You don't treat Trump like that.

"Trump, Angry Over Mattis’s Rebuke, Removes Him 2 Months Early" (NYT).
When Mr. Trump first announced that Mr. Mattis was leaving, effective Feb. 28, he praised the defense secretary on Twitter, saying he was retiring “with distinction.” One aide said that although Mr. Trump had already seen the resignation letter when he praised Mr. Mattis, the president did not understand just how forceful a rejection of his strategy Mr. Mattis had issued. The president has grown increasingly angry as the days have passed....

Mattis' resignation letter wasn't a complete nothing-burger by any means, but this also isn't the stunning rebuke some imagine. Besides Trump is the elected Commander-in-Chief, it is his prerogative to set military policy. It is the Defense Secretary's obligation to carry that out. If the Defense Secretary doesn't think he could do a good job carrying that out, for whatever reason, he should offer his resignation.

In the Althouse Hillbilly world it is never that there is anything wrong with Trump. Instead, it has to be the unprecedented number of people who have parted with him on bad terms. You have to be a kooky true Trump believer to be that dumb. But that is Ann Althouse for you.

Mad Dog was misrepresented from the beginning. He is part of the Obama military leadership that revels in gays and transgenders in the military. He is against Israel and fought against Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and wants to support the Palestinian state. He supports the same failed neocon policies of the last thirty years. He didn’t need to release his resignation to the press. He did that to embarrass the President.

President Trump is entitled to people who support his goals of ending the endless wars. Who supports the goal of having NATO freeloaders pay what they committed to pay. If Mathis can not agree he can reign and get a gig at CNN.

I predict he gets a big contract there before you know it.

When Mattis continuously pushed back on tne obama admin hacks who were attempting to deliver everything the mullahs wanted, obama fired Mattis without so much as a by your leave.

Once written, twice: "In the Althouse Hillbilly world it is never that there is anything wrong with Trump. Instead, it has to be the unprecedented number of people who have parted with him on bad terms."

Obama dropped Mattis like a bad habit and fired him without even bothering to call.

There have been an unprecedented number of personnel changes because its difficult to find actual agents of change in the establishment ranks after 60 years of foreign policy and military strategy ossification.

It took the obliteration of the US battleships at Pearl Harbor to finally move away fron the turn of the century ship vs ship thinking in the Navy.

It took a massive degradation in the US air combat kill ratio from Korea to Vietnam to finally shake enough Pentagon morons out of their "missile only" mentality and return emphasis to overall air combat skillset improvement.

It took a fatal hit to the establishment's idiotic conventional war strategy in Vietnam to force them to reinvestgate and emphasize counter-insurgency/guerilla warfare thinking. Ironically, Mattis was younger then and part of the change.

But now, as it was then, a change in thinking in terms of strategy and tactics in the Middle East and elsewhere is long overdue.

As is holding accountable those piece of crap socialist euro-weasel leeches who want to continue spinging 100% of their strategic and most of their tactical defense off the US.

Ironically again, Mattis the future change agent from the 70's is now the agent that needs changing.

Ever hear the phrase "fighting the last war?"

Yeah, there's a reason that saying exists...

In his letter, Mattis complains about not "respecting" allies.

Which ones?

The German ally who sold out to Putin, with their former chancellor arranging the big gas deal and pipeline?

The French ally who just presumed to lecture the president about "nationalism"?

The Turkish ally who just threatened our ally in Syria?

The Kurdish ally, whose independent existence would require permanent military protection?

All the allies who have been free riding on our protection for, oh, half a century?

In his letter, Mattis also stresses the need to stand up to bad actors, especially Russia and China.

But who has done more to stand up to China than Trump?

In relation to Russia, Trump has bolstered Poland and Ukraine, canceled the INF deal, killed a bunch of their people in Syria, increased defense spending, and is getting NATO to up its $$. What more would Mattis have us do?

Drago said...

Can you believe that obama was so petty and angry at Mattis for daring to oppose the horrific mullah-empowering Iran deal that obama fired Mattis as head of Central Command without even bothering to tell him first?

Its very clear that the entirety of the establishment foreign and economic policy thinking is that the US should transfer trillions of dollars to other nations and act as the sole global policeman being directed by the global elites without any consideration to what is specifically is in Americas best interest.

From the perspective of these idiot foreign leaders its a total win: America loses in trade imbalances and tariffs forever while tin-pot leaders around the world act in concert with US globalists to put US troops at the worlds disposal.

Who cares how many Americans die? They are deplorables...and expendable.

I've finally figured out why these writers and talking heads are getting increasingly hysterical when it comes to Trump. Going from unnamed sources to 2 unnamed sources, to 18 unnamed sources, etc.

For a very long time now there has been this agreement. Unspoken. The media, polling groups and politicians (Democrats) all work together to influence us. First the media runs stories, "Look at this little girl crying!" and then the media commissions a poll once the crying girl has had her effect, "Polling says everyone agrees with us." and then they start asking the politicians questions, "Why aren't you doing what polling says the people want you to do via our manipulation of their emotions?"

Usually this works. Especially on the intended audience of Republican politicians.

But it's not working on Trump. He just ignores the manipulation. And it's driving them all insane. They can't handle it. This has worked for a long time now. They are important people. Influencial! All of America is manipulated by them on a regular basis. What the hell is wrong with Trump!?

This isn't going to end well.

Gettingour troops out of there. Politicians And pundits are wallowing in confusion because politicians don't keep promises. Businessmen do. If you perused other parts of the internet you'll discover there's actually been planning being done for the last 2 years for a withdrawal.

There's a part of President Donald John Trump's strategy being ignored, and it has to do with tactics. He doesn't get involved with day to day or hour to hour decisions on what to do at the point of the spear. The military leaders on the ground are empowered to make decisions. Crazy idea, isn't it? Trusting subordinates to do their job without micromanaging them?

BTW, tcrosse, you're wrong. Mattis is a general and always will be one, even filling a civilian billet. Just as I am a Chief Petty Officer and will always be one. As an officer he can be involuntarily called to active duty at any time. As enlisted, it now requires an actual state of war to call me back involuntarily, although if asked nicely I'd go.

Ha ha. Inga is a “perfect example of” the exact ideological opposite of the “Trump cultist” of which she dreams — which is actually yet another kind of cultist — a real one not the fake one(s) she constantly projects. (Why does the left project so much? It's so common.)

Moreover, it's telling when the anti-Trump cultists all go absolutely giddy with anticipation whenever the media noise level approaches a scream — without any idea of how one gets from a to b on getting rid of Trump. Remember that Republican Senate majority? That's not going away over the next two years. It's a hard road getting from minority status to a two-thirds majority vote for an impeachment conviction!

But “The End” for Trump is in sight! How many times has that occurred over the more than two years since Trump was elected? Yet, there's no way that Inga would have predicted that she and we would still be here — Trump president and in control of the Executive Office — after all this time; nor that he wouldn't have done such despicable acts by now that he'd obviously be “Hitler” in everyone's eyes.

Yet that hasn't occurred, Inga totally wouldn't have predicted it — but we're supposed to flinch in terror when she oh-so-confidently proclaims yet another howler? Hardly!

He had some good moves, but in the end the no of provinces under Taliban control increased over the last two years. The peoples militias were further entrenched in iraq under pasdaran control.

AdSs seems very well versed on various US strategies and the corresponding generals who advocate for those strategies....

Though I am fairly certain adSs has caught 1 or 2 GoArmy commercials over the years.

So there is that.

With Mattis out and Kelley headed that way, our only hope will be to recruit theleaders of antifa. After all, the lefties/LLR's assure me that those guys are EXACTLY like the heroes that stormed Normandy.

And those lefties and LLR's were not joking....

Nobody— certainly not me — doubts that the President must have a SecDef who will reflect administration policy.

But many people— including me — believe that as a matter of judgment, and based on Mattis’ lifetime of service, a dazzling record of achievement in the military, and a reputation for nothing less than personal honor and integrity, Mattis knows better than Trump. Trump; who lied his way through the Vietnam era, lied his way through New York City, lied his way into the White House and whose motivation now for a Syrian pullout is more about the news cycle and politics than the lives of Americans in the military.

The James Mattis book ought to be interesting.

It is amazing how horrible a person's character and intelligence is in 'ChuckWorld' when they agree to work with Trump

...and yet how suddenly incredibly intelligent they become in 'ChuckWorld' when they insult, disparage, or leave Trump's service.

Now objectively, an outside observer would note some inconsistency.

Hello Chuck *Mattis knows better than Trump. *
I'm reading elsewhere that Mattis asked his aide to run off copies of his resignation letter to be "airdropped" over DC.

Narayanan said...

To clarify for Chuck ...
"airdropped" = tossed out of open window from Pentagon.
To be clear ... I don't know if windows can open.
You get me there. I leave research to you.

President Trump withdraws US troops from Syria, Afghanistan.

Liberals: Trump is a crazy, fascist dictator who does not want to fight wars.

Weird.

“Drago, no one gives a shit that Obama fired Mattis. “

It was important though... Obama the Stupid was illegally funding the Iranian mad mullahs with US taxpayer money, and general Mattis asked him what was his plan. Obana the Stupid got angry and fired him.

The UN was just 6 years old back then and hadn't yet become the anti-US basket case that it is today

Ah, but not so the case with the Democratic party had become one such.
The rot has been bipartisan.
Here's some history for roots of this development.

Trump is no Obama and Trump firing Mattis isn’t comparable to Obama firing him in any way shape or form.

On this one point, you're correct.

Obama dumped Mattis because Mattis was the fly in the ointment when it came to Obama giving aid and comfort to our enemies in Iran.

Trump is dumping Mattis because he's the fly in the ointment when it comes to Trump wanting US troops out of Syria.

There is no comparison. But you're too stupid to realize just how bad it makes you look.

How does the NYT know Trump is "increasingly angry"? Did they get that from Claas Relotius?

Wow, Inga @ 12/23 9:16pm gives as clear an enunciation of "it's different when we do it" as I've ever seen.
