So I'm having a debate with an old friend who is a DNC operative, and as near as I can tell an intelligent guy, and he thinks that as strategy, Biden should veer more left. I tried to tell him that's not the correct strategy.

What is it that would keep a Guatemalan from getting a 3-month visa to Mexico and then crossing the US border or presenting himself for asylum at a border crossing?

Mexico not giving him a visa.

Yeah Chuck. We can always TRUST the NYT to report everything about Trump OBJECTIVELY.

Do they have a NAMED SOURCE for their Info? Or it based on the usual "Sources close to the White House"?

Tell us all about it. 'Cause we know the NYT and you DON'T have an agenda.

@OriginalMike: It appears that a 180-day tourist visa for Mexico can be had for free by Guatemalans upon presentation of proper documents. Visas are apparently also easy to get for students and business travelers from Guatemala.

I can't imagine Mexico will want to keep Guatemalans from visiting, studying or doing business in Mexico! So, to get to the US-Mexico border, all a Guatemalan needs is a passport or driver's license, a return bus ticket and a lift to the US border.

narciso said...

They wouldn't even let them cross till five years ago. Then daca and dapa proved an incentive

Yeah but now instead of getting the golden ticket of being released into the U.S., he'll be sent back to Mexico to wait for his hearing.

Why would a lifelong Republican believe the NYT, let alone cite them?

Does the NYT have a history of lying about the president in order to weaken him?

Are the MSM, Democratic Party and GOP Establishment desperate to deny Trump any victory ever?

Conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos has been named the grand marshal for Boston’s “Straight Pride” parade and he couldn’t be happier.
Brad Pitt declined.

Then perhaps the Mexicans need to stop granting so many visas to Guatemalans. Like I wrote on a previous thread, what Mexico has done to date is close to an act of war, and Obrador is on record advocating for such treatment of the US border.

Getting her to agree again, without negative incentive, would have been worthless.

The childless harridans at the NYT lack reason.

The article cites "officials from both countries familiar with the negotiations." More anonymous sources with an axe to grind. The NY Times is killing journalism.

The key detail is the sending back of the asylum seekers from Central America to Mexico. If had to choose between staying in Mexico and Guatemala, as a Guatemalan, what would you choose to do? Right now, they if they can step on US soil, they pretty much can't be deported.

So Mexico agreed to MOST of the details of the negotiations that Trump is claiming were details of the negotiations before the tariff threat? The rest of the details of the negotiations were agreed to after the tarriff threat then.

Are you making a case for the brilliant negotiationing tactics of the Trump administration? That's not your usual MO around here Chuck.

So @rcocean demands a named source from the NY Times because we cannot trust them.

But despite the thousand and thousands of out-and-out lies attributed to The Donald - we can trust everything he tells us? What reason would he have to lie about his effort to take our economy hostage in the service of white supremacy? So he announced more tariffs on Mexico unless more action begins to prevent refugees from legally seeking asylum here.

The answer, of course, is his predictable ignorance as to the consequences affecting American citizens - already bad and he is making it worse. After all the saber-rattling, the press pointed out that Mexico had already agreed (months ago) to hold asylum-seeking refugees in Mexico until they could be processed at the U.S immigration centers - sometimes taking months. And no, Mexico denies it agreed to buy more American farm commodities as part of their earlier deal with us - because Trump imagines a scenario he believes will make Trumsters salivate and then promptly forgets it wasn't real.

This is not science, it is a "just so" story.
Science is a means of of observing and explaining phenomenon in the natural world.
Climate science is a means of fitting observed phenomenon into a hypothesis.

Agreement and compliance are two different things, aren't they, LLR Chuck?

When President Trump speaks of agreements he uses the word as businessmen understand it, which is the common sense meaning and not what diplomats often mean by agreement. Diplomacy is often steeped in euphemisms like agreement in principle, which is used to placate an aggrieved foreign power without doing anything to resolve the issue. In other words, that sort of "agreement" is just bullshit. If I agree to buy your car for twice what it's worth, it's just bullshit until I put the money on the table. Those agreements cited by NYT were also bullshit until thousands of armed Mexican troops turned back illegals trying to cross the border. Assuming you're the lawyer you claim to be you know that, else you're not a competent litigator. The editors of NYT know that as well, but they're devoted to publishing half-truths, are they not? What about you, Chuck? Are half-truths you're specialty as well?

It was Trump's credibility that gave Mexico a compelling incentive to comply.

BTW, Sidney Blumenthal was paid by the Clinton Foundation $10K a month. He was the one behind “We came! We saw! He died!” Hillary would have been better advised to pay 10K a month to him to stay away from her.

Powerline is now an Amazon affiliate too:

"As our advertising revenue has dropped precipitously for reasons that remain mysterious–I suspect foul play by liberals–we are looking for additional ways to make a (very) modest income from this site."

Here's why:

1) you apparently don't read your own comments, so readers feel a wall between you and them.
2) you used Facebook as the ONLY form of comment for a long time, which is like limiting your feedback to readers of WaPo and the NYTs
3) you always smelled a little too GOP Establishment. Country club Republicans out of touch with "those aren't our people, dear".
4) you enabled Paul's eyerolling Never Trumpism, when even RedState recognized they didn't need 42 back up punters all saying what we could get from MSNBC
5) you let Paul ban too many people (waves to Paul) for their sharp criticism of how almost EVERY article he wrote found a way to whine about Trump

But hey, don't listen to me. Don't read this. I'm just the customer explaining why your widget doesn't work in practice as well as you claim. I was only a daily fan since the day you helped take Dan Rather down, until about two years ago when you started to sound very similar to the traitor cucks over at NRO and the Bulwark.
