... keep your spirits up!

I know Trump is going to speak tonight, but I'll deal with it in the morning. Talk all you want here in the café. Go crazy!

For those who participated in yesterday's post entitled The controversy of the moment involves AOCs advocacy of a tax rate of 70-80 percent on very high incomes, which is obviously crazy, right?, John Cochrane has a post today with his analysis of Krugman's argument:

Krugman on optimal taxes

Cochrane addresses Krugman with many of the same points made by the posters here. It's an easy read and not all that wonkish...

It as also interesting that a lively debate was still being had at the post and after nearly 300 comments the thread had not devolved into mush.

Well done everyone- thanks!

I have, in the last couple of days, read calls for impeachment as calls for some sort of divorce. The standard is not "high crimes and misdemeanors," it is "irreconcilable differences."
Now I see this reflected all over the place. So, do we stay together for the kids or get on with our own lives?

The divorce is really a red/blue divorce. We will no longer be able to think of ourselves as an American people. People simply will not think that way. We will be a more tribal society that will fight for an equitable division of power. Perhaps like Lebanon.

They also wouldn't mind if Trump personally divested his holdings and donated the money to worthy black & Palestinian causes.

I'd say this was Move One. Trump made a Case for national security (crime and drugs) and made a Case to which bleeding heart liberals should listen (abuse of women and children). We're 3 days from Move Three, the first missed paycheck which will bring screams of anguish. Move Four is Congress Does Nothing. I still say the major problem is on this side of the border. Enough instances of the Constitution being flouted by the states "legalizing" this that and the other - marijuana, registering illegal aliens to vote, enrolling them in welfare programs, establishing "sanctuary" cities, prohibiting state and local officials from cooperating with federal officials, etc. and so on, and on - without the Federal Government calling them to account for this, will serve the Democrats' aim to show that pesky old Constitution is outdated and needs to be repealed and replaced. They never have liked it and never will.

Matt Sablan said...

That's kind of right Hagar. I think the biggest thing to stop illegal immigration would be enforcement of things like e-Verify and actual punishments for people hiring illegals and a crackdown on sanctuary cities by withholding government funding.

But, no one's really got the stones to do that.

A great speech is all about delivery. Trump cannot deliver a speech. His specialty is flame throwing in ways that are unexpected by a politician. But this was not the venue or moment for a flame being thrown. This was his moment to state what should be the obvious case for national security, and he failed to do so with a monotonous, detached reading of a weak script. Don't they have any writers in this White House? This should have been a layup.

As for the Chuck & Nancy Show, does the nation really need a rebuttal for every speech Trump gives? Did we have rebuttals to Obama? Anyway- Chuck and Nancy may have said some things but I could not tell. I was too transfixed on how they looked. They put a whole new level of 'eep' in Creepiness.

Is Mitch McConnell Pelosi's co-equal? Is each Justice a co-equal? What about Pence? He's second in succession. Where's his co-equal power? There must be 13 co-equals by Inga logic: 9 Justices, the titular head of each House, and Trump. I'm not sure if this flies, Inga. It's certainly never taught in civics.

I think you know, and I think Pelosi knows, that there are 3 co-equal branches of Government, but that the power is is unequally vested within these branches.

Trump did not argue against immigration.

And AOC has apparently never bothered to take a ferry over to Ellis Island. European immigrants to America did not just step off the boat and waltz merrily into the country. They were processed and medically examined and a certain number were refused entry, mainly for health reasons.

FIDO said...

If Trump declared a National Emergency, it would seem...abrupt to the American people.

In this speech

1) He laid out the humanitarian case

2) He laid out the abuses done by some illegal immigrants

3) He outlined the security threat

4) He outlined the hypocrisy of Schumer and Pelosi at changing their stance. Most telling: "They used to be 'for this' until I got to be president". He makes this look like a personal smear by them on him.

5) He noted that the Democrats live in Walled Communities. His best line: "We do not have walls because we hate the people outside of them. We build them because we love the people inside."

Now the lumpen proletariat has had a small wake up call by making this address and the vast majority who have totally missed the government shut down and the dispute can now think about it.

This was aimed at the Right and the Middle since the Left and Chuck refuse to countenance any contrary ideas.

In the State of the Union, this will be a big part and the image of Democrats sitting on their hands when he lays out some undeniable problems will be very bad optics.

In a month, he has more leeway to declare a national emergency. I wonder how that ties with the present position of that dreaded caravan everyone was talking about until it reflected badly on Democrats.

He stayed on message, and the message was strong for anyone with any common sense: The people that we, the legal citizens of this country, have elected to represent us, need to do their job and protect us from those who would come here illegally and victimize American citizens.

The sad fact is that Democrat politicians care more about illegal aliens who they hope will eventually become Democrat voters than they do about American citizens who are being robbed, assaulted, raped and murdered by the thousands by illegal aliens who have no business being here in the first place. Democrat politicians think that you can't make a Democrat voter omelet without breaking a lot of eggs. That's not "fear-mongering"; that's a fact.
