Canada jolted.

ADDED: Why are people referring to that makeup as "brownface"? It's as dark as any blackface I've seen. I know, he says it was an Aladdin costume, but doesn't that make it worse? He was overdarkening for the character he purported to play.

Fox News headline: "CNN's Don Lemon knocks Trump while praising Justin Trudeau's apology over brownface photo."
"I shouldn't have done that. I should have known better, but I didn't and I'm really sorry," Trudeau told reporters. "I take responsibility for my decision to do that. I shouldn't have done that. I should've known better. It was something that I didn't think was racist at the time but now I recognize that it was something racist to do and I'm deeply sorry."...

"Wow, a leader apologizing. It seems odd, doesn't it?" Lemon reacted. "Because we have one who doesn't.... I do have to say this before we go: think about it however you want to think about it. When someone apologizes- wow!... We don't often see that here, especially in a world leader who is saying 'I should've known better and I'm sorry.' You can feel about it however you want, but that, to me, that does mean a lot."
As if Don Lemon would honor an apology from Trump! Trump doesn't apologize because it wouldn't work. It would backfire. Trudeau seems to be apologizing because it's the only approach he can come up with. The question is whether apologies are going to be accepted, and who believes they'll be accepted equally, regardless of which side you're on vis a vis the the apologizer? It's like calls for civility. In present-day American political discourse, they're always about getting the other side to tone it down. That's why my tag for the discussion of civility is "civility bullshit." I feel the same way about calls for apologies (within present-day American political discourse). They're always bullshit.

There is a strange disconnect in this election.

People don't watch tv, and don't read the newspapers.

This photo and the fuss is going to be the first time a very large number of voters start paying attention to the election. The Liberals have been very very quiet; the snc-lavelin scandal is an undercurrent, Trudeau didn't participate in a debate, and isn't taking to the media. Their campaign is one of demonization, the conservatives are closet racists.

Then this. I would bet that the girl is a student, he was a teacher there. This is going to get worse.

Canadians punish political parties and leaders. There is lots of simmering discontent but nothing to pin it on. Now there is. Trudeau will make it worse and the liberal party reaction will be even worse.

Break out the popcorn.

My worldview is that the left commit every sin they denounce but they get away with it because 1) they are in the same tribe as the media/academia/etc. and 2) they hide their sins under a mask of virtue. Then came Trump. Trump is the world’s greatest mask-ripper-offer. He does it directly — Pocahontas ring a bell? — and indirectly by stimulating his haters into doing the work for him.

Yesterday in conversation the election came up. Oh yeah, when is it? The signs are just starting to show up. Very few people consume Canadian media.

Now they are paying attention, something like driving by a head on collision.

There are vanishingly few black people in Canada. Some small communities here and there, some immigrant populations. Lots of South asians. Our sense of racism is a holier than thou view of the US. Trump the racist wants to close the border, Trudeau the Enlightened opens the border. The self righteousnessness and condescension drips off these people.

This is truly delicious.

Andrew said...

I'll be honest. I've never understood why blackface is offensive. If a person of some other race wore "whiteface," it would mean absolutely nothing to me. I realize there's a negative history in our country, but why should that prohibit anyone else from wearing it? People need to learn that they can choose not to be offended. If they are offended, no one else is obligated to defer to their feelings. That's especially the case when it's a contrived offense, i.e. something that we're supposed to be offended by.

This country would be a much better place if everyone learned to say the words, "I don't care if you're offended. Get over yourself." In his own way, Trump is doing that constantly, which is one more reason I love the man.

Howard, it got old the first time it happened. It just never stops being important.

And it should be even more important to progressives. Progressives want to change things, to move forward, to "progress" as it were. An important mechanism for this is rules. Conservatives may not like some of the changes, but as long as progressives change the rules, conservatives by their nature tend to follow rules, even if they don't like them.

But if you have double standards, then conservatives will be less willing to:
1) follow the rule that has a clear double standard.
2) follow new rules in general
3) respect the authority (political, legal, social and so on) that originated the double standard

If conservatives no longer respect the authority, they will find new sources of authority, favoring those that espouse rules more in line with their perceived values.

Or, if you want the tl;dr, this is how you got Trump, and this is how you get more Trump, and this is also how you get something worse than Trump.

Anyway, tell me: Why do the same people get upset with a person dressing up as another race celebrate a man dressing up as a woman and reading books to little children?

The diversity rule are incoherent. My conclusion is that they don't really care, they just want to hurt people.

Howard:

another possible outcome is that the conservatives, if they have the power to enforce the rule, do so.

This brings up an interesting topic that I have not heard discussed in game theory. What if either side can create a rule, and both sides have the ability to enforce the rule, but neither side has the ability to unilaterally veto the rule -- that is, both parties must agree to veto the rule? How does that influence interactions?

Here we have a rule: "making racist statements, either verbally or non-verbally, should penalize the maker indefinitely -- at least as long as there is proof"

Both sides seem to have a lot to lose, as both sides have candidates that have violated the conditions of that rule. So does this eventually result in a state where the rule is permanently in effect, or where both parties agree to veto the rule? Does the rule stay vetoed? How does the ability to predict the future affect the decision?

Amadeus 48 said...

TestTube--Both parties opportunistically enforce and abandon the rule as suits their interests, with one side ultimately liquidating the other out of fury and vengeance.

In the real world, people don't play games very long. It gets serious fast.

Howard said...

TestTube: The point is not the rules, there are no rules, just the laws of physics and the jungle. This means that instead of whining and complaining, conservatives need to step up their game and become part of the mainstream culture by going to the right schools and work hard at getting into entertainment, media and high technology.

We all know that's not going to happen, they resigned the field decades ago.

Just to make sure I understand the new rules - anyone who changes the color of their skin, for any reason, will now be vilified? How about changing the texture of your hair? Is it racist for anyone not of African descent to braid their hair into cornrows? Is it racist for those of African descent to straighten their hair? Are flattop crew-cuts reserved for Caucasians?

As to Valerie Jarrett:
She is the granddaughter on her mother's side of Robert Rochon Taylor, an architect and chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority. The notorious Robert Taylor Homes, now demolished were named for him.

Valerie's mother is Barbara T. Bowman, for many years head of the Erickson Institute. Valerie's father was James E. Bowman, a doctor and professor at the University of Chicago. He was the first African American resident at St. Luke's Hospital.

After leaving the army in 1955, he decided to leave the US while segregation was still in place and became the chair of the pathology department at a hospital in Shiraz, Iran. He joined the U of C in 1962 and became the first tenured African American in the biological sciences department.

This is a seriously stupid controversy, but it does show that the lefties don't really care about this--Northam proved that. Now Trudeaup is going to prove it again.

These controversies are just to trick weak and stupid people on the right. If you thought it was OK to wear a costume to a party, it was OK.

By the way, the best costume I ever saw was a guy who shaved his head and tied a rubber ear to his teeth with dental floss while wearing boxing trunks and a robe.

Yup--he went as Mike Tyson.

This whole "outrage over blackface" thing is total bullshit.

No one is harmed, and no Melanistic-Americans care, except for the perpetually outraged, who are offended by everything, including certain clouds.

Get a life, people. While you spin your wheels with this nonsense, the countdown timer of your life continues to run down.

There is no snooze alarm on the countdown timer of your life. Open the windows, smell the air, smell the dirt, look at the light. You are alive, but only temporarily. Is this the best you can do?

Thank you for your considered reply.

The point is absolutely the rules. Mainstream culture is defined by the rules. Rules also define the "right" schools. When the rules change, those things change as well.

There are other paths to power besides getting into entertainment, media and high technology.

The rules blunt the effect of the law of the jungle. Jungles don't have entertainment, media, high technology, culture (let alone a "mainstream" culture) or institutions of higher education. The laws of physics don't do a good job modeling social interactions.

The next few years will be interesting ones for observers of history, social media and politics.

I worked as a graphic designer for Allison Davis, Obama's first law boss. His dad was the first Black sociologist at UC or something that got him a U.S. postage stamp. Allison was as white as me [100% Euro] but identified as an African-American and was very well-connected. His mom must have been ultra-white, but I digress.

Anyway, I worked for him on a couple of publicly-funded housing developments. His mantra was "Doing well by doing good." He did well but how much good he did....

The photograph from 2001 in Vancouver, BC is like the intersection of Ralph Northam and Al Franken. He is pretty darn handsy there.

Also, this was 2001. Prime Minister Zoolander is 47 years old, so this was when he was 29 years old.

I also find it interesting that he had donned blackface in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. That is three decades of blackface. That is impressive and is going to take a lot of apologizing.

I have no great insight into Trudeau's heart and motivation for wearing blackface, but I don't think an excess of white privilege was the most important factor. That's not to say that he's not an enormously privileged person, but I would put his privilege down to being the good looking son of rich, important people rather than to whiteness. I never had his level of privilege. Few people do. It's not a universal white thing. It's more a Trudeau thing.

If one does not get out much, one would not know that some Tamils and persons of other ethnicities from South Asia are darker than the darkest from the Dark Continent. Let's not forget why we find "blackface" offensive. It's not because we object to a White person trying to look like a Black person -- plenty of examples have been cited in these comments of White actors playing Black characters, which have not generally been considered offensive. What we as a society have called "blackface" and considered to be offensive for many decades is White people making themselves up to look, not like real Black people, but like racist stereotypes of Black people - the minstral show "darkie". That's what the image on Va. Gov. Northam's yearbook page was, for example.

Sixty years ago, when I was in high school, our drama club put on a play called "The Last Mile", set in the Death Row section of a prison. The prisoner who was executed at the end of the first act was Black. His race was important, because his crime would not have resulted in capital punishment except for the racial prjudice of the "system". He was a sympathetic character. Problem was, we were a small school that, at the time, had only two Black students, neither of whom was interested in the drama club, and neither of whom would have been believable in the role (the prisoner supposedly killed the victim with his bare hands, and our two Black schoolmates were little guys). But State law banned "Blackface" performances. Could we have a White actor play the role in black makeup without violating the law? Yes, we could, or so the relevant government official ruled, because the performance did not hold up the "Negro Race" to mockery and ridicule. I thought that was right then, and I think it's right now.

It's hard to tell from a single photo, but I think the despicable Trudeau should get a pass on the racism charge.

Instead he should be nailed on cultural appropriation.

In one of the priceless interviews he's given, he says he did not remember wearing the "darkening." He offered this as an explanation for failing to come forward earlier and attributed his failure to remember to his privilege, which prevented him from analyzing privilege adequately even though he has dedicated his life to analyzing his privilege as an "ally" to the unprivileged.

Oh, and that there might be more photos of other instances of not remembering.

How do you not remember having your entire body carefully airbrushed with black paint before putting on silk pajamas and a turban?

Maybe he was on ketamine. That seems like a more reasonable explanation than the one he's offering.

Rules are for everyone. If the "big" people don't heed the rule, then, generally, either they go or the rule goes. It will be interesting to see what happens in this case, especially since Ralph Northam is still in power.

The quote is actually: "war is the continuation of politics by other means" (Clausewitz). Which implies that war is one (extreme) way to do politics, which in turn implies there are means other than war to carry out politics. Adherence to a set of agreed-upon rules is one of those means other than war. Let the rules lapse, and things get really dirty, as you see in any riot or revolution. Another good reason to a) play by the rules and b) not mess with the rules too much.
