BOS to LGA, and back, today. Full day of meetings in the city, NYC. Full flight each way. One guy with a mask on the flight back. Every time I sneeze or cough I wonder. Traveling at least once every week for the next month, 10 or so overnights. Some of the companies I work with are imposing travel bans for their folks - not yet clear if they will approve us traveling to them. Precautionary principle is in force.

Why is the President lying about the number of Coronavirus cases, he says there have been only 15 cases, not true, there’s been 60. He says it’s less lethal, that’s not true a typical influenza virus has a mortality rate of .1% the Coronavirus has a 2 to 3%. No wonder the stock market is going even more crazy after his Coronavirus press conference. Now a whistleblower comes forward saying HHS had staff members entering quarantined areas WITHOUT proper equipment, when evacuees with Coronavirus were repatriated. Then these HHS employees went into the general population after being exposed to Coronavirus.

WTF. What is going on? What a mess.

While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

--Disease Burden of Influenza | CDC

How many people died from the flu in 2019?
So far, 14,000 people have died and 250,000 people have been hospitalized during the 2019-2020 flu season, according to preliminary estimates from the CDC.

42 of the 60 or so Americans who have contracted the virus as of this morning were on the cruise ship that was quarantined in Japan. That is, the did not contract the virus in the US. That kind of gets us into the 15 range. Others were citizens traveling in Asia, a soldier stationed in South Korea, and so on. If I remember correctly, only one American appears to have contracted the virus here, probably through someone else who had been travelling abroad.

I'm sure the numbers have changed over the course of the day. I haven't been keeping up.

For most of us the important number is how many Americans have contracted the virus here. That kind of defines the risk for most of us who do not travel to high risk areas.

The long incubation period makes this virus especially tricky, as people are known to be contagious before they even develop symptoms.

“The incubation period of the novel COvid-19 coronavirus could be as long as 27 days, noted Reuters citing reports from Chinese provincial government.

In Hubei province, hard-hit by the coronavirus epidemic, an infected 70-year-old man did not exhibit Covid-19 symptoms until 27 days later.

On 24 January, the man had close contact with his infected sister, said Hubei government website. He had a fever on 20 February and received test confirmation the next day.

Currently, the incubation period of the coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, is considered to be 14 days. Health authorities across countries are adopting a 14-day quarantine period, based on the World Health Organization guidelines.

A longer incubation period would impact the efforts focused on controlling the coronavirus spread.

Earlier this month, a study by Chinese researchers found that the incubation period can be up to 24 days. The median incubation period was found to be three days, with a range of zero to 24 days.”

The only thing to blunt that momentum is for Biden to rack up a big win in SC and possibly sway some late deciders in ST states. They need more than one, other than Sanders, to stay in through to the convention. BUT if they all stay in, they may prevent a lot of them from getting the 15 percent threshold. So some do need to drop.

When you talk about things like the disunifying effects of mass immigration or the cultural core of a country being hollowed out, it is difficult for people to relate to because they are abstractions. But the coronavirus response is a perfect example of what these abstractions look like in real life. Societies face collective action problems, and the more societies can work together cooperatively, the more successful they can be. However, in a country as fractured as this one, it is much more difficult to get people to work together cooperatively. And so the government's response to the coronavirus becomes just another partisan issue for people to scream at each other about. If you're a pro-Trump person, you live on Planet A. If you're an anti-Trump person, you live on Planet B. If you happen to live in the middle, you are mostly just shouting in the wind. In other words, America is doomed.

Why is the President lying about the number of momCoronavirus cases, he says there have been only 15 cases, not true, there’s been 60.

Let us consider the possibility that he had received bad or outdated.information from the CDC, shall we? In a country with 336 million residents the difference between 15 and 60 is statistically negligible. If the CDC was staffed with incompetent hacks, perhaps Trump would be justified in double-checking the data they pass up the chain of command, but I think most people would agree that the doctors at the CDC should be presumed to be a cut or two above The norm. Now depending on the retrospective analysis when the crisis has passed, perhaps President Trump will have reason to revise his opinion of the staff at the CDC, but let’s give them a chance to live up to their reputation and earn their pay.

If one starts with the assumption that everything Donald Trump does is wrong, then a dollop of circular reasoning takes you right back to your assumption. But the institute’s name is the Center for Disease Control, and their job is to deal with epidemics and potential epidemics. Let’s let them show the President that they can do their job.

And this disease, like all disease, is now the personal fault of DJT in the same way Romney gave that women cancer...on purpose (according to the dems).

From SFGate:

"New details emerged Thursday about a COVID-19 case in Northern California that's being called the first in the United States with no known connection to travel abroad or another known case.

The female patient, who is a resident of Solano County, first arrived at the NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville on Feb. 15 and spent three days there, according to the Washington Post.

After the patient's condition worsened, she was transported to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento County on Feb. 19, but it wasn't until four days later that the CDC heeded a request to test the patient for coronavirus, according to an email sent to employees Wednesday by the hospital’s interim CEO Brad Simmons and David Lubarsky, CEO of UC Davis Health.

The patient arrived on a ventilator, and special protection orders were issued “because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition,” according to the email.

The hospital asked the CDC to test for the coronavirus, but testing was delayed until Sunday “since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for COVID-19,” the email said.

The CDC confirmed the test was positive on Feb. 26."

Wonder why Iran is setting hit so hard: Applying essential oils to anus ‘cures coronavirus’: Iranian cleric.

A local cleric from the Iranian city of Qom has suggested a novel cure for the new coronavirus - the pre-bedtime rectal administration of violet leaf oil.

Users on Twitter describe how the Ayatollah Tabrizian has publicly denounced Western medicine as "un-Islamic".

In a post to over 120,000 followers on the social messaging service Telegram, Tabrizian, a purveyor of traditional Islam medicine, listed several alternative techniques for fighting the spread of the contagious disease, known as Covid-19.

According to an Iranian news site, which obtained a screenshot of the message, Tabrizian recommends consuming copious amounts of brown sugar, burning wild rue, as well as inhaling snuff.

His eighth tip is the most striking: "Before bedtime, drench some cotton in violet oil and apply onto your anus"

#7. 90026, Echo Park. LA, generic Cali hipsters
#8. 60647, Logan Square, Chicago [yay!], actually no characterization, no data, just "expensive"
#9. 10003, Greenwich Village, NYC, snotty bohemian rich fucks

“SACRAMENTO — The first potential case of coronavirus spread within a U.S. community involves a patient from Solano County in Northern California who has been treated at the University of California, Davis Medical Center for the past week, according to a hospital staff memo.

Solano County is home to Travis Air Force Base, where Americans with possible coronavirus exposure have been flown for quarantine from China and a cruise ship off Japan — but the patient was not known to have close contact with anyone infected with the virus, according to state and federal health officials. Investigators are still trying to trace the origin of the exposure. The county of 441,000 is situated midway between San Francisco and Sacramento.”

"In a two-person race, one or the other is going to get a majority."

Three person races pretty quickly evolve into two person races unless the person in third place actually finishes higher than that at least a couple of voting cycles. This is one of the reasons I don't expect the brokered convention. The only argument against this is that the schedule has become so front-loaded.

My scenarios:

(1) Biden wins a double digit victory on Saturday. On Super Tuesday, Sanders wins 40% of the delegates, Biden wins 30% of the delegates, and the other 30% are split between Bloomberg, Warren, and Buttuvwxyz. The rest of the March primaries Sanders wins 40%, Biden wins 40%, Bloomberg etal win 20%. April primaries, Sanders wins 50%, Biden 30%, Bloomberg etal win 20%. May primaries, Sanders wins 40%, Biden 40%, Bloomberg etal 20%. June, Sanders wins 50%, Biden 40%, Bloomberg etal 10%. Sanders has a strong plurality going into the convention.

(2) Biden wins a close contest on Saturday, less than 5% win. On Super Tuesday, Sanders wins 40% of the delegates, Biden wins 25% of the delegates, and the other 35% are split between Bloomberg, Warren, and Buttuvwxyz. The rest of the March primaries Sanders wins 45%, Biden wins 35%, Bloomberg etal win 20%. April primaries, Sanders wins 50%, Biden 25%, Bloomberg etal win 25%. May primaries, Sanders wins 45%, Biden 30%, Bloomberg etal 25%. June, Sanders wins 55%, Biden 30%, Bloomberg etal 15%. Sanders has a near majority plurality.

Sanders' Presidency will radically alter behavior and have a negative impact on the economy....I won't be booking any cruises or buying any tech stocks in the near future. People need some perspective here on the Coronavirus panic. About 50,000 people die every year in the US from pneumonia. I imagine that in China it is 200-300,000 per year. Even if Coronavirus never appeared, since December, at least 20-30,000 Chinese would have died of pneumonia and pneumonia linked illnesses. As of 3 days ago, the official death toll was 1023 (we can quibble about the reliability of the Chinese number data, but it is what we have in hand). A lot of the alarm is dependent on us trusting the Chinese ability to distinguish COVID-19 cases from all other respiratory ailments with the same symptomatic profile. Given the problems with testing for this virus in the US, I seriously doubt the Chinese have any better ability to firmly distinguish people with COVID-19 from those with very bad case of influenza that has led to pneumonia.

I am not going to panic over this given this dearth of reliable data. I suspect we are vastly overcounting COVID cases because of panic.

Yancey Ward said...

What I am saying is that every single case of pneumonia is being treated by family and patients as a potential case of COVID, and the health authorities are probably only guessing which are which for the most part as they are being overwhelmed by panicked family and friends.

It occurs to me that the this whole corona virus thing is a psyop designed to destabilize pretty much the entire world. Right now China’s leaders look bad but what if it’s all a fake out designed to tank the US economy and get Trump out of office? He has been kicking their asses and has been shutting down the pipelines of propaganda and stolen intellectual property, after all. Four more years of Trump and China will really be hurting.

Of course it could be that they really are this reckless and incompetent...the trucks driving around spraying bleach on everything are a great metaphor for government efficiency in general.

JPS said...

Joan,

"Right now China’s leaders look bad but what if it’s all a fake out designed to tank the US economy and get Trump out of office?"

This requires Italy to play along. Their public health authorities are serious and largely quite competent. The larger government is neither, but is much too fractious and disorganized to play along effectively. Most don't love Trump (though Salvini and his faction are fans), but they aren't pulling for China, and they really don't love taking a hit to their troubled trillion-dollar economy. They still have too much to lose. Some joker would let the cat out of the bag, I promise.

I'm writing from northern Italy. People are concerned but not panicking. Working from home to the extent they can. I know a doctor who was called back from vacation because her hospital had the safeguards in place to receive and isolate coronavirus patients and to properly protect the doctors and nurses handling them.

And yes, the vids of the Chinese trying to do viral decontamination seem to be for show, don't they? Don't worry, citizens, your government has this all under control....

Have already, not will.

@Joan: It has occurred to me previously that China somehow created this health crisis so as to distract from the mess they find them in economically, and to damage the US and wider West. What have they done in the past that would indicate they care about people enough that they wouldn't be willing to sacrifice a few for the greater good of China?

My brain tells me this is a wacky conspiracy theory so I'm going to tuck away in a corner for safe keeping.

Denial is the longest river in the world.

rehajm said...

It will take more than a handful of third-person delegates to deny a majority, unless it is a razor-thin majority.

We don't believe polls anymore but when you look at past results and polling for upcoming primaries there are three and four candidates winning delegates, or two winning and one or two close to the threshold. There's also a four candidates that are polling to win at least one state. There's still the few candidates not reaching the threshold but their votes are being proportioned not to one front runner but two or three. It sets up a post Tuesday where there's little incentive to drop out and no clear frontrunner.

As designed it becomes very difficult for anyone to reach a first ballot win.

There are black swans flying all over the universe. Right now Orion ⍺ looks more like Orion ẟ and has actually changed shape. If this had happened during the time of the Greeks, we would probably have some story handed down to us in the form of a myth, and it might even have appeared in the Bible. If it goes nova, any inhabited planets within many light years, (not us because we are 400 light years away) will be sterilized.

People who think that what they remember is what always will be and events today will always look like what we saw yesterday in our limited lifetimes are in a kind of denial. We just don’t know what coronavirus will bring and I hope it’s nothing, but I will be laying in a supply of beans and rice and canned sardines to last three weeks at least.

I flew on an airplane a week ago, so of course I have the sniffles now. You can’t help worrying. People I know are cancelling flights. This is going to hit the economy. It might end up the kind of national emergency that allows the government to seize control of health care. The way WWII did in the UK, Canada, and Australia.

I’m sorry you didn’t hear it. I DID. Not NBC but here is a mention of the new patient and TravisAFB from yesterday 10;42 PM. Probably where Rush first heard it.

You are so intent on picking a fight you ignored what I said. The original news drop. Minutes after the Presidents news conference ended. (just a coincidence) included the connection to Travis Air Force Base. It was always part of the story.
Subsequent reporting has not included that central tenet of the story. I contend an essential element of the reporting. Why are almost reports deleting this information. Lots of other non essential facts are included. One is intentionally absent.

The motivation is to drive an emotional reaction, and leave people with the feeling the Govt is not doing enough to manage this virus.

This is not the first instance of the coronavirus in the U.S., or even in California, but it is the first time a patient in this country has no clear connection to another sick person.

While I will not attempt to claim it is evident the arrival of a plan load of COVID-19 patients is the connection. To omit the fact that there in fact was
PLANE LOAD OF INFECTED PATIENTS,unloaded in the county is a part of the facts of the reporting

A lot of the alarm is dependent on us trusting the Chinese ability to distinguish COVID-19 cases from all other respiratory ailments with the same symptomatic profile.

A problem with this is using chest CAT scans to diagnose, as was recommended by some radiologist on TV yesterday. The Chinese, I understand, have been doing this but pneumonia on CAT scans looks like pneumonia, no matter the cause. This will massively over diagnose the virus without testing.
