"Over my lifetime I've done a lot of deals with a lot of people and sometimes the people you most distrust turn out to be the most honorable ones and the people that you do trust turn out to be not the honorable ones."

Said Trump, in this new interview with George Stephanopoulos. Watch the whole thing:

Trump also used the word "suspending" which is contextual. Intermittent events, such as annual exercises, can be suspended during the event or in between them. It is a rough synonym for "cease" in one example but not the other. Trump uses the language well in his own way.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

Drago wil you please cease being manic? It’s annoying.

Drago said...

Personally, I think it would be wise for Inga to cease using "cease" improperly.

sakredkow said...

Now this is what I wanted to say next:

"I may be wrong, I mean I may stand before you in six months and say, 'Hey I was wrong,' [about Kim Jong-un], I don't know that I'll ever admit that, but I'll find some kind of an excuse."

When people tell you who they are believe them. When people tell you that they don't accept personal responsibility believe them.

It will be important for sakredkow's self-worth to find at least 1 talking point that he/she can stick with and feel like he/she/xe has "won" "Teh Interwebs".

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

The word cease has a future tense. Sheesh.

Flailing. In all cases, past present and future it means to stop something IN PROGRESS. Again something that is not underway cannot be ceased. Try again, but I warn you, I have a BA in English and years of editing experience. This is what I do. I don't accept on-the-fly wholesale changes to my native tongue. Words are important to me. You're just trying to justify a mistake now. Own up. Move on.

I especially love the sudden progressive concern for "readiness" after eight freaking years of Obama starving the Defense budget, forcing transgender training on sailors who aren't seaworthy and letting our aging fleet deteriorate.

Courtesy of the same party that is not building infrastructure in California. No reservoirs to catch winter snow. $65 billion on a train to nowhere. And that's only so far. Population doubles in 25 years and no new infrastructure.

This is the party of "You didn't build that."

So, of course, they build nothing.

The relief of the staff in the MEPS when the trannie thing was cancelled was palpable.

Lefty memes and narratives often collide since history begins anew every 15 minutes.

According to the lefties, Trump failed in the summit that the left said was impossible to have.

See what I mean?

Bay Area Guy said...

This dramatic summit could be used as a teachable moment for the Left --if they cared to learn history.

1950 - 1952: Korean War. Over a million Koreans dead. 35,000 courageous American boys 5 years post WWII fought to save South Korea from going Communist.

1952 - today: 2 countries north and south; peace enforced by US troops. One country - North Korea -- a violent, oppressive, backwards-ass, slave state, shithole. The other -- a burgeoning democracy with a few flaws.

Compare and contrast the 2 countries over the past 70 years. That's why we were fighting the Russians during the Cold War. They prevailed in China (1948), and wanted Asia and the rest of thew world to look like North Korea.

sakredkow said...

The argument, as I understand it, is that Trump gave away something valuable that can be restarted at any minute. Also, that Kim gave away nothing of value while getting his photo op.

Kim is returning remains of U.S. soldiers which is more than nothing.

The action is on China. The trade negotiations with China are what really matter.

Speaking of what leftists think, one of the amusing schadenfreudian aspects of this Trump-Kim Jong-un agreement is speculating how many far-leftists — and I don't mean Robert Cook here (nor Inga — ha!) — are taking the news.

Hard-leftist activists — in the apparently peace-supporting guise of organizations such ANSWER (“Act Now to Stop War and End Racism” — which is actually a creature of the far-left World Workers Party — that is, real communists) — have had influence far beyond their (limited) numbers because these groups for many years have controlled organizing and running (supposedly!) “anti-war” demonstrations all across America.

Such far leftists, far from being really anti-war, typically love, love, love Kim Jong-un and his prison nation of North Korea (or they have in the past!) — nor have they ever seen anything to criticize about Kim's communist nation or his attempted revival (hitherto anyway) of “great game” nuclear-war “brinksmanship.”

ANSWER actually sent a covey of their partridges — er… partisans — for a “consciousness raising” holiday in Potemkin villages in that fat, well-fed, peace-loving socialist wonderland of North Korea just three years ago!

Look at the glorious itinerary for their trip….

“The itinerary for this trip is dazzling in its scope. We will visit different cities, both large and small, centers of learning and historic cultural sites; travel to the Panmujon and the DMZ, which still separates the Korean Peninsula into north and south; participate in and witness Pyongyang's celebrated mass performances as the country officially marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea; visit the historic city of Kaesong, an UNESCO World Heritage Site that was the capital of the Koryo Dynasty and is today known both for its stunning mountains and landscape, and as a commercial and political point of contact between north and south Korea; and experience the gorgeous scenery of Mt. Myohyang, an important cultural and historic site due to it being the birthplace of King Tangun, who founded the first Korean kingdom of Gojoseon in 2333 B.C.”

How could a good starry-eyed leftist not want to “participate in” Pyongyang's “celebrated mass performances”?

But that was then.

The link at AnswerCoalition.org for that trip is still good! Any bets as to how long till they take it down?

Vaclev Havel described the sakredkow/Inga/readerings of the world long ago in his work "The Power of the Powerless", wherein the leftist leaders create conditions where one is required to live the lie and not the truth, regardless of how obvious the truth is.

In fact, the more obviously something is true simply makes it that much more important to the leftist state to corrupt you to believe the lie.

"An individual living within such a system must live a lie, to hide that which he truly believes and desires, and to do that which he must do to be left in peace and to survive.

"...they must live within a lie. They need not accept the lie. It is enough for them to have accepted their life with it and in it. For by this very fact, individuals confirm the system, fulfill the system, make the system, are the system."

The far far lefties, as you rightly point out, have been arguing against an aggressive stance against Russia and NK for decades.

Here's how they are handling this:

"You Can Be a Critic of Trump and Still Root for Diplomacy to Succeed in Korea"
"Congressman Ro Khanna says Democrats should be encouraging statecraft that promotes cooperation and peace."

In my opinion, there is actually little danger to the North Korean government and its leader if Kim does completely denuclearize- even up to the point to hand delivering the nukes he has in hand. There are both carrots and sticks that we can offer the North Koreans to make this possible, and probably more carrots than sticks.

That sort of staged mass hysteria isn’t attractive to ANY western person, leftist or not. Nor is Communism, whether it be a Capitalist (China) Communist nation or not. What gets me is that so many conservatives have an unrealistic, outlandish idea of what an average American leftie is. I hear so many exaggerations, lies, fantasies about what liberals, Democrats and progressives are all about. There are commenters here who have a hard time believing Americans on the left are married, have children, work, are patriotic, are not all raving feminists, serve in the military. The volume of made up and silly lefty complaints (with the caveat that many on the far left are speaking and behaving consistently re: NK and Russia relations with the Trump admin) is in direct correlation to the lefties fear that this and other actions by Trump on the foreign policy front will be as successful as Trump's economic policies thus far.

That's what this nonsense is all about.

Of the liberals I know and I know many, many liberals, not one resembles the description of “leftists” I hear on these threads on a daily basis. There is so much misunderstanding, some purposefully, some accidentally. The liberals I know are married, moms, dad’s, grandma’s, grandpa’s, hard workers, decent, wonderful people. You folks don’t like being called deplorable, but we on the left have been likened to Stalin, Kim, any Communist in history for years and years. The demonization of those on the left started long before the left pushed back. I, for a long time hesitated to speak of my family (I did many years ago and was doxxed here, so was my daughter whose real name was used), then recently I thought, why not? Maybe the folks here should realize that we on the left are not so very different than themselves. I’ve had idiots like Birkel and others claiming I lied about my own family, that I don’t really have children, that my daughter doesn’t serve in the Navy, that I was never married, that I never worked, that I was scamming disability, etc. etc. etc.
It’s as if a real live lefty just cannot be a regular American! They must be lying!

Stop with the otherizing of the left, we are your countrymen and women, we serve in the military, we are patriots, we are workers, we are decent human beings. Havels work is entirely relevant to the state of US culture within the coastal bubbles at least, and various industries/subcultures across the country.

"The Power of the Powerless" is instructive. Havel describes the constraints and structures of control, both official and unofficial, within a totalitarian system in a "soft" stage. That system, in his time, was loosening.

In the US this is a not dissimilar situation, or one approaching it, where the system is tightening.

In Havel's case there is little left of free speech in public, and all counter-hegemonic speech was samizdat. In the US it is approaching this situation, and indeed most counter-hegemonic speech is also samizdat. One has to wonder what the situation would be had HRC won.

What our dictatorship never really managed was employment sanctions, other than a few cases. In that it was a more "liberal" regime, albeit a dictatorship, than what prevails, unofficially, in many areas of US culture.

Royal ass Inga,

I use Democrat, leftist, Leftist, and Leftist Collectivists to mean four different groups - allowing for some overlap.

Your inability to see the distinction is not my fault. Do better.

I disagree. They are all the same. Some are violent. That is the only difference.

Birkel said...

Sure, losing your temper when discussing things at a distance with people unknown is the proper response. Keeping ones cool in such a situation proves a defect.

Perhaps I should be sent to a gulag pending further examination, Nurse Ratched?

Nope. Goofy Ritmo is incapable of restraint and brevity.

I don't know. He was starting to resemble the human scroll bar with lots of comments and got angrier and more insulting.

Is that how you see your own liberal children?

Jon Ericson said...

Like I said, forever.

Birkel said...

We disagree, Dr. K. Democrats and Leftists are the foot soldiers of the Leftist Collectivists. That doesn't make them intolerable or foolish. It makes them tragic when they cannot see how terribly Leftist Collectivists ideas are when applied to actual people.

Some, but not terribly many, Democrats are imminently reachable. Trump reached some and is reaching more every passing day. Reagan reached quite a few in 1980 and even more in 1984.

The lust for power within the Leftist Collectivists - the ones who wish to rule their peers - cannot be reached. They must be kept away from power. That is why the tripartite system we have with its innumerable checks and balances is so vitally important. It is only the systems that are important and that is what made Obama's Administration so horrible for the nation. (e.g. IRS, FBI, DOJ, CIA, State, ETC.)

Yes, I grant that. But most, even my kids who are leftists, are not reconciled to the election result. The big difference is that some are opening their eyes and seeing reality, unlike the leftists here.

Once they see reality, they are no longer the dedicated leftists who still rule the Democrat Party.

We see the fools right here who are oblivious to reality. I don't really object to their foolishness as long as they are not violent or threaten violence. Some are annoying by posting interminable foolish comments denying reality but we can scroll past them.

The problem is that we need some sort of reality check to solve the impending catastrophic problems headed our way.

The left is pulling the wrong way. If it was only disagreement, but they are fighting the solution.

Birkel said...

Granted, Dr. K, there are far too many beyond reality. BUT!

If we do things to force them into reality, we can be quite transgressive. For example, I use XX and XY when discussing transgender things. So when an article says "pregnant male model" I would say to a leftist friend "You mean the person with XX chromosomes who is pregnant and works as a model?"

The Leftist Collectivist attempt to control language can be fought. And decent Democrats will see the value in truth. (See, e.g. Jordan Peterson)

Inga, sacredkow, koskids, etc, are interesting in how much cognitive dissonance they can endure to deny the facts (and they do represent a significant portion of the population), but the anti-Trump media are the real conundrum. As far as I can tell they have dug a hole so deep they are unable to climb out.

Current meme the MSM is pushing:

1 The Trump gave away the farm (putting military exercises on hold, photo ops, etc) are hardly worth addressing.

2 The NORKS have a different idea of what denuclearzation means. I'd bet the family jewels that Pompeo informed them EXACTLY what it means.

3 Kim’s human rights abuses. As if Trump is supposed to forgo the deal because of this. That'll put on the table. Mmmm, American principles are both nutritious and delicious. The best chance the common North Korean has is for this deal to succeed.

4 We have elevated the 'status' of a terrible dictator. Whatever the hell that means. Option 2 would be what - nuclear war? Posthumous status only in that.

5 China gets all the credit for this. I've even seen Russia mentioned as responsible. Sheesh! MSM will run up whatever trial balloons they can find to use against Trump.

The resistance is flailing and the hole just keeps getting deeper. Despite buwaya's explanations I still don't get why they are doing this.

Drago said...

Michael K: "The problem is that we need some sort of reality check to solve the impending catastrophic problems headed our way."

There is no reality check.

Human nature is far too stubborn.

No, only really terrible outcomes that allow for "bounce-back" reactions (think Hillary Care/Obamacare, gun grabbing, etc) are "recoverable" to some extent.

However, we already see with immigration that even many republican leaders are all in on open borders and that one could literally end the republic in a generation.

Nope. Humans don't react generally until rock bottom is hit.

Note: I cannot qualify the impact of Black Swan events like Trump

Inga...Allie Oop said...

President Donald Trump has found an unlikely source of support as he meets with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un: Democrats! Progressive collectivists no less.

“We are encouraged by your efforts to pursue direct diplomacy with North Korea with the dual goals of resolving the nearly seven-decade-long conflict and achieving the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," 15 House members wrote in a letter to Trump on Monday. "Diplomacy is the only path to resolve the tensions between our countries."

These members are willing to put what's best for the country, and in this case the world, ahead of the day-to-day politics of it," said Eddie Vale, a veteran of Democratic and progressive political and legislative campaigns. "But just because someone is giving Trump a chance on diplomacy doesn't mean they won't criticize him if he fails on one of the myriad other issues like immigration, health care, or taxes that he's hurting their constituents on and that's what the elections will be decided on."

The letter was signed by the two co-chairs of the House's Progressive Caucus — Reps. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Mark Pocan, D-Wisc., — and include members from California, Washington, Hawaii and Guam.”

Perhaps you missed it, but upthread I said I give Trump credit for pulling off the summit.

Inga, that very fact (far left supporting Trump efforts) was mentioned multiple times far upthread and called out as an understandable exception to the rule of the standard left/lib reaction.

3 Kim’s human rights abuses. As if Trump is supposed to forgo the deal because of this.

We already have a leftist complaint on another thread about this. I assume he wants nuclear war to fix the gulags.

I posted a very good Pat Buchanan column on the trade issue today.

Trump sees America as a nation being milked by allies who free ride on our defense effort, as they engage in trade practices that prosper their own peoples at America’s expense.

Where our elites live to play masters of the universe, Trump sees a world laughing behind America’s back, while allies exploit our magnanimity and idealism for their own national ends.

The numbers are impossible to refute and hard to explain.

Last year, the EU had a $151 billion trade surplus with the U.S. China ran a $376 billion trade surplus with the U.S., the largest in history. The world sold us $796 billion more in goods than we sold to the world.

A nation that spends more than it takes in from taxes, and consumes more of the world’s goods than it produces itself for export, year in and year out, is a nation on the way down.

Solving Korea is a step toward sanity in foreign policy. Getting out of Afghanistan is another. That may be next year.

I love that Congressional letter.

The next time those two Democrats don't support Trump on an obvious pro-U.S. policy it will make for a nice reminder that it is normally all about politics. Or when other Democrats rail against this chain of events, it will call into question their motivations.

Some leftist fool posted a comment about how many jobs Trump has saved.

I doubt that person would be interested in this news.

So with CO2 not being at the factor, it was made out to be, and because the Paris Accord is based on the spectacle of a rapidly warming planet, Vahrenholt writes that the “foundation of the Paris Accord has collapsed.”

Only Europe and Canada exiting coal

Another reason the Paris Accord is collapsing is that it’s not going to do anything we were promised it would.

When it comes to coal, Vahrenholt notes, so far only Europe and Canada have expressed some sort of a commitment to exit coal, and then he reminds us China, India and all developing countries will still be permitted to continue “massively” expanding their use of coal. He writes:

In other words, Angela Merkel and her green punch drinkers think the climate is going to be saved if Germany shuts down 1/20 of what China and India are going to add. No wonder Trump dumped the idiotic Accord.

Coal to expand 43% worldwide

Of course that is impossible in the leftist book.

I remember when Khrushchev visited a supermarket and probably thought it was a Potemkin display. Then I read Shevchenko's "Breaking With Moscow" and realized how shaken he must have been by it.

I wonder what Kim thinks as he has been in the West for school.

Kim Jong Un is an interesting character study. He's a third-generation hereditary ruthless dictator, and as might be expected having grown up in such a milieu, he had to be ruthless to survive and maintain his rule. Someone less ruthless, as his elder half-brother apparently was, would have ended up murdered in exile with nerve agent in an airport somewhere. KJU runs the prison camps, but he inherited them, he didn't create them. This is not to excuse the viciousness of his regime, but just to be thankful that I wasn't the one born into such a family and indoctrinated into such a culture. There but for the grace of God go I.

buwaya said...

Kim seems to have gone to a Swiss German-language public school - that is, comparable to a US public school, not a British type exclusive private "public" school, for three years or so, for the equivalent of high school. He can be seen in group photographs of typical Swiss kids. So he probably has a good idea of a typical private life in the West.
