"... and the possibility of change. That it became not an item of clothing but a placeholder in a continuum that began with the suffragists, continued through Geraldine Ferraro, and resonated today. That it sparked mountains of text and tweets and entire Facebook groups dedicated to celebrating its meaning and urging adoption — and then designating it the outfit of the opposition. That Hillary Clinton made it a cause célèbre, #WearWhiteToVote made it a hashtag, Melania Trump made it a pointed subject of speculation, and the women of the 116th Congress made it a gauntlet."
But then along came Tulsi, and "Tulsi Gabbard’s White Pantsuit Isn’t Winning" — according to Vanessa Friedman in the NYT. Elizabeth Warren isn't doing the white pantsuit. Amy Klobuchar isn't doing the white pantsuit. Kamala Harris isn't doing the white pantsuit. Only Tulsi. And she's not doing it right. She's worn a white pantsuit in 3 debates. Oh! She persisted!
What is Friedman's problem with Tulsi in white? Well, Friedman doesn't admit that she has a problem with Tulsi in white. She's gesturing at the existence of opinion out there: "reaction has been muted at best." Is that even anything? The absence of getting as excited about Tulsi in white as people got about Hillary Clinton in white... but was that even ever real excitement? Wasn't that fake? And no one's criticizing Tulsi, are they?
Assuming there's some kind of problem here, Friedman speculates that it might be abou Gabbard's squabbling with Hillary Clinton (Clinton called her a Russian asset and Gabbard called Clinton "queen of the warmongers") or the fact that there are other women on the stage, but it's most likely because Gabbard's white is not the white of the suffragists but "the white of avenging angels and flaming swords, of somewhat combative righteousness (also cult leaders)." That is, per Friedman, she's not about "community building" she's about setting herself apart and appealing to "the fringe, rather than the center."
To me, the white suit — on any candidate — is a problem. It's too bright, drawing attention away from the face. It makes you look as though you're not ready for hard work, only for show. And I suspect that most women feel that they couldn't wear an all white suit because it's unflattering. It's just not realistic. Maybe that's the point, trying to look like the embodiment of ideals. But that's not what we need in a President.
But what about the white suit on Tulsi in particular? Is it a problem because the white suit has important, recent, special meaning and she's not doing that meaning? Can't she just pick whatever color she wants? Sometimes white is just a color?

I saw this and was hoping you would see it too!
Arbiters of taste and fashion can take a flying roger at a rolling donut.
From Stephen Sondheim we have this advice given to a young wife on how to combat an older rival for her husband's affections:
Wear you hair down, and a flower
Don't wear makeup, dress in white
She'll grow older by the hour
And be hopelessly shattered by Saturday night
She seems as triggering as the huntress, wven gabbard shares most of their beliefs.
Tulsi is a happy warrior. No funeral clothes, like the rest of the losers are wearing, for her.
It won't be long before Tulsi is seen as a threat to Nikki Haley for becoming the first female to win the Presidency.
In photos I've seen of Tulsi's white suit it appears to be poorly tailored. She has a great figure and spoils it by wearing badly-fitted clothing. But I don't give a rat's ass what she is wearing but am more concerned with her ideas. And she has a lovely speaking voice that, unlike most of her rivals, won't peel the paint off the walls.
Gabbard & Yang 2024.
A white suit is a women's' power thing? Who knew?
Whatever... Tulsi always looks great, white suit or not, and always looks and acts powerful. She doesn't need such gimmickry.
She would not be a good President but - man - is she good looking!
White pant suit - looks great on the First Lady. Tulsi looks good too. It achieves the objective, she stands out on stage. Everyone else is dressed in dark colors, and then there's Tulsi. Agree, its a hard look to pull off. You can't be fat, and you can't have a bad shape. Its like wearing red.
I distinctly recall Melania Trump being accused of white supremacy for wearing a white outfit.
It's only a symbol of empowerment or whatever when worn by a Democrat. Which reinforces Tulsi's standing as a dishonorary Republican.
Can't she just pick whatever color she wants? Sometimes white is just a color?
Sure, but of course every little thing these candidates do is calculated. So obviously it's not like she grabbed an outfit at random without any consideration. Her choice of white is deliberate, there's intention behind it.
In western culture white often signifies purity and innocence. But it can also signify emptiness, cold, sterility (like a hospital), or isolation.
Add a disco ball, strike a pose, and get boogie fever.
Or add sparkles and a wide collar and get Elvis.
What is Friedman's problem with Tulsi in white?
Jealousy.
Most men and women do not look good in a white suit. Tulsi can pull if off.
I recall similar criticism of Reagan for wearing a brown suit. That was not done in business and political circles. Ronnie pulled it off.
Aside: 40+ years ago, one of my grad school professors applied for a job at an advertising agency, but didn't get it. He blamed his suit and advised me to never wear a brown suit to an interview. I already knew that.
Shes for the iran deal, she can see no wrong in putin, shes for the green nude eel, but not full moloch and allows some leeway on guns.
I ain't gonna vote for her 'cos she's wearing white.
(question mark?)
From the post:
"Sometimes white is just a color?"
It's all the colors, all at once. It's a blended rainbow.
earth check people!
THIS is what you want women wearing for politics; Short Skirt / Long Jacket"
just like the song said
Tulsi has legs.... She should know how to use them
That Friedman literally wrote the article that praised Clinton's white suit, this one just makes her look like a total cretin.
I'll get excited about color in a female politician's clothing only when it is orange---with black letters on the back indicating that she's in a penal institution. Well I am thinking about Hillary, but the list is not exclusive and others could join. In Hillary's case, I hope Martha Stewart left a recipe for chocolate chip cookies in the prison kitchen. Occupational therapy and all that, you know.
Not saying I would support a Gabbard-Yang ticket in 2024, just saying they should be the Dem nominees. They would get my support over some idiot neocon GOP ticket, though.
I'll be cynical and imagine that Tulsi is using her white pant suit merely to emphasize her WOC credentials.
Insanity, on it's face. That aside, there's the bizarre notion that Gabbard wearing an item of clothing is somehow the same as Hillary wearing the same type of thing. Er, no.
Here's the brass-tacs.
Tulsi is pretty. Therefore to be hated by other women. Period.
This is an ugly/old vs. young/pretty psychosexual thing. Whatever you think jealousy is, when it involves women - multiply.
"Rather, they are the white of avenging angels and flaming swords, of somewhat combative righteousness (also cult leaders). And that kind of association, though it can be weirdly compelling, is also not really community building. It sets someone apart, rather than joining others together. It has connotations of the fringe, rather than the center."
I laugh at stuff like this, but I grant that mastering the craft of writing for an audience of people who have been educated beyond their intelligence, week in, week out, may be a lot harder than it looks.
It's like wearing white to your second wedding.
It's not Tulsi in white, or Tulsi in brown, or Tulsi in any color. It's Tulsi; the young, attractive, athletic, US Army vet that they despise. She's the odd man out in DC; the town often described as Hollywood for ugly people.
"To me, the white suit — on any candidate — is a problem."
The etymology of "candidate" is from the Latin for "made bright" because Roman office seekers wore bright white togas.
This is an ugly/old vs. young/pretty psychosexual thing. Whatever you think jealousy is, when it involves women - multiply.
Well, Lucid, I'm an old [straight] woman and I find Tulsi both intelligent and beautiful. I also find our First Lady lovely and admire her very much. Don't paint us all with the jealousy brush, please.
I really don't care what they are wearing.
Tulsi is on the left but she doesn't fear the Clintons. Impeachable offense.
*hiccup*
I don't always buy into the "focus is on women voters" theory. But, yikes!
The same women who shouldn't wear white because it's not a flattering color for them also shouldn't wear black. Black "disappears" them. Yet somehow most women think wearing black is universally flattering. Tulsi looks great in both. Hillary looks good in neither one. Neither does Warren. Michelle Obama would look good in them, and yet she chooses yellow. Go figure.
Lady candidates need to stick to Dr Evil smocks, to pay homage to Hillary. And also the suffragettes, of course!
Tulsi has legs.... She should know how to use them
Yep.
Obsessive over-analysis of trivia.
In the Seventies a woman wearing a white suit only needed Visible Panty Line to seal the deal.
I am Laslo.
Putin loves his trim in white pantsuits
Wearing white after Labor Day? Good lord, what have we become! They're probably upset because her ass doesn't look big in white.
Seriously, she is being accused of (political) cultural appropriation: she isn't allowed into the White Wearing Liberal Women's club, because she's a Russian asset and non-Hillary Ass kisser. Or so it seems.
At the bottom of the article is the tag line A brief history of the white pantsuit in politics, and links to 3 earlier articles of hers in 2018 and 2019. Seems she felt obliged to write something given Gabbard's repeated choice.
Call me deplorable, but Tulsi Gabbard makes me think of this
This story was planted by the Gabbard campaign as cunning reverse psychology. It encourages male voters to imagine Tulsi not wearing her pant-suit. That's worth 40 points easy.
Odd that Democratic candidates are zooming to top or plunging to the depths before a single primary vote is cast or caucus held based only on the media's "who's hot, who's not" criteria.
Simply- white made her physically stand out in the crowd of otherwise blueish people. Kamala used a southern accent to stand out. A fake southern accent always plays big in the South. (we're still laughing at clips of Hillary doing it.) Bernie Sanders used Nutragena to make his forehead shiny and smooth. Uncle Joe neatly ordered his hair plugs. Little Petey got large smile tips from Howdy Doody. And Elizabeth. Well...Elizabeth just can't stand out in any way except for her looniness which, really, is among the most pure looney we've seen in a long time.
Did I forget anybody? Oh yeah, Corey Booker. He should have worn white. I would have remembered him.
And Vanessa Friedman? Never heard of her.
I think Tulsi wears a white pantsuit because she looks good in it. It draws attention to the white streak in her hair.
Ahem

I thought that because of her coloration, the white looked nice.
Sounds like the news editor wanted a gal to cover the Women's Angle.
"I'm on it, chief."
The more things change...
When I think of someone in a white suit, I think of Steve Martin doing standup 40 years ago.
And Tulsi can Take Me Back to Tulsa anytime she wants.
Only a dullard wouldn't recognize that the Tulsi's white pantsuit is a racist dog-whistle.
AS is usual with these kinds of articles, they say nothing about the subject but speak volumes about the author, none of it good.
Put any color on Hillary Clinton and you get more statement than with the same color on Tulsi Gabbard.
A favorite lyric on white by Melanie Safka:
I don't eat white flour
White sugar makes you rot
Oh, white can be beautiful
But mostly it's not.
Oh, we're back to the white pantsuits, again? Our media is so laughably transparent. Who else remembers how Hillary's white pantsuit at the DNC convention was "presidential" while Melania's white pantsuit at the RNC convention was "a scary statement"? Those were headlines BY THE SAME WRITER FOR THE SAME PUBLICATION. I don't know how to do links but here it is:

Anybody who thinks the media doesn't hate you and doesn't think you're stupid is a brainless simpleton.
Last male politico I recall wearing white was Harry Truman.
This is the most interesting topic about the D's last Debate. Which tells you a lot. And please, can we stop with Tulsi worship? Damn, the Center-Right is embarrassing. Have a female POC throw them a few crumbs and they're shouting for her to be President. So what if she's a quasi-socialist Democrat on domestic policy, she's cute, brown, and a vet. Pathetic.
The white suit seems to have gone out with IKE. Of course, you rarely saw Ike in white except on the golf course.
The problem with white is that it rhymes with uptight, especially when worn by women.
I recall Ernest Angley wore a white suit, too.
she's the only one that has a pulse, I pointed out some of the objections, about her, bobblehead amy, wannabe olivia pope, kamala harris,
I'd suggest she pull a Vindman and go around in her uniform, but apparently it is a violation of military ethics for her to do that since it might look like an endorsement by the War Department.
Anyhow, white is a challenging colour. Closest I ever come is a light beige, which is still a lot more forgiving when it comes to the occasional dust or dirt. My dress shirts are mostly white, though, and I carry around one of those little dry-clean pens to deal with stains.
Howard shows his respect for the fairer sex.
White pantsuits look great on women with darker complexion's. If you look at a white pant suit on someone like an Iman or a Grace Jones, it is quite a good look. Hell, even Leslie Jones, someone I do not find attractive in the least, managed to pull off a pretty good Grace Jones homage.
That said, I do agree with mockturtle above that Gabbard's biggest problem is fit and tailoring.
So what if she's a quasi-socialist Democrat on domestic policy, she's cute, brown, and a vet. Pathetic.
Every single person running in the 2020 election, up to and including the incumbent, is a "quasi-socialist."
even a drab outfit looks good,

Also rhymes with outasight.
“Sometimes white is just a color?"
And sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But this was calculated to stand out.
Tom Wolfe wore white suits for the same reason I suspect.
Howard said...

Howard is just upset because Titus hasn't bragged about doing him yet.
"I thought that because of her coloration, the white looked nice."
Exactly. The pale people are jealous. Especially the Gingers like Friedman. And others.
It's flattering on Tulsi.
Sometimes white is just a color?
It's OK to be white.
I thought it was sexist to discuss a female politician's wardrobe. Why is the sexist NYT publish such sexist commentary from such a sexist columnist? And you, Ann, a law professor!
Tom Wolfe wore white suits for the same reason I suspect.
There is a reason he stated but I'm too lazy to look it up.
Maybe Tulsi just doesn't have the right stuff.
"When I think of someone in a white suit, I think of Steve Martin doing standup 40 years ago."
Yes, and Tom Wolfe and John Lennon on the cover of "Abbey Road."
Maybe one of the men should wear a white suit. Tom Steyer?
When Margaret Hoover interviewed Tulsi for Firing Line, they each wore black pants.
Sure, you're going for that John Lennon and Tom Wolfe vibe, but what if you wind up with David Byrne
KenB, you do know that the bikini picture you linked to is not Tulsi Gabbard, don't you?
Highlights her bravery, especially as the only non-postmenopausal Dem candidate.
(Oh, I'm gonna hear it for that one.)
Tulsi is a service member.
She's a combat veteran.
She can wear any damn thing she wants!
Maybe one of the men should wear a white suit. Tom Steyer?
I associate Tom Steyer with Men in White Jackets.
"To me, the white suit ...makes you look as though you're not ready for hard work, only for show."
Like the Tom Cruise character's 'girly white uniform" in A Few Good Men?
Tcrosse sez: I associate Tom Steyer with Men in White Jackets.
Yep.
"Like the Tom Cruise character's 'girly white uniform" in A Few Good Men?"
I've never seen A Few Good Men.
I've never seen Top Gun either.
I've read the white pantsuit makes the wearer look like a cult leader - that's timely. And, since Tulsi IS in a cult, revealing.
Hillary, of course, had a bunch of psychics (including Marianne Williamson) to the White House after Bill was busted with Monica - again, revealing: Women - especially women of Hillary's caliber - running to the totally illogical when they're vulnerable. And nobody batting an eye about it - super-revealing.
Then there's Hillary's dress when she's not campaigning: Does anyone else notice or comment on her extreme, and distinctly hippie, vibe when she's not trying to play the professional? What does THAT mean about who the left is desparate to have in office?
Is it the consummate professional or the NewAge witch?
I know what I think, based on the evidence,...
To me the interesting thing is that Tulsi is hot, and nobody on the Democrat side seems to notice or care.
Meanwhile, Republicans went crazy for Sarah Palin.
I have a (tentative) opinion that Republicans are comfortable with sexually-attractive candidates, maybe even inspired by them. While Democrats seem to repress sexual desire in any sort of public setting. That's why you have straight Democrat men who are "inspired" by the gay guy but find Tulsi "problematic."
Democrats insist that sexuality is irrelevant to how we vote. (And of course this is the party who thinks there is a constitutional right to kill unborn babies, and to change the genders of your children).
Anyway, it doesn't surprise me at all that leftist women dislike Tulsi. Of course they do. She's young and hot and your boyfriend is probably voting for her in secret.
What would the Trump insult for Tulsi be?
That's a hard one.
Surfer Babe? I think I would go with Surfer Babe. And that's not much of an insult.
They will never nominate Tulsi but she would be a tough opponent, I think.
