It took you a little while to realize that the sun rises in the east...

... but eventually you overcame your presumption that the first travel photograph must be a picture of leaving, not coming back. Here's a photo from a few days ago, texted home to me by Meade who went camping and mountain biking in Colorado...

IMG_1004

... beautiful, but at a challenge level above what works for me.

To get in shape for single track, you need to ride up steep residential hills. Works for me! LIFT those legs, don't push!

But it's too hot now.

Couldn't you get an e-mountain-bike? Definitely attractive for those long uphill stretches. But no help for managing the insane downhill pitches...

I assume this is about volcels, and "boys will be masculine" and "girls will be feminine", until they meet again at the twilight's fringe.

Is Gaia right-handed? Yes, the sun rises in the east. The world turns unapologetically to the right, and the rhythms are set accordingly. That said, moving left does gain -- or lose -- an hour, a day. A kind of catastrophic anthropogenic global groundhog's moment... tomorrow never lives.

I have a mountain bike and can do beginner level (and some intermediate), but that's as much as I want to do. I have an e-bike and like it and could get an e-mountain bike and would even like that for the beginner and intermediate trails (and may do that on future trips). But Meade is at a skill level MUCH higher than mine, and even if I had the motor assist, it would be dangerous and scary for me to go along with what he was doing. I'm actually afraid to hike some trails where there's too much of a drop. It's not fun for me, and I refuse to do it.

Also he was CAMPING -- for many nights in a row. No bathroom. No shower... It was a trip designed around HIS preferences. It's like the way he didn't go to Chicago with me and stay in the Trump hotel and see Kathy Griffin and "The Cher Show" and go to museums.

This is the time of year we would be in Colorado fishing for two weeks. And yes, the night sky is beautiful in late July.

This year, our third together, we broke it up with a week in the spring and a week coming this fall. I have never seen the Rockies in full fall foliage and am so excited about the trip, I could plotz.

On our trip in the spring, we spent an inordinate amount of drive time discussing where we want to live (aka retire), and never could pin down a location that had everything. Mayhap we'll do the Colorado in summer, Texas in winter retirement.

I go CAMPING for many nights in a row. No bathroom, no showers.... Sometimes for as long as two weeks. That first shower is the most pleasurable thing in the world.

What, one can't take a picture out the back window of a west-bound car at dawn? Or stop at an exit or rest area and face east to take a picture of the sunrise?

I do day hikes. I prefer a warm bed and a hot shower... and a toilet.
I cannot stand being cold, and a night in the high wilderness would be cold, even in summer.

I'd trade the discomfort to look at the stars and the milky way, though.

The couple is a synthesis of individuals that are equal and complementary. So, Meade hikes and Althouse blogs, while other times they hike and blog together, and there is trust and harmony at Meadehouse.

Very nice. This is what a good adult relationship is like.

In my thoughts and how our own marriage works...not trying to put words into any one else's mouth: Respect for the wishes, preferences, space of the other. Not being forced to go (for example) camping/biking if you don't feel like it or being forced to go to events in Chicago if you don't want to. But still participating IF it means very much to your partner. Freedom to be your separate selves when wanted and needed, yet still be very much a team. Enjoyment in the pleasure of your partner in things that may not really appeal to you. Enjoyment in doing things together that you both value and find happiness in doing.

Sometimes doing activities alone, can bring a couple together in more meaningful ways than always being joined at the hip.

I was born and raised in Toronto, where I spent a lot of time on my road bike, and after university I moved to Vancouver. I was introduced to mountain biking when I first arrived out west and riding through mountains, camping overnight, and then riding back to vehicle next day are some of my favourite memories. The people I rode with were way above my ability, I broke both sides of my collarbone in two separate wipeouts, but I loved it.

That phrase was an interesting mind bender and a reminder that with all social media sharing and "blogging" what we are shown is always an edited version of reality. May I dare use a current cliché, a "curated" view? Ironicially for me, because forty years ago only museum professionals used that word, now it's become a pop culture term. My mother was sure there would never be jobs for curators, now everybody's a curator.

Yeah, pretty dumb of me not to realize that was a sunrise and he was heading east. I just got up and not had a cup of coffee yet. You have been blogging early.

I have two bikes and carry them all around on my white CR-V, but I don't mountain bike. I figure at my age (67) I am too old. In the last few years of working I had 3 different co-workers suffer very serious injuries while mountain biking here in East TN or SW VA, all could have been killed. Each one ran into a tree: one got a broken collar bone, one got a crushed ankle. and one got a compound leg fracture. I stay on our local bike trails or some of the nearby rails-to-trails conversions, and even on those I have had a couple of accidents, but not too serious.

Admire Meade for doing this on his own. More power to him. I am leaving for one of our trails in a few minutes, trying to get about 20 miles in each day while we are having some beautiful weather.

It assumes a frame of reference: toward the Earth and north.

Social media has become a lot people just showing what they are doing right now, but this is a blog and it's not about showing friends and family what I'm doing. I've always been conscious of my privacy and my safety. I'm being selective. I probably wouldn't say anything about what I'm doing personally if I didn't have photographs that I thought were interesting enough to show.

Very different terrain from what's in Meade's photo. 18 Road is full of great flow singletrack, I highly recommend it.

Since Meade is back in Wisconsin; here's a Wisconsin angle.
Some judge ruled that Wisconsin has to pay for Medicaid patients to get 'sex
reassignment' surgery . Because they have 'dysphoria' or some such. IF you're a man, on welfare; and you think your breasts are too small; the state has to pay to get them pumped up. But, on the other hand; if you're a woman, and you think your breasts are too small: you have to pay for your elective surgery yourself. This seems to be sex discrimination ! ! !

Here's short bio's of the welfare people getting the free surgery
Flack, who has cerebral palsy, uses a motorized wheelchair and relies on Supplemental Security Income for the disabled as his sole support. He first identified as a boy at age 5, according the lawsuit. Makenzie is also is disabled and relies on Supplemental Security Income. She has been living as a woman since 2012.

Sorry, but; if you're in a wheelchair and are a palsy,,, why does the state have to provide you with a penis ? If a tree falls in the woods, but NO ONE wants to date it; does it really matter what equipment the tree has?

I see that Joe Biden’s niece Caroline got probation for running up over $100,000 of charges on someone else’s credit card. JUST ONCE I would like a senior Democrat, or someone closely related to a senior Democrat, sent to prison for a serious crime. Could we maybe stop with the two-tiered justice system sometime, someday?

Great pic from Fruita. Nice to see so much of the trail from a high vantage point like that.

Meade will have to come in here and tell you whether the photo in my post is Crested Butte. That was one of the places where he rode. I'm impressed if you recognized it from (what?) the shape of the mountains.

Bless your heart, Steven Cooper. I have no idea what you want out of this blog experience, but I hope you're getting it.

Honest question, could you act normal if you chose and this is just you unburdening yourself, or are you like this all the time?

Is it the pain that makes you weird? My mother is being overtaken by arthritis and while she's still and will always be wonderful, I fear the experience is warping her.

We are out in Colorado right now - traveled here primarily to see Tedeschi Trucks band at Red Rock on Saturday and Sunday - but headed up to Steamboat to spend a few days before heading back down to the Morrison area. This is actually my first time in Steamboat during the summer - I have been coming here since 2006 for winter skiing. I have been to Colorado in the summer, but it was many years ago. I forgot about the (I will call them) mountain hummingbirds - there are so many and they make such a delightful chirping / tweeting noise right outside the condo.
Yesterday I tried downhill mountain biking for the first time. I have done some single track around Madison (using my fat tire bike), specifically at CamRock - but nothing like this, 2200 feet downhill. It was exhilarating and I would like to try it again. It certainly gives me a little more confidence for mountain biking back home(maybe not a good thing). Of course wearing elbow / knee / shin pads and a full helmet adds to the confidence level. There were 4 riders and 1 instructor in my group - of the 20 people taking lessons yesterday, I was the only women and my instructor admitted that at 62, I was his oldest women student ever!

@Ann Althouse

I don't normally have much success with photography, but that one came out nicely! It minimizes how steep the descents are immediately down the trail - Joe's Ridge is pretty spooky in a few spots with lots of exposure on both sides in addition to the downhill aspect.

I'm not sure it's the shape of the mountains that reminds me of Crested Butte so much as the wide verdant valleys bordered with medium-sized ridges (or maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see, I haven't been to CB in a long time and would like to, once my 2yo son gets old to enjoy adventures like that!).

@Linda

Those are two things I love about this state! The hummingbirds (I have three feeders around my house and you can hear them all day long), and how biking in these mountains makes everything else feel like... practice. Unless you live near Whistler in CA, that is.

Had a great time. Many great rides. The new CRV camper worked like a dream, great skies for star (and planet) gazing, peak bloom of alpine wildflowers. Here's a pretty good video of one of the trails I rode in Eagle. I'll try to get to Fruita on another trip when temperatures cool down some. Looks like fun. Maybe next spring.

My campsite in the posted photo was on U.S. Forest Service land above Sylvan Lake which was closed because they are rebuilding the dam after 70 years. Here is a pretty good article on dispersed camping in National Forests in case anyone here is interested. Camping on Forest Service land above Steamboat Springs was my favorite. Buffalo Pass.

Can barely wait to go back.

Thanks, Steve. Let me delete a bunch of stuff I wrote that may not serve you, and just say this: You make me appreciate my great good fortune, and for this I am truly grateful. It's practically a motto with me that "things can always be worse," but as with religion, one must not fall into mere lip service.

Happily my mother is not at the extremity you depict, though I look ahead with apprehension. She is not hospitalized and mostly runs her own household. Sadly, she is one of those who resents and detests the necessity of medicine, and rejects most of the few remedies suitable to her condition.

I must continue to insist, to abjure you, to aid others in the digestion of your logorrhea by the use of paragraphs, which provide not only white space but an order, a direction to your stream of thought. People who do not paragraph are in my experience universally neuroatypical. Surely I am not the first to tell you this?

Thank you again for your kind words and thoughts. If I continue to offend I'm sorry; I think of myself as typically being kind, but we never see ourselves as others see us, do we?
