Washington D.C., Jan 22, 2019 / 03:58 pm (CNA).- While chanting and playing ceremonial drums, a group of Native American rights activists reportedly led by Nathan Phillips attempted Jan. 19 to enter Washington, D.C.’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during a Saturday evening Mass.

Glenn Greenwald: ...But in homage to BuzzFeed’s past viral glory, following are the top ten worst media failures in two-plus-years of Trump/Russia reporting. They are listed in reverse order, as measured by the magnitude of the embarrassment, the hysteria they generated on social media and cable news, the level of journalistic recklessness that produced them, and the amount of damage and danger they caused. This list was extremely difficult to compile in part because news outlets (particularly CNN and MSNBC) often delete from the internet the video segments of their most embarrassing moments. Even more challenging was the fact that the number of worthy nominees is so large that highly meritorious entrees had to be excluded, but are acknowledged at the end with (dis)honorable mention status....

A bit crowded in here... It seems Mr. Nathan Phillips is now angry with the Covington Boys (That's how it shall be from now on, all caps; folks will think they're civil rights martyrs.) not for being white, but for being thieves — narative thieves!

I have put all sin behind me. I can't even play video games for five minutes before I hear the Lord reminding me that I have so much work to do, serving Him. This transformation has taken months, but I feel very well prepared. That's pretty much it. I feel like it is my sacred duty to listen very carefully to my Lord, in case one of my brothers or sisters is in need. I promise to carry a prayer for you to Mass, tomorrow. I promise to try to notice, but remember that I pray for more attentiveness. I promise, if you contact me, or even just, "put it out there," that I will adoringly and respectfully and joyfully, immediately pray for your needs. I am a servant of the Lord.

I will still be light-hearted and try to be fun, but this, like everything that crosses my awareness and becomes an impulse, will be treated as a gift from G-d. This is what it's like to be named, Matthew. Everything is a gift, including pain. I never lie. I intend to forsake sin, and I intend to lift you up to our Creator. He knows what you need. I don't even need to know what you need, because He already does.

One area nobody seems to be addressing is the right to wait for a bus. The Covington Kids were waiting for a bus, when jerks with megaphones started harassing them. They were harassed because they were there and perhaps, because they were white, and perhaps because they were wearing the wrong hats. As part of being harassed, they were filmed in case they behaved in some manner that could be used against them. They tried the strategy of performing chants, which was deemed worse than standing and taking abuse. Ultimately, serious efforts were made to derail their life plans.
This is justified by a concept of freedom of speech that cedes the initiative and control to those who want to destroy civic trust. The ubiquity of cameras and the low costs of video dissemination have combined to create a weapons undreamed of by Orwell.

I think the Covington Boys came out of this looking like men. They were insulted for hours by adults, subjected to a Twitter mob attack, abandoned by their cowardly bishop; and they stood their ground, they chanted their chants, but did nothing back, nothing like the ugliness of the so-called adults around them. These young men even understood what was happening - young Mr. Sandmann said they thought adults were trying to provoke young boys into doing something that would discredit the March. Yes, and this story and the whole of last week was a warning to everyone of good will - believe nothing in the mainstream media or on Twitter before it is checked by some means outside the bubble. Widespread acceptance of a story means absolutely nothing in terms of whether anybody at all has verified the story. And sudden, widespread acceptance of story by the media should always strongly suggest that a major, unverified lie which panders to liberal-lefty prejudice is being pushed forward for the gullible to gobble down. If all of us trying to be Americans all here together learn that not to take the bait, something good will have come out of the Covington Boys ordeal.

Phillips has thinning hair and a bald spot, which is what happens as the years go by. Still, I don't think it's a good idea to wear such hair at shoulder length. It draws attention to how bad it is. Maybe it's some kind of Native American thing. Also he's missing a few teeth. For his own sake he needs dentures or implants or something. Long stringy hair and bad teeth give off a drug addict vibe. If you seek the public spotlight, you should take more care with your appearance.......Well, he's safe. No one will ever make such comments as I have just made in public utterance. None of the people who commented on the punchability of Sandmann's face will ever say anything negative about Phillips or his appearance.........My guess is that if they gave Phillips the full Zimmerman colonoscopy they would discover many interesting facts, but that won't happen. Any negative facts that Breitbart digs up will be discounted as the racism of the alt right.....I have read that Phillips is an actor. Maybe all this notoriety will land him a few roles, and he'll be able to get a haircut and maybe even get his teeth fixed. Sandman, if he wants it, could land a movie role. He'd be a natural for a Bond super villain. Or maybe a Marvel one, and Samuel Jackson could punch him in the face.

Rambunctious Indian elder Nathan Phillips tried to disrupt evening mass at the Washington, D.C.’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

While chanting and playing ceremonial drums, a group of Native American rights activists reportedly led by Nathan Phillips attempted Jan. 19 to enter Washington, D.C.’s Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception during a Saturday evening Mass.

The group of 20 demonstrators was stopped by shrine security as it tried to enter the church during its 5:15 pm Vigil Mass, according to a shrine security guard on duty during the Mass. ....

“We had hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the country come here to celebrate life, to celebrate each other together. That a protest tried to come inside during Mass was really the worst.”

The guard told CNA [The Catholic News Agency] the situation was “tense.” ....

Video footage showed one supporter saying that the group had gathered at the shrine to listen to Phillips, and to hold the Catholic Church “accountable” for the alleged actions of the Covington Catholic students and for the “colonial violence that the Catholic Church reproduces every day.” ...

The security guard told CNA that the incident was especially distressing given that Mass was underway.

“It’s a house of worship, a place of prayer where people come to celebrate. All this anger is so against what we are all about here.”

He told CNA that he’d never witnessed anything like it during his whole time of employment at the basilica. ....

The campaign of harassment against the Covington people is designed for a purpose - that is to discourage political speech from such persons, ordinary citizens without institutional protection. They dont want this "March for Life" thing anymore, or anything like it.

The other side has no such worries. They cannot be made to suffer, especially as they do not usually use ordinary people in the streets, but "activists" who do it professionally or who are guaranteed employment by the vast array of liberal institutions. And they use minorities by preference, who have, apparently, carte blanche.

You Americans have set up a very strange world. Too strange for me.

I went to a high school that was 30% native American (West High School in Minneapolis, in the 1970s). I understand that the Indians in Minnesota are in some ways non-typical -- they rebelled in the 1860s and were cruelly crushed. An actual bounty was put out some Indians that had escaped hanging after the 1862 uprising. The Indian men went to ground and the army sequestered the Indian women and children on military bases to keep them from aiding the men who had run to ground. Nasty bit of business on both sides. Even if people take your land, it is not moral to torture and kill settlers.
Anyways, the Indians I went to high school with were crazy. They existed on a whole other moral plane. Most of them were from the Red Lake res in Northern Minnesota. A lot of the girls were hooking during lunch hour and after class. The Indian guys had no interest at all in the American Dream of getting a job, working hard, and maybe buying a house in the suburbs. They wanted to drink alcohol and sniff paint thinner. This was back in the days when the drinking age in Minnesota 18. I never saw any of my Indian classmates carded. They could buy liquor at fifteen, I suppose the liquor store owners knew that if he refused to sell the underage Indian a pint of Log Cabin, he'd just go down the street to a convenience store and by a bottle of Listerine. They couldn't think ahead. It was -- maybe is? -- illegal to sell liquor or strong spirits on Sundays in Minnesota, and I've stood in line at a convenience store behind a half dozen Indians buying listerine or lysol on a Sunday. The lysol thing was you sprayed it into the cap, and the liquid that collected was high octane alcohol.
When I was fifteen I took the public bus to school. One day, in the bus shelter, there was an old Indian guy. He seemed jovial and friendly, a nice guy, despite the fact that his face was covered in blood. Someone had punched the Hell out of his mouth. He said he was catching the bus to the hospital. Some cops cruised by, talked to him, and called an ambulance. The old Indian guy didn't like this, because they would take him to detox because he was drunk. In detox, in those days, they kept you for two days and, man or woman, they shaved your head. Having a shaved head was a special mark of shame for white people, because it meant you'd been picked up and sent to detox with the drunk Indians. The Indians didn't like it either.

I only knew white people. Once was enough for them. I don't think that detox had the stigma for Indians that it had for white people. I'm almost embarrassed to report about this. The Indians were so different.
Maybe twenty years ago I was back in my old neighborhood in Minneapolis visiting a friend. I stopped for gas and ahead of me in the line at the cashier were these two Indian chicks buying two 24 packs of cheap beer. They looked like Ojibway, I suppose, short and dark with straight hair. I exchanged some friendly words with them, and outside the gas station I saw them hitch hiking with their beer. I offered them a ride. Kind of fun actually, it was a cold night and they only wanted to go a mile or two.
They directed me to terrible place, the only house still standing between the river and the tracks. It looked like Hell to me. Windows all lit up, loud music and shouts and laughter. The Indian girls invited me to the party. I told them "No."
I wouldn't have gone five minutes in that place before someone took a swing at me.

Oh, well. The lords and ladies want their wealth and power. Their administrators want to manage their estates and taxable carbon-based commodities. Probably if you scoured every human heart you could find such wickednesses as they portray in their little (fake) dramas, which the Althouses mistake for (reality) docudrama, but then a) actual problems could be identified and worked on, b) scouring sounds like work,
c) perception is reality and a few days of free innuendo is all they need for their purposes, d) it really stings the right to be falsely accused and smeared, and what joy to hurt, to torment one's enemies.
