"Can someone do an image of the Gadsden flag with the words 'Don't Meddle With Me'?"

I asked, in the comments this morning's post about Trump's all-caps tweet, which ends with me saying "Meddling. We openly meddle and yet demand not to be meddled with."

The commenter Rob came through:

Thanks!

Don't meddle and the image of the rattlesnake is ridiculous and takes away the meaning of the original flag. Meddle is a weak word. Tread is a strong word.

Meddling with a snake is likened to poking at it with a stick, teasing or otherwise annoying, from a distance. The don't meddle with me sentiment, is just a way to ask to be left alone.

The don't TREAD on me is is a direct threat. When you tread on a snake you are now it its territory. Up direct and personal Not a pussyfooting namby pamby don't meddle plea. Don't tread on me...don't mess with me....don't fuck with me..... or ELSE you WILL be bitten by a venomous snake. There WILL be consequences. Bad ones.

The flag was just fine as it was. Make up your own flag.

It's cute, in an internet-meme sort of way, although it doesn't quite measure up to the AK-47 on the (real) flag of Mozambique.

What are we to make of the meaning? Is it a joke on "meddling"? Should we think that all of the talk of meddling is unserious? I'm not clear on which Trump answer supports that notion, or ridicules it. It depends where the second hand is, right?

Instead of General Gadsden's rattlesnake, should we, uh, have a flag bearing the image of a 400-lb. guy in a basement with a computer? But that would be a different joke, right?

France's meddling
I read last weekend that (also Bourbon) Spain activated their fleet to threaten the Brits, who prioritized their Caribbean sugar islands cash cow over blockading us, all because they had let their navy languish after the Seven Years War. The combined fleets were about equal in size if not effectiveness to the British one.

First I heard Spain was even involved.

Speaking of meddlers (in elections both foreign and domestic) I see where Trump is considering pulling the security clearances of Comey, Clapper, Rice, McCabe and Brennan. In light of Mueller's indictment of Russian army officers for "hacking" the DNC computers, maybe Trump could propose a deal: Putin lets Russian hackers appear in US courts to answer charges and Trump delivers up Brennan, Nuland and other Obama officials suspected of meddling in Russian elections to Russian justice.

Now that's gonna put a stop to everyone meddling in elections!

What would happen if the Ukraines, Israelis, Europeans, and countless south and central american countries indicted Brennan, Clapper, Obama and all the others who have meddled in their elections? What if Libya indicted Hillary or Egypt indicted Obama? How would we respond? Think of it, there are probably very few elections around the world that we haven't meddled in in some way or other.

Has Mueller really thought this indicted-foreign-national activity though? If it becomes an accepted practice, the US will be in for a lot of hurt and a lot of people won't be able to travel to a lot of places with extradition treaties.

Otherwise, in the end, Rosensstein gets fired and a Trump ally is put in as the DOJ #2 and forces the Mueller hack team of lefties to come clean....assuming we don't get Rosenstein-ed again....which is possible depending on the where the Senate is.

The Founders themselves debated that and the anti-slavery advocates knew the only choice they had was compromise with the Southern states or lose the founding.

It's easy to sit here now and judge them for that.

Or, story my sister told me about her time in Malaysia. She fired her amah for neglecting the children and the amah threatened to put a Malay curse on her, so my sister told her she had better not even think about it or she would put a Norwegian curse on the amah that would be much bigger and stronger than any curse ever heard of in Malaysia before and the amah bashfully slunk away.

@Drago ... How influential were northern financial interests that were invested in the slave trade in driving the compromise? was it not possible to form two federations with mutual defense treaty?

Prohibitng importation of slaves was good first step. Fugitive slave laws were more than two steps back. I also heard ... main reason for moving capital to Washington ... To enable southern legislators to staff up household with no fear of runaways as might have happened in Philadelphia.

I am pretty sure all owned slaves , would like to know exceptions.

No meddling as a Foreign policy? Policy being handcuffs and declarations of weakness. In the golden age our policy is peace and strategic ambiguity. Peace thru overwhelming economic power. Obstruct at your peril. We will shrink the Defense complex to 1% of GDP, vice 3%. Others will have to match along with cost of governance of a mostly free people and their free enterprise to compete. Which will end oligarchs and their fiefdoms. Chairs of armed services committees and worse around the globe. Peace as enforced by economic exile. Negotiated harvesting of South China Sea to the benefit of all as an example to all. Now that invasion is silly given all have WMD, a fertilizer plant makes war gasses, an insecticide plant in a baby formula trailer humanicide, and, a high school bio lab even worse horrors. See My friend the late great Joshua Lederberg. So, the policy is peace. It’s time for the next generation to take charge, freed from the shackles of the past to solve the horrendous problems we’ve left them. The T party can’t lose if T says, “Senator Rand, here are the keys and you’re late”. The millennials will swoon in 2020.

The Guardian does not seem to agree with a commenter here.

A combination of factors ranging from economic grievances and a lack of social and political freedoms to international pressure and sanctions has put the country under unprecedented pressure. Many Iranians would now agree with Mohammad that the country faces a pivotal moment.

“People are desperate to find a way out,” he says. “If it’s war, so it be, but quick; if it’s reaching an agreement, so it be, but quick; if it’s regime change, so it be, but quick.”

Drago said...

Narayanan Subramanian: "@Drago ... How influential were northern financial interests that were invested in the slave trade in driving the compromise? was it not possible to form two federations with mutual defense treaty?"

I'm not sure how possible it would have been to form two federations.

Your point about northern interests supplying the ships and financing for the slave trade is well founded. The Triangle Trade was just as much the responsibility of some of those northern interests as the southerners.

However there were a number of northern founders who were adamantly opposed both to slavery within the states and the financing of the trade.

Pretty much sums up what I said yesterday in an earlier thread where I said that I would have no problem changing to the national motto to "Don't Mess With Us!" Because "Don't Fuck With Us!" is just a tad too profane to put on our coins, although the sense of it is exactly the same.
