"We created Higher Ground to harness the power of storytelling. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited about these projects."

"Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect and inspire us all.”

Said President Obama.

"We love this slate because it spans so many different interests and experiences, yet it’s all woven together with stories that are relevant to our daily lives. We think there’s something here for everyone — moms and dads, curious kids and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day. We can’t wait to see these projects come to life — and the conversations they’ll generate."

Said Michelle Obama.

According to "Barack and Michelle Obama Set Expansive Film and TV Slate at Netflix" in Hollywood Reporter.

I don't know. I feel like I'm hearing 2 robots talk. Come on. Is that really them? So eerie!

I'm reading about the 7 projects. One is about "remarkable people whose deaths were not reported by" The New York Times. Another, called "Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents" is about "the story of our food." Another "will aim to portray the importance of unheralded work done by everyday heroes guiding our government and safeguarding our nation."

I don't have Netflix, but you never know what might push me over the edge and make me subscribe —  unheralded work of everyday heroes, people whose deaths were not reported, our food...

All the conversational flow will be in one direction. We saw this in the Oval Office for 8 years. Who needs more?

However, if Michelle breaks and starts yelling at some teenage mother with three kids by different fathers, "HOW COULD YOU BE SO STUPID!!??!", that will be must-see TV.

I don’t know where the idiom comes from, but when my Dad said “you’re telling stories”, that meant we were lying.

Barack Obama has two real skills (1) looking good in a suit and (2) spinning a line of bullshit. That’s it. So “telling stories” and getting paid megabucks to do it is perfectly synergistic.

I clicked through and I didn't see "Frankenstein, Part II" as one of the feature movies.

As I have dipped my toe into the screenwriting world, it is bizarre to me see calls for scripts about identity politics and such. Sometimes they want to know the intersectional identity of the writer and director.

If I made Frankenstein trans, maybe I could sell it.

I saw a very recent article about how Baltimore had failed so extremely and for so long, that I thought back to The Wire (what 20 years ago?) and how it foretold these issues.

But on topic: these proposals sound so anodyne, I can't imagine anyone will actually watch them, except "we must watch to support B and M" crowd -- people who buy the right books but never read them. The problem with TV is you need to spend time.

Netflix is clearly betting otherwise but I don't think the available market for this sort of "content" is very big. At the risk of going all Pauline Kael I'll say that the people I know, who are quite varied in their age, race, class, and politics demo, are more interested in spending their entertainment hours on GOT, Housewives, Next Top Model, DWTS, Widow, and a long list of other escapist shows.

They should have pitched and run this on PBS, that demo would eat this shit up.

A lot of assholes and idiots but they were in general loyal to the country. You can debate Billy Clinton. He sold the Chinese a lot of really nice missile technology.

But Obama was clearly conspiring with 5 Eyes partners to spy on US citizens. His administration lied to the FISC using material purchased from and built in coordination with an MI6 agent who got his material from Ukraine. They used the FISA warrant on Carter Page, which was upgraded to a level I asset at the request of Rosenstein himself, to spy on everyone in the trump campaign.

I am particularly interested in what Rosenstein and Yates put in that request to promote Page from a t level 7 asset to a level 1 asset. There are clear rules for that kind of escalation. You can’t just do it and the judge had to be in on it.

Maybe it's nostalgia, or a craving for sermons from those who've given up traditional religion, I don't know, but some people seem to crave new versions of the "After School Special". Even complex nuanced funny raunchy shows like Bojack Horseman and Big Mouth seem compelled to spend an episode or two each season doing ham fisted message stories. And they get lots of critical praise for it. I guess it's similar to the big Oscar bait pictures like Green Book or Crash, which are much sillier ways to spend your time than watching the latest Avengers picture if you ask me.

"No series on the government-teat-sucking Julia?"
On the contrary, every episode will be about Julia.
Julia will meet a nice man, but sadly break up with him because he cannot provide the financial -- and emotional -- security of her relationship with her social worker.
Julia will decide to have another child, with help from a government-supplied artificial insemination program. The child will be diagnosed in the womb as a physical monster, and she chooses a government supplied abortion "artist" to kill the child as it exits the birth canal.
Julia is wounded (superficially) in a terrorist bomb attack. Her kind nurse is a burqa-wearing Muslim lady. Wicked white Americans bully and threaten the Muslim nurse until Julia exposes one of her redneck bullies as the terrorist bomber.
Julia travels back in time and convinces Lincoln that the cause of freeing the slaves will be worth the horror and bloodshed of a civil war.
Julia suffers sexual and racial harassment at the hands of a cis white male, until her friend the Jewish lesbian social worker confronts the cis white male and exposes him as being not only impotent, but descended from a confederate soldier.
Julia volunteers for the campaign of a politician, "Ronald Crump," but accidentally overhears him on the telephone with a Slavic foreign leader, Casmir Butina, plotting to take over America and end subsidies for solar energy. She alerts her lesbian Jewish feminist social worker, who is married to Black Muslim burqa-wearing FBI agent Cleopatra Muhammad.

Don't fool yourself. Netflix did it as a disguised payoff to the Obamas. Similar to a huge advance on a politicians book that will be remaindered two days after it's release. Hillary got 14 million for Hard Choices. 250,000 copies were sold. The book's list price was $36, 14 million divided by 250,000 is $56. Do you honestly thing Simon and Shuster ever thought they'd recover that $14 million with sales and proceed to make a profit?

Michelle and Barrack jointly received a $65 million advance for book sales.
