Your tears are delicious.

It is panic time in DC. All of your heroes are stuttering and stammering their way through press conferences. Pelosi was a drolling wreck and couldn't even count to 3.

Samantha Power is going to pleading the 5th very soon. She illegally unmasked hundreds of citizens who "inadvertently" had their communications surveilled by the NSA.

I wonder if she will go to jail quietly or rat on Obama?

What do you think she will do?

It is fun watching you Russia hoaxers squeal and sputter.

Not really that interesting, since this was an interview of Strzok after his interview of Flynn. It does indicate that this was McCabe’s idea, and that DAD Yates, and maybe DD Comey weren’t happy with it having been done, that McCabe had instructed the two agents not to tell Flynn that he could be prosecuted for lying (he had earlier advised Flynn that he didn’t need a lawyer present), and that Flynn seemed to not be lying to them. It was, by this document, very much a set up, of the National Security Advisor, at the White House, which is likely why DAG (and acting AG) Yates was troubled by it.

I am not so sure. This has most of the trappings of a pretty standard DC scandal. One of the ways the Establishment operates is by defining the boundaries of acceptable discourse and then allowing a great deal of debate and argument within those boundaries. The people who truly have power in this country are not worried about this scandal, because either way their power will be unaffected. It does not matter to these people which party controls which branches of governments, because the political parties are largely subservient to their interests.

Russiagate and this are wonderful Establishment-approved scandals. They pose no real challenge to the power structure, and they eat up a tremendous amount of media and intellectual real estate, thus allowing the Establishment to carry on pursuing its agenda discreetly behind the scenes. Obsessing over characters like Nancy Pelosi is a distraction. The Establishment gets its way no matter who is in that position.

There will always be a segment of the population who believe that Trump was put in the White House by Russia and is a Putin agent. It's an absurd belief, but it is impervious to logic and reasoning. Similarly, there are people who will always believe that Bush cooked up 9/11 for Halliburton and Oil and that Obama was a Muslim Brotherhood agent and the "most left-wing" president ever. These are all absurdities. Bush, Obama, and Pelosi are all Establishment-approved figures.

I voted for Trump because I thought he could potentially be a monkey wrench in the system. I was well aware of his personal faults but thought he had decent instincts and did seem to be running out of some (admittedly perverse form) of noblesse oblige. Why I have been largely disappointed in Trump is because I see him as being largely subsumed by the Establishment. Jared Kushner exerts a great deal of influence on Trump's agenda, and it does not get much more Establishment than Jared. Pompeo and Bolton are busily repeating all the foolish mistakes of the Bush administration's first term. I'm still holding out a modicum of hope on immigration, but I am prepared to be disappointed.

@narciso:

Bannon and Miller were certainly among the brain trusts of Trumpism. I honestly believe that Trump does have not much of a coherent political or worldview and relies largely on instincts and gut feelings. But since he was so unbeholden to GOP Inc orthodoxy, he was able to navigate the path people like Bannon and Miller laid out for him. Instead of indulging in warmed over GOP Inc talking points about free market economics and peace through strength militarism, Trump championed economic nationalism, immigration restriction, and less foreign interventionism. It was these policies, not Trump's sleazy personal life or crass manner, that truly worried the Establishment. And they have worked tirelessly to undermine them, with some decent measure of success, since November 9th, 2016.

Unlike Gingrich, Bannon is actually quite smart. Gingrich's reputation as a member of the conservative intelligentsia has always baffled me.

Bannon was likely too large a personality to be able to peacefully coexist in the Trump White House. Beware people who make the move from Wall Street to Hollywood. That said, while I like a lot of Bannon's point of view, his China/clash of civilizations/Thucydides trap schtick is not helpful. Like folks like Robert Kagan and Victor Davis Hanson, Bannon is blinded by a romantic obsession over great power dynamics.

J. Farmer said...

@narciso:

That, of course, is the million dollar question. Trump was a good option since he was about as outside the traditional political establishment as you could hope for in a potential candidate. But Trump simply lacks the skills and knowledge depth to see it through implementation stage. Trump's reputation as a masterful strategist and negotiator seems to me little more than the result of a successful branding campaign, rather than an honest assessment of reality.
