"Technically speaking, ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic, meaning that it numbs your body and makes you feel apart from your environment — like you’re watching your own life happen..."

"... instead of living it. But that doesn’t begin to capture the weirdness of what it feels like to get high on K. As one friend put it to me: 'It’s like walking from your kitchen to your living room, and from your living room to your kitchen, and it’s uphill both ways, but you’ve never had so much fun walking up a hill.' It’s true that K can make both you and the world feel tilted — as if you’re walking on an underwater treadmill pitched at a 45-degree incline. Thought-trains jump their tracks, anxieties float off like helium balloons, and everything becomes silly and warped, like filming a movie through a camera with a fish-eye lens.... [K]etamine puts life on airplane mode. 'Phones aren’t really a thing when you’re on K... You’re creating an internal world. You’re not trying to reach out or engage with anyone but yourself and who you’re with.'... 'Everyone I knew was gone, but for some reason I was very complacent. I was just a ball of energy in a galaxy far far away, and from there I was kind of watching worlds and societies form in fast motion... Apparently I just said I’m out, good night, the world doesn’t exist, good-bye family.'... 'My theory is that ketamine is a response to the overabundance of information and the disengagement a lot of people have from the millennial job market, and now Trump, and seeing the world burn before our eyes'..."

From "A Party Drug for the End of the World" (title on the front page, inside it's "Leave Your Body at the Door How ketamine became the drug of choice for our dissociated moment") (New York Magazine).

Ketamine was originally a veterinarian anesthetic. Then it was used on humans when I was in training. Patients under its influence were subjected to bad hallucinations if startled or disturbed so its use in medicine was eventually dropped.

I guess it is now an analog to LSD.

I'm mostly familiar with ketamine by way of learning that "Desmond is Amazing," the now-12-year-old so called drag queen, is familiar with it, by way of Michael Alig apparently.

This shit is honestly too disturbing to hotlink, but you can google it yourself if you want.

The only time I took ketamine was in London 20 years ago at a party, and I not only lost track of where and who I was, I was unable to stand up or move around. Never again. All night after I sort of recovered, I could spot the other people at the party who had done K by the utterly blank wrecked look on their faces.

and now Trump

It's so weird. In bubble land, Trump has done so many bad things. I mean, you can't actually point to any of these bad things, but they're just assumed to be there.

Well, yours anyway.

Perhaps one result of our modern, enlightened sensibility that tells us death means obliteration and there is nothing to look forward to is the notion that you'd better try to experience everything there is to experience before you die, or you'll have tragically missed out.

It isn't really clear why it will matter that you missed out, since you won't exist to feel any regret about it.

I believe the term is 'K-hole'.

From the outsider's point of view, the ketamine user is a guy slumped on a couch drooling on himself.

That's just fine. Let them stay disengaged from reality so the rest of us can help preserve it.

I suspect these are the same Media guys writing this week's latest narrative that Trump supporters are mentally ill retards trapped in a cult. Actually we are the ones being sober realists while the bubble of fantasists using brain altering drugs croaks out the latest lies like frogs croaking all the night.

Ketamine Sun

I was right but now I'm wrong
I loved you now and now you're gone
I was a goddamn fool, you taught me that
But I look out at

K-K-Ketamine Sun x 6

Life is like a holy war
Destroyed my life and the ties that bind
Take it - my world's destroyed
Take it

K-K-Ketamine Sun x 6

Behind the clouds
For me
Like I did
Cos I'm

K-K-Ketamine Sun

I remember Orudis KT as an OTC medication... then they discontinued the OTC version.

Sigh. Back to ibuprofen and Aleve... until I got put on meloxicam - and coupled with Flexeril I could drop ibuprofen and sleep even better.

Weird dreams, though.

I think I've read that it is safer to use on kids,

Back in the day, the Recovery Room beds had signs "Ketamine. No noise or disturbance,"

These idiots are just adding unnecessary work to already overloaded EMS systems as well as being an utter drain on society. The fact that any effort to write an article about these dregs shows how dim and insipid New York culture truly is.

Its gotten to the point where our Power elite will soon be handing out Free MJ and LSD/Heroin with the welfare/unemployment checks. Keep 25% of the population drugged up and voting Democrat and they can do what they wish.

The only time I had ketamine was as a general anesthetic for several major surgeries I underwent. I would play a game to see how long I could resist as they injected it into my IV. Answer: not long.

I thought to myself - why don't these kids put reality on their bucket list as a "must visit before I die." Then I noticed one of the keyword phrases for this blog entry was "these kids today." Oh well. But still, I think a real education today would include a course called Pipe Wrench 101 which would start by showing how to fix a faucet without flooding the house. And then, gently moving on, it would show people that similarly or analogously (poetic word. Obsolete) to shutting off the water, they can also turn off their phones (in class with a teacher to guide them safely through the disorientation). Then, finally how to turn off the digital flow without drugs - an impartial guide to methods: from manual shutdown for specified amounts of time to the basics of changing channels to the more risky strategies of remembering what you've heard, questioning what you hear, reading great literature, studying history and even, for the adventurous, introductions to hidden Trump supporters and faithers (trad God believers) for a field exercise in listening to those whom you know are wrong-thoughters (but can you answer their arguments?).

Yes, it can used for that purpose and has been. I tried it when I was post-doc- not a pleasant, non-threatening experience like LSD was for me. The thing I remember most was a deep sense of helplessness.

Yet Another example of how Brave New World is a far better instruction manual than 1984

if you have plenty of Soma for the Gammas and Deltas, the Alphas can concentrate on making a better world for us all

Worse than the consciousness of helplessness is a loss of the sense that it even matters.

These American millennials live in the most affluent society in the world, have endless opportunity yet wallow in self-pity because "Trump is destroying the world'. How exactly is he destroying it, and has it occurred to you to go out and do something useful. I notice this Ketamine is a drug that takes the user internal, not a social drug, but each on their own isolated trip. No wonder they are depressed, they go to parties to be alone.

Frighteningly true. In the last couple of years I've had a nephew and a SIL experience life-threatening illnesses. In both instances, they weren't able to be admitted as in-patients at their local hospitals because the beds were filled with druggies. Victimless crime, my ass.

Much literature on its use in treating chronic depression.

Same has been said recently of LSD and MDMA(Ecstasy)

daskol said...

Ketamine for treating treatment resistant depression is way ahead of LSD/MDMA in terms of demonstrated therapeutic benefit. I always found it strange that it took off in the rave scene in the 90s as it does not seem like the kind of drug you want to do around flashing lights and pulsing techno, let alone hundreds of strangers. I've known people who wake up from their ketamine experiences with significant bruising and no idea how--the anesthetic properties are potent. I'm surprised to read of people here who had scary or otherwise negative experiences on it.

daskol said...

I had a friend who was a medic in a foreign army, and ketamine was in his kit as the go to drug to administer to people wounded on the battlefield, long after we'd stopped using it on people in the US.

The reason you’re wrong is the whole point, and you’re probably a wrinkly, so grouchy about this stuff. If ayahuasca wasn’t so low-dosage California popular I’d recommend that, unless you can persuade you to hammer you hard repeatedly. As it is, maybe try Iboga in Libreville, Gabon.

Death is far more understandable and acceptable with a little insight from otherwise marginally active grey matter. For everybody. Never too late to start.

Normally, Trump would've simply been some rich NY asshole who became President. Big whoop. But thanks to the media's epic crying jag, all you have to say is "in times like these, a good apple cobbler blah blah or "in these times, spa vacations are blah blah" and everybody knows who, not what, you mean. The media's behaved like Khan implanting Ceti eels in our collective ears.

"Boomer Sooner" is the fight song for the University of Oklahoma (OU). The lyrics were written in 1905 by Arthur M. Alden, an OU student and son of a local jeweler in Norman. The tune is taken from "Boola Boola", the fight song of Yale University (which was itself borrowed from an 1898 song called "La Hoola Boola" by Robert Allen (Bob) Cole and Billy Johnson).[1] A year later, an additional section was appended, borrowed from the University of North Carolina's "I'm a Tar Heel Born".[2][3][4]
