X was a great band. Houston had a pretty good punk scene in 1980 but it was mostly touring bands. Saw them several times. Then John Doe and Exene later on when they were kind of doing a rocking folk/country sound. I’ve see Doe a few more times as he keeps touring.

I did some reading on the David Garrow story. What he found was not tapes or transcripts but supposed summaries of tapes and transcripts. So no one has seen the evidence or listened to it or examined the tapes for editing and yet we are supposed to accept a terrible story about a man, now dead, who cannot defend himself and this story emanates from the man's known enemy. In London today a British Trump Supporter sliced a hole in the Baby Trump Balloon the protesters have been using. The cucks in the GOP will clutch their pearls and proclaim "this is not who we are" but I approve. No more Graceful Surrenders, no more erring on the side of caution, no more Prevent Defense for 4 quarters. Attack attack attack.

The other team can't score an Own Goal if you never take the field to begin with.

The reason the GOP keeps losing is because they are always reacting, always ambushed, and IF they punch back they are always doing it from the back of their heels as they cower backwards into the ropes.

We're not going back to that Post-Trump. If the GOP can't get it, then we'll go Indie or form a new party.

It's weird how Trump's ascendancy has unmasked certain right wing sites. Powerline and Patterico will censor conservatives that liberal Althouse will not.

Does that seem right to you?

Oh, Patterico? I complained that if their moderator was going chastise me for insulting someone back who insulted me, but ignore the guy who insulted me to begin with, then he could stick his CoC where the sun don't shine. Came back to comment on a different topic the next day and the inmates went nuts. Apparently I had been banned. No idea why it didn't take, they accused me of faking ISPs or somesuch (I think my provider rotates them, no sure how that works). Anyways, since their vaunted Ban Hammer (tm) was proven impotent, I gracefully offered to pretend I was blocked and haven't been back since.

Yah, a self-ban. I'm a really dangerous troll. LOL.

TLDR: Two conservative sites censored me, liberal Althouse does not. She's called me out a few times, but never tried to silence me or even tell me to leave because of something I said. Because she's honest when she says Free Speech is one of her first principles. Remember that next time we are giving her a little hell over something.

Visconti's "Il Gattopardo" complete on Youtube.
The Spanish dubbed version, but it really does sound very good.
A bit more accessible in the US I think, than the Italian, and it doesn't sound weird like the English version.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wd6Q4BpiI0U&t=6866s

The Spanish keeps it sounding very Latin. The whole thing translates superbly to Spanish, both in tone and subject btw. Much the same sort of thing happened, in stages, in Spain as in Italy/Sicily. Spanish suits very well. I know those people.

The only problem, not a small one, is a lack of specific character, dialect and tone, as with most dubbing. But Il Gattopardo was almost entirely dubbed from the outset, even in the Italian version, and the only person in the cast who could speak Sicilian was Cardinale and of course her part was dubbed in Italian.

And Claudia Cardinale charms of course. She is less beautiful than fascinating. It is odd, there were more beautiful women, but one wants to look at Cardinale.

Visconti did something special with the cinematography. This thing from 1963 looks like something from twenty years later, real, almost as immersive as in Kubricks Barry Lyndon. But the colors of course are Sicilian gold, not English grey and green. As Kubrick did, his people and their surroundings look entirely like 1860 and not 1963.

The book is an old favorite. I often feel rather like Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina. The noble (somewhat) and comfortable past is slipping away, transitioning to an irrational and despicable future, and what then is a man with obligations to do? At one point years ago I thought of calling myself lampedusa, or gattopardo, rather than buwaya.

Re the Dutch euthanasia story -- @Naomi O'Leary (correspondent with @POLITICOEurope):

--A 17-year-old rape victim was NOT euthanised in the Netherlands. @euronews @Independent @DailyMailUK @dailybeast are all wrong. It took me about 10 mins to check with the reporter who wrote the original Dutch story. Noa Pothoven asked for euthanasia and was refused.

--Infuriatingly, it's too late: this misinformation has already spread all over the world from Australia to the United States to India. Her name, #noapothoven is even trending in Italy.

--I spoke to Paul Bolwerk, a reporter who has been covering the story for @DeGelderlander since 2018. Noa Pothoven had been severely ill with anorexia and other conditions for some time. Without telling her parents, she sought and was refused euthanasia

--The family had tried many kinds of psychiatric treatment and Noa Pothoven was repeatedly hospitalised; she made a series of attempts to kill herself in recent months. In desperation the family sought electro shocktherapy, which was refused due to her young age.

--After electroshock therapy was refused, Pothoven insisted she wanted no further treatment and a hospital bed was set up at home in the care of her parents. At the start of June she began refusing all fluids and food, and her parents and doctors agreed not to force feed her.

--A decision to move to palliative care and not to force feed at the request of the patient is not euthanasia.
Dutch media did not report Noa Pothoven's death as a case of euthanasia. This idea only appeared in English language pickups of Dutch reporting.

--How has this happened? @newscomauHQ and @laubchad have questions to answer, as authors of early English-language articles that made a leap to conclude euthanasia from the report that Pothoven once asked for it, and an Instagram post in which she wrote that she was going to die

--I had immediate questions reading the Dutch articles about whether this was a case of euthanasia or not. It would have been an enormous deal in the Netherlands if a 17-year-old really had euthanasia. It's really easy to check. Like I say, took me about 10 minutes. Infuriating.

Laslo Spatula said...

"--A decision to move to palliative care and not to force feed at the request of the patient is not euthanasia."

A decision by the government to let someone purposefully starve themselves to death for emotional reasons (i.e., not cancer, etc): if not euthanasia, then a significant overlap in the Venn diagram with government-assisted suicide.

Which is hair-splitting by a state-of-the-art laser hair-splitting unit.

Power is out. AEP has a nifty automatic block switching system that cuts off power from one side and supplies it from the other automatically, so power outages are much rarer than they were once. Unfortunately we're in a segment that has poles by a bad curve in the road and cars are always taking out one of the poles, so it doesn't matter which side you supply power from, it's a short circuit. That means a 12 hour outage, to find new pole, replace pole, screw on new cross segments, attach wires. Assuming the crews aren't all in Dayton.

My history studies may be PC-tainted, but I recall that WW1 was in large part due to Germany's "colony envy". The other powers had outposts all over the world, Germany was late to the colonization rush and missed out. In my reading of Manchester's Churchill, it's implied that the British elites treated their German counterparts like the New Money family that moves into a wealthy neighborhood and is still treated like low class trash. The Germans just wanted to be taken seriously.

And now, Germany (under Merkel) has essentially destroyed the entire Euro continent.

Powerline and Patterico will censor conservatives that liberal Althouse will not.

I was banned by Patterico, although he never said so, my comments just stopped appearing. He was angry because I disagreed with him several times and he called me a liar. I think the last time was during the Roy Moore thing in Alabama, but Patrick has TDS really bad. Recently I understand he admitted that 85% of his previous commenters and readers had left.

I have no issues with Powerline but have commented on Paul's TDS. Ricochet used to have a lot of TDS but there are only a couple of such commenters left. One was humiliated yesterday when he demanded that someone prove David French at NR had actually accused Trump of Russian collusion. The reply was a list of six videos of French doing just that. On CNN and MSNBC.

Fen said...

Yup. Weird thing is I used to follow Patterico regularly, he was one I went to for sharp analysis. It's amazing what TDS will do to a person.

And Powerline. I discovered them during Rather's Memo Farce. I was a Freeper at the time and was "in the room" when Buckhead posted his now legendary takedown. It only got public traction because LGF and Powerline picked up the ball and ran with it. So they earned my loyalty. Looking back, it's ironic that LGF and Powerline demonstrated they weren't deserving of such loyalty.
