Ha! I heard this recently and assumed it was The Kinks for some reason. It's been a favorite ever since. I'm glad the boys still get along.

I loved The Kinks, but they've had their time(s). I recently read Ray's (second?) autobiography: Americana. He's been wandering since the band's breakup, and if he and his brother are sparking reunification rumors, perhaps it's because they can't think of anything else to do. I hope reunification is not in the cards.

I can completely grok this. I don't like my brother either...he's a dick. But I do love him and we do share a lot of the same interests.

No one wants to see guys in their 70's play pop music.

I like the Kinks music, but I've never much been interested in them as people. I just don't look to aging rock stars for any useful lessons on how to manage life and it's pitfalls. Now dead R&B singers are where to go for moral guidance.

Has anyone compiled the mortality statistics among performers of various types of music, Rap singers must be the worst. Rock and R&B look about even. Pop singers seems to have a normal to even lengthier life span. It wouldn't surprise me if opera singers have diminished life spans. The human heart can only endure so much Puccini.

Good pun but the name is pronounced same as Davis. Ray’s first autobiography is a fun read—it’ has a sci-fi dystopia setting. Everyone’s wearing gray. Ray Davies has always wandered. He’s been writing nostalgic songs since his 20s. They should reunite and your with Oasis. Whenever it gets too much for the brothers to take the stage together they could play as mixed couples.

Excuse the typo—I meant grey.

When Noel and Liam self-destruct before the American leg of the tour, they could add the Black Crows to the bill.

I remember reading an interview with Pete Townshend in the mid-Seventies in which he commented that he could not imagine The Who continuing on into old age. (Well, he was HALF right.) He felt that they could not possibly retain the zesty athleticism of their youthful performances once they were elderly, but that, on the other hand, Ray Davies and the Kinks could, in theory, go on forever, because the inside of Ray's head had always been that of an old man anyway. This seemed to me a fair comment. It has been my feeling that band reunions are frequently a bad idea. Usually, they fail to capture the old lightning. The results are, at best, mixed. The recent Stones blues covers album, for example, was really quite good - in fact, their best in over 30 years in my opinion - but the fact that they wrote none of it just points up the apparent demise of their once formidable songwriting mojo. The Beach Boys reunion album of about 6 years back had a few genuinely brilliant tracks on it, but the rest ranged from sort of listenable to awful. It would have made a great EP. What do I expect or hope for from a new (and presumably last) Kinks album? It's hard to say. I think Townshend was right about the inside of Mr. Davies' head. Perhaps the Kinks could make a legit age-appropriate "rock" album, because their image was not really all that youth-oriented even when they actually WERE youthful. Me, romantic and sentimental person that I am, I just hope that they are all happy and can bury their various hatchets and make a record that truly reflects what they actually feel and value and wish to express artistically, even if it ends up not sounding much like what most folks would think of as sounding like an old Kinks album. I hope that Ray can still come up with at least one wonderfully tender-hearted song for us to treasure and at least one really funny song, because he can be so damn witty when he wants to. I hope that Dave can cheerfully bare his heart to us, and play some fine guitar. I hope that Mick Avory can drum creatively and is given his due respect. I wish them all well, and hope that they will be satisfied with their result. God save The Kinks.

Messing. Bear, for a totally different musical style but a similar “old man trapped in a young man’s body” vibe, check out the Modern Lovers’ first and only real album l, named eponymous Ly. Entire record is terrific. Songs “Roadrnner” and “Old World” have especially made me feel that Jonathan Richman and Ray Davies were tuned to a similar galactic frequency. The “wandering” nature of Richman’s later career bears this out.

The Carter/Trump post followed by this one made me think of Donald Trump as David Watts. It breaks down a bit, I suppose, where the girls who try to go out with David Watts “can’t succeed, for he is a pure and noble breed” (which actually sounds more like lust-in-his-heart Carter). But there’s no rhyming issue, and they’re both three syllables so it basically works. I even like “Fa fa fa faa faa, faa faa faa” as a sort of covfefe-referencing thing to sing with your hands over your ears to block out Fake News.

Watched one of my favorite genres, British gangster movies, London Boulevard, which kicks off with a stirring copy of the Yardbirds Heart Full Of Soul. Really loved the Kinks when they first came out. If Ray wants to touch our souls, he needs to get back to the garden and produce songs like You Really Got Me, and, Who'll Be The Next In Line, Brit Invasion music the way God intended.
