"There is no pressing national security threat — no invasion of murderers, drug cartels or terrorists. No matter how often Mr. Trump delivers such warnings, they bear little resemblance to the truth. But as record numbers of Central American families flee violence and poverty in their homelands, they are overwhelming United States border systems, fueling a humanitarian crisis of overcrowding, disease and chaos. The Border Patrol is now averaging 1,200 daily arrests, with many migrants arriving exhausted and sick. Last week, a teenage boy from Guatemala died in government custody, the third death of a minor since December. As resources are strained and the system buckles, the misery grows. Something needs to be done. Soon. Unfortunately, political gamesmanship once again threatens to hold up desperately needed resources.... Both sides need to dial back the fighting words, resist the temptation to finger-point and find a creative way through this minefield."

Mexifornia is here. And Trump doesn’t speak Spanish and neither do we. But the numbers Soros/Obama have flowing in now will require Spanish be the only language. Si.
In other words, let 'em in. But it seems the blessed Sanctuary Cities are in no further need of further additions to our glorious Diversity.
If the NYT wants to argue for open borders, then argue for open borders.
Otherwise, it is hard to avoid concluding that the left is pathologically passive aggressive. Well, except, of course, when it is aggressive aggressive.
Unfortunately, political gamesmanship once again threatens to hold up desperately needed resources.... Both sides need to dial back the fighting words, resist the temptation to finger-point and find a creative way through this minefield.
Says the group encouraging the refugees because it gives them the opportunity for finger pointing.
Send them home.
All but a white flag because, you know, Trump.
It's no longer Mexifornia. It's Hondurafornia, and Nicaraguafornia, and Guatemalafornia. What a great idea: whenever malevolent socialists fuck up their countries, it's our duty to care for Les Miserables they create.
The leftists just hate our country and the people in it.
The NYTs is owned by a Mexican billionaire.
It prints the words he wants written. Nothing more or less.
How that must have pained the NY Times publisher and editors.
NYT gritting its teeth: Can't. give. bad. orange. man. credit. for border!
Sounds like an argument for a wall.
The stupid law requiring that anyone stepping one foot across our border be entitled to an asylum hearing [years down the road] and then released pending the 'hearing' must be overturned. And yes, we do need a wall, as well.
Obviously, if we had the wall people would not make the journey, and there would be no border crisis.
Why is that so hard to understand?
yeah.....wait until their un-vaccinated kids get mumps. They will be screaming for a wall.
"President Trump is right: There is a crisis at the southern border. Just not the one he rants about."
In this case, "right" is meant ironically. It didn't pain anybody at the Times, or cause a gritting of teeth, to write it.
Best argument for border security
Nancy and her gang of assholes will never fix this problem. They would rather have all the suffering than give Trump a win.
Seriously the NYT is inadvertently making the argument for strengthening the border in a myriad of ways, including walls. Walls are not impenetrable, and that should never be the argument for it, but walls sure slow people down.
The harder you make it for people to get across the border and the more you slow them down, the easier you make it for our border authorities to respond to illegal crossings and capture, process and deport (or grant asylum to) the illegal crossers. Strengthening the border just means making the system somewhat functional and redirecting migrants to official, legal channels. You don't need a Great Wall from the Pacific to the Gulf. You just need a defense that works.
The solution is to close off illegal entry barrier and stop accepting the well-coached asylum claims.
Of course, the crisis at the border is the problems FOR the migrants, not the problems FROM the migrants. Of course, it is up to American taxpayers, through their government, to relieve the migrants of the consequences of their self-imposed crisis. (Sarc.)
Are the leftmediaswine no longer capable of seeing the logical consequences of their phony altruism? Or perhaps they just see embracing this wave of humanity invading our country and the destruction they will wreak as a godsend for Democrat seeking to disadvantage Trump for 2020.
There is little doubt that the Democrats and their media pimps are committed to damaging the country, even irreparably, as a means of displacing Trump. I have seen nothing in politics this despicable in my lifetime.
The stupid law requiring that anyone stepping one foot across our border be entitled to an asylum hearing [years down the road] and then released pending the 'hearing' must be overturned
Is there a law? Or is it merely a ruling by the robed clerics?
Perhaps the Executive Board would like to contribute money to help this program?????
Both sides need to dial back the fighting words, resist the temptation to finger-point and find a creative way through this minefield."
Stuff like this reminds me of a summary of the complaint against Reagan in the early days of the AIDS crisis: curing AIDS is just a matter of waving a magic wand, but Reagan is being chintzy with the pixie dust.
Immediately boost the number of officials necessary to process asylum claims and quickly send home the 99.99% who don't have legitimate claims. This will end the crisis and discourage others from turning our border and citizenship into a joke.
"I live in a backward society with gangs" does not meet the traditional standard for qualifying for asylum.
When murderers, drug cartels, and terrorist want to get in the U.S., they would never use the easiest way in, which is just walking across the border. That would be illegal, and they won't break the law. Besides why would they want to come here? I can't think of a single reason.
It amazes me every single day what strange contortions and lies people will tell to avoid giving Trump credit for anything just straight up without a stupid counterfactual "but," attached.
"There is no pressing national security threat..."
The inability of goodthinkers to recognize predictable (and predicted) consequences is well-documented.
By the time we get around to the state where "what all the wise men promised has not happened, and what all the damned fools said would happen has come to pass", the prog "wise men" will have long since arranged to play dumb (even with themselves) about the connecting steps between their promises and the long-term consequences of their promises, that the damned fools had laid out for them at the time the wise men made their promises.
Excuse me while I call bull**** on the democrat propaganda outlet, even while they agree that something needs to be done. The open border democrat propaganda outlet does not see any issue with 1 MILLION illegals flooding into this country, only that they may be put out.
They could give a flying **** about the poorer people of this country that have to deal with this invasion through reduced employment, crowded schools, services and medical.
It is sickeningly elitist, self serving and snobbish.
Put Democrats heads on pikes at the Southhern Border to scare away invaders.
Effective walls would require asylum seekers to come to a gate, which could be closed, throttled, etc. NO walls allows millions to just walk over and claim asylum
Which is exactly what the open border democrat party wants.
"The leftists just hate our country and the people in it."
Leftists and LLR's. You never find one without the other.
When Demcoratics win - we lose.
The US ought to 'encourage' the 'gaming industry' to turn Guatamala, Nicaragua and Honduras into beachfront meccas ala 1950s Cuba. Local construction, a flourshing service industry and moneyed tourists would enhance the local enconomies and improve living conditions in these nations.
Hey, I've got a good idea. How about a big tall wall?!
1200 arrests per day, but how many aren't arrested? 2x? 5x? That's the real question. And, yes, it is a security threat, because we don't know how many are making it in, and how many are bad apples. If just 1% are gang members, possible terrorists, etc.
madAsHell: yeah.....wait until their un-vaccinated kids get mumps. They will be screaming for a wall.
No, they won't. They'll be screaming about how it's the fault of the racist patriarchal homophobic Republicans in the American government that every poor country in the world and illegal immigrant enclave in the U.S. doesn't have a fully-funded, effectively administered vaccination program. (While at the same time being mum on the soccer-mom anti-vaxxers, and condemning as "racist" every effort at enforcement of vaccination/public health rules.)
So once again this is a case of both sides want the same thing (to stop the "crisis" at the southern border). They just disagree about how to get there.
Sounds an awful like how both sides wanted low unemployment and low inflation. They just disagreed how to get there. Trump was obviously wrong up and until he wasn't, and the NYT needed to write an article, "The Economy That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen: Booming Jobs, Low Inflation."
How long before the NYT writes, "The Wall That Wasn't Supposed to Happen: An End to the Crisis at the Southern Border?"
What needs to happen now is maximum enforcement of E Verify and legislation (which will require a new Congress) to stiffen the terms and the penalties.
My understanding is that it is mostly a farce right now. Also, federal law to ban illegals from welfare.
Emigration reform. Planned Parenthood with or without the walls on the Southern border. Unplanned parenthood in America to counter the arguments of anti-nativists, democrats, and businesses dreaming of labor arbitrage. Also, a wall of photovoltaic panels, anchored by windmills, and defended by environmentalists. Something similar for immigration by air from social justice zones.

Oh..there you go..putting forth the obvious question about the "undocumented".
But we are told they somehow know them to be less likely to commit crime than native pop.
Who owns the NYTs again?? That's right....Carlos Slim...A Mexican business magnate, engineer, investor and philanthropist. Nothing to see here.
Who needs a wall? Why not dig a trench along the border and bury spent fuel rods from our reactors? It would solve the storage problem and anybody foolish enough to try crossing would be easy to track on a Geiger counter.
Half joking, for a friend.
"Someone else must fix the problem we've created! Preferably a Republican!"
Unknown: They could give a flying **** about the poorer people of this country that have to deal with this invasion through reduced employment, crowded schools, services and medical.
Those problems don't exist. They're just the irrational fears of The Other projected onto Brown Bodies by hysterical bigots.
The liberal elites do not have to deal with the problems everyday people have with so many illegal immigrants invading their neighborhoods.
And, I thought asylum seekers had to apply for asylum in the first country they reached, MEXICO. Americans are turning out to be first class saps to allow this horror show.
WTF!
BUILD THAT WALL!!!!!
Bagoh20 sarcs: When murderers, drug cartels, and terrorist want to get in the U.S., they would never use the easiest way in, which is just walking across the border. That would be illegal, and they won't break the law. Besides why would they want to come here? I can't think of a single reason.
No, not one. Especially not drugs. If they want to smuggle in drugs they always come through the port of entry where there are drug sniffing dogs and armed Border Patrol. The risk of getting caught makes it a lot more exciting than just walking unimpeded over the open border. Oh, and many borders are so open you can drive a truck through, eliminating the challenge altogether. ;-)

Leftists and LLR's. You never find one without the other.
The only difference is the people they are lying to.
They are all leftists, the LLR's are just more dishonest about it.
Trump has been very clear about the invasion. The dealers and traffickers are just part of the problem.
Anyway, we face an existential question: to have a border or not to have a border? To stop the invasion or not to stop the invasion?
Therefore, in 2020, we face an existential choice. Even LLRs. Even moderate Midwestern emerita law profs.
This reminds me of some writer soon after 9/11 when Bush was advocating we go to Afghanistan. The writer, I forget who, pointed out that many on the left only support wars that benefit others, not the US. The NYT will support the idea there is a border crisis, but not based on the idea that it might be bad for the US, only bad for the people trying to get here.
Even the NYTimes realizes the danger the Democrats are in on this issue. This is the first part of the retreat- providing some covering fire.
That would be Ann Coulter,
Build the Wall!
Drain the Swamp!
Lock her up!
All short and to the point. It's an unending process....
The plain fact of the matter is that simply living in a s**thole country, fearing for your life, and somehow making it to the US border are not grounds for asylum under any law. Such cases should be rejected out of hand and turned back at the border - whatever various NGO's have scripted for them to say. If this policy were implemented and publicized the flow would stop PDQ. And quote Andrew Jackson to the Ninth Circus if necessary.
Yancey @ 12:04: "...This is the first part of the retreat- providing some covering fire."
Excellent. Exactly so.
Can we speculate on the next step as the Progs conduct diversionary and screening moves to allow their main force to exit the scene of the debacle?
Better yet, can we describe a counter-counter-move, that will choke off the channel for their retreat?
"This reminds me of some writer soon after 9/11 when Bush was advocating we go to Afghanistan. The writer, I forget who, pointed out that many on the left only support wars that benefit others, not the US."
The war we started in Afghanistan didn't benefit anyone.
Why would anyone have any respect for the NY Times? I don't.
Robert Cook said...The war we started in Afghanistan didn't benefit anyone
I'm sorry, who started the war in Afghanistan?
Why on earth is any of this Trumps fault?! It is wholly and completely the fault of Congress.
"On May 7, the New York Times wrote:"
"President Trump is right: There is a crisis at the southern border....[R]ecord numbers..violence and poverty...overwhelming United States border systems...overcrowding, disease and chaos....As resources are strained and the system buckles, the misery grows. Something needs to be done. Soon...[M]inefield."
"I'm Donald Trump, and I approve this message."
We live in a world where, as poet Conrad Aiken said, "We must hear and bear the news from everywhere, infinitesimal or vast, from everywhere." And almost instantly. What that means is that poor people in South and Central America are watching CNN, or might as well be. The news from the border right now is, "Come on up. Trump's foes are holding him off. You can make it across."
If just 1% are gang members, possible terrorists, etc.
The left says that because of ~30,000 annual homicides and suicides involving firearms the government should confiscate all 270 million civilian firearms. Based on that ratio, the tolerance should be more like 0.01%.
The war we started in Afghanistan didn't benefit anyone
Mullah Omar should have thought of that before he approved the 9-11 attacks then.
The writer, I forget who, pointed out that many on the left only support wars that benefit others, not the US."
It's not quite true. They would support a war benefiting the US as long as they were directly credited. It's more accurate to note the left evaluates all political positions solely by partisanship.
Example:
The left supported economic sanctions against South Africa. This was a government opposed by all and not having sanctions created the opportunity to criticize Republicans.
The left was/is against economic sanctions in Iran and Venezuela. The left is politically allied to these governments so they oppose economic sanctions.
They know it is a losing proposition to be the "open borders" party in 2020, and so there will be subtle or maybe not so subtle attempts to shift the narrative over the next 18 months.
The result of the sanctions were to deliver south Africa, which has critical resources to the eastern bloc, hence their enthusiasm
Umkhonto du siswe was the armed wing of the ANC, Mandela was the original commander later Jacob Zuma the future warlord was chief.
There is no pressing national security threat — no invasion of murderers, drug cartels or terrorists
If you write for the New York Times then cheap hard drugs from Mexico is a benefit, not a problem. As to murderers, perhaps the editors should talk to Angel Moms for a fresh perspective. Or the parents of Kate Steinle.
They are right in that something does need to be done.

This reminds me of when the Bush administration was in front of congress warning them about the coming subprime mortgage crisis, and the Dems kept telling them there was no crisis. I'm talking about you, Barney Frank.
They were never held accountable for that avoidable and foreseeable disaster, and they probably won't be held accountable for what's coming from this becuase our press sucks.
Fellow stepped down on corruption charges in 2009
If you write for the New York Times then cheap hard drugs from Mexico is a benefit,
I still wonder if the drug cartels are funding Democrat opposition to the wall.
The complaint seen threw NYT's eyes is that we cannot provide enough instant schools, hospitals, dentists, food stamps, and Catholic Priest distributed free resettlement transportation vouchers to the interior along with free housing vouchers to service our new citizens. If Puerto Rico got a quick $90 billion, where is the border communities loot?
the Dems kept telling them there was no crisis. I'm talking about you, Barney Frank.
Maxine was there too. I had video of it on my blog but the video has disappeared.
Well there was a contributor David carr who was strung out on heroin.
Both sides need to dial back the fighting words, resist the temptation to finger-point and find a creative way through this minefield."
Minefield?
Isn't that what they call a gaff?
Nobody has to start a war in Afghanistan - you just show up and join in.
Nobody ends a war in Afghanistan - you just give up and leave.
I get the impression they like it - religion of peace and all.
"I still wonder if the drug cartels are funding Democrat opposition to the wall."
The cartels are flush with cash, we all know which party they prefer in power, and keeping the border open is really important to their business, so to think they are not contributors to the DNC in some way would be naive. Probably numerous avenues of help are provided: voters, money, muscle, threats. They got 'em all.

The crisis at the border is in the middle of the bridge, where collateral damage progresses in both directions. One way through normalization of immigration reform. Another way through avoidance of emigration reform. Labor arbitrage, democratic leverage, and planned parenthood.
Three stages of every outside the beltway strong by the NYT:
1. There is no problem, Trump is lying.
2. There is a problem, but Trump got everything wrong.
3. We must elect a Democrat because Trump can't solve the problem!

Last week, a teenage boy from Guatemala died in government custody, the third death of a minor since December.

Cook nails it, as usual!
Who built the planes? WE DID!
Who produced the jet fuel? WE DID!
Who created the microsoft flight simulators? WE DID!
IF ALL Americans had voluntarily committed suicide, then the war (that WE STARTED) never would have had to take place
Right Cook? Everything IN THE WORLD is America's fault; right? All people are good, except for Americans, who are EVIL!
Right Cook?
Yes, we have to scoop up the garbage from Occupy Border.
Is there any doubt our elected officials despise us? Even unambiguously want us dead?
My next door neighbor was carted away last week. An illegal, serial, child and possibly adult rapist, turns out.
He has a fairly substantial record in just two counties around here -- I'm sure he has more of a record elsewhere, but I gathered only locally. All sorts of jurisdictions are making it increasingly difficult to find criminal records online -- I can't do the blogging about recidivists I used to do.
This guy has several driving without a license arrests and child abuse/dv felony charges. All violence charges dropped or reduced to misdemeanors. No consequences for all the driving infractions. And he obviously has no auto insurance.
So while my husband and I pay out the ass for uninsured driver, our neighbor is anally raping children while driving with no license. And my (conservative) former state rep up the road, Kevin Tanner, argued with me that we don't have problems with illegal immigrants in this area. Bullshit: most of my neighbors are illegal immigrants. How do I know? I used to run work crews. I did refugee and immigrant placement when I was still a sucker. I know what I'm talking about.
Given my history, this rapist-neighbor thing is really . . . steaming me. I also can't find out the details of his crimes, and the DA has refused to answer questions, including whether he will be released on bond. And this guy has come down the road onto our property and talked to me, and I am alone here in the woods isolated from anyone else a good bit of the time.
So what do I do? Carry my gun when I'm outside because my elected officials will not enforce the law? Stop sleeping? It took me years to sleep after the last time. This is the reality of illegal immigration/crime, for people not upper-class-Democrat-liberal enough to protect themselves from the consequences of upper-class-Democrat policies.
"Last week, a teenage boy from Guatemala died in government custody, the third death of a minor since December."
Amplifying Kevin's 2:20pm comment -
Assuming they included December (otherwise they would have said "this year"), that's three deaths out of over 180,000 arrests. Take away "last week" and the deaths drop to two. So what is it? A normal death rate out of a large population under considerable physical stress of unknown though probably less than optimal health. Or an outsized human tragedy to be laid at the Administration's doorstep.
Paraphrasing Stalin, 3 deaths are a tragedy, hundreds of gang shootings and murders are a statistic.
Robert Cook said...

It wasn't supposed to.
War isn't supposed to be for benefit.
After we win there are benefits. But we weren't allowed to win.
On purpose.
I think there were some benefitters in the situation though. I don't much like them.
Own asks: Better yet, can we describe a counter-counter-move, that will choke off the channel for their retreat?
Yes. Let's send all these migrants to sanctuary cities and states before they have a chance to rescind their law.
Just a reminder - Cook referred to our boys as "parasites" for serving in the military during what he calls "peacetime". He has no idea what he is talking about.
Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist group Al-Qaeda, was killed in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, shortly after 1:00 am PKT (20:00 UTC, May 1) by United States Navy SEALs of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six). - Wiki
He probably thinks we projected force into Pakistan via teleportation. When we weren't sucking off the gov teat of course.
It is not the geography of the US that makes us rich, it is our political system and our people. The countries where the immigrants are coming screwed up their own country and now want to come here...why? Fix your own country. No place in South America is a desert. Life could be good there. Argentina was once one of the richest countries till they elected Peron (etc corruption). Venezuela had it all and threw it away by electing a despot. Mexico should be a pretty good place--we certainly send them enough $. Brazil has so much beauty and natural resources--again, corruption and bad government. None of this is our fault.

They should have been colonized by the British instead of the French and Spanish, etc.
I'm not going to read the whole thing, but I agree with the entire quote. Including the "both sides need to dial back the fighting words". That "dialing back" would include Congress spending time on actually legislating immigration law instead of dumpster diving for Trump's tax returns.
If things are that bad in Honduras and Guatemala, etc., then what needs to be done is military intervention by the international community. They need to send armies in those places and overthrow the leaders and put a bunch of people on trial for crimes against humanity for creating such hell-holes.
Achilles -- There was nothing to win in Afghanistan. There's no standard for "win" that isn't fantasy. Saying "we weren't allowed to win" is like saying "we weren't allowed unicorns".

You don't like the word "started"?
Would "restarted" be better?
How about the war we augmented at tremendous cost and no benefit in Afghanistan?
