Yup. I was dumb enough to skim their paper. Their basis for the claim was the observation that people around 40 years(?) old have a lower incidence of those bumps than younger people or older people.

We hear the daily horror stories about the irreparable damage being done to our planet by global warming. The truth is that the higher CO2 levels are greening our planet. This should come as no surprise to those who farm or garden. Mother nature is very efficient at reclaiming land that was under cultivation. Let a farm field lie fallow for a few years and you will see how quickly nature converts it to its own purposes. So it is with CO2. Nature adapts and compensates.

My lawn is surrounded by woods. I fight an annual battle to push the weeds and brush back from the grass. I fight a daily battle to keep the weeds out of the gardens. The moles own my yard, so I surrendered and raised the height of my mower deck to mow over their tunnels.

After Althouse did a couple Joe Rogan posts recently, I listened to the podcast of his interview with Tulsi Gabbard. I didn't know much about her, but what I did hear seemed pretty good.

No.

Good lord, what an ignorant, conspiracy-minded dingbat! Blamed America for everything that is wrong with the world, including nattering on about Venezuela without ever mentioning socialism (according to Gabbard, Venezuela's problems are the result of John Bolton wanting their oil). She was vague about the existence of a military, but was clear she wanted it gutted to pay for welfare programs.

Maybe the Democratic Party isn't lost if they can see through this putz.

I just read the first 40 pages of the transcript of the Hope Hicks testimony with Chairman Jerry Waddler's committee. Two things stand out. One, Hicks refused to answer 95% of Waddler's questions. And 2, The Waddler kept referring to Ms. Hicks as Ms. Lewandowski.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Louvre recently, just after Pei died, and the discussion here on the glass pyramid. It really is the perfect example of the epic failure of modern architecture.

It was late May. The sun was shining. The pyramid is glass. The security guards needed several large umbrellas to protect them from the direct sunlight, which did nothing to protect them or the visitors from the stifling ambient heat. Even after descending the stairs, the heat permeates the center of the lower-level floor - despite central air conditioning. It was not even June.

The pyramid is in fact an utter failure at its function. It totally sucks for the people who work there, and the guests who wait in line. It is an environmental failure as it requires an inordinate amount of energy in a failed attempt to keep it cool.

The environmental destruction is a recurring and inherent feature of modern architecture. Traditional architecture must work with the environment. A building needs to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The modernist can use technology to circumvent this, but it comes at a very high environmental cost.

Fans of modern architecture confuse architecture with sculpture. They are not the same thing. A glass pyramid may photograph nicely at certain times of the day. But it fails at stated purpose.

Well, the military should be gutted, without doubt, to pay for welfare programs, yes, and infrastructure upgrading and repairs, universal healthcare, and other things to benefit US citizens (rather than killing residents of other nations and destroying their physical infrastructure). I don't know what she had to say about Venezuela, but, aside from whatever internal problems they undoubtedly have (as does every society), the U.S. has indeed interfered with them to their detriment (as we always have with Cuba), including even helping two coup attempts.

Robert, there's no reason to believe that reducing the military budget will translate into more money for this or that pet project. More importantly, people who argue for this seem to have no idea what the military does most of the time (hint: it's not killing the residents of other nations and destroying their infrastructure).

Just because the US has a Venezuela policy doesn't mean the US is responsible for everything that goes on in Venezuela. The primary driver of nearly any country's internal situation is the decisions made by that country. In Venezuela's case, that is the socialist policies of the current and previous leaders. Which I notice you also failed to mention.

Out in Oregon the students are calling for a statue to be taken down - naturally. But this statue is called "Pioneer" and the "Pioneers" of Oregon were the fur trappers. This is a statue of a fur trapper as shown by the clothes which are semi-Indian and by the beard and by the mule whip in the "pioneer's" right hand. Delving further we find that the fur trappers in Oregon were a branch of the Metis - a Roman Catholic, part-Indian, part-French group centered in Manitoba. (The Oregon Metis requested a priest from the Manitoba Archdiocese showing where they came from and what their religion was.) The question then is: was this a statue honoring the Metis contribution to Oregon state?

The dedication said these words:
“the Anglo-Saxon race is a branch of the Teutonic race. It was and is a liberty-loving race. It believes in the protection of life and of liberty and in the rights of property and the pursuit of happiness. This race has large powers of assimilation, and its great ideas of liberty and of the rights of mankind caused other races to become a part of it, so it became a people as well as a race.”

"large powers of assimilation ... caused other races to become part of it ...a people as well as a race" ... Was this a hymn to white supremacy as the statue pullers think or was it a veiled reference to the fact that the statue of Oregon's "Pioneer" was a statue of a Metis trapper? Is pulling the statue down an attack on intermarriage among different identities?

Where we lived in Alexandria VA, the appointed school board pushed through over many objections 6-2-2-2, combining the 3 HS into one 11&12 school (see "Remember the Titans"). The super's youngest child had just graduated. I went from a very good 6th grade to a waste-of-time middle school (classes still all but segregated), so my parents put me in a day boys' school, at about what my brother's costs would be for everything at UNC in state.

Washington Examiner
Nunes claims second Mueller scope memo based on Steele dossier
June 20, 2019

"[Devin Nunes] revealed more details about the now-concluded special counsel investigation’s guidelines, saying on Thursday that Mueller’s second scope memo was based on the unverified Steele dossier nearly in its entirety."

'...The second scope memo, which was kept secret for many months and is still mostly redacted, was written by [Rod] Rosenstein in August 2017, months after the first. In it, Rosenstein told Mueller that the first memo “was worded categorically in order to permit its public release without confirming specific investigations involving specific individuals” while this second scope memo “provides a more specific description of your authority” and was meant to outline which allegations “were within the scope of the investigation at the time of your appointment and are within the scope of the order.”

The second scope memo also laid out a number of yet-unknown investigative targets. The only individual in that memo who has been made public is Manafort, whom Rosenstein said Mueller could investigate based upon allegations that he colluded with Russian government officials with respect to their efforts to interfere with the 2016 election...'

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/devin-nunes-claims-second-mueller-scope-memo-based-on-steele-dossier

To me one of the more interesting things about this is that Rosenstein signed off on at least one of the FBI-initiated Carter Page FISA warrants (reportedly largely based on the Steele Dossier) and then doubled down on his stupidity by in effect vouching for its veracity in the second Mueller scope memo.

If all this is true, Rosenstein has certainly earned himself a place in the Jackass Hall Of Fame.

There is good reporting about a 3rd dossier. IIRC, named something like "dark money ledger" it was debunked when it first appeared, by all knowledgeable intel persons who reasoned that none of it made any sense. It tried to incriminate Manafort of taking cash payments. Those in the know, refused to take it serious, and any attempt to verify and corroborate failed. Everyone identified the ledger as fiction. It was accepted by Mueller, despite its lack of support. Unable to get the dossier into the Mueller Report, Weiseman leaked it to the NYT and then entered the NYT article into the Report.

The moment the dressing-room door is closed, he lunges at me, pushes me against the wall, hitting my head quite badly, and puts his mouth against my lips. I am so shocked I shove him back and start laughing again. He seizes both my arms and pushes me up against the wall a second time, and, as I become aware of how large he is, he holds me against the wall with his shoulder and jams his hand under my coat dress and pulls down my tights.

I am astonished by what I’m about to write: I keep laughing. The next moment, still wearing correct business attire, shirt, tie, suit jacket, overcoat, he opens the overcoat, unzips his pants, and, forcing his fingers around my private area, thrusts his penis halfway — or completely, I’m not certain — inside me. It turns into a colossal struggle. I am wearing a pair of sturdy black patent-leather four-inch Barneys high heels, which puts my height around six-one, and I try to stomp his foot. I try to push him off with my one free hand — for some reason, I keep holding my purse with the other — and I finally get a knee up high enough to push him out and off and I turn, open the door, and run out of the dressing room.

1. They are alleged enemy combatants, a meaningless term. Were they terrorists who tried to attack America, or were they defenders of their homeland, fighting against an invading foreign force? After all, they didn't come here. We went there, attacking them. We are clearly the bad guys here. Or were they hapless innocents, caught up in U.S. dragnets or sold for bounty for their opportunistic countrymen? (Many who had been held at Gitmo and eventually, after years, released, fell into this latter category.)

2. The frigging HEADLINE says the U.S. Declares it can hold even U.S. Citizens indefinitely. (I know, this doesn't mean they can or will try, but that they even are crazy enough to claim this--Trump's administration, remember--shows how dangerously close we are to being an overt police state. We are already a covert or "soft" police state. You're just not yet part of the cohort subject to arbitrary searches, detention, assaults and murder by the police, who are inevitably immune from rightful punishment.)

3. All persons under U.S. control are covered by U.S. laws and Constitutional protections. The Bushie fascists deposited their captives in Cuba purposely to avoid the reach of the Constitution and U.S. law, but the Supreme Court educated them as to their woefully incorrect assumptions.)

Trump has done this before, and never learns. Nobody forced Trump to say that he had never met her before. It was like Trump denying knowledge of the journalist Serge Kovaleski, afflicted with arthrogryposis.

There were a hundred different ways for Trump to respond, perhaps some of them truthful. Trump could have said it didn't happen, however he may have wanted to say it.

But no. Trump does the Trumpy thing, of declaring that he never met her. When he clearly has met her. Proving nothing so much as that the truth, and accurate details, mean nothing to Trump.

Trump is a lying sack of shit.

There's a difference, and while my presumption is that you'd be intelligent enough to understand that, you now have me wondering.

Michael K said...

Maybe a bit more on why Trump did not go ahead with a kinetic attack.

Iran’s targeting efforts in this area became notably more sophisticated in recent years, according to the former intelligence official. Cruder past efforts — featuring profile pictures of women in bikinis, who would immediately ask U.S. military personnel for information on when they were coming to port — gave way to a subtler, more time-consuming approach. The Iranians employed pictures of attractive, but fully clothed, women who would strike up online conversations with American servicemen over weeks, developing the fictitious relationships in order to nudge them into volunteering the desired intelligence.

How they got the intelligence

On Thursday evening, U.S. Cyber Command launched a retaliatory digital strike against an Iranian spy group that supported last week’s limpet mine attacks on commercial ships, according to two former intelligence officials.

The group, which has ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, has over the past several years digitally tracked and targeted military and civilian ships passing through the economically important Strait of Hormuz, through which pass 17.4 million barrels of oil per day. Those capabilities, which have advanced over time, enabled attacks on vessels in the region for several years.

Though sources declined to provide any further details of the retaliatory cyber operation, the response highlights how the Persian Gulf has become a staging ground for escalating digital — as well as conventional — conflict, with both the United States and Iran trying to get the upper hand with cyber capabilities.

"Never met her", means exactly the same as, "don't know her". depending on the context, circumstances, and speech patterns of the person talking.

Colloquial, Characteristic of or appropriate to the spoken language or to writing that seeks the effect of speech; informal.

It's called casual conversation. We all do it. Ask 100 people and I bet under the right conditions 80% would use the two terms interchangeably.

For a lawyer that I have called out numerous times for getting legal concepts wrong, or backwards, typing carelessly, being inarticulate, banging on about this is crazy talk.

stephen cooper said...

Actually lots of people could have interesting stories about famous people they met and then forgot they met ...
the problem is if you forgot you met them you can't tell the story.

I have a friend whose boyfriend had a long conversation with Mick Jagger at a post-show Broadway party in the early 70s - my friend's boyfriend was a big musical theater fan - and after the conversation, but at the same party, he told someone else that "that guy with the British accent really gets music" and the person he talked to says " don't you know you were talking to Mick Jagger" he said he didn't, he had heard the name but did not know what he looked like

back in the 1970s (or the 1950s, there is not that big a difference from where we now stand) I Vaguely Remember talking to several people in the British military who I later found out were legendary in the United Kingdom, but I forget their names, and once in a bookstore in Bellport I stood in line behind a novelist who has apparently sold tens and tens of millions of novels and I patiently waited while she asked the young lady at the cashier what she wanted to do in life - the cashier, who did not recognize the novelist, said well I want to get married some day but right now I am interested in philosophy and philosophical experiences and studying literature - the story gets a little complicated here - the best selling author looked at me for a moment (hoping that I would be a handsome young man whom she could use as an example) (apparently I wasn't) and then she looked away from me and back at the cashier and said "no, really, you won't always think that way, all that matters is love .... the love of a man for a woman, the love of a woman for a man" and then she explained that she had sold tens of millions of romance novels (well she did not explain it quite that way).

It was not easy for me to be the next customer in line. I was not well dressed that day, and had not been working out lately.
She (the lovely young cashier) seemed lost in thought, and did not really look at me the way most people look at me (I have a very straightforward and kind-hearted look in real life, and most people look at me with at least some recognition of that .....)

The cashier was, in fact, cute, and I am certain that she has encountered much love in her life, and she probably eventually heeded the advice of the world-famous novelist. But I really do forget the name of the novelist who had sold tens of millions of books.

True story.

She was very very nice, it was quite a performance, particularly since I am certain she knew that the cashier had no idea who she was, and the famous author probably knew that the beautiful young cashier just thought she was talking to some old lady who liked to talk about Love and Romance ---- and by the way even then I agreed with her completely, although I am Catholic by faith I am Mormon at heart there is nothing more important than being a good husband or a good wife, and of course also a good parent, that is, imprimis, the way most of us live life as best we can
