Some people are taking the Democratic women's wearing of white and connecting it with the white robes of the Ku Klux Klan.

For example, at Instapundit:

I don't like this, taking clothing that people put on in an upbeat positive mood and turning it into something ugly.

But that's the move made by Democrats against the Americans who thought they were expressing something optimistic with their MAGA hats. Democrats have worked hard at rebranding the clothing so it would mean racism. They wanted to deprive the hat wearers of the powerful visual form of expression they'd found. They want the message to be: If you wear that hat now — now that we've shown you want we say it means — you must want to be identified as a racist.

I don't like that KKK flip on the Congresswomen's homage to women's suffrage. But if turnabout is fairplay, it's not unfair.

I'd rather call us to a higher level, but you know that I think that in politics, all calls for civility are bullshit. I'd like to be outside of politics, merely observing, from that position I've called "cruel neutrality." So maybe I'm not a hypocrite if I say, don't tie the suffrage expression to the KKK. But I completely realize that if you go along with me about that, it's not going to stop the Trump-haters who are dead-set on stamping the MAGA hat with the meaning RACISM.

White is the double-secret color of the Democratic National Womens' Witches Satanic Lesbian Campaign Committee Coven (DNWWSLCCC). They also sell girl scout cookies made from people. Wholesome.

A spectator (aka observer) might fail to intervene because he is caught. He is caught between his spectatorship and, say, his horror at the seriousness at hand.

It's true that the Democrats were once the party of racist demagoguery. It's true that the Republicans are now. MAGA hats are the uniform of people who want an ethnically pure America. Trump ran basically a one-issue campaign. He talks about rapists pouring over the border and the foreign snakes among us. Now if you ignore that, it would be weird that people are hostile to the hats. But why would you ignore that?

The historical connection between the democrats and the KKK doesn't show that today's anti-racists would have been racists; more like that today's know-nothing racists and would have been democrats. On page [366-67] of her autobiography, Sanger described her meeting with the Klan, where she says she received additional invitations to speak with similar groups:

I accepted an invitation to talk to the women’s branch of the Ku Klux Klan…. I saw through the door dim figures parading with banners and illuminated crosses…. I was escorted to the platform, was introduced, and began to speak…. In the end, through simple illustrations I believed I had accomplished my purpose. A dozen invitations to speak to similar groups were proffered.

1. They did this before out of hatred for Donald Trump. Hatred is usually not something one puts in the positive column. They turned the SOTU into something ugly with their mean girl protest. I saw nothing positive about it. Seriously, how old are they, thirteen?

2. The KKK flip is quite accurate in that the Democrat Ghouls celebrate the murdering of babies up to and right after, birth. Especially black babies, what their heroine, Sanger, referred to as 'weeds'and 'defectives'.

3. What women's suffrage? In these modern times it's more like 'female privilege'. They wore white as a standpoint of superiority over Orange Man Bad. I saw it as the modern day white man-hating, promoters of baby murdering, KKK.

I agree. While I concede it can be satisfying to turn things around on your opponents, I don't think it convinces any fence sitters. It amounts to a taunt, an acknowledgement that basically says "You hate us, we hate you right back!". It feels good in the moment.

At this point I don't know how you convince somebody that you're not racist just because you support Trump and/or wear a MAGA hat or whatever (assuming of course they really believe what they say). I don't think logic and rationality will work with certain people. It's about feelings.

For example: You could calmly explain to them that there's many legitimate, non-racist reasons to be very concerned about excessive illegal immigration. You could detail all the horrors of human trafficking. You could talk about the exploitation of children that occurs. You could point out the very real long term economic concerns about brining in millions and millions of low skilled workers during a period of increasing automatization and robotization shrinking the available low skill jobs. You could talk about the flow of dangerous drugs, most notably fentanyl, and how over the past few years there's been a death toll to rival some wars. None of that will make a dent. I know this because these arguments have been made over and over by many people including Trump himself.

For a very large swath of humanity, feelings often trump logic and reason.

Has anyone pointed out that regardless of "racism deeply embedded into the MAGA movement" (which is false), the clear facts are that Democrats and leftists are openly, proudly racists to the core?

This is not in dispute. They focus on race. They prioritize race. For them, the color of your skin trumps your character. Democrats and leftists pull off the difficult feat of being racist against everyone!

Blacks are too stupid to go to college or vote without help. That's why we need affirmative action! Oh, and they can't have a job which is why it's racist to not put them on welfare.

White people are the devil and Satan and solely responsible for all evil in the world! Except for the Jews, who oppress and murder innocent Palestinian's who only want to reenact Auschwitz--how is that a crime?

Indians are stupid and have to stay on the Reservation, Polyneisans are fat and lazy, Asians have to be held down because they don't have a social life and spend all their time studying....

All of the above are Democrat Party approved statements.

Racism is at the core of leftist thought. It's right there next to the "the only good baby is an aborted baby" doctrine.

“No issue better illustrates the divide between America’s WORKING CLASS and America’s POLITICAL CLASS than illegal immigration.

Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards.

Meanwhile, working class Americans are left to pay the price for mass illegal migration — reduced jobs, lower wages, overburdened schools and hospitals, increased crime, and a depleted social safety net.

Tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate — it is cruel.

1 in 3 women is sexually assaulted on the long journey north.

Smugglers use migrant children as human pawns to exploit our laws and gain access to our country.

Human traffickers and sex traffickers take advantage of the wide open areas between our ports of entry to smuggle thousands of young girls and women into the United States and to sell them into prostitution and modern-day slavery.

Tens of thousands of innocent Americans are killed by lethal drugs that cross our border and flood into our cities — including meth, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl.

The savage gang, MS-13, now operates in at least 20 different American states, and they almost all come through our Southern Border.

Just yesterday, an MS-13 gang member was taken into custody for a fatal shooting on a subway platform in New York City.

We are removing these gang members by the thousands, but until we secure our border they’re going to keep streaming back in.

Year after year, countless Americans are murdered by criminal illegal aliens.

Watched the State of the Union. What people reacted to, or didn't react to, was telling.

As Kimberly Strassel noted in a tweet, the bloc of Democrat women in white (aka Pelosi's Dingbats) sat on their hands when Trump mentioned lowest unemployment rate in history for blacks and Latinos. She said, "that was not a good look". I thought that the Democrats were the friends of the minorities and would be pleased to celebrate this. Nope--if a Rethuglican was responsible for it, they weren't having any of it.

But when The Donald announced that there were now more women in Congress than ever before, the narcissistic crew in white jumped and squealed and high fived like a bunch of college girls who had just learned that they got a bid to pledge their desired sorority.

And San Fernando valley Congressman Brad Sherman (rated by Congressional staffers as the second meanest Congressman--behind only Sheila Jackson Lee) came on the Laura Ingraham show afterwards and said "Trump was responsible for a lot of that", i.e. getting so many Democrat women elected to Congress. He looks like a poisonous little tool.

Sorry Ann. I was one of those pushing the female KKK meme earlier, pointing out that their timing was atrocious. Probably wouldn't have triggered my mind if beleaguered VA Gov Coonman, a Democrat, hadn't had that photo of his med school yearbook page leaked last week. I remembered seeing photos of Klan men in their hoods and their wives sitting next to them in white. Turns out, the photos I could find this morning tended to have them in white robes, and mostly with open faced KKK headgear, sitting next to men with their classical closed faced head gear (on the flip side, the prohibition of headgear last night was probably aimed at the KKK). But, in my mind, the damage was done. For a century, the KKK was the militant wing of the Democratic Party, and they continued to accept (and even laud) former Klan members (e.g. Sen Bob "Sheets" Byrd) into their midsts well into the 21st Century. Indeed, the treatment between the two parties of finding Klan in their midsts is stark - the Dems continued to laud Byrd, despite his former high Klan office, until and even in his death, while Republicans inevitably immediately ostracize anyone who has even the vaguest connection (e.g. Trent Lott).

Let me add that the suffragettes wearing white weren't mistaken for female Klan members for the simple reason that the suffragette movement was initially very Republican (and the Klan almost exclusively Democratic). We have dozens of family letters from the 1850s and 1860s, between our ancestress in the wilds of MI, and her sisters back in OH, advocating for three causes: emancipation of the slaves, suffrage, and temperance. All come straight out of their New England Protestant beliefs. Besides family events, this is pretty much all they talked about in their letters. They all strongly supported Lincoln, and would have voted for him on the slavery issue alone (and most of their men no doubt did), if they could have. (I think that the temperance gives away their Puritan religious roots).

Henry said...

@Bruce Hayden -- At some point I read a book about Lincoln's development as a politician. Can't remember the title. But the manner in which he balanced the emancipation movement, temperance movement, and no-nothing movement is fascinating. All three groups came to the Republican party with some implacable positions and Lincoln made efforts to please them all without joining any of them.

Bay Area Guy said...

One tactic the Left often uses is to falsely claim someone is "racist."

In 2019, the "racist" label is toxic and career-ending for many professionals.

Yes, it's bad to be a racist. But it's EQUALLY bad to falsely accuse someone of being racist, when they are not.

This is very similar to the complaints levied against Joe McCarthy in the late 40s and 50s. The charge was that he called people "Communists," when they were mere liberals, not affiliated whatsoever with the Soviets, and that this wrongly wrecked their careers.

I agree with the criticism of McCarthy (historically, of course. I wasn't there at the time). He botched what should have been a valid critique of Stalin and the Soviets.

But that is what the Left does today with respect to race.

So, turnabout is fair play. If various Dems chose to wear blackface in college, or wear white outfits that look like Klan outfits or ignore the history of the Democrat Party as the home of the Klan and Jim Crowe, well, let's get it on.

"It's true that the Democrats were once the party of racist demagoguery. But why would you ignore that?"

No - decidedly not true that Republicans are the party of racist demagoguery today. That is classic revisionism and wishful thinking on your part. What we want is a color blind society, not an ethically pure one. But one that shares common values. It is still the Democrats who attempt to divide the country on racial grounds, as they have for well over a century and a half.

As for MAGA hats - they are only racist because you want them to be. Nothing racist in what they stand for, esp now with the results so far of the Trump Presidency of the lowest Black, Hispanic, etc unemployment in generations, as well as its criminal justice reforms. Unless you think that higher Black and Hispanic employment rates are somehow racist.

"The historical connection between the democrats and the KKK doesn't show that today's anti-racists would have been racists; more like that today's know-nothing racists and would have been democrats. Fair enough, as far as it goes. You would've been a democrat in the pre-60s south. I don't see where that gets you."

As noted, the Democrats continue to refuse to accept their racist past, as evidenced by their failure to expel Sen Byrd from their ranks, but lauded him even in death, despite his former high Klan office, and their failure to force VA Gov Coonman to step down. And, yes, their refusal to condemn and ostracize the prominent antisemites in their midsts, even to this day. Prominent Black, Hispanic, and Muslim Democrats are lauded, and not condemned, for their rabidly racist speech, with nary a dissenting voice from that party. The party that claims to be the anti racist party. Sorry. Doesn't fly.

Of course, a lot of conservatives who aren't racist assume that everyone who shares their goals is the same. I’m a mom, a businesswoman and a state legislator serving South Carolina. At a young age, I was determined to forge my own path through life. And nearly 20 years ago I became the first female graduate of The Citadel after following in my father’s footsteps. I also have experience starting my own business and in 2017 ran for – and won – a seat in the state legislature, on my own terms.

As women we make a fundamental mistake when we make our identity as women the WHOLE story.

The point of breaking glass ceilings is so that, after they’re broken, it doesn’t matter anymore. The American experiment is built on the premise that if you set a goal, show up on time and work hard, then success is within reach. We can ALL achieve the American dream regardless of our gender.

The identity politics being overplayed by liberal women in Washington, on display last night during the president’s State of the Union last night, further sets women back rather than advancing our futures. Acting like we just earned the right to vote and are held back strictly because of our gender is an enormous disservice to women everywhere.

We don’t need to dress alike.

We don’t need to think alike.
