"She began dating Mr. Brown, now 85, around 1994, when she was working in Alameda County and he was speaker of the California Assembly."

"He appointed her to two well-compensated state posts. He gave her a BMW. He introduced her to people worth knowing.... Ms. Harris’s allies have bristled at any suggestion that Mr. Brown powered her ascent, dismissing the charge as sexist and making clear that she was plenty capable of impressing on her own... Ms. Harris told SF Weekly in 2003 that she was so independent of Mr. Brown that he 'would probably right now express some fright about the fact that he cannot control me.' 'His career is over,' she said, as Mr. Brown’s second mayoral term wound down. 'I will be alive and kicking for the next 40 years.' But Ms. Harris also promoted Mr. Brown’s support on her fliers. And his barely hidden hand helped goose her precedent-busting fund-raising. 'He was instrumental behind the scenes,' said Mark Buell, a major Democratic donor who served as Ms. Harris’s finance chairman. 'Willie Brown told me — and I didn’t want to believe him — you have to raise $1 million to win this race. And we did.' Mr. Brown, who now writes political columns, cheekily declined to be interviewed, on the grounds that he could not assist a rival publication... Asked if Mr. Brown was a factor in the [2003] race — either as a boogeyman deployed by her rivals or as a sitting mayor with an interest in the outcome — Ms. Harris said: 'Um, I’d — you know. You can ask the pundits. I — yeah.'"

From "Kamala Harris Was Ready to Brawl From the Beginning/In her first race, she defied her old boss, a fund-raising pledge — and the implication that she owed her career to her ex-boyfriend" (NYT).

I did the math so you don't have to: In 2003, Brown was 69 and Harris was 38. And 69 divided by 2 plus 7 is 41.5.

Whatever you want to say about how Harris ascended in politics in California, you know very well what she's been doing as a presidential candidate in the past year. She's a terrible candidate. As I wrote after the last debate: "I don't understand why she's there and I don't believe she understands." Has anyone ever asked her the "Ted Kennedy" question, "Why do you want to be President of the United States?"

Lots of people have used various stratagems to get a boost so to speak. That she used intimacy makes for a kind of titter-titter (no pun intended) revelation, but it doesn't address the more important question, which Ann asked at the end of her column: "what is Kamala Harris doing in the race?" Does she have any evidence to show us that she know how to be the CEO of a very large and rich organization?

Well, she's a black-Asian woman. What else is there to understand?

"and I don't believe she understands."

Well, she understands that in the Dem party being a black-Indian woman spells success. If O could succeed as a mere mulatto posing as black, without any experience or accomplishments, and if ignorant airheads like Slow Joe can make it to high positions, why not Kamala? What else does she need to "understand"?

Of course, there's no political literacy test for Dems. I mean, Slow Joe's ignorance of the actual Constitution, displayed in VP debate, didn't bother anyone. Sure, Kamala is a vacuous airhead herself, but mad schemes like Medicare for All and GND and gun confiscation are routine Dem proposals. So what is there for her to "understand"?

Which is not to excuse her laughable weakness.

IMHO one of the biggest questions of the run up to 2020:

African Americans are a core constituency of the Democratic Party. You could even say that given the 2008 and 2012 results getting out the AA vote is vital and necessary to win the Presidency. So why have the two AA candidates done so poorly?

Big Mike said...

Based on what I have read of her remarks at the debates, it’s because she confuses the Presidency with an absolute monarchy from the 17th century. “Off with their heads!”

Sebastian: Towlette is a dot Indian-White woman, not Black-Asian. She is only 1/8th Black. But to be fair, she's much more Black than Liawatha is (feather) Indian, or Soy Boy Extraordinaire Master Beto is Mexican.

Even Democrats know that dot-Indians in America are prosperous and never collect welfare, so they're certainly not going to promote that part of her ancestry.

Willy Brown was the shot caller, oops I mean Ca Assembly leader till term limits were voted in.

Willy Brown is an Amazing politician, and his columns have been insightful.

Ca politics have been dominated by union money, and support of leftist causes. Lots of gay mafia money floating around, with sf and Hollywood being huge sources of funds. Being a Prosecutor Gabe Kamala safe on being accused of being soft on crime.

She has all the right pedigrees of identity politics, but is not doing well.

Some Guesses Why:

1. Gay mafia money is split supporting candidates, with an actual gay candidate or two.
2. Black Women, kingmakers of the Democratic Primaries, don’t like her.
3. Blacks don’t see her as truly Black
4. Her tough on crime resume collides with black lives matters
5. She is not ready for prime time, and can’t think on her feet
6. She comes across as the other women
7. She married a White husband, further distancing her from the Black community
8. Her hit against Biden on bussing backfired
9. Gifford’s torpedoed her below the waterline on crime, and she has never recovered
10. She came across as shrill during the Kavanaugh hearings

Yes, David Begley is correct- the knives are coming out for Harris now. In a different reality, had Warren stumbled badly, and Harris were in 3rd place, the knives would have come out for Warren at this point.

I wrote many months ago that the media really want another female candidate, and early on they settled on Harris. I wrote that the media would carefully try to maneuver the primary field into a single female versus 2-4 male candidates- the idea being that the male candidates would draw on the same pool of male primary voters, while a single female candidate would have that gender to herself. This article is the NYTimes telling us they think Harris is toast, and I have to agree with that sentiment after Thursday night.

Harris made her reputation, such as it is, by sleeping with Brown which was an open secret (a wink, wink, nudge, nudge joke for years). When I was working N.E. IA dairy country I learned looks are deceptive. While working one afternoon I spotted a very attractive lady (from the rear) go to the counter and ask for me! As I was waiting for an appointment I was trying to figure out how to work her in. Then she turned for my office, and it was my appointment! A 60 something woman and her husband that then walked in. Working a dairy farm keeps a person fit. This womans ass (in white short jean shorts) would shame any 20 something that does Pilates, or spin class, or what ever else is "in" at the moment. But, turn her around, and you have the face of a 60 something woman that has been working outside all of her life.

BJM said...

@Full Moon

One forgets that during this time frame Brown was the most powerful Democrat in a Republican majority California. Brown was responsible more than any other Dem Pol for turning California blue. No one challenged him.

Hallinan has a troubled, checkered past and used his family connections and wealth to muscle his way into politics, he was totally inept. Bill Fazio was an outsider in city that played inside baseball. Fired as a senior prosecutor Fazio left politics and became one the country's top criminal layers. Brown was Harris' ticket to the inside. She is incapable of playing in the league she now finds herself.

SF has a corrupt political machine that has been controlled by Irish-American and Italian-American families for a century, no matter which party was in power, the old guard held sway. Mayor-ships, state assembly and congressional seats were handed from one family scion or anointed candidate to the next.

For example Pelosi was given her seat by Sala Burton. Philip and John Burton were major players in California state politics. John Burton, until he was forced out of office by term limits in 2004,served as the President pro tempore of the State Senate. Philip held the Congressional 5th district seat from 1964 to his death in 1987, when his wife, Sala, assumed the seat and herself falling ill, appointed Pelosi to fill the seat. Redistricting finally gave the Dems control of the Bay Area congressional and state Assembly seats providing Pelosi a safe seat; the 12th district may be the safest Dem seat in the country.

Pelosi's rise was due to the Burtons and the strength of her Italian-American father Thomas D'Alesandro (D) Dem machine cred. D'Alesandro a Democratic Congressman from Maryland was Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years. Her mother was a well-known Dem organizer, early feminist and fundraiser. Pelosi's brother, Thomas D'Alesandro III, also a Democrat, was Mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971.

Sorry to go on so long, but the SF Bay Area is an entertaining hotbed of political maneuvering, money and skulduggery that would put Mos Eisley to shame.

You gotta love SF -- this from 1999 when Fazio was running against Hallinan for DA:

If you thought the San Francisco district attorney's race was sinking in mud, wait till the mail arrives this weekend.

D.A. Terence "Kayo" Hallinan, lagging in the polls, is coming out swinging with a hot-pink (we kid not) San Francisco mailer that features a purported hooker standing in front of the Dragon massage parlor, with the headline: "He wants us to believe he was interviewing a witness."

The mailer is a slam at his opponent, former deputy District Attorney Bill Fazio, who was caught up in a police raid last year in a Tenderloin massage parlor.

Fazio, who at the time was defending a murder suspect accused of shaking down massage parlors, said he was there to interview a witness.

When Hallinan brought up the issue during a radio debate, Fazio smacked back by dredging up an old sexual harassment suit that Hallinan settled with a former aide who said he was always trying to grope her.

It's a little weird (to me) that so many feminist icons on the left have achieved their positions of authority by using the fame/positions of their male family members: Clinton, most obviously, but Harris, Pelosi, Gilibrandt. And Warren gamed the system by getting promoted on the basis of her "minority" status. On the other hand, there are many Republicans who actually achieved political viability by their own efforts: Carly Fiorina, a premier example, but also (dare I say?) Sarah Palin? I know people will point out nepotism on the right (Cheney) and self promotion on the left (Tulsi Gabbard). But the leading lights the left have personal histories that are so anti-feminist ("Daddy pick me!") I can't believe that they are not more embarrassed about it.

Harris' resume is identical to Obama's and also to Michelle Obama's.

Race is all that matters in their circles. Present as minority with a law degree and some vague political ambition and you're showered with no-show jobs in nonprofits and academia and city government, state government if the state is blue.

Michelle strolled into one job interview demanding a six figure salary and time off immediately. Obama was handed three no-show gigs at one time. Kamala -- is she really just 1/8 black -- got two well-remunerated appointments and a BMW. We paid for all of that. The Obamas got the mansion. Even in college Obama was jetting off to Pakistani mansions where he participated in quail hunts and was waited on by slave labor. Literally.

Most people can't understand the ubiquitousness of this gravy train for the right sorts of elite racial officials. The times cant stop whining about Kavanaugh's privilege and his elite lifestyle, but they cannot imagine criticizing people like the Obamas and Harris for living much higher on the hog while doing far less work, though Harris, like Kavanaugh, did work for a living at some point, and the Obamas never even showed up at half their gigs.
