Can anyone explain to me what Nancy Pelosi is doing at about 0.35 of the video posted on Althouse yesterday (https://althouse.blogspot.com/2019/12/just-when-trump-is-calling-democrats.html) when she appears to hold up her arm as if to demonstrate that she is wearing a wristwatch (or an expensive wristwatch, or bracelet or something). It just looks so weird to me that I wonder what she is thinking/doing.

The lines in this photo are interesting, the colors are varied and indicate late fall. The lighting is quite revealing, is it the photo or were there some edits and enhancements? It evokes calmness.

I think that gesture by Nancy Pelosi is just further evidence that she was overcome with emotion in response to a question, somewhat provocative, that she found offensive. The gesture made no sense in the context of the question and the words she was delivering.

As announced today: the current jobs situation is the best in most of our lifetimes.

Cool. I didn't know about Morton Forest.

I learned this year that you can get a Star Gazing Permit for Dane County Parks which allows you to be in the parks "after hours".

stevew said...

And we are left to wonder, what is around that bend in the path?

Ann Althouse said...

"The lighting is quite revealing, is it the photo or were there some edits and enhancements?"

I took the picture because of the striking sunlight on the green (and the long shadows). Using the Apple Photo software, I reduced the highlights to -0.49 and turned the brightness down to -0.42 and made a smaller change to shadows, exposure, contrast, and black point. Basically, just moved things a little. I didn't do anything to the color.

Very good. I often make minor adjustments to photos, usually just to get them to look as I saw the scene.

It's only been around for 3 years. I heard about it just recently, when I happened to be looking up where to hike that's closed to hunting.

The late day winter light is extremely harsh! I had trouble seeing. I had a great view at a high lookout point, but I couldn't figure out how to handle the sun and I'm not posting my failed efforts.

Often the photos straight from the iPhone are different from what I believe I saw. The eye does its own adjustments. With the sunrise photos, the sun can make other things look much darker than they seemed to the naked eye (which was always trying not to look right at the sun).

The Democrats used the NSA to get the phone records of private citizens and released those communications to the public.

Did they have a warrant?

What probable cause did they have ?

Years ago we took in a Pissarro exhibit at the Boston MFA. It featured his works and letters and other notes and correspondence. I recall that in one letter he describes being taught to go out to a countryside setting and paint the scene. Then, he is told, that when he returns, perhaps the next day, he should paint the scene from memory. He explained that doing this makes the painting of the scene uniquely his.

I think the bracelet on Pelosi's right wrist must be for some cause or other that proves what a kind and loving person she really is.

The eye has a very non-linear response to brightness. I believe it's logarithmic.

Oh, how I wish that landscape looked like mine about now.

Dec. 1, pre-dawn, we got a good layer of freezing rain. Come dawn, snow. Heavy, wet snow, all day. 4+ inches. Then it froze. The big pines have branches on the ground that should be 15' in the air. One, laying over my service line. Can't knock the snow off-frozen to the needles.

A little sun would help, but maybe 5 minutes of sun all week, at 30 second intervals.

Temps toy with the freezing mark, but never quite get there.

Everything is still locked in ice. Can't get the tarp off my wood pile to cut more firewood, can't put up my Christmas lights.

On the bright side, everywhere you look looks like an Ansel Adams.

h said...

Thousand miles away from Madison, I arise before dawn to walk my dog. The morning light on my street is beautiful and I always think, "Am I alone in seeing this beautiful sky (horizon)?" It's not just the horizon (sunrise/sunset); the quality of light is different and better at dawn/dusk. And it's a short time (15 minutes or so) to appreciate this quality of light.

AA: "With the sunrise photos, the sun can make other things look much darker than they seemed to the naked eye (which was always trying not to look right at the sun)."

You're right. As Original Mike said, the eye has a log response, and a much wider subject brightness (dynamic) range than a digital sensor. Our subjective view is built up from brief glances ("saccades") as the eye unconsciously scans the scene. It automatically adjusts when it moves from bright to darker areas, but what we see (remember) is the optimized sum of all of micro-views. Naturally the auto exposure system of a camera, lacking the postprocessing of the human eye, tries to split the difference so that the highlights don't blow out.

This is one of the reasons why we sometimes need to tinker lightly with our photographic images.

Your light tinkering is very pleasing in this case. Well done.

A: I usually don’t comment on your photos, because I think that you have different interests in what you are capturing than I generally do, I think that I might be focusing on creating a kind of illusion, when you seem to care more about capturing the reality of the moment, but I really like this one.

B: "Often the photos straight from the iPhone are different from what I believe I saw.”

The camera does an automatic white balance that is the engineers' best guess of what you are seeing based on lighting conditions. Your recollection is probably better, and there is nothing magical about the image as it is put out by the software in your camera. When I used to be somewhat serious about photography, I would make little notes of why I took the picture, about color, and use them when post processing. Also there are color charts and you can take your picture with and without the color chart, which will have an area of pure white in it, and then use the card as a reference for post processing.

Other issues of. course are that the sensors in the camera pick up millions of colors, but not all of them, and the screen on your computer can display millions of colors, but not the exact colors that the camera captures, so everything is a compromise, and human judgement can’t really be taken out of it, if you are really trying to convey what you saw. So fiddling with the controls is not cheating in any sense of the term.

Ansel Adams said that "the negative is the score and the print is the performance," it applies to digital too.

CNN ratings were lowest in three years over Thanksgiving week.

Meanwhile, Trump's approval jumped to 52% in latest Rasmussen poll. This includes 31% with African Americans, more than double the percentage who voted for him in 2016. Approval among Hispanics has been over 50% in three recent polls.

Democrats are toast in 2020.

Yes, but we know that terrorism won't be allowed to get in the way of impeachment proceedings.

The New York Times reported that six other Saudi nationals “were detained for questioning near the scene of the shooting, including three who were seen filming the entire incident.”

BTW, apparently three of the 9/11 hijackers had the Pensacola Naval Air Base as their address.

Clutching vipers to our bosom. This has to stop. Saudi Arabia is not our friend.

mockturtle said...

Browndog, I'm not sure they've been dormant. Following foreign news sources I see that many terrorist plots have been detected and thwarted, not just abroad but here in the US. Our MSM would prefer we didn't know about them, of course. But if they're actually implemented then they have no choice.

The entity known as "Morton Forest" came into existence when the person named Morton donated land to Dane County and Dane County developed a county park that was named in honor of the donor. At that point, what had been private land became a place of interest to people in the area.
