"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
Said President Obama.
"We love this slate because it spans so many different interests and experiences, yet it’s all woven together with stories that are relevant to our daily lives. We think there’s something here for everyone — moms and dads, curious kids and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day. We can’t wait to see these projects come to life — and the conversations they’ll generate."
Said Michelle Obama.
According to "Barack and Michelle Obama Set Expansive Film and TV Slate at Netflix" in Hollywood Reporter.
I don't know. I feel like I'm hearing 2 robots talk. Come on. Is that really them? So eerie!
I'm reading about the 7 projects. One is about "remarkable people whose deaths were not reported by" The New York Times. Another, called "Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents" is about "the story of our food." Another "will aim to portray the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation."
I don't have Netflix, but you never know what might push me over the edge and make me subscribe — unheralded work of everyday heroes, people whose deaths were not reported, our food...

Something else to ignore on Netflix.
OK, I take back what I said about Stacey Abrams; I'd rather listen to her than the utterly clueless Sanctimony Twins any day.
When the word “conversations” appears...run the other way. I do not want one of their conversations.
Get your democratic propaganda.
Sounds humorless and boring.
All the conversational flow will be in one direction. We saw this in the Oval Office for 8 years. Who needs more?
However, if Michelle breaks and starts yelling at some teenage mother with three kids by different fathers, "HOW COULD YOU BE SO STUPID!!??!", that will be must-see TV.
Sounds humorless and boring.
Rather like a Chuck comment.
"Is that really them?"
You mean, you think they sound any different than before? You mean, you expected anything else from the tiresome twosome?
"will aim to portray the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation". So there will be at least episode about the Deep State.
Crash and burn.
I'm sure there will be a program on Michelle's diet choices for school kids.
". . . the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government. . .
Nope.
I'd like to hear Hillary read this in her Barak and Michelle voices.
Sounds like NPR.
I don’t know where the idiom comes from, but when my Dad said “you’re telling stories”, that meant we were lying.
Barack Obama has two real skills (1) looking good in a suit and (2) spinning a line of bullshit. That’s it. So “telling stories” and getting paid megabucks to do it is perfectly synergistic.
What disproportionate amount of money is being funneled to them so their name is attached to this project? A million? $10 Million?
I thought there were nine projects: Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud and Treachery
Must be a different series.
Speaking of spewing BS, a Trump/Biden contest will be one for the ages. Biden doesn't even have a nodding acquaintance with the truth, and Trump is always thinking,"Will they believe it? It's kinda believable. I'd believe it."
We have a lot to look forward to.
7 projects
The "projects" sound like time-fillers for middle-school teachers to stick in a DVD player while they take a smoke break.
Vegetable for life, the story of a healthy diet.
"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
IOW, White man bad. Republicans even worse.
ABC After school specials for 2019.
"Let's Move!"
Will aim to portray the importance of unheralded work done by your large intestine working cooperatively with your butt hole.
I think I’ rather watch a very special episode of Blossom than any one of these.
I clicked through and I didn't see "Frankenstein, Part II" as one of the feature movies.
As I have dipped my toe into the screenwriting world, it is bizarre to me see calls for scripts about identity politics and such. Sometimes they want to know the intersectional identity of the writer and director.
If I made Frankenstein trans, maybe I could sell it.
Bay, daviddbegley@gmail.com. 95 pages.
Cool.
I am bookmarking that story with the titles of Obama's propaganda productions so I can avoid those on Netflix. There are already enough productions pretending to be entertainment but which are only trying lecture me.
If I want a lecture, I'll argue with my husband :-)
Thanks.
We don't have Netflix. This isn't going to make me change that.
In fact, I almost wish we did just so I could drop it.
Lectures and agitprop you pay for every month!
Got any stories about how conservatives are misunderstood by the left? Didn’t think so.
Wake me up when The Crown or Stranger Things comes back
Just as long as there is lots of diversity and inclusion it doesn't matter what the plot is.
If Netflix were to produce an updated version of The Wire, with Obama starring as Omar, the gay gangster, who robs drug dealers in Baltimore, then, Yes, I would watch it.
I saw a very recent article about how Baltimore had failed so extremely and for so long, that I thought back to The Wire (what 20 years ago?) and how it foretold these issues.
But on topic: these proposals sound so anodyne, I can't imagine anyone will actually watch them, except "we must watch to support B and M" crowd -- people who buy the right books but never read them. The problem with TV is you need to spend time.
lots of diversity and inclusion
Yes, black, white, brown, yellow, red, green, blue, and orange, too. Let's raise a cup of joe to toast the corpsemen in the rarefied airs of higher ground.
I wonder if this is the Obama's equivalent of the Clinton Foundation, i.e. a corporate shell that's useful as a money laundry & conduit between the wealthy & the politically connected.
Hey, it's not like the Obamas can be blamed for introducing dicey accounting into the movie industry!
Ann, why do you still pay attention to those two retreads? Wasn't 8 years of vacuous, yet divisive, bullshit enough for you?
The Narrative's the thing. Hamlet said that. And like Hamlet, Obama wants to kill the Republic to get his revenge. That's what every Marxist does.
Netflix has some binge watch series programing, but Amazon Prime has the better ones.
I do have Netflix, and I find I watch it less and less. Throwing all this development money at the Obamas makes me want to drop it. Given their recent price increase, I'll give it serious consideration.
This will be exciting.
Unheralded heroes that guide our government. Like Ted, at the DMV.
Didn't fill out your spouse's eye color on page 4?
Ted will patiently tell you why it's absolutely imperative for a smooth functioning government to have this very important information.
Ted, you motherfucking hero.
Sounds like the exact opposite of John Singleton's Baby Boy...
They aren't making the Netflix content for blacks though, are they? Will enough white woke liberals subscribe, or put their money toward better causes? The upcoming John Singleton's?
A series of #woke After School Specials. How predictable!
The bottom has dropped out at Oprah.
Why are the Obama's getting in the social-justice entertainment game so late??
"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
Netflix is clearly betting otherwise but I don't think the available market for this sort of "content" is very big. At the risk of going all Pauline Kael I'll say that the people I know, who are quite varied in their age, race, class, and politics demo, are more interested in spending their entertainment hours on GOT, Housewives, Next Top Model, DWTS, Widow, and a long list of other escapist shows.
They should have pitched and run this on PBS, that demo would eat this shit up.
It's the ABC Afterschool Special all over again.
Credit to rcocean who nailed the ABC Afterschool Special comparison first.
There is nothing that will make me take Netflix. Be STRONG, Ann!
Trump is always thinking, "Will they believe it? It's kinda believable. I'd believe it."
Bingo!
"we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
He left out "indoctrinate".
...unheralded work of everyday heroes, people whose deaths were not reported...
Jerrie Mock was a frumpy housewife from flyover country, literally, and certainly wasn't glamorous like Amelia. I'm guessing the story of this everyday hero, who's death was barely reported, will not be told on Netflix.
I meant "not an everyday hero".
"Storytelling" ?? That's what Fake News is for.
will aim to portray the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation"
We already had something kinda like this called “Dirty Jobs” with Mike Rowe. THOSE are real heroes of our society.
Government peckerheads aren’t. This program will definitely suck suck suck.
Mike Rowe has more common sense and manliness in his ear hair than the entire ameba like bunch government parasites hold high.
Is that why Netflix raised their price?
"Sounds like NPR."
So boring. Like every year the local paper runs a long earnest thumbsucker about sad Brown Peoples on the reservations.
No one says did you see that story, no letters to the editor about it. Another year goes by, another thumbsucker.
Maybe it's just a senior project at the J school
"Will generate Conversations"
When has the liberal/Left EVER wanted to have a real honest "conversation" about anything?
LOL. "Conversation" is Commie speak for: "We talk - you listen."
Since I retired, I'm and every other day hero.
When the Obamas are Explaining the World, any exit is an appropriate exit.
If Obama does not go to jail for spying on Trump this country no longer has the rule of law.
Part of the social contract in this country is that we are all treated equally under the law.
Obama conspired with foreign intelligence agents to undermine and depose a legally elected president.
It is time for our country to uphold that social contract.
Who doesn't want to see a tv show about broccoli? But I suppose they'll cater to the women and feature a lot of shows about Brussel sprouts. Sob stories about these little baby cabbages ripped from their bassinets in order to slate the appetites of rich white people.
Sounds predictably tiresome, but...ka-ching! I bet the Obamas even surpass Hillary when it comes to hoovering wonga from Leftist suckers.
A better bet: https://www.wpr.org/programs/higher-ground
So netflix jacks up their prices and then has these two traitorous self-righteous pricks on their station.
Ann you were thinking about what might push you to subscribe, I have been thinking about what would push me to un-subscribe. I think they have found it.
We watch much more on amazon than netflix.
"If Obama does not go to jail for spying on Trump this country no longer has the rule of law."
Then it never has. Presidents don't go to jail. Still, a little disgracing would be entertaining.
Henry: Credit to rcocean who nailed the ABC Afterschool Special comparison first.
Oops, how did I miss that? Deleted my redundant comment. Hate when I do that.
Maybe it will be as good as the new Twilight Zone.
That's a low bar a snake can slither under.

We have never had a clear traitor as President.
A lot of assholes and idiots but they were in general loyal to the country. You can debate Billy Clinton. He sold the Chinese a lot of really nice missile technology.
But Obama was clearly conspiring with 5 Eyes partners to spy on US citizens. His administration lied to the FISC using material purchased from and built in coordination with an MI6 agent who got his material from Ukraine. They used the FISA warrant on Carter Page, which was upgraded to a level I asset at the request of Rosenstein himself, to spy on everyone in the trump campaign.
I am particularly interested in what Rosenstein and Yates put in that request to promote Page from a t level 7 asset to a level 1 asset. There are clear rules for that kind of escalation. You can’t just do it and the judge had to be in on it.
"Sounds like NPR."
According to ET, Barry is going to share his recipe for Schwetty Balls in the third episode, and it is to be broadcast during the holiday season.
Here's the other show I thought about:
I was tired of writing for shows where there was always a shoot-out in the last act and somebody was killed.... You really couldn’t talk about anything you cared to talk about. It seemed to me that perhaps if I wanted to talk about sex, religion, politics, make some comments against Vietnam, and so on, that if I had similar situations involving these subjects happening on other planets to little green people, indeed it might get by, and it did.
Name that producer.
What about Julia? Is she still sucking gov cock for bennies?
They sure kicked her to the curb quickly. Stupid white girl.
If my death wasn't reported, did my life make a sound? On Netflix?
Teen Suicide Spiked After Debut Of Netflix's '13 Reasons Why,' Study Says.
Can Higher Ground be more diverse?
Went 8 years with the mute button on, not turning it off now.
Hard to believe it was just seven years ago that jackass was claiming the biggest flaw in his presidency was he didn't tell enough stories.
If you can put up with subtitles (or the dreaded dubbing), Netflix has interesting shows from other lands.
WalMart is getting into the content-creation game as well with Vudu.
My close friend works at MGM and put this deal together.
"Unsung heroes guiding our government" = already done. It was called Yes Minister. Full marks if the Obamas have a very dark sense of humour and are willing to update the series to 2010s America.
Solar Panel subsidy in Ep3
Doctors aren't for Keeping in Ep9
That Wacky Lois from the IRS in Ep14
Very bad Obama’s. Totally not human.
Name that producer.
Roddenberry? Some of his shows were certainly tedious.
Bull dung by the bargeload. That's what the Obamas--Barry and Mooch---deliver.
Been thinking of getting Netflix, but not to get stuff like this. Blechhh.
The Simpsons did it....
Maybe it's nostalgia, or a craving for sermons from those who've given up traditional religion, I don't know, but some people seem to crave new versions of the "After School Special". Even complex nuanced funny raunchy shows like Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth seem compelled to spend an episode or two each season doing ham fisted message stories. And they get lots of critical praise for it. I guess it's similar to the big Oscar bait pictures like Green Book or Crash, which are much sillier ways to spend your time than watching the latest Avengers picture if you ask me.
Why would Netflix want to destroy itself pandering to grifters, Obozo and Moochelle? Odd that Dem presidents become wealthy trading on their time in office.
I thought the Obamas were a pretty swell first couple. The kids were adorable. A fine first family they were. And this seems like a presidential sort of venture. Ok, maybe they're a bit swell-headed letting people throw money at them for their huge cultural insight but they're Harvard lawyers, whaddayagonna do.
This will be fun. The story lines described in the article are about as compelling as a double serving of tomato aspic.
Let’s let the market decide. Will the dogs eat the dog food? We shall see.
Will they post salaries and benefits so we can see what multiple of the line-actor vs Obama's?
by everyday heroes guiding our government
Useful work should be a minimal requirement to be considered a hero. It's disgusting the way petty tyrants think of themselves.
Stuttering idiot.
It may be that the dollar amount of the Obama/Netflix deal has been reported somewhere, but my quick google search didn't find that number. I did see a reminder that Penguin Random House paid Barack and Michelle a flat $65 million for their yet-to-be-published His & Her memoirs, so they've got that going for them. I'm sure the Netflix deal is also in the tens of millions, but most likely less than than Penguin Random House.
Whatever the number is, as far as I'm concerned, it is that many million additional reasons not to subscribe to Netflix.
"everyday heroes guiding our government "
Its about time someone made "The Norman Borlaug Story"
An unusual subject (growing wheat?) but this could be made very interesting.
"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights,
Oh, good, more of Obama's racial healing. Never gets old.
Anon: "Why are the Obama's getting in the social-justice entertainment game so late??"
Leading from behind again...
FM: "Oh, good, more of Obama's racial healing. Never gets old."
You can bet LLR Chuck has already programmed his DVR to capture all of obamas "magnificent" offerings.
Not stories. It’s always narratives.
This is exactly as they've sounded since entering public life: heavily massaged, focus-grouped language and phrasing, delivered with that smiling blandness that neither threatens nor interests anyone.
This is what most politicians sounded like before Trump. How quickly we forget - or wish we'd never known.

Yes. That would be a great story. Borlaug is one of the most important figures of the last century, but most people don’t know who he was.
Which is owned by bertlesman which is an appendage of the German state, with Susan rice also getting a production slot. Hastings the founder of netflixs was clintoms FCC chair.
"Whatever the number is, as far as I'm concerned, it is that many million additional reasons not to subscribe to Netflix."
Not to worry, Netflix. Althouse is subscribing.
Figure his will Netflix treat this:

Sounds earnest, and pious, and hortatory. Gawd offal.
"portray the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government"
The first show will be about the unheralded hero guiding our government William Barr.
What?
No series on the government-teat-sucking Julia?
What a rip off!
Cripes. The Candy Hearts in the prior post are doing a run-through. I never thought before about how much BHO looks like that blue Candy Heart.
You know it's a good day when you discover your on the same wavelength as Fen. Kudos, brother!
"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”
Because no one talks enough about race in America.
The evidence suggests that Obama ran for president for the sole purpose of bcoming an ex-president.
Will Barack Run for Pope or for Caliph? "Why not both", laughed Valerie. "Ha, ha," laughed Michelle. They went into the next room and told Barack the joke. Barack laughed. "Ha, ha," laughed Barack. Then Michelle said to Barack "Maybe you are the One that is the Two that is the One." "Ha, ha," laughed Barack, "It is good to have these national conversations." "Ha, ha, it is as good as unsung broccoli." said Valerie. "Ha, ha" laughed Barack. "That'll be one million, Netflix". Then they all laughed some more. And no wonder.
Michael the magnificent wrote:
"No series on the government-teat-sucking Julia?"
On the contrary, every episode will be about Julia.
Julia will meet a nice man, but sadly break up with him because he cannot provide the financial -- and emotional -- security of her relationship with her social worker.
Julia will decide to have another child, with help from a government-supplied artificial insemination program. The child will be diagnosed in the womb as a physical monster, and she chooses a government supplied abortion "artist" to kill the child as it exits the birth canal.
Julia is wounded (superficially) in a terrorist bomb attack. Her kind nurse is a burqa-wearing Muslim lady. Wicked white Americans bully and threaten the Muslim nurse until Julia exposes one of her redneck bullies as the terrorist bomber.
Julia travels back in time and convinces Lincoln that the cause of freeing the slaves will be worth the horror and bloodshed of a civil war.
Julia suffers sexual and racial harassment at the hands of a cis white male, until her friend the Jewish lesbian social worker confronts the cis white male and exposes him as being not only impotent, but descended from a confederate soldier.
Julia volunteers for the campaign of a politician, "Ronald Crump," but accidentally overhears him on the telephone with a Slavic foreign leader, Casmir Butina, plotting to take over America and end subsidies for solar energy. She alerts her lesbian Jewish feminist social worker, who is married to Black Muslim burqa-wearing FBI agent Cleopatra Muhammad.
This is Netflix $50million payoff for Obama pushing through net neutrality.
net neutrality
Obamacare for medical et al. Net Neutrality for high-bandwidth suppliers/consumers. Social justice zones (e.g. elective wars, violent coups, anti-nativism) to capture natural resources. Prophecies of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming for clean, renewable green-backs and profits. Planned parenthood for a dysfunctional, selective, recycled Posterity. Immigration reform (e.g. catastrophic anthropogenic refugee crises, mass emigration) to deprecate civil rights, for labor arbitrage, and democratic leverage.
Because no one talks enough about race in America.
Not overtly, other than to paint people by color or displace rabid diversity.
One word: product.
Obama said at some point you’ve made enough money. I just looked it up.

Your husband argues with you? What’s wrong with the man?
Just remember the guy promoting higher ground ran an ad making fun of McCain's physical inability to use modern technology because of the torture McCain had suffered.
Sidenote: this explains part of the Netflix price bump. Expensive propaganda.
@Matt, surely the Obamas are doing this for free, aren't they. Isn't he the fellow who lectured us how "I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money"?
I do think we’ve reached the certain point where the Obamas have made enough money off of me.
I’ll mooch off of someone else’s Netflix from now on.
Roddenberry? Some of his shows were certainly tedious.
Yup.
Don't worry, all--I'm sure Trump will be cutting his own Netflix deal when he leaves office in 2020. Maybe he'll do his own Frederick Douglass documentary, where he can interview the subject himself about the amazing job he's doing and all that recognition he's getting.
How long is it before ideas devolve into rackets anyways?
I’d have a lot more respect if he went and got a job meeting payroll at a tow truck company, or went and tutored one kid at a time.

You don't expect a savvy corp like Netflix to buy pols with its own money, so you?
Netflix wouldn't be doing this if they didn't think it make money. Celebrity endorsements are celebrity endorsements.
So they call their production company Higher Ground. Interesting. It’s a hymn, quite famous in old school evangelical circles. “A higher place than I have found, Lord plant my feet on higher ground.”
Barack signaling he really is a Christian?
Netflix really isn't as great as it used to be. We watch it less and less, especially for kids content. Prime has all the PBS kids shows which is what I prefer for my kids. Disney channel style shows just make kids get an attitude when they talk to adults.
Anything to do with race, news, movies, tv, whining face huckster gets an automatic change of the channel from me. Especially retread movies.
What a silly world we live in. Subscribe to hear our propaganda.
"Higher Ground"... what a bunch of crap.
Did anyone here ever read Caroline Kennedy's re-do of Profiles in Courage? Boy did it suck- the libs' idea of heroes and of great individuals is so skewed to people who work for the govt or who work for non-profits which get boatloads of money from the govt. I expect more of that from the Obamas.
"I don't know. I feel like I'm hearing 2 robots talk. Come on. Is that really them? So eerie!"
To the Trump-addled brain, public figures using complete sentences to talk about inspiring and connecting people as well as entertaining them must indeed sound strange.

Don't fool yourself. Netflix did it as a disguised payoff to the Obamas. Similar to a huge advance on a politicians book that will be remaindered two days after it's release. Hillary got 14 million for Hard Choices. 250,000 copies were sold. The book's list price was $36, 14 million divided by 250,000 is $56. Do you honestly thing Simon and Shuster ever thought they'd recover that $14 million with sales and proceed to make a profit?
Michelle and Barrack jointly received a $65 million advance for book sales.

people whose deaths were not reported by" The New York Times
Like in Venezuela or like Black on white crime?
Wow. Compelling.
I'm really curious whether associating yourself with one side of the political spectrum is a good busienss strategy. I would think not but they entire tv/movie production and distribution as well as most book publishers seems to be convinced otherwise. I cancelled my Netflix subscription partly because I wasn't seeing much that interested me and partly because they were cozying up to the Obamas.
Will the TelePrompTer be there? Without TOTUS there would not be POTUS O.
