Most Presidents "want to keep parts of the White House private for their families and themselves," but Trump is "very restless and doesn't like desk work. He’d rather roam around and B.S. with people than hunker down."

Says presidential historian Douglas Brinkley, quoted in "‘Want to see the Lincoln bedroom?’: Trump relishes role as White House tour guide" (WaPo).

Even though the specific place in the White House the headline mentions is the Lincoln Bedroom, the first place the article mentions is the room next to the Oval Office that Trump shows with the line, "I’m told this is where Bill and Monica...." He laughs and makes faces and, according to WaPo, relying on a new book, "The subject often leads to lengthy, sometimes crass conversations." I'd love to read the transcript! By the way the subject is crass to begin with. It's not really a matter of leading to crassness.

OMG that's so funny. Clinton got blow jobs from an intern in a but it is Trump talking about it what's crass.

The Clinton Blow Job Vestibule > The Lincoln Bedroom

The media wing of the democrat party is shedding jobs as their usefulness to their masters wanes.

Huffpo and Buzzfeed were supported by lesser bilioares.

NYTs and WAPO still influences enough idiots to be useful to their masters though. They will only face limited cost cutting.

Mostly editors and content providers. Most "writing" is automated now.

Is he renting the Lincoln Bedroom to donors as Clinton and I believe W did?
Just because he built hotels doesn't mean he knows how to run one.

" By the way the subject is crass to begin with."

Agreed, but imagine the tsunami of crassness that the actual event encompassed. The President of the United States is married to a high-profile, ambitious, professional woman and cheats on her by having sex in the freaking White House. I doubt that Monica could even lift those balls. "Crassness begets more crassness." ~ Caligula - possibly

I hope that the crooked hanging portrait of Hillary is still part of the tour as well as the portrait of Jackson on the wall next to his desk.

As others are noting quite well; what Clinton did was crass. Continually talking about it may also be crass, but I think Trump is making a point that I know many Hillary supporters missed. I'm happy to see many Althouse commenters never missed it.

If you want to imagine just how far hypocrisy can go, imagine if Trump copied the Lewinsky precedent today. Same people - opposite standards.

Kamala Harris is never going to have to answer how her political career started.

But Trump will bring it up.

Her most polished political skill is sleeping with a married man in a position of power who gave her jobs and helped her get her first elected positions.

Her second most polished political skill is persecuting people she disagrees with using government as a weapon to suppress her enemies.

bagoh20 said...

Trump should have a meeting behind closed doors with Kamala, then walk out to the press and say, " I can see now why she is rising so fast in her party. The woman is very talented.

chickelit said...

@Achilles: Harris sounds like Hillary on stilts. The DNC has a lot of work to do to soften that image.

There is absolutely no way in heck that LLR Chuck is going to sit around and let any of you get away with smearing the pristine record and character of one William Jefferson Clinton!

Remember, I warned you....

When Clinton had sex with a young intern IN THE FREAKING WHITE HOUSE - The collective left yawned and said "So what - it's just sex." Then went on to nominate his evil wife, that very same woman who trashed Bill's female victims. You know- because pro-woman and stuff.

Someone needs to look Rachel Maddow right in the eyes and say = "Imagine if Trump had sex in the oval office with a young intern.... Would that get you, dear Rachel, to flail your arms and hands around like an obsessed overly animated media(D) weirdo?"

If Trump haters want to understand why Trump supporters don't abandon him for being crass, just imagine if Bill Clinton ran in 2020. Would you vote for him?

Hillary was particularly cheered by Roger Stone's indictment. She seems unaware that people would cheer her indictment.

Quite quite. Indubitably!

No, Professor Althouse, you're all wrong. It's not crass to DO the thing, it's crass to TALK about the thing. It's also crass when the WRONG PEOPLE do or talk about the thing, naturally, but THOSE people are just crass and vulgar no matter what they do.

Kathy Griffin or Lena Dunham can be crude, vulgar, and downright disgusting as much as they want--they're the CORRECT people and we celebrate their edgy nonconformity. If they were the WRONG people, though, we'd all look down our noses at their crassness and cluck about their low class ways.

I said the "topic" was crass. That implied talking about it.

Maybe Clinton could re-enact the scene as part of the White House tour.

I don't think it was crass, i think it was a great display of feminism. Here is this young women, wanting to suck a president's penis not daunted by staid conventions , or sterotype of how a women should act, no not her , she is a women who has desires and being a feminist is going to fulfill her womanly cravings. You go girl and suck that that thing and do it in the most revered room in the US. You show en Monica.

Thank you for your trenchant analysis mccullough.

BTW, which gal do you think The Bachelor will select and in what ways do you think Trump is "signalling" that he already knows the answer?

Let's not forget Fiddle and Faddle.

"Priscilla Wear and Jill Cowen were known by smirky security code names, “Fiddle and Faddle” respectively. The two women were known more for their closeness with the president than their heavy lifting as employees: “Neither did much work,” a former Secret Service agent told author Ronald Kessler. Both reportedly left work frequently to skinny-dip in the pool with JFK..."

Yes indeed.

She feels a little too comfortable that the DOJ and the FBI and hacks deep within are keeping her free.

I thought the premise of the criticism was stupid. What's Trump supposed to say to guests, "Hi, I'm the President. Want to watch me sit at my desk and work?" I don't know why but rich people give you a tour of their homes. That's what all those style and architecture magazines are about as well. The fact that Trump is thrilled about living in the White House and by the history of the place is a negative? Really? I think the criticism is more Trump derangement syndrome.

Every assertion of Presidential behavior in the WaPo article comes from anonymous sources (three anonymice here) and the main assertion (he likes to show off the Clinton-Lewinsky BJ spot, which has since been remodeled out of existence) comes from a new tell-all book, the title of which the WaPo got wrong and had to correct with an update. I haven't read (and will not) that book, but I'm gonna bet the story in the book is also attributed to anonymous sources. I'm very sorry, but I just don't believe anything the media says anymore. Nothing.

Brinkley really has been hanging around Hillary Clinton too much if he thinks that it's odd for a politician to want to walk around talking to people.

JFK was a classy kind of crass. As horndogs go, he was probably more hump manic than Clinton or Trump, but he seems immune from criticism. I would give him a hall pass for Marilyn Monroe but that thing with the Munchausen bj with the secretary is beyond creepy.......With sex scandals it's interesting to observe who perishes and who prospers. If you're looking for satisfying morality tales, don't look to the lives of Presidents.......Well, it's reassuring to note that our two greatest Presidents, Washington and Lincoln, didn't fool around. Give Lincoln bonus points because his wife was a bigger mess than Marilyn Monroe.
