A Trump conundrum: Is Crowley "slovenly" because he got his "ass kicked" or did he get his "ass kicked" because he is "slovenly"?

The quote (via CNN) from Trump's rally last night in North Dakota is: "A slovenly man named Joe Crowley got his ass kicked by a young woman who had a lot of energy. She had a lot of energy. I guess he didn't see it. They couldn't find him."

I don't think I've ever heard the word "slovenly" used as a political insult. I tend to think of the meaning as relating to physical appearance —"Untidy, dirty; habitually careless, indolent, or negligent with regard to appearance, personal hygiene, household cleanliness, etc." (OED) — which makes it seem like a gratuitous personal insult. But it also relates to activities: "Careless, negligent, or sloppy with regard to any activity" (OED).

And in that sense, it's exactly the right word, and the answer to the conundrum is that Trump meant to say Crowley lost because he was slovenly. He didn't see that his opponent had the potential to win, and he didn't take the trouble to fight her off, and now the Democrats are left with a candidate whose strength has not been tested.

So the meaning of the word was perfect, and the sound of the word was also great — poetry, even — Crowley/slovenly. Maybe there's a word for the type of rhyme where the second syllable is identical and the first syllable is a near-rhyme. In my mind, the "ly" falls away, and I see "crow" more clearly. Crowley eats crow. "Crow" and "sloven" — the sloven crow. Sloven Crow sounds so great, I'd like there to be a restaurant with that name. Or a rock band.

"Sloven" is a great and underused word. It takes me back to a poem I memorized in childhood: And the sloven, I declare/Never once has comb’d his hair...

Why in the world did the guy send a surrogate to debate her?

She is a nut but he was a really bad candidate and deserved to lose.

The seat is almost certainly safe but this is a bad message for other districts.

OK with me, by the way.

If you think that a Republican can win that district (is one even running?), then I have a bridge connecting the two boroughs she will represent to sell you.

I lived in Kansas and was amazed (and disgusted) the first time I voted there and saw that the Democrats hadn't even bothered to run someone against Pat Roberts, it was just him and a Libertarian on the ballot.

I was in NYC last week and there was a political ad for one of the districts. The Republican ran an ad that said he was pro-choice and pro gun control. Here in Louisiana you couldn't even get a Democrat to say that in public.

This being New York, Crowley can run as an Independent in November and swamp the Bernie sis. However, it is going to cost Tammany a bunch of money and be hugely embarrassing besides angering the loony left nationwide.

When will conservatives learn that socialism sells. People love the idea of government taking care of them. And when government does a good job they are very happy. People don't like when government does a poor job.

Look at the scandi countries. They are taxed about mid 40%. But they consistently rank as very satisfied with their government and life.

Right; "slovenly."

"Slovenly" is the way that I think of much of Trump's messaging. It's undisciplined; and from the Althouse-supplied definition of "slovenly," it's "untidy; habitually careless; indolent; and negligent..."

I was thinking of that early this morning as I listened to public radio liberals whine about how Roe v. Wade was doomed with the departure of Kennedy. I don't agree with that, but even if the old case were somehow reversed, I don't agree with what most liberals think about the future of abortion availability.

(I also thought about the odd possibility that Trump himself would be linked to Shera Beshard's abortion in the NDA payoff scandal.)

Anyway, they were quoting Trump's bloviating campaign promise that he would only nominate Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade. What a stupid statement, by Trump. Trump can't extract such a promise; if he did, the nominated judge would effectively disqualify himself. It was a slovenly statement by Trump. One of a thousand or so slovenly Trump statements.

I don't much doubt that Trump will nominate a great replacement for Kennedy. And that if Trump doesn't screw it up, the nominee will be confirmed, probably 51-49. But Trump's legal and intellectual slovenliness just makes it harder. Just like stating a desire to order a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States. Slovenly thinking. Particularly if you have a workable goal to legally put a halt to much legal and all illegal immigration. You just don't say stuff like that. It's slovenly.

rehajm said...

Thought he had it locked because he had been there forever. Decided he was too "good" to have to debate or even show up for what he considered a novelty candidate.

Too mired in admiring himself and didn't even give it a good try. Taking the voters for granted as if he "owned" them.

I didn't pay attention to his campaign because ...meh.....but probably didn't offer any real policy positions or give any real reason to be elected other than...it's me and I deserve it.

However the problem is in your perceptions. YOU perceive Trump as being undisciplined. The reality is that Trump is operating openly in a new way that is flummoxing and confusing to the persons (you) who yearn for a way that they understand. Chuck says The old ways please and get off my lawn. Sometimes being UN-disciplined is not a bad thing.

The disciplined chaos that seems to be Trump's modus operandi is not new in this world. It is just new in the kabuki theater that we have known as politics.

The disciplined chaos that you perceive is actually working because it has the element of surprise to those whose hidebound ways of thinking aren't able to keep up.

I don't often agree with Chuck, but he has nailed it.

Trump is undisciplined to the extent he often unnecessarily encourages antagonism, or provides his opponents with defendable terrain.

For example, after the Janus decision, Trump tweeted something like "those unions are going to take it in the shorts".

Possibly, probably, true.

Problem is that he has provided the left (as predictably exemplified by the NYT today) terrain to defend: saintly unions.

However, had he said [Trumpian words I can't hope to imitate to the effect of Supreme Court slams those who think it is OK to make you pay for speech you hate. MAGA!] then the left would, instead of defending unions, would instead be having to explain why its OK to compel speech.

Millennials also seem to prefer very clear instructions from which they do not deviate. They do not seem to have the capacity for independent thought or ad libbing. Maybe that is because the educational system has been teaching WHAT to think rather than HOW to think over the past 30 years.

To get them to agree to a hard line on Iran.

The biggest problem with backing out of Obama's Iran deal is that the sanctions which brought Iran to the table in the first place were gone -- Europe was trading with Iran again. Taking a hard line on trade with Europe got the EU to (implicitly) agree that trade with the U.S. was much more important to them than trade with Iran.

If we also get lower tariffs on our goods -- like Germany offered last week -- that's a great bonus too.

Because Europe has, with our stupid help, constructed trade restrictions and barriers that put the US at a permanent disadvantage, undermine international sanctions which undermines our foreign policy, abuses the NAFTA agreements to sneak products from Europe into the US market via Canada or Mexico, doesn't meet even the bare minimum defense contributions for NATO, etc.

Because they have been getting huge US aid in the form of trade deficits while playing games of tariffs, subsidies, and trade obstacles and delays---while not paying their fair share for defense and security. They are the grandkids that cash Grandma's birthday check and don't even say "Thanks!." The US is not going to get hurt in a trade war more than the deficits that we've been incurring over the last several decades. If Europe loses the US market, they might as well commit suicide. The US is still the market maker for the world.

Several people have referred to Ocasio as "latino" or "hispanic" in comments here and on yesterday's thread.

This drives me up a wall since there is really no such thing. She is Puerto Rican. There are also lots of Mexicans and Cubans in the US. Each group tends to congregate in different areas. None of the three have much of anything in common. Not how they came to the US, not culture, not countries of origin. Mexicans, for example, tend to be primarily indian blood not much African. Puerto Ricans have little indian blood, lots of African. Neither have much Spanish (as in tracing back to Spain). Argentines have primarily German and Italian bloodlines. Those that aren't Indian and African, anyway.

I don't think there is dislike between the groups. But neither is there much affinity. About the only commonality is language and not even that after a 2 generations or so.

So can we call Ocasio Puerto Rican instead of Latino? I suspect that she knows little and cares less about Mexican-American and Cuban-American issues and that her focus is on Puerto Rican issues.

Someone suggested that Crowley will run as an independent. I agree and offered to bet $5 on this yesterday. I went further and said that if he did, he would have the support of the party.

It is something that annoys the bejabbers out of me that this can even happen. It seems to me that when someone loses a primary (or in CH's case the general) they should have the good grace to shut up and support the winner. Some states (including NY? Anyone know?) have laws against this. All should.

Two recent examples were Murkowski and Lieberman. Both lost their primaries, both ran as independents, both were supported by the party over the actual nominee, both won and both were welcomed as their party's representatives.

This is despicable. In my opinion, both should have been shunned by the party in the general and even after.

One more reason why, if I lived in the upper 48 I probably would not even register to vote. The right to vote seems meaningless. Nothing more than getting people to put their stamp of approval on a corrupt circus.

Not to say our politicians here will not match any Chicago, NY or Detroit pol on the corruptometer. They will, though they mainly manage to stay out of the pokey. We do get them honestly, though. No shenanigans in our elections.

Problem is that he has provided the left (as predictably exemplified by the NYT today) terrain to defend: saintly unions.

Actually, no. Not many people see unions as "saintly" and Janus doesn't even affect unions generally. It affects only govt employee unions. There are damn few people who see see govt employee unions as anything other than corrupt. If not legally, then morally.

So rather than providing the fascists with terrain to defend, he has provided them with a hill to die on and no reinforcements coming.

They will have to defend the hill to prevent mutiny of their members. But the more they try to defend it, the more most Americans will say "Fuck you, we have civil service, there is no need for govt unions at all."

They may die a glorious death defending the hill, but in the end they will die on it and few will care.

Appearance of chaos and disorganization? Perhaps. A method to his madness? Absolutamente!

I fully endorse the remarks of Senorita Chiquita Banana. A white man should not represent brown people. Brown people should have their own representatives. Their own restaurants. Their own neighbor hoods. The few remaining whites who used to live on Archie Bunkers block there in Queens need to move out and leave it to the beaners. They want to turn it into a shit hole like their native land. Leave them to it. NYC is lost to the normals.

It is a lost cause.

Fighting two front wars is almost never a good idea. Presuming China, and its rampant disregard of WTO norms, is our biggest trade threat, why piss off Europe?

And yet he now has the European automakers, primarily Germany, asking for zero tariffs on autos.

President Trump, at the G-7, asked for all tariff's to be abolished. This would be a start.

Neither. He's slovenly and he got his ass kicked, two unrelated things.

Almost as if the man is a stable genius.

It did strike me as the perfect word, not just because of the exactness of meaning, but because it is a bit unexpected so it would have a deeper impact on people who understood the word. The more common modern American usage relates purely to appearance.

Thanks John Henry. I know you live in Puerto Rico so you need to protect one of your own.

I just endorse her as a fellow bigoted piece of shit. She is bigoted against white people in favor of brown people. She thinks white people, white privilege and white supremacy are terrible things.

When in fact without white people and white supremacy she would still be on the island picking coconuts out of the tree and have six kids by the age of 15.

I just stick up for my own people. Something Joe Crowley forgot and now it is biting him in the ass. Just the way it is biting the Democrats in the ass when this Chiquita and Aunt Esther Waters and Keith Ellison are the heart and soul of their party.

Meh. Her teeth are too big.

White people have fled Queens and the Bronx. It is now filled with illegals especially in places like Corona. This baby banana is the perfect representative to bring shit hole county values to the Congress. They need representation too.

Look on the bright side for the Democrats. When she is elected she can provide maid service at caucus meetings while Nancy Pelosi and other rich white ladies determine policy.

I bet the wise latina cleaning up the used condoms and pancake derbies in Althouse's hotel room is just as qualified.

Viva la chuci chuci!

It's a majority Hispanic district. The attractive female Hispanic beat the pasty, fat white guy by 4000 votes in a 25,000 vote election.

It was a failure by the party to get out their usual voters. Why?

I was in NYC last week and there was a political ad for one of the districts. The Republican ran an ad that said he was pro-choice and pro gun control. Here in Louisiana you couldn't even get a Democrat to say that in public.

I think that was Bob Hugin (and where's his cousin Munin?) who is running against Menendez for NJ Senator.

You don't want Republican ads against her.
No matter what silliness she gets up to or how much of a ditz she is.
Bad optics.

She is simply too young and too pretty (as politicians go). And female.
Any ad against her will be an ad for her.
And it isn't a seat Republicans can hope for anyway."

I want GOP ads with her.

The more sillier and ditzy she is the better, to a point we most likely won't approach.

Great optics for the greatest country in history.

Thank God she is so young, pretty, and not a "he."

All ads for her will be a reminder of why she exists outside of watering holes.

Only idiots can't understand why we are talking about a NY election; as if 'twere contained within that mere district (lol).

Read me Bu Bu, go back. Whether through logistics or gumption, the greatest country of All Time will not be defeated, not on our watch.

All this civil war bs is online only.

It always will be.

America is forever God willing, which He most certainly so far.

50-100 dead per day based on hate/politics is not a civil war,
Not to Americans. And I haven't even Seen that meager (but grim) stat actualized.

Civil War is more like, with our current pop., 10 or 20,000 dead per day. Let me know if you start to notice that, please, O well-read one.

It's so hard to have principles and ethics, and then people don't like you cause you don't have the same opinions as the progs... Shhhh, keep your stupid heads down, cucks. Don't say anything, the progs won't like it... Pathetic.

That didn't work with Trump...

If you study martial arts, and move has a counter.

> When she is elected she can provide maid service at caucus meetings while Nancy Pelosi and other rich white ladies determine policy.

If she just goes to Congress, then the same thing will happen as for the tea party representatives:

NOTHING.

She's only effective as a "master persuader".

Can she sell socialism?

Does she believe that stuff, or is she just using it to get attention? (the second is politically smarter)

She has the spotlight, does she have the talent stack to make something of the moment?

She is a bartender. Maybe some other skills.

Trump was a salesman and world's greatest brander, billionaire NY real estate, event promoter, and TV personality raised at the side of Roy Cohen. Trumps not a "True Believer", he did not win on ideology. (Obama is a true believer, a doctrinaire liberal conlaw prof).

Sure they both have "no political experience".

Can she sell?
