Taught to Administer Narcan/In rural Carter County, Tenn., health officials have embraced a strategy for stemming addiction: Teaching children as young as 6 how to reverse an overdose" (NYT).

"In Carter County, where 56,000 people live in a cluster of small cities and rural towns on the North Carolina border, nearly 60 people have died from opioid overdoses since 2014."

1 person per 4,660 each year. That's not an epidemiological emergency, it's a moral panic.

I say free-market Narcan and let nature takes it's course.

It's dysgenic to actively try to keep junkies alive, and passively eugenic to let them die if they can't adapt to the modern world and its new chemicals.

Thank you Class of ‘68 for creating the drug culture. More thanks to Mayor Pete; a child of two from the Class of ‘68. Pete wants to decriminalize ALL drugs.

I guess Pete never saw “Old Country for Old Men” where the Texas Sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) said, “If Satan was sittin’ around thinking of how to bring mankind to its knees, he’d come up with narcotics.”

And make no mistake about, the Left’s support of open borders helps the drug cartels and hurts America. One more reason not to vote for Democrats.

The NYT likely created this article to show contempt for flyover people. Maybe they should address the drug problems in the largest cities.

Widespread availability of Narcan makes the decision to use drugs less costly to a drug abuser. Simple economics tells you that this will lead to more drug use, not less, as you've lowered the real cost of doing drugs.

No, it's not a straw man argument: the NYet article called it an "ongoing opioid epidemic". The CDC calls it a "deadly epidemic" and a "crisis" on their 'emergency' website.

I used my own phrase which means the same thing, hence the lack of quotes.

Finding philosophical / moral problems with a small town's effort to save lives is a cold and ugly form of elitism.

I live in a hick town in a county with less than half the population of the article's county. If this town had one person OD per year, which would be about the same rate as the county in the article, I just couldn't get worked up about it.

The reported OD death rate for that county is only 42% higher than the national average.

How about teaching people how to safely use drugs?

That's prohibited by the "moral panic" aspect of the WOD, which is probably best expressed by self-righteous mass murder, e.g. "You fight the war on drugs by executing the drug dealers. In large numbers", or failing that, mass incarceration.

Neither works, of course, but those tough Warriors have some fun in the meantime, dressing up like Nazis to kick down doors and lock people in cages.

That's so sad that little kids are expected to take on that responsibility. It's kind of like the stories I hear from some of my adult patients about how their alcoholic parent would make them drive them to the bar and pick them up later.
Also, there are stories about people who use the Narcan to push the limits of their opioid use, figuring they can be pulled back from the brink. No statistics on how common that is, but definitely hear about it a lot.

True dat.

I don't understand why so many folks beleive jailing/killing everybody who has/uses/sells a substance is the best way to deal with the issues some people have with using drugs&alcohol. It didn't work before, it ain't working now, so why do they think it will work ever?

We already imprison more citizens per-capita than any other country in the world - how many more Americans do you think need to be locked up in order to be "drug free"?

No need to get all cussy about it. My point is that a lotta people, including our own President, are saying the solution to our drug problem is that we need to kill/jail more people. That policy hasn't worked before, it ain't working now, and I don't understand why some folks think it will work ever.

That anyone it’s OK to train the junkie’s small children to save and enable these shitbags is beyond belief.

Ain't saying it's "ok", but it appears at first glance to be "less bad". It's a terrible situation no matter how ya look at it, with not too many good solutions - but I do beleive that showing kids how to use Narcan is less-evil than having 'em watch their parents die right before their eyes.

This is more of an emotional, rather than logical issue (what kinda stats/reports would one even use to prove/disprove that watching parents die is less harmful than giving 'em Narcan?) so I reckon that is just something we're gonna have to agree to disagree on it.

Hmm, "guns" - high capacity "guns"? - and children.

Trump suggests self-moderation, education, and sentences commensurate to crimes. So, for example, you cannot abort (i.e. capital punishment), dismember, cannibalize someone merely because they are characterized as a "burden". Also, mitigation of progressive corruptio, confusion, and other dysfunctional paths.

Roughcoat said...

That policy hasn't worked before

It works if the point is punishment.

I.e., if the point is to make people for helping to screw up society with their drug use and attendant bad behavior.

I'm not necessarily against the "point is the punishment" course of action. Punishment as an end in of itself is not necessarily a bad thing.

Something needs to be clarified here: Narcan is NOT like an EpiPen. You train a child to use an EpiPen on himself when he has an allergic breathing emergency, an all-or-nothing crisis. With Narcan the key phrase is "titrate to effect", in other words, give it only til you see it is having an effect, i.e., bringing the patient around, because as madasHell noted above, slam a full Narcan dose into a user and he will typically come up off the stretcher fighting. Literally swinging at you in a rage because you just ruined his high. You really want a child in that kind of situation, getting thrown up against a wall by a raging addict he was trying to save? Plus, Narcan is not some magical mystery cure for drug ingestion -- it works only on opioids and users these days go for variety.

That and indoctrination (e.g. sexual orientation). Recall that gender refers to both physical and mental sex-correlated attributes. At least it did, before the twentieth century, when the culture, language etc. were appropriated, corrupted, and progressed with alt-beliefs about women, men, children, evolution, and life itself.

War and pollution, no hope of solution.

War (i.e. defensive, not elective), maybe not. However, the progress of social justice zones, abortion zones, and catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform, can be mitigated through reconciliation, rehabilitation, innovation, and curtailing shared/shifted responsibility. The same will be done for the Green blight, and other environmental pollutants, which remain viable through environmental arbitrage.
