Okay so as Orin Kerr notes in this Tweet, this is nothing but a stone-cold lie from Trump. The vastness of this mendacity might make it hard to understand what a pure, simple lie this is.

Orin Kerr’s Tweet:

https://mobile.twitter.com/OrinKerr/status/1216753065950232576

Orin Kerr is a lawprof at UC Berkeley (like John Yoo). He’s been a law clerk for Justice Kennedy and a legal staffer for Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX). He leans conservative much of the time, is a contributor to the Volokh Conspiracy blog, and he is a founding member of Checks and Balances.

“Two-thirds of Americans surveyed want former national security adviser John Bolton to testify in the Senate impeachment trial, according to a Quinnipiac national poll of 1,562 voters released Monday.

Why it matters: Bolton, who is believed to have been a prolific note-taker with key insights into President Trump's decision-making on Ukraine, said earlier this month that he would be willing to testify if subpoenaed by the Senate. Popular support for Bolton's testimony could put pressure on moderate Republican senators to vote to call him as a witness.

The voters who want Bolton to testify include 39% of Republicans, 71% of independents and 91% of Democrats, per Quinnipiac.”

Perhaps you are more conversant with the medicare for all proposals the Dems are offering than I am but I don't think the details of supplementals, which you would have to buy yourself, have been worked out. Am I wrong on that? Kerr's tweet didn't address that.

Chuck, If you buy your own insurance rather than through an employer they don't have to cover pre-existing conditions under the ACA.

Under the ACA, you have it 100% wrong. The ACA requires it. Marketplace plans offered under the terms of the ACA provide it.

Now, maybe, you know something that I don't, and that in recent years, there have been offerings of private individual plans that don't cover pre-existing conditions. I don't know about that. Some sort of cut-rate plans?

But that is not the question. The questions are: Did the ACA require pre-existing condition coverage? It did. Did the ACHA (Republican House plan from 2017 that went down to bipartisan simple-majority defeat in the Senate) weaken pre-existing condition coverage? Yes, it did pursuant to the MacArthur Amendment. Has Trump proposed any subsequent plan that guarantees pre-existing conditions coverage? No he has not. Has the Trump Administration, via regulatory action, made it easier for states to recognize health insurance plans that do not cover pre-existing conditions? Yes, it has.

I might accept an argument from a Trump Administration official saying that, "We need to get away from the idea of universal pre-existing conditions coverage in private health insurance plans. Because it is just too expensive." That is a highly debatable notion.

But what I won't accept is Trump, lying to the nation and claiming that he is for pre-existing conditions coverage while the Democrats are against it. It's just a plain lie.

….and, if Republicans win in court and take back the House of Represenatives, your healthcare, that I have now brought to the best place in many years, will become the best ever, by far. I will always protect your Pre-Existing Conditions, the Dems will not!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 13, 2020

And so at the sometimes-Trump-apologist National Review, Robert Verbruggen has a very brief but clear-eyed look at the Tweettroversy and concludes out of the gate that, "These Trump tweets have stirred up quite the reaction among lefties. I hate to say it, but the lefties have a point." My only quibble with Mr. Verbruggen is that it clearly is not just "the lefties," but also Trump's increasingly large and vocal critics from conservative circles, who are ripping Trump's recklessness on this subject. Witness the aforementioned Orin Kerr.

The only thing preventing it I can think of is the problem of casting/portraying Miles. Otherwise, it would be perfect for today's market. The Vorkosigan universe is woke, but not offensive about it. Shards of Honor would be a hit. A romantic action adventure with interesting plot twists, great action scenes and a heart. If they weren't tied to their Marvel characters...how about Josh Brolin as Aral and Scarlett Johansson as Cordelia? I suppose Peter Dinkledge would almost have to be Miles.

No, Chuck. The ACA does not mandate that insurers provide right of issue (pre-existing) unless bought through employers or the government subsidies (marketplace). As I stated above. We’re still human and do foolish human things, but if we can realize that we are from the same Source, that one day we’ll be back to the Source, God, Heaven, the hereafter, whatever you want to call it and what transpires here on earth is important only in how much we can learn to love.

seriously my friends if you do not know that college football is a sad thing, where rich kids and sad kids who think they have to be something they do not want to be are manipulated by losers to waste some of their best years of life eating lots and lots to get big and fat to be little gladiators who nobody will care about 12 months from now, seriously my friends if you do not know how sad college football is, well,

just sit down with sackcloth and ashes and read the Bible and hope and pray someday you will be a decent human being

stephen cooper said...

i mean college football is fine if it is West Point or Navy where the players plan to be real officers and real men some day, like I was back in the day, but it breaks my heart to see these rich college coaches exploiting every kid they can to make them big and fat just to win meaningless college games, when those kids could have been doing so much better things with their time.

Saban gets a pass because he won so often, but most of those college coaches are fat loser middle aged men who are exploiting poor kids and encouraging those poor young men to get fat and big and who are giving those poor kids orders and it just makes me angry. They are lucky they did not try and recruit one of my sons.

narciso said...

Whats their alternative, i wager at least sone of these coaches came into the field through this venue.

SC, your theology is pretty far off the beaten path of any known religion . But equating indecency with college football takes it into a realm where no man has gone before.

stephen cooper said...

Their alternative, narciso, is to do what I did.

Find a job where nobody respects you but where you get paid.

There are a few college coaches I admire - the ones who went through West Point or the Academy - but for God's sake what kind of a man decides that what he wants to do in life is boss around poor kids on a football field?

Fuck Paterno, that bastard, and fuck every single college football coach living in his expensive campus house pulling down his big state salary making the poor kids knock themselves out in the summer heat in order to have a chance to win a fucking meaningless game that nobody will care about a few years from now.

That being said, Saban is a good guy, and football at places like the military academies and places like BYU and Notre Dame is ok.

But trust me, you do not want to face God at the end of your life and tell God you were one of the typical college football coaches of our day.

Or don't trust me, I don't care.

stephen cooper said...

etbass --- you make me laugh.

and God bless you for that.

Very touching story, Inga and one where it is easy to believe the Lord used the most odd circumstances for your comfort and blessing.

Inga said...

Indeed, yes. I’m so blessed to have my daughters and sons in law and grandchildren who were hugely supportive. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them. This something I posted to a support group I belong to. Hug your kids, tell them how much they are loved.
———————-
My son, aged 35 while in Maine, April 18, 2019, working as a contractor fell off a floating pier into a 41 degree river with flooding and a fast current. He was seen falling into the river by two co workers and they never saw him come up. Searches were unsuccessful and he was missing for an entire month. We had no body, we couldn’t get a death certificate, without that death certificate we couldn’t even get an obituary published in the paper. We held a memorial service with no body, we were in limbo regarding settling his affairs, all the while trying to wrap our heads around the fact that we’d never see our son and brother again in this lifetime.

He’d be turning 36 on May 17th and in despair I posted a birthday message on his Facebook page with pictures of him at various ages. I ended the post with telling him how much he was loved and how much we miss him and please come home to us. At 8 AM the next morning on his birthday, I got a call from my daughter who had just gotten a call from the Maine authorities, he was found!

A lovely couple who own the flower farm that lies adjacent to the shore of the river he landed on, found him that AM. They had been to that spot the day before and he wasn’t there. They said how unlikely it was that he ended up there as he went upstream instead of downstream and because of the way the river narrowed and channeled off there. They sent beautiful flowers they had just picked with his body when he went to the coroner. What a loving gesture after the shock of finding him. I believe he heard my pleas for him to come home and he did, on his own birthday.

My daughters went to Maine, we had him cremated and they saw where he landed in that beautiful sad place, visited with the couple who found him. The couple planted a flowering crabapple tree in the spot they found him as it blooms every spring around his birthday. My daughters brought home my son in a box supplied by the funeral home. I bought a beautiful urn and he sits on my bookcase, home with me forever.

Sadly the day after Christmas, his elderly cat, who I took care of suddenly became very ill and we had to euthanize him. More heartbreak, I feel like the last remnant of my son on earth is gone, his cars, his tools, his house, his cat. Gone, gone, gone. A good friend of mine reminded me that my connection to my son is eternal, not earthly, that was comforting.

etbass said...

Thanks for the choice, SC. I'll have to opt for not trusting you as I haven't heard anything to make me think you have a unique handle on spiritual matters despite your constant claims.

Apparently, Clemson gives lifetime free tuition to their football players; which is The Least They Should Do.
While you're playing football, you're not taking and Real classes, so at least Clemson actually gives them a scholarship, they can use, later

You know back in the day every kid in Tampa dreamed about playing for the Gators.
It was Gator country - in a boat a mile out the game would be on a radio, lost in camping country there'd be the game on some radio. Back in the mid sixties gators had a middle linebacker went about 150lds, hey i could be a middle linebacker, me and Ray Nietzsche.
Guy down the street, not too big, worked his butt off and was a walk on ended up starting a few games for the Gators. Another guy I played a lot of sandlot with, he walked on ended up all american. Another kid he started practice kicking in jr. high school he ends up kicking for them. None of them were poor kids.

Thanks Narciso, losing a loved one suddenly is a trauma to one’s psyche. The group I belong to has one story after another of sudden deaths of loved ones, sometimes it’s stressful reading these accounts, but it serves to remind us how fragile life is and how much we have in common in our humanity.

It’s my theory that no liberal woman will be elected President until enough time has passed for conservative women to forget how Sarah Palin was treated in 2008. I scarcely know every conservative woman, but I know more than a few and this is what I get from them. Will a dozen years be enough? I think not.

So Bernie is probably right as regards Warren and that Minnesota woman who eats salad with her comb.

I really have to ask. Was there ranch or bleu cheese dressing on that salad? Did Senator Klobuchar later comb her hair and walk around looking like Cameron Diaz in “There’s Something About Mary”?

Took the Tigers awhile to get their stuff together. But I think they are going to show that they are clearly the best in college football this year.

Actually, now that I think about it, the perfect movie for the times would be John Ringo's Live Free or Die. Ryan Reynolds as Tyler Vernon. Release it on July 4th. Cut scene of the trailer is Vernon's speech when the aliens threaten to destroy Washington D.C., followed by a CGI of the strike. I bet it would set records, across the Anglosphere.
