So said Trump, back in the 80s, according to Barbara Res, the former vice president in charge of construction at the Trump Organization, writing in The Daily News.
The Braille was in the elevator control panels. According to Res, who wasn't present for the incident, the architect told him it had to be there, because it was required by law, and: "The more the architect protested, the angrier Trump got. Donald liked to pick on this guy. As a general rule, Trump thought architects and engineers were weak as compared to construction people. And he loved to torment weak people."
One could also say that architects and engineers are the elite, and it's fun or good for them to knock them around. "No blind people are going to live in Trump Tower" sounds like a joke — not the kind of joke designed for public consumption, but it is funny. You've got a tall glass tower that's all about great views. You pay a big premium for those views, and a blind person has (the premise of the joke is) no use for them. I mean, I can see a use: a very rich blind person might splurge on a feature that he himself cannot enjoy but he could show off to visitors.
That makes me think of Picasso's last words: "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink anymore."

Seeing eye dogs read the braille.
Tucson airport in the 60s had a sign "No Dogs except seeing-eye dogs"
Lots of cashing in a peak crazy before the election.
The architect told him it had to be there, because it was required by law...
Get rid of the... Braille... Just do it."
So said Trump
Surely that is a high crime!!!
I mean, seriously, how many stories is the Trump Tower? Just how high does it have to be before Republicans will admit that it is a high crime and impeach Trump?!?
think the Most Important line in this story is:
According to Res, who wasn't present for the incident
remember! you can say ANYTHING about Trump, without ANYTHING to back it up; as long as it's derogatory
Expletive has to be fucking.
Bad words have precise shadings.
It's a law that every business has to put a lot of labor-law posters on the walls, but nobody ever reads any of those posters.
I suppose that likewise no blind people ever read the braille by any elevator buttons.
How much money would you guess we've wasted on unused braille signs?
Just another post where Ann further debases herself in proving that no one out does her in Trump syncophantdom.
I mean, I can see a use: a very rich blind person might splurge on a feature that he himself cannot enjoy but he could show off to visitors.
Or, a sighted person might sometimes have visitors who are blind.
Or, an tenant might go blind after moving in
According to Res, who wasn't present for the incident,
Sounds about right. "Incident" = Trump said something.
Braille sign for "Pilot Lounge".
"A video recorded by Google shortly after the 2016 presidential election reveals an atmosphere of panic and dismay amongst the tech giant’s leadership, coupled with a determination to thwart both the Trump agenda and the broader populist movement emerging around the globe."
Finally - we found the holy grail to impeach.
what ever happened to the impending Omorsa tapes?
video recorded by Google ... it's not on youtube for some mysterious reason.
r/thathappened
I like how Trump put the Nike slogan “Just Do It” at the end of his joke.

Do braille versions of books sometimes have pages that contain nothing but
⠠⠞⠓⠊⠎ ⠏⠁⠛⠑ ⠊⠝⠞⠑⠝⠞⠊⠕⠝⠁⠇⠇⠽ ⠇⠑⠋⠞ ⠃⠇⠁⠝⠅
(that's braille for This page intentionally left blank)
I always got a kick out of the Braille floor designations on the elevator in the parking garage. The law in its majesty.
And no retards either
One of the things that Ann loves about Trump is that he naturally likes to bully people that he perceives as weak. That is true whether they are individuals or large groups.
Do the elevators at Trump Tower have Siri or Alexa in them now? Just tell the elevator what floor you want. Isn't Braille pretty much obsolete?
I can't figure out how they find the signs (I hope no blind people are reading this). And what about blind people in wheelchairs?
It was mean of Trump to pick on W and Obama. Not good to pick on the weak.

"NowIknow" proves that any Trump criticism is gospel. OK We got it.
It's like telling jokes in prison. NIK just say "Six !" and we'll all laugh.
The googlechick @14:40, after she stops herself from crying on stage, attributes to Billary an Abe Lincoln quote repeated by Utah Gov. Huntsman.
It's time we stopped coddling blindies, anyway. They've had it too easy.
I would prefer a system where the handicapped are cared for by acts of charity instead of government laws. Hard to think of a better sight than of a husband pushing his wife around town in a wheel chair.
These kinds of stories don't change anybody's opinion of anything. People who despise Trump will have their bias confirmed nicely. People who like Trump or are agnostic about him will either choose not to believe it (after all it's another second hand story about something insensitive he allegedly said decades ago) or believe it's possible he said it but... BFD? So it just ends up being a little red meat for the Trump haters at best.
We now have to go back to the 1980s for the latest petty Trump Outrage?
Proving Scott Adams' point that a significant percentage of Americans, mostly liberals/Dems, have no sense of humor.
1. Architects aren't weak and in need of gentle treatment!
2. Trump was attentive to aesthetics.
3. No blind people were there to have their feelings hurt. Trump was (it seems) annoyed by the visual clutter of something that he didn't think was ever going to be used.
4. They're scraping the bottom of the Get-Trump barrel. If this was ANYTHING AT ALL, we'd have heard about it earlier.
5. Ridiculous tattling going on now.
Bullshit.
>>Tucson airport in the 60s had a sign "No Dogs except seeing-eye dogs"
Our local McDonalds has a sign that says "Braille and picture menus available".
In the drive through.
Who is that sign for?
There once was a hooker named Gail
With her prices tattooed on her tail.
Beneath her behind
For the sake of the blind
Was a duplicate version in Braille.
The author is lying. No one remembers conversations like that 30 years later. They might remember their own impression of things, but the story as written (with quotes?!) is bullshit.
4. They're scraping the bottom of the Get-Trump barrel. If this was ANYTHING AT ALL, we'd have heard about it earlier.
It wasn't conjured until Monday
"As a general rule, Trump thought architects and engineers were weak as compared to construction people."
Yeah, I get that. It took about six months working civil litigation for me to realize the same thing. The guy you want to talk to drives a pickup truck and wears boots. He's skilled, knowledgeable, and a quick learner. The professional architects and engineers, on the other hand, were and are very hard to talk to. It seems like half your job is making sure they don't talk too much so they don't look like idiots. I've heard other lawyers say the same thing, in more colorful language, in private.
Democrats are ready, willing, and able to double your taxes with programs like a guaranteed monthly income of up to $1500. opening the borders wider still, and making sure the illegals share in all the benefits.
Get to the polls in November.
Did you know the Democrats killed thousands of US citizens in Puerto Rico? When pumpkin spice visited, only ten were dead, and now it's three thousand. Obviously, only Democrats count the people who die after the incident. With Republican reasoning, shooting guns and setting off bombs doesn't kill, it's victim being in the wrong place afterward that kills them.
Important
>> guaranteed monthly income of up to $1500. opening the borders wider still, and making sure the illegals share in all the benefits.
It will probably be illegal for US citizens to accept the benefit. :)
So now we go from things Trump allegedly said to things someone told me he allegedly said.
Democrats sought to blame Florence on Trump, so he raised his mighty pinky finger, and BEHOLD!!! Florence has stalled on its path towards the Carolinas and is dowgraded to a Cat 2 on its way to a tropical storm.
BOW DOWN BEFORE THE POWER OF TRUMP!

Good job we have Braille fonts so blind people can use computers. Is there a Comic Sans equivalent?
So this might have been a weak architect, whining to Res about how mean Trump is, so Res can blab years later.
We should all be working on our favourite jokes by Trump, as opposed to Trump jokes. I like this one about blind people in a high rise with lots of glass. I like the reported one "I could have had Tom Brady for a son-in-law. Instead I've got Jared." Mean to Jared, in a way mean to Ivanka (although it implies she could still do better; the family is hardly known for its opposition to divorce); surely not for public consumption. But funny.
As a Canadian I love this one. Justin Trudeau: how can you consider tariffs against Canadian goods to be a matter of national security? Trump: Didn't you guys burn down the White House? I love that, especially with Canadian nerds weighing in: it wasn't us, it was British regulars. I'm pretty sure I can remember Canadians boasting: we're not as small and irrelevant as many Americans think; we burned down the White House!
I read an explanation somewhere (honest!) about why there is Braille on ATM drive-up windows. It's simply that when the law mandated it for walk-up ATMs it was cheaper just to make or modify them all that way than to differentiate between them.
I do really appreciate Trump's anti-elitism. He has this amazing ability to generate endless hatred from people who have very high opinions of themselves, those who went to the correct schools and move within the correct social circles. As well as people who admire those same "elites". It's pretty amusing watching them spew venom impotently.
Has anyone ever looked into the use of Braille in public spaces?
The subway stations in my city are full of Braille signs and it is impossible to imagine the scenario where they are useful to anyone. Like the fire alarm. A blind person would need to know where the fire alarm is in order to read the Braille notice that it is a fire alarm. In case of fire, there is a 0.0% chance that those bumps on the handle will be helpful.
Don't even get me started on handicapped parking at the beach.
But what happened after that (assuming it happened at all)? Was the Braille removed? Is it there now? If not and if it's the law, are there decades of citations and fines?
As a general rule, Trump thought architects and engineers were weak as compared to construction people.
He had apparently never read, The Fountainhead,.
Ann, this is who Trump is at his core and at every other layer of his being. You have a three year record (this blog) of high Trump admiration. There is no one close that you have heaped more positive posts on. You like that he is a strongman and a bully. At least be honest with yourself. You are not fooling anyone else pretending otherwise given the record you have developed here.
Obama used to rob blind people on the street to pay for his State minimum-liability car insurance.
Wait a minute, if you were blind how would you know that there was a Braille sign around?
"I wrote in the Trump Tower offering plan that the marble in the bathrooms was luxurious when I knew it was really made with pieces of marble and crushed marble along with glue called an aggregate."
This is the sort of thing that says far more about its author than about its target, for to describe her criticism of Pres. Trump as "petty" seems excessive priase. Instead of discussion or criticism of the President's work we get visceral dislike of the man himself. So, Barbara Res has a gut-level dislike of Trump and all his works, but, this is a public essay and why should anyone else care about Barbara Res' gut?
Although if we take the criticism at face value: I don't know what material was used in the bathrooms in Trump Tower, although it wouldn't surprise me if they used something like this because (1) it costs less, and (2) it looks good enough, and (3) it requires less maintenance.
After all, natural marble is a relatively soft, porous stone that can and will stain badly unless it's sealed. And if it is sealed then the sealant has to be re-applied periodically. Whereas the composite material most likely doesn't require any maintenance at all.
Then again, I don't really care what materials were used for this in Trump Tower; why should I? Even if I were buying a unit there, why would I care if something might be ersatz? Especially if the ersatz looked OK and might be superior for other reasons?
And as for the Braille, who even knows if the incident even happened as described here? And even if it did, why should/would anyone care?
If Barbara Res wants to be president she should run for the office. And if she has substantive criticism of what the President has done (or intends to do) she could offer that. But, this sort of petty "I just don't like that man!" criticism reflects poorly on the author. Is she always this petty, and does she really think her visceral emotions should be the ruler by which others are measured?
A blind person would need to know where the fire alarm is in order to read the Braille notice that it is a fire alarm
...and you risk pulling the fire alarm.
remember! you can say ANYTHING about Trump, without ANYTHING to back it up; as long as it's derogatory
Hearsay may be inadmissible testimony in court but it's grist for the media mill.
BTW, tcrosse: Great poem! ;-D
Oh, you can "see" a use? Wow, very ableist language there, Althouse.
Finally some Grounds for Impeachment. ..abuse of the handicapped.
Having an actual marble bathroom floor would be terrible. It stains like crazy.
Why am I reminded of Michelle O's "You will be made to care" remarks?
I don't care. Don't make me care. I don't WANT to care. Do not FORCE me to care.
I'm supposed to CARE about what someone who I haven't heard of says that Trump said 30+ years ago, filtered through the memory of someone who seems to loathe Trump. My immediate reaction is "Why in the hell should I care?" I'm supposed to CARE that Trump as a developer in the '80s wasn't the genteel soul of decorum as demanded by the PC crowd in 2018?
Right....
The past is another country - they do things differently there.
I'm looking at today - where Trump's got China to come to the negotiating table on tariffs, where NK may or may not be dropping their nukes but their latest big military parade was notably missing their ICBMs, where unemployment is at record lows and employment for blacks and hispanics at record highs - and I'm supposed to go "Ewww, Trump's ICKY!" and reflexively vote Dems back into power.
Yeah, not happening. I was hoping Trump wouldn't be the utter disaster Hillary would have been, and so far he's been exceeding my wildest hopes and expectations. The Dems have to offer something pretty damn tasty to get me to vote for one, and recycled hate and bile isn't it.
>>Wait a minute, if you were blind how would you know that there was a Braille sign around?
"Are you illiterate? Write to this address and we'll send you a free booklet to read."
An excellent appraisal of Trump and America.
Succinct conclusion? Trump is...irrelevant.
Ah hearsay. Next thing we will learn is that Julie Jones was in the fifth grade at Trump's elementary school and she was told (although she was not present) that little Donnie Trump said that his fourth grade teacher was a big meanie.

But, then again....
Are all the white liberal late-night talk show hosts going to lead with this exact same story tonight?
The progress of communicable diseases and developing accessible technologies deprecated the value of Braille, and, apparently, NY Daily News.
Regular people get the sentiment/feeling/angst that Trunp is expressing and the so-called elites either don’t get it or don’t care, they just want to look down their noses at us deplorables and make themselves feel superior.
This is a tiny example: Blind people won’t pay the extra for the view and so won’t live in the building. Yes, a few blind people might visit someone and so the law requires the money be spent even though it’s disproportionate in its usefulness.
Here’s a bigger example: I live on one of many small courts connecting to a long street that goes up a hill. On the other side of the street is a large park. Years ago (under Obama) the city changed all curbs where the courts met the long street, so that there were wheelchair ramps at each court all the way up the hill. At 2 per Court there must have been 20-30 new wheelchair ramps.
A big expense. Quite disproportionate. I had never, up until that time, seen a single person in a wheelchair going up or down the hill (And I still haven’t seen one since). And the other side of the street (along the park) is one continuous run of sidewalk so anyone could have used that side of the street for free.

They're scraping the bottom of the Get-Trump barrel. If this was ANYTHING AT ALL, we'd have heard about it earlier.
I think you miss the point. This is not so much Get-Trump as it is further evidence that Trump is a total asshole. True, being an asshole is not a high crime or misdemeanor, but it helps chip away at his support on the fringes.
You however, could find out that Trump did shoot someone on Fifth Ave, and you would say, "what's the big deal? It's not like the guy died. Anyway, he must have been an elite if he was on Fifth Ave. He is just connecting with his base and trolling the libs."
What gets me and makes me stop reading is this description of the "marble" in the bathrooms "made with pieces of marble and crushed marble along with glue called an aggregate." Maybe it is bad writing or MS Res isn't as smart as she wants to be seen. Aggregate is the definition of the product itself i.e. 2.a material or structure formed from a loosely compacted mass of fragments or particles. Or you can call the individual pieces or fragments, aggregate. The "glue" is cement, or resin or binder or whatever.
Wow, another hearsay of hearsay story. Typical journalistic standards.

Actually, we go from things Trump allegedly said to someone's decades-old hazy recollection of things allegedly said by someone else to someone else with no indication of how long after the event allegedly occurred the second somebody else reported it to Res, who by the way admits to repeatedly being dishonest in her dealings with Trump. Doesn't mean it didn't happen as reported, but certainly raises as many questions about its accuracy as it does about Trump's alleged behavior.
Also, from the byline of the article - "Res, former vice president in charge of construction at the Trump Organization, is author of 'All Alone on the 68th Floor: How One Woman Changed the Face of Construction.'" So Trump in the early 80's employs a woman vice president in charge of construction, an act so revolutionary that Res, "alone," changed the face of construction? Proof that Trump is a mysoginist!!

I find it weird the way people CARE about what people SAID or even did 30 and 35 years ago. It doesn't matter. Its like McCain - he's dead and people are STILL talking about his being a "WAR HERO" - 45 fucking years ago! Yeah, 1973 it was just like Yesterday.

Well, if that's the way you feel....
The Braille signs like the wheelchair ramps are required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and do not have to make sense.
The Braille in elevators is one of the few mandates for signage that makes sense. The really stupid ones are the signs all over California telling you that every single building you enter is potentially cancerous. If cancer is everywhere, I have no choice but to move out of the state, so I did. As soon as I crossed the border I seem to have escaped it. No more signs - no more cancer risk, and no more income tax. Wait a minute. Maybe taxes cause cancer.
How about the incredibly helpful multiple giant labels on every extension cord. Ever read one? I wonder what the percentage is of warning labels that ever get read. There should be giant billboards along the road saying simply "Driving Kills - Get Home - Stay Home", and of course a sign on your bathroom door saying "Stay out - dangerous fall zone"
BS. Surprised this liar wasn't front-paged 2 years ago, but sure bitch. I'll file this one with the Gorilla Channel, Trump said the N word, and the tyranny of 2 scoops. At least there was tape of the Pussy talk.

Why mention Obama? Do you know he had anything to do with this city infrastructure activity?
"I mean, I can see a use: a very rich blind person might splurge on a feature that he himself cannot enjoy but he could show off to visitors."
Like an alcoholic might enjoy parties where everyone else is binge drinking, or a formerly rich person would like to hang out with super wealthy people, or someone who is recently widowed would love to hand out with newly married couples? Not likely.
There is a guy Howard Cohan ," from Palm Beach County, FL who goes around suing hotels for violations to handicap codes. He refers to himself ... as a 'tester' for discovering 'discrimination against the disabled' in public accommodations. He has filed numerous lawsuits against businesses in Chicago and across the country, many of which have been settled... Because the terms of settlement are generally not disclosed, it is unclear if the businesses made any changes as a result of the lawsuits... He is suing Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago for multiple alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, from improper grab bars in the restrooms to counters that were too tall at the hotel bar."
The "Get Trump" Squad goes back in time a lot to find little offensive nuggets re The Donald many years prior to his dynamic and successful presidency. It'd be nice if they would focus on the present, particularly the booming economy.
When the "Get Trump" Squad does focus on many of Trump's present transgressions against nature and mankind, notice how it's almost always anonymous sources:
1. Comey anonymously leaked (through a flunky) to the NYT to get a Special Counsel appointed;
2. Michael Wolff book -- mostly anon sources
3. NYT Anon opinion piece by secret resistance warrior
4. Bob Woodward book -- the father of all such "fly on the wall" reporting, with the Mother of all anon sources, Mr. Deep Throat.
These are some serious weasels.
This is not so much Get-Trump as it is further evidence that Trump is a total asshole
Freder thinks accusations are evidence.
Thanks, big guy.
Has anyone seen braille in an elevator?
Not me.
Obviously, its the sort of thing you put in when a tenant requests it.
My God. If this is true, this Trump guy might be ...kind of an asshole!
This story will surely shake the political landscape.
I've notice the 'trump is a bully' meme (?) going around, and that we shouldn't cave to bullies. Uh, when your boss tells you to have that 'report on ants' done by Friday, is he a bully?
Then again, I'm not sure what 'bullying' trump has done while he's in office. Hard negotiating, yes (because that is a requirement for the job), but not bullying.
Any time you want to make someone look bad, just report a joke or ironical/satirical remark as 100 percent cold-stone serious.
Did you know Henny youngman hated his wife, and asked people to take her.
Horrible!
Has anyone seen braille in an elevator?
Yes. Embossed in stainless steel below each floor button.
Who doesn't think their boss was/is an asshole? That's a requirement for an effective leadership role - like it or not. The touchy feely stuff that liberals keep going on about is actually bullshit, and when a boss is not touchy feely then they are perceived as bad/wrong/bullies.
(I realize that 'touchy feely' may not be what liberals actually want in the #MeToo era...that actually makes me laugh!)
Pumpkin spice is a performance artist and showman in the lineage of John Freemont, Abe Lincoln, US Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Herbert Hoover, and Ronald Reagan. Some were good presidents despite their relative inexperience, some were not. All of the others thoroughly basked in their bad press, which Trumparrhea seems incapable of doing.
He has filed numerous lawsuits against businesses in Chicago and across the country, many of which have been settled...
This is a business plan that ran into Clint Eastwood some years ago and got punked.
Congress passed the act ten years ago after a moving lobbying campaign by disabled people, and it has been universally praised for giving the disabled access to public places.
But business owners say unscrupulous lawyers cruise shopping malls looking for violations, then sue before owners can correct them.
Donna Batelaan is a wheelchair-bound business owner who was sued before she could repaint an improperly marked parking space.
She testified, "It cost us less than a hundred dollars to correct the infractions, $2,000 in attorney fees."
Like Eastwood, she wants Congress to give owners 90 days to correct violations before they can be sued.
The lawyers in this racket are even suing each other.
Louie recently had a revealing falling-out with one of his lawyers, Paul Rein—the Oakland attorney who had sued Clint Eastwood. Louie filed an action alleging that the bathroom at Rein’s office violated ADA rules, its toilet two inches too close to the wall and its grab bars “not positioned right.” In a complaint to the state bar, he called Rein “a 'set-up' specialist who on four occasions asked me to visit four businesses in my wheelchair to provide a pretext for suing them.”
When Trump was in Chicago negotiating the purchase of the Sun Times property, he pointed to a bus and asked a pedestrian if that bus went to the Loop. The pedestrian said yes. He then said he though it went Beep Beep.
Racist code no doubt.
That’s it. Impeach him now.

You know what's interesting - in Hong Kong, a city I love, there are these strips on the sidewalk (in the middle) made of brass for the blind to follow. In shopping centers too - in a big hallway there's a strip of brass running down the middle for the blind to follow with a cane. There's braille everywhere. There are blind massage parlors, as in a blind person massages you, as it's supposed to be a better massage.
In Hong Kongese culture (Cantonese), and Mandarin Chinese culture, the blind are traditionally revered - like many things in the East, being blind is bad/good. Or good/bad.
An interesting contrast to the West where being blind is purely a disability to be pitied. I hate pitying disabled people, but it's so hard not to. I would think that they wouldn't want to be pitied but I don't want to put my thoughts in their head. A guy I know was born with small arms - he's an architect and married a beautiful girl and they've got a perfectly formed little son together. I very much doubt he wants to be pitied even though you know his life has been much harder than your own.
Over the years I've asked several blind people on the subway if they needed help getting out of the station - only one said yes and he really only needed help finding the stairs. Once he got them he said "thank you!" and went on his way. One guy I asked was offended.
Taking the subway would be hard if you were blind, I'd think.
I dated a very attractive blind woman once. She was hot! Also, that extensive Braille training came in handy when handling my Johnson.

women’s mons venus that say “Cunnilingus is knows by the State of California to cause head and neck cancers.”
Sex educators knew for decades, and did not adequately warn, that cunnilingus could cause mouthanoma. If you or a loved one have mouthanoma or another cunnilingus related cancer, call us now. It does not matter if you have been socially liberal. It doesn't even matter if you have been socially conservative. The courts have ordered sex educators and humanitarian pornographers to set aside one trillion dollars to compensate victims of cunnilingus.
Congress passed the act ten years ago after a moving lobbying campaign by disabled people
well, NO.
Congress passed this act because Tom Harkin (Senator, British Virgin Islands) wanted it because his brother was deaf; and he was such a worthless piece of shit (Tom, not the brother), that he used his brother to force more government regs on people. At the time, people said that it would get completely out of control; but Tom said. "Oh, you just wait and see!"
No builder like Trump is going to look at a new stainless steel elevator panel that costs thousands of dollars and ask for the embossed braille to be removed.

Most of those you mention were not performance artists. Quite the opposite.

the ADA was passed in 1990. So what law required the Braille in the 1980s?
And since when does the "architect" design the small details inside of an elevator. Isn't that decor?
@Althouse: "5. Ridiculous tattling going on now."
Of course. But, as you can tell from the eager lefty endorsements of the tattling on this very blog, nothing useful is ridiculous to the left. Your personal feelings have nothing to do with it, except insofar as your represent the middle of the electorate that may yet turn against the Dems.

"Trumpists celebrate their collective victimology."
Hmm. I'm celebrating 4.2% GDP growth, low unemployment and the impending confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh.
Maybe, I'm not a Trumpist, I reckon.
I truly get the Trump distinction between architects and construction people. Anyone who has done a brand new project, commercial or residential, understands this. Good construction guys know how fix the architect's work. Architects design things that cost more and add no value, because they know nothing about costs other than more or less.
After an architect did a commercial remodel that priced out at $650,000, well over budget, the GC and I went through and turned it into a $250,000 plan.
I have also had ADA inspector then note that one bathroom had a sink that was 1" too high and had to be corrected. To get a commode the right distance from the wall, we had to unbolt it and pivot it away from the wall. This was on a pre-ADA bathroom that was re-modeled.

When I was stationed at Dover Air Force base, being under 21 I would frequent a Dunkin Donuts, the employees of which I became friendly with. In the seating area of the restaurant there was a roughly 12 inch by 12 inch sign that said 'No smoking' with braille letters underneath. The wall it was on was probably 20 feet long and 10 or 12 feet high. Now just how in hell was any blind person supposed to find those braille letters informing them smoking was forbidden?
That was a good eye-opener to the absurdity of this world for my 19-year-old self.

I suspect the requirement for braille in public places is not so much for sightless folk than it is for the "legally" blind; those who have some, very limited, vision.
And since when does the "architect" design the small details inside of an elevator.
It looks like the ADA designs the elevators now:
access-board.gov
ADA compliance
Has anyone ever suggested that maybe this is Trumps way of challenging people?
He builds buildings. Trump has to know that braille is a requirement. Shouting at an engineer or an architect to make sure they say "no, we have to have this. It is the law," might be Trump's way to make sure they are paying attention to the little stuff.
It is like the brown M&Ms in the Van Halen contracts.
To be fair Steve Jobs would berate employees 35 years ago as well. But he is lionized. I wonder what is the difference between the two men?
Again, Trump is/was a developer, not a builder, and certainly not a contractor.
Everyone knows the importance of eyesight. Look how Stevie Wonder is so dependent on others to function and get around. Look how cats rely on their superior eyesight and night vision to hunt. A blind person dare not drive a car until Elon Musk stops smoking dope and gets his self-driving Testla going. Diabetes is a major illness and a major cause of blindness. It's difficult to control and treat. Trump spends unnecessary billions on armaments when he should look for a cure for diabetes and other maladies. How can he "look" if he is blind in the head. So there is mental ignorance, which is a form of blindness if you will. Trump suffers from that in spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs. He's not playing with a full deck, and at this stage not a hard dick, either. I haven't the time to explain how an obnoxious cretin like him became president, but it has to do with ignorant hard-right people that Hillary referred to as "the deplorables." Millions suffer or die when fascists gain power in a country. We are facing a fascist Supreme Court, and a country ruled by billionaire elites like the Koch brothers, and the Trumps. The immediate problem is stopping Trump. I claim to be the author of the anonymous op-ed in the New York Times. Not literally but in heart and soul, like millions of others who want a just country run by capable people.

The Peter principle is a concept in management theory formulated by Laurence J. Peter in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence."
The Peter Principle didn't anticipate a man like Donald Trump who has no principles save greed, and self-aggrandizement
I suspect this bottom of the barrel mud slinging is coming from some very angry CIA Media Bosses who are in a furious panic for Trump's guys Blinding their spy satellites and servers that were giving real time access to the Brits MI5 and the CIA's secret military forces in their many secret bases. All of the others thoroughly basked in their bad press, which Trumparrhea seems incapable of doing.
I'm concluding that the most recent electoral college outcome was a tremendous shock for you. Your comprehension skills evidence elitism. That's rather sad.

Yes. Embossed in stainless steel below each floor button.

The elevator company--like Otis-- designs the control panels, I would think.

This is a formal discipline for this, it is known as “value engineering.” This is SOP on many projects. I think GSA often requires a value engineering phase on government construction contracts. I would say the Braille is just one of many things Trump questioned.r

Men are such perverts.
The professional architects and engineers, on the other hand, were and are very hard to talk to. It seems like half your job is making sure they don't talk too much so they don't look like idiots. I've heard other lawyers say the same thing, in more colorful language, in private.
Engineers and architects don't think much of lawyers either. An undergraduate engineering degree requires a lot more intelligence than a JD. I know a lot of stupid lawyers, but no stupid engineers.
The ADA like all other laws was passed by politicians who do not have to think. They just add a clause that the details required to comply with the law will be filled in by the pertinent federal agencies. These are headquartered in D.C. and vicinity, so the young interns that finally wind up being charged with working out these details go outside and look around and do their best, but unavoidably what they come up with is based on the conditions they see around them in Washington, D.C.
Thus the details and specifications they came up with for handicap ramps may be well and good down in the flatlands, but is simply not always physically possible to comply with in hilly or mountainous country. In Albuquerque, the "handicapped community" some time ago made a big stir bout the ramps not meeting the criteria, which wound up with an agreement that anytime a contractor got ready to build handicap ramps, he would lay them out as best he could, call in, and a committee would come out to meet with him, inspect each location, and approve his layout, or agree on what the best other physically possible solution would be, having just three physical dimensions and time to work with in this universe.
This naturally got rather bothersome very quickly, and everybody soon lost interest.

What do motorcycles have to do with it?
If you are blind, you are (I hope!) not driving up in the drive through lane!
If you can't read, the sign telling you there are picture menus available won't do you any good.
Are you saying a sighted driver might have a blind person with them, and would tell them they have a Braille menu? Or an illiterate, and say "Here, look at the pictures and point?"
Really???
Why wouldn't they just say "What do you want?" and order it for them?
I would also note that the sign saying they had Braille menus had no Braille on it!

Not sure what the point is re replying to Trumpit, but here goes, out of pure humanity -
The Peter Principle is a critique of hierarchical meritocratic promotion.
One avoids the Peter Principle by hiring outside the hierarchy, getting outsiders.
Trump is very much an outsider that has not made his bones in government service at all.
So no Peter Principle.
"I know a lot of stupid lawyers, but no stupid engineers."
Same here. I know a lot of very bright engineers (mechanical, electrical, civil and chemical) who have a hierarchy of engineering intelligence. The consensus seems to be that Industrials are at the bottom, just above civil engineers.
EEs tend to think they are at the top. From my experience consulting with DoD contractors, I cannot disagree. Their stuff really is rocket science.
According to Wikiquote, Picasso's last reported words were "And now I must go back to work":
"After the meal, while pouring wine into a friend's glass, Picasso said, Drink to me. Drink to my health. You know I can't drink any more. A little later, about 11:30 P.M., he left his guests, saying, And now I must go back to work. He was up painting until 3:00 A.M. That morning Picasso woke at 11:30, unable to move. By 11:40 he was dead.."
What I really want to know, and I don't know a blind person to ask, 'How do the blind persons know where on the wall to run their fingers to find the braille in the first place?'
Why do people here think braille buttons would cost more than non braille buttons?
When making the button mold or die the braille dots are cut in. It probably adds less than a minute to the process.
The millions of braille buttons are molded or stamped for the same price as non braille buttons.
Non braille buttons would require additional molds and Downtime to change them i or out. It would probably double the cost of all buttons.
I call bullshit on the story.
John Henry
"I know a lot of stupid lawyers, but no stupid engineers."
You should broaden your knowledge base and check out software engineers - I just retired after 30 years in the business and I know lots of stupid ones.
The braille isn't on the buttons--it's beneath.
Pure engineers tend to be by far the most intelligent people I've ever personally met. They also have a propensity toward being socially awkward, with some rare exceptions of course. They may not always be able to relate well to normies, not all of them are able to quickly "dumb down" an explanation or description. This sort of issue is most apparent in designing products for normal people. A user interface that can make perfect sense to an engineer can be completely impenetrable for a normal person. Similarly a description in a user manual that was written by an engineer can also be challenging for a regular human to parse.
There is also braille on the walls in many locations around a building. And I still want to know how blind persons know where to run their fingers for that.
Trump had the building custodians rub feces on the braille and added a final line of braille--"Smell your fingers."
Bastard.
ou should broaden your knowledge base and check out software engineers
Now you’ve stepped in it.
I did user interfaces for several years. The main problem isn't the software person implementing it - it's the PM who has a bullet list of every feature from every competitor and wants it all implemented whether it makes any sense or not.
The best situations occur when there is a good human factors group who work with actual end users to design the interface. At least that has been my experience.
Very good, Darrell. Funny!
tim in vermont - Nope, I'm a big guy and take any heat that comes my way. I spent the years after the military in the software\hardware business and have lots of experience with folks who should never have been let near a computer, let alone program for them.

Re laws on braile etc.
Before ADA there we state and city building code, mostly based on a national building code published by a private organization in Texas.
They started putting it in in the late 70s
So by the early 80s cities and states started adopting it.
ADA was probably largely unnecessary

Ada largely unnecessary with respect to building codes

Or on the drive-thru ATMs.
Why are there no braille warnings on plastic laundry bags or cigarette packs or cigar boxes or on surf flags at the beach? What about on microwave popcorn bags. This is a bigger problem than we thought

Trump is homophobic too, since I'm pretty sure most architects are gay. Designing buildings really be done by engineers, but most of them don't have enough froufrou.
For years people hopped in wheelchairs and checked into older motels and then sued when doors were too narrow, no curb cuts etc. Good business for a while.
And you will note an electric lift on every single lip of every hotel in America. Cost of around 30 grand each.

Given the persistent rumors of Hillary's proclivities over the years, who says it's exclusively for men?
I still want to know how blind people know where to 'look' for all the braille I see in buildings these days. Sometimes in the middle of a wall in the middle of a hall. Is there some general guideline on where to place it? I can get the braille labels on and near elevators - but in hallways?
Snort. Cookie linking to Counterpunch.
Yeah. I'm allll over that.
My wife is a civil engineer. One day she came home and complained about her boss who was upset and whiney at her at her about something she did on one of her projects. She concluded with. "I knew he'd get upset when I did it. I just knew it!"
"How did you know?"
She responded with venom: "Because he's an architect."

I don't have my glasses on in the shower and can't tell shampoo from hand cream. Some tactile id would be useful.
