I did some reading on the David Garrow story. What he found was not tapes or transcripts but supposed summaries of tapes and transcripts. So no one has seen the evidence or listened to it or examined the tapes for editing and yet we are supposed to accept a terrible story about a man, now dead, who cannot defend himself and this story emanates from the man's known enemy. The Spanish keeps it sounding very Latin. The whole thing translates superbly to Spanish, both in tone and subject btw. Much the same sort of thing happened, in stages, in Spain as in Italy/Sicily. Spanish suits very well. I know those people.
The only problem, not a small one, is a lack of specific character, dialect and tone, as with most dubbing. But Il Gattopardo was almost entirely dubbed from the outset, even in the Italian version, and the only person in the cast who could speak Sicilian was Cardinale and of course her part was dubbed in Italian.
And Claudia Cardinale charms of course. She is less beautiful than fascinating. It is odd, there were more beautiful women, but one wants to look at Cardinale.
Visconti did something special with the cinematography. This thing from 1963 looks like something from twenty years later, real, almost as immersive as in Kubricks Barry Lyndon. But the colors of course are Sicilian gold, not English grey and green. As Kubrick did, his people and their surroundings look entirely like 1860 and not 1963.

What's funny is that people who ad nauseam relate stories of the CIA interference in democracy across the globe maintain that the very idea that the CIA would try to pick their own boss in the US is paranoid fantasy.
I've only ever been by one site, and it was Ace of Spades HQ. Ace hated me because I would address some of his lamer posts/comments with the same tone he used with commenters. I think the final straw was when I told him he should quit yapping about calories and burn-rate and "gainz" and get off his ass and actually do something physical. He was not a fan of that advice. It's been 3 or 4 years since I was banned, but I have access to a college worth of IP's these days and occasionally check it out and chime in.

Re the Dutch euthanasia story -- @Naomi O'Leary (correspondent with @POLITICOEurope):
--A 17-year-old rape victim was NOT euthanised in the Netherlands. @euronews @Independent @DailyMailUK @dailybeast are all wrong. It took me about 10 mins to check with the reporter who wrote the original Dutch story. Noa Pothoven asked for euthanasia and was refused.
--Infuriatingly, it's too late: this misinformation has already spread all over the world from Australia to the United States to India. Her name, #noapothoven is even trending in Italy.
--I spoke to Paul Bolwerk, a reporter who has been covering the story for @DeGelderlander since 2018. Noa Pothoven had been severely ill with anorexia and other conditions for some time. Without telling her parents, she sought and was refused euthanasia
--The family had tried many kinds of psychiatric treatment and Noa Pothoven was repeatedly hospitalised; she made a series of attempts to kill herself in recent months. In desperation the family sought electro shocktherapy, which was refused due to her young age.
--After electroshock therapy was refused, Pothoven insisted she wanted no further treatment and a hospital bed was set up at home in the care of her parents. At the start of June she began refusing all fluids and food, and her parents and doctors agreed not to force feed her.
--A decision to move to palliative care and not to force feed at the request of the patient is not euthanasia. Dutch media did not report Noa Pothoven's death as a case of euthanasia. This idea only appeared in English language pickups of Dutch reporting.
--How has this happened? @newscomauHQ and @laubchad have questions to answer, as authors of early English-language articles that made a leap to conclude euthanasia from the report that Pothoven once asked for it, and an Instagram post in which she wrote that she was going to die
--I had immediate questions reading the Dutch articles about whether this was a case of euthanasia or not. It would have been an enormous deal in the Netherlands if a 17-year-old really had euthanasia. It's really easy to check. Like I say, took me about 10 minutes. Infuriating.
"--A decision to move to palliative care and not to force feed at the request of the patient is not euthanasia."
A decision by the government to let someone purposefully starve themselves to death for emotional reasons (i.e., not cancer, etc): if not euthanasia, then a significant overlap in the Venn diagram with government-assisted suicide.
Which is hair-splitting by a state-of-the-art laser hair-splitting unit.
Fox News online features this morning a group photo of world leaders commemorating the 75th anniversary of the landing of allies on Normandy beaches. In the photo is Angela Merkel, the prime minister of Germany. Can you believe it?
Power is out. AEP has a nifty automatic block switching system that cuts off power from one side and supplies it from the other automatically, so power outages are much rarer than they were once. Unfortunately we're in a segment that has poles by a bad curve in the road and cars are always taking out one of the poles, so it doesn't matter which side you supply power from, it's a short circuit. That means a 12 hour outage, to find new pole, replace pole, screw on new cross segments, attach wires. Assuming the crews aren't all in Dayton.
It is like having the Murphy of Murphy's Law in a college of engineering.
LOL. My wife has her head in her hands, steeling herself for the Ego she'll have to put up with all week because of your comment.
Is that like self-deporting?
It's a new trolling tactic I'm exploring. See, usually you are expected to sneak back in under a new name and carry out a 5 point revenge plan. But I figure that by leaving gracefully as a courtesy it will drive Patterico into madness. Going on 6 months now, I bet he thinks about me every day, I bet I haunt his dreams. ;)
group photo of world leaders commemorating the 75th anniversary of the landing of allies on Normandy beaches. In the photo is Angela Merkel, the prime minister of Germany. Can you believe it?
My history studies may be PC-tainted, but I recall that WW1 was in large part due to Germany's "colony envy". The other powers had outposts all over the world, Germany was late to the colonization rush and missed out. In my reading of Manchester's Churchill, it's implied that the British elites treated their German counterparts like the New Money family that moves into a wealthy neighborhood and is still treated like low class trash. The Germans just wanted to be taken seriously.
And now, Germany (under Merkel) has essentially destroyed the entire Euro continent.
@euronews @Independent @DailyMailUK @dailybeast are all wrong.
But their advertisers are all happy.
Is there a Heinlein book where a world war is triggered over clickbait by news orgs eagerly trying to lure Gillette into advertising on their sites? Should be. That's where we are headed.

It's looking like Barack Obama did an end run around the Logan Act by asking foreign intelligence agencies to spy on the Trump campaign and give their intel to Brennan over at CIA.

I think people go there to get hard and stay hard -- at least in their minds. A soft underbelly belies the image.
Interesting tell. Why did you find that relevant enough to mention?
Usually "everyone seeming to agree" gives me pause. In a lifetime of experience, the pattern is that everyone is nodding along to conform and missing some very important and sometimes dangerous information.
Principled lifelong conservatives are not in the habit of making appeals to conformity. What's next? Are you going to promote Global Warming Doom (the sequel) because of "scientific consensus"? Curious.

Suppose that's true and suppose that it's deliberate on Trump's part. He's competing with another Chuck over there in the fashion department -- Prince Charles. Why not play foil to that fop?
I just noticed, on turning on a laptop to listen to Scott Adams in a few minutes, that none of the neighbors' WIFIs are listed. Apparently nobody puts their wifi on a UPS, or runs them on a generator.

Powerline and Patterico will censor conservatives that liberal Althouse will not.
I was banned by Patterico, although he never said so, my comments just stopped appearing. He was angry because I disagreed with him several times and he called me a liar. I think the last time was during the Roy Moore thing in Alabama, but Patrick has TDS really bad. Recently I understand he admitted that 85% of his previous commenters and readers had left.
I have no issues with Powerline but have commented on Paul's TDS. Ricochet used to have a lot of TDS but there are only a couple of such commenters left. One was humiliated yesterday when he demanded that someone prove David French at NR had actually accused Trump of Russian collusion. The reply was a list of six videos of French doing just that. On CNN and MSNBC.
Yup. Weird thing is I used to follow Patterico regularly, he was one I went to for sharp analysis. It's amazing what TDS will do to a person.
And Powerline. I discovered them during Rather's Memo Farce. I was a Freeper at the time and was "in the room" when Buckhead posted his now legendary takedown. It only got public traction because LGF and Powerline picked up the ball and ran with it. So they earned my loyalty. Looking back, it's ironic that LGF and Powerline demonstrated they weren't deserving of such loyalty.
The world pays a heavy price, from time to time, for the benefits of German Idealism.
Chez Althouse is an oasis, and has made it to #2 on my daily checkin, right after the bank.
It used to be Insty or Diplomad, but I find the variety, diversity, and intellect a little higher here than at those places, as much as I admire the owners and many commenters.
I used to check Patterico etc but also found them a little obsessive and touchy towards criticism or disagreement. Reason Hit and Run can be interesting, but all the arguments are stale even when the topics are new.
When people complain about a blog, especially this one, I think of a person who has a standing invitation to drop by a friend's open house for some amusement, pointed or piquant conversation, maybe some educated banter, and all they have to do is contribute a little and behave reasonably well . . .
But instead they bitch about the boring company and how the cheese and crackers must be leftovers from last week.

I have no idea how to make a meme or I would do it myself.
For some time now I have speculated that in the end it will come to light that Mr. Steele was furnished his information by U.S. agencies.
If global warming doesn’t genuinely appear in the next decade, I think a generation of Democrats is going to realize they have been played for fools.
All this talk about the Trump family’s fashions while in London is amusing. Because Donald Trump’s tails were the most god awful fit I have ever seen on any man of note.
And practically everyone seems to agree:

They could then move to The Netherlands where high minded people have made euthanasia a thing for all ages. At least that way, they can stop worrying.
Remember our man in Havana, which has been thr model for most accounts of that period from Stephen hunter to phillip Kerr, that was probably an accurate representation of the business.
Carpe Donkum has a video out depicting the plight of minor Democratic candidates who are struggling to get 65,000 individual donations in order to get on the debate platform. The Sorrow and the Pity of a Candidate is at https://www.weaselzippers.us/ As it shows, if we all adopt a candidate, then for just one dollar from each of us, all the candidates can get into the debates.
Let 1000 candidates Bloom and Bust Onstage.

I think Brennan has been at the heart of it all.
I think that the FBI got played by the CIA, but were all too happy to run with it.
We have confirmation that President is leading the most successful diplomatic visit in current history, in the UK. Here is a quote from a loony leftist explaining how great things are going.

I've only ever been BANNED by one site...
They don't seem to verify their info, and clearly open source info like that of the future Westminster attacker doesn't get to then.
If Hillary was using her BlackBerry abroad, she may as well have been writing in clear text unless she was only writing to people with special software on both ends. Encryption algorithms fall to hackers and governments regularly even then.

Most agreed that Piltdown Man was a historic find, until it was proved a hoax. You can find a consensus for just about any inane thought, if you look hard enough.
I am Laslo.
Fox News online features this morning a group photo of world leaders commemorating the 75th anniversary of the landing of allies on Normandy beaches. In the photo is Angela Merkel, the prime minister of Germany. Can you believe it?
Yes I can because they probably used the aps caption.
Dutch girl story is click bait, as anybody would know instantly.
Ratings are the game.
The audience wants that, incidentally. They just don't like being made fools of, so no clicks for the correction. No point even running it.
On to the next emotional experience.
Trump gets it.
Bette Midler IS washed up PSYCHO.
F Hillarywoodland.
Going on 6 months now, I bet he thinks about me every day, I bet I haunt his dreams. ;)
"Trolling. You're doing it wrong."
Beautiful girl. Sings like Karen Carpenter.

You were out to prove that Trump lied when he said he uses the Titleist Pro V1, not the Pro V1x. How's that been going for you?
The nice thing about not banning you at Althouse is we get to watch you hit bottom.
This is not it. You will provide us with amusement for many more months to come.

You might never find that matiannas trench.
"Las Vegas shooter Stephan Paddock was closed by the FBI....Why was the FBI involved??"
Domestic terrorism?
@euronews @Independent @DailyMailUK @dailybeast are all wrong.
But their advertisers are all happy.
Is there a Heinlein book where a world war is triggered over clickbait by news orgs eagerly trying to lure Gillette into advertising on their sites? Should be. That's where we are headed.
Again - at our weekly Tin Foil Conspiracy Help Group, I constantly remind everyone that it's really Madison Ave pulling all the global puppet strings. The Illuminati faction thinks I'm nuts.

What a sad and pathetic little man.
Steele agrees to be interviewed (or was told to agree) but only on UK soil. Sounds like he's afraid he would be incarcerated if he stepped foot on US soil.
It's looking like Barack Obama did an end run around the Logan Act by asking foreign intelligence agencies to spy on the Trump campaign and give their intel to Brennan over at CIA.
How can anyone call themselves a Democrat these days? 3 years of hyperbolic tantrums over Trump-Russia and instead it's Obama-UK/Aussie instead. And all we get are crickets?

Ace is the place for the helpful hardman ware.
I think people go there to get hard and stay hard -- at least in their minds. A soft underbelly belies the image.
No but theres a baldacci book along the same angle, I think it was unironically called the whole truth.
"And practically everyone seems to agree"

Aside from mine.
Re Lydia @7:32: You're right, of course, and your reporting far exceeds that of our usual mediaswine. But if this girl just wanted to off herself, there are many ways she could have done so. Throwing herself in front of a train Anna Karenina-like, or hurling her frail body off a bridge [maybe Dutch bridges aren't high enough?]. Was it her wish to be a cause célèbre? In any case, she was clearly mentally ill and, as Laslo observes, not competent to make decisions regarding her own care.
"In desperation the family sought electro shocktherapy, which was refused due to her young age.--After electroshock therapy was refused, Pothoven insisted she wanted no further treatment and a hospital bed was set up at home in the care of her parents. Narciso,
I wondered about that..but thought it would have been widely reported. Fail on my part.

Maybe the parents should have sought asylum in US.
Looking back, it's ironic that LGF and Powerline demonstrated they weren't deserving of such loyalty.
LGF, which I read religiously at the time, went nuts but Powerline is still fine as far as I am concerned. Adding Steve Hayward was a huge plus.

We are the champions!
Narr, yes, Althouse's is the best...blog...in...the...world. And the best commenters.
Althouse definitely the best blog.
> Free speech exists on her site, even occasionally to her detriment.
> Best commenters anywhere.

Thanks for the “best blog” recognition!
I’ve got to say it just doesn’t bother me to be disagreed with. I have an appetite for conversation. Thanks for all the comments!
