"President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions."

"As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations. Officials said the president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries. The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off, a senior administration official said. Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the official said."

Nobody in Iran is getting any sleep for the next couple of days.

And we didn't have to do a thing to make that happen other than to let a news story out.

This can be kept up for a while, they're paranoid enough as it is.

If you really want to get them scurrying around, release a story about target tracking satellites making passes from on high.

So, what now, Iran?

It sounds like a $50 toilet seat but I'm sure that includes the ground elements.

The ground segment consists of a Mission Control Element (MCE) and Launch and Recovery Element (LRE), provided by Raytheon. The MCE is used for mission planning, command and control, and image processing and dissemination; an LRE for controlling launch and recovery; and associated ground support equipment.

When I was very young, during contretemps between two young bucks, one would sometimes pull back their right fist as if to launch a sucker punch, start forward but stop and grab the ear lobe and sneer: "Made you flinch [sissy]!" I don't know if this move had a name but it looks like Trump's seen it, too.

Remember, there were four tanker attacks last month and with the recent two, far as I know, no one's been hurt. Proportionality is only adhered to by winners. If the Iranians lit up a lot of AA assets, so much the better.

Being a Field Marshal and all, I would think you might wonder if the NY Times was truthful.

I don't know how you can interpret anything I wrote, on this or any thread, to mean that I want to attack or go to war with Iran. Trump, however belatedly, made the right decision. My only point in this thread is that Obama had done exactly the same thing (cancelled the attack after everything was "cocked and loaded"), you guys would have been screaming bloody murder.

You probably would have made fun of him too, for not knowing you have to load a gun before you cock it, not after (or that the proper expression is "locked and loaded" although the actual phrase is "load and lock", but John Wayne turned it around because it sounded better).

Not even remotely similar to this situation.

Like a lot of people I keep underestimating Trump. At first, I thought this was a mistake, but it seems obvious that the Iranian regime wanted a strike from us to make them sympathetic to the international cabal of America haters which includes the American press. They wanted to be the victims, which that cabal would be more than willing to make them if we attacked. Trump denied them that, while still indicating he was willing and able to strike. The Iranians did not get what they wanted, and now it will be harder for them to claim victim status, becuase Trump showed restraint. Now when he does strike, he can say "I tried to be patient, but they gave me no choice. They forced it." That would not work before this restraint was shown. Stable genius.

So now Freder admits that Trump was "broadly correct" about Iran, but somehow he's a "bloody idiot." The Kryptonite-to-decrepit-hag-Inga Syria strike was wrong, and Trump was very lucky that nothing much happened as a result--but strategic geniuses like Obama and Hillary got us into new war after new war, and Trump hasn't done that nor has he issued a "red line" comment despite fondest wishes; has he bragged about how good he is at killing people yet?

That other stuff is just bullshit, like making stupid fun of Obama for "Marine Corpse" and "57 states." That does not at all apply to Obama's "flexibility" comment--another thing religious maniacs like thin-skinned Inga would rather die than mention.

Freder Frederson said...

You need to work on your reading comprehension. I said he was "belatedly" correct. And he is a bloody idiot for not paying attention earlier when his military briefers told him how many people would be killed (or not asking during the planning).

You can always tell a lefty pussy when they talk about guns. No fucking idea. How many guns have you ever handled Freder ?

I know you don't own one.

The expression is "Cocked and Locked" as in a Colt 1911 in which you put a round in the chamber, cocking the gun, then lock the safety. I'm sure he got the term mixed with "Lock and Load" another common expression well known to people who actually know about guns.

Democrats and Data, national security data.

Jackson Cosko was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison. Prosecutors called his offense an “extraordinary” and “vicious” crime where the ex-Democratic aide stole a senator’s data, mined it for blackmail material and then published the home addresses and phone numbers of Republican senators during the 2018 hearings for now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Even after the computer administrator was caught in the act and arrested for spying on a senator’s office using his advanced technical skills, Capitol Police didn’t check the USB ports of nearby computers. Six different computers within steps of where he was arrested in the Senate had keylogger devices in them that continued to capture and beam private information over WiFi. They were only exposed through a confession.

Police then got a search warrant on his home, but missed critical evidence because they didn’t check the oven.

Whoops !

Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas gave him an unpaid position, apparently without calling Hassan’s office as a reference check. The idea of a 27-year-old man who was working in a specialized role in the upper chamber suddenly taking an unpaid “internship” in the lower chamber didn’t seem to set off red flags for Jackson Lee.

What the heck. Hiring felons is supposed to be good according to the black caucus.

Comes the new ex-CIA Congress critter.

Eight days later, Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a Virginia Democrat, hired Deforest-Davis anyway. Spanberger, a former CIA agent, apparently did not detect Deforest-Davis’s history. Spanberger’s spokesman Connor Joseph did not respond to a request to explain whether the congresswoman’s office called anyone in the Senate to get a job reference and why her central Virginia constituents should trust that her office safeguards their personal data.

Hey, the CIA is brilliant ! No problem.

Freder Frederson said...

How many guns have you ever handled Freder ?

So I point out that "cocked and loaded" is incorrect, and yet you accuse me, not Trump, of having no fucking idea.

And you are right I have never heard the expression "cocked and locked". Learn something new every day. I have heard "locked and loaded" and always thought it sounded backwards. So when I googled it it turns out that an M1 was "loaded and locked" but that John Wayne in The Sands of Iwo Jima got it backwards but they left it in because it sounded better (there are some other explanations for the term, including some that have nothing to do with firearms and one that goes back to the naval guns of the 1600's).

But regardless, until today I (and as you point out, either have you) have never heard of the expression "cocked and loaded".

I was thinking about the potential of a strike at Iran last night (unaware of the news) and I had several thoughts.

1. "Why did the mullahs shoot down the drone?" My thought: because they are in big trouble at home and the traditional means of shoring up a declining regime is to incite an attack against it.

2."What would happen if we made a meaningful strike?" My thought: the mullahs would use that as an excuse to escalate their "attacks".

3. "What would we do then?" Escalation feeds escalation and before you know it we are into the Tar Baby mode.

4. "Had anyone had an opportunity to game our strike to see what the fallout might be?" My thought: No, and that argued to me that any move right now would be precipitate. I also thought the calculus of trading Iranian lives for a drone was something that should be carefully considered.

5. "We have plenty of assets in the area, what's the rush; why tip our hand?" : PDT and I came too the same conclusion. A careful, measured approach and the threat of a surprise retaliation makes a lot of sense.

As for Obama's redline. The calculus was completely different. He was threatening action to prevent massive loss of human life in Syria. He failed to follow up ( which I think was the right decision) which made him look like the wimp he was. Trump has said Iran made a "big mistake" - he made no concrete declaration like the "red line" - and my guess is that the result will become apparent in time. I suspect the mullahs are truly disappointed that Trump did not fall into their trap.

It might as well be. The point of a drone is that it doesn't put people in harms way. We can afford to lose one and only discuss it in terms of financial costs, perhaps also reputational impact but not about loss of life. One problem with hitting Iran is that they don't have much that is worth that much that is not connected to a life.

Fretting about the loss of a military surveillance drone is engaging the sunk cost fallacy. Once it was built and deployed it doesn’t matter what happens to it. Iran shot it down in the hopes of provoking a response that would make the regime sympathetic to its people and the vaunted international community, aka: the UN. Trump’s action is in effect a nope, not on my watch.

So tired of winning.

Actually, ISTR that different weapons have different manuals of arms. I won't play expert, but I believe that the Springfield 03 operated differently from the Enfield operated differently from the Mauser. Probably with one weapon system or another, any of these terms is correct. The point is, Freder, that to continue the weapons analogies, you shot your bolt. You only have so much ammunition to play with and that's what you spent your credibility on, Trump's word order.

I'm sure that the president lied, bullshitted, or told a story regarding the precise sequence of events. Good. That's the way it should be. He's trying to communicate and the effective communication is the communication that he decides is effective, not necessarily what actually happened.

If he knew all along that the strike would be deadly and that he would not executed for that reason, it nonetheless may have suited his purposes to prepare the strike, to rattle the sabre.

He doesn't have to answer to you as to what his true intentions are. Nobody in their right mind would do that. Did FDR and Churchill get on the telephone to Hitler and say We're coming to Normandy!? Is that the way you think it works?
