"It was only a mere presidential election cycle ago, after all, that the white suit was thrust into the limelight as a symbol of so much: women’s advancement and opportunity..."

"... and the possibility of change. That it became not an item of clothing but a placeholder in a continuum that began with the suffragists, continued through Geraldine Ferraro, and resonated today. That it sparked mountains of text and tweets and entire Facebook groups dedicated to celebrating its meaning and urging adoption — and then designating it the outfit of the opposition. That Hillary Clinton made it a cause célèbre, #WearWhiteToVote made it a hashtag, Melania Trump made it a pointed subject of speculation, and the women of the 116th Congress made it a gauntlet."

But then along came Tulsi, and "Tulsi Gabbard’s White Pantsuit Isn’t Winning" — according to Vanessa Friedman in the NYT. Elizabeth Warren isn't doing the white pantsuit. Amy Klobuchar isn't doing the white pantsuit. Kamala Harris isn't doing the white pantsuit. Only Tulsi. And she's not doing it right. She's worn a white pantsuit in 3 debates. Oh! She persisted!

What is Friedman's problem with Tulsi in white? Well, Friedman doesn't admit that she has a problem with Tulsi in white. She's gesturing at the existence of opinion out there: "reaction has been muted at best." Is that even anything? The absence of getting as excited about Tulsi in white as people got about Hillary Clinton in white... but was that even ever real excitement? Wasn't that fake? And no one's criticizing Tulsi, are they?

Assuming there's some kind of problem here, Friedman speculates that it might be abou Gabbard's squabbling with Hillary Clinton (Clinton called her a Russian asset and Gabbard called Clinton "queen of the warmongers") or the fact that there are other women on the stage, but it's most likely because Gabbard's white is not the white of the suffragists but "the white of avenging angels and flaming swords, of somewhat combative righteousness (also cult leaders)." That is, per Friedman, she's not about "community building" she's about setting herself apart and appealing to "the fringe, rather than the center."

To me, the white suit — on any candidate — is a problem. It's too bright, drawing attention away from the face. It makes you look as though you're not ready for hard work, only for show. And I suspect that most women feel that they couldn't wear an all white suit because it's unflattering. It's just not realistic. Maybe that's the point, trying to look like the embodiment of ideals. But that's not what we need in a President.

But what about the white suit on Tulsi in particular? Is it a problem because the white suit has important, recent, special meaning and she's not doing that meaning? Can't she just pick whatever color she wants? Sometimes white is just a color?

From Stephen Sondheim we have this advice given to a young wife on how to combat an older rival for her husband's affections:

Wear you hair down, and a flower
Don't wear makeup, dress in white
She'll grow older by the hour
And be hopelessly shattered by Saturday night

Tulsi is a happy warrior. No funeral clothes, like the rest of the losers are wearing, for her.

It won't be long before Tulsi is seen as a threat to Nikki Haley for becoming the first female to win the Presidency.

In photos I've seen of Tulsi's white suit it appears to be poorly tailored. She has a great figure and spoils it by wearing badly-fitted clothing. But I don't give a rat's ass what she is wearing but am more concerned with her ideas. And she has a lovely speaking voice that, unlike most of her rivals, won't peel the paint off the walls.

A white suit is a women's' power thing? Who knew?

Whatever... Tulsi always looks great, white suit or not, and always looks and acts powerful. She doesn't need such gimmickry.

She would not be a good President but - man - is she good looking!

White pant suit - looks great on the First Lady. Tulsi looks good too. It achieves the objective, she stands out on stage. Everyone else is dressed in dark colors, and then there's Tulsi. Agree, its a hard look to pull off. You can't be fat, and you can't have a bad shape. Its like wearing red.

I distinctly recall Melania Trump being accused of white supremacy for wearing a white outfit.

It's only a symbol of empowerment or whatever when worn by a Democrat. Which reinforces Tulsi's standing as a dishonorary Republican.

Sure, but of course every little thing these candidates do is calculated. So obviously it's not like she grabbed an outfit at random without any consideration. Her choice of white is deliberate, there's intention behind it.

In western culture white often signifies purity and innocence. But it can also signify emptiness, cold, sterility (like a hospital), or isolation.

What is Friedman's problem with Tulsi in white?

Jealousy.

Most men and women do not look good in a white suit. Tulsi can pull if off.

I recall similar criticism of Reagan for wearing a brown suit. That was not done in business and political circles. Ronnie pulled it off.

Aside: 40+ years ago, one of my grad school professors applied for a job at an advertising agency, but didn't get it. He blamed his suit and advised me to never wear a brown suit to an interview. I already knew that.

I'll get excited about color in a female politician's clothing only when it is orange---with black letters on the back indicating that she's in a penal institution. I laugh at stuff like this, but I grant that mastering the craft of writing for an audience of people who have been educated beyond their intelligence, week in, week out, may be a lot harder than it looks.

It's not Tulsi in white, or Tulsi in brown, or Tulsi in any color. It's Tulsi; the young, attractive, athletic, US Army vet that they despise. She's the odd man out in DC; the town often described as Hollywood for ugly people.

"To me, the white suit — on any candidate — is a problem."

The etymology of "candidate" is from the Latin for "made bright" because Roman office seekers wore bright white togas.

Well, Lucid, I'm an old [straight] woman and I find Tulsi both intelligent and beautiful. I also find our First Lady lovely and admire her very much. Don't paint us all with the jealousy brush, please.

The same women who shouldn't wear white because it's not a flattering color for them also shouldn't wear black. Black "disappears" them. Yet somehow most women think wearing black is universally flattering. Tulsi looks great in both. Hillary looks good in neither one. Neither does Warren. Michelle Obama would look good in them, and yet she chooses yellow. Go figure.

Simply- white made her physically stand out in the crowd of otherwise blueish people. Kamala used a southern accent to stand out. A fake southern accent always plays big in the South. (we're still laughing at clips of Hillary doing it.) Bernie Sanders used Nutragena to make his forehead shiny and smooth. Uncle Joe neatly ordered his hair plugs. Little Petey got large smile tips from Howdy Doody. And Elizabeth. Well...Elizabeth just can't stand out in any way except for her looniness which, really, is among the most pure looney we've seen in a long time.

Did I forget anybody? Oh yeah, Corey Booker. He should have worn white. I would have remembered him.

And Vanessa Friedman? Never heard of her.

I've read the white pantsuit makes the wearer look like a cult leader - that's timely. And, since Tulsi IS in a cult, revealing.

Hillary, of course, had a bunch of psychics (including Marianne Williamson) to the White House after Bill was busted with Monica - again, revealing: Women - especially women of Hillary's caliber - running to the totally illogical when they're vulnerable. And nobody batting an eye about it - super-revealing.

Then there's Hillary's dress when she's not campaigning: Does anyone else notice or comment on her extreme, and distinctly hippie, vibe when she's not trying to play the professional? What does THAT mean about who the left is desparate to have in office?

Is it the consummate professional or the NewAge witch?

I know what I think, based on the evidence,...

To me the interesting thing is that Tulsi is hot, and nobody on the Democrat side seems to notice or care.

Meanwhile, Republicans went crazy for Sarah Palin.

I have a (tentative) opinion that Republicans are comfortable with sexually-attractive candidates, maybe even inspired by them. While Democrats seem to repress sexual desire in any sort of public setting. That's why you have straight Democrat men who are "inspired" by the gay guy but find Tulsi "problematic."

Democrats insist that sexuality is irrelevant to how we vote. (And of course this is the party who thinks there is a constitutional right to kill unborn babies, and to change the genders of your children).

Anyway, it doesn't surprise me at all that leftist women dislike Tulsi. Of course they do. She's young and hot and your boyfriend is probably voting for her in secret.
