... it's a nice place for Valentines.

Too late to buy any Valentine a Valentine's Day gift, but it's nice to get things for no special occasion and to show a little love for the Althouse blog by using the Althouse Portal to Amazon.

I would be hard pressed, if only allowed one choice, not to take lemon pie/tarts/squares with me to a desert island - been that way for years - but I admit cherry -related like items are gaining ground in the last 5-6 years. Dont know why - must have had a real good pie somewhere along the way.

It is unfortunate that my wife would have to go off to the other desert island, the one where the dessert is chocolate cake. Cake over pie?!?!?Sad.

Besides being totally inappropriate for a past president to go politicking against a sitting one when abroad, it was also wrong.
Braceros have come across the border quite legally and in a reasonably orderly fashion like forever to follow the various harvest seasons around the U.S., and in 65 years I have never noticed any publicity about this causing any problems of note.
This invasion, or mass migration, we have been experiencing now is something quite different.

"Under the proposal, which was announced Monday, low-income Americans who receive at least $90 a month – just over 80 percent of all SNAP recipients – would get about half of their benefits in the form of a "USDA Foods package." The package was described in the budget as consisting of "shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans[,] and canned fruit and vegetables."

SonofNewo has posted a new video about the Charlottesville incident, titled "Charlottesville Car Attack: Ten Curious Facts".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0kdA7Ce9to

For me, the new information was that the black van parked in the vicinity of the pie shop on Fourth Street seems to be a US Government vehicle.

* The black van has a Washington DC license plate and has a government fleet decal.

* Before James Fields drove into the crowd, he backed his car to the vicinity of that black van.

* The black van was parked in the vicinity of a pie shop that had a security camera pointed toward the street.

* The FBI confiscated the video from the pie shop's security camera.

* The FBI has not informed the local police investigators and prosecutors about the existence of this video.

I've been watching Babylon Berlin. It's a kind of noir detective story set in the Weimar Republic. I was going to congratulate them for not once playing Mack the Knife as background music, but tonight's episode they couldn't resist the temptation. Still, they got thirteen episodes in before they succumbed, and that's a remarkable achievement.

Two videos were shown in open court at the indictment of James Fields. One video was filmed from a helicopter, and the other was filmed from an outside wall on Fourth Street. Journalists from CNN, AP, The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Richmond Times Dispatch watched the two videos in court and reported about them.

However, now the prosecutor refuses to allow anyone else to watch the two videos. The prosecutor used "prosecutorial discretion" to reject SonofNewo's FOI request.

Two private businesses that filmed the incident have refused SonofNewo's requests to watch their videos. He offered to pay money in order to simply watch them, but he was turned down.

Several videos showing events on Fourth Street during the incident are being kept from the public.

The FBI seized the video from the security camera of a pie shop on Fourth Street and still has not informed local police investigators and prosecutors about that video's existence.

Two videos that were shown in open court are now being withheld from by public. The prosecutor is using "prosecutorial discretion" to reject FOIA requests for the two videos that were shown in open court at the indictment of James Fields.

Two private companies that filmed the scene are refusing to allow the public to simply watch their videos, even for payment.

@Ann Althouse:

Happy lover's day to you and Meade. That you found each other under such unusual circumstances is all the more reason to be unabashedly proud in your consideration for each other. I have long been a fan of Andrew Sullivan (for better or worse) and I vividly recall your spat with him over his callous cruelty to your nuptials. I was immediately on your side and found it outrageous that someone so supposedly committed to the idea of non-traditional marriages could casually slime just such an arrangement.

I first discovered Ann more than 10 years ago, in March of 2007 to be exact, during her infamous (over)reaction to Garance Franke-Ruta casually referencing the "Jessica Valenti breast controversy." Ann flipped her shit in a fabulous way. Been following her ever since, and she frequently reminds me of my own mother (not least because she has a gay son). My mother is a frighteningly smart woman whose intelligence is outmatched only by her Judo like inability to ever be pinned down in an argument (regardless of how empirically wrong she was). Despite this, I have never been able to shake the bizarre subconscious suspicion that Ann really hates my guts. She has referenced comments I have made a couple of times in posts but has never named me directly.

Admitting this of course reveals a certain pathetic insecurity and desire for validation. But then again, perhaps there is a more maternal connection than even I care to admit.

James Fields drove south on Fourth Street into the anti-racism who had been diverted from Water Street north onto Fourth Street. Fields hit the crowd at about the intersection of Fourth and Water.

From north to south, the series of streets are:

[north part of Fourth Street]

Jefferson Street

Market Street

Main Street

Water Street

[south part of Fourth Street]

Fourth Street is open to vehicles driving one way south.

Third Street and Fifth Street are pedestrian-only streets, which permanent obstacles blocking vehicles.

* The Unite the Right protesters marched north on the pedestrian-only Fifth Street.

* The anti-racism protesters were following at a long distance. Instead of following the same route north onto pedestrian-only Fifth Street, they were diverted north onto Fourth Street, which was open to vehicles driving one-way south.

A police car was positioned at the intersection of Fourth and Market in order to prevent vehicles from driving south on Fourth Street. In addition, sawhorses were placed at that intersection to prevent vehicles from driving south on Fourth Street.

However, the police officer positioned at that intersection drove away. Later she explained her departure by saying that she did not feel safe in her police car while it was parked at that intersection.

The sawhorses were removed from the intersection by unknown persons.

Because the police officer drove away and because the sawhorses were removed, vehicles were able to drive from Market Street south to Water Street. This is what James Fields. He drove west on Market Street and turned south onto Fourth Street.

Charlottesville Cops Pulled Squad Car From Intersection Used By James Fields After Officer Said She Felt ‘Unsafe’

Fields turned from Market onto Fourth about 1:15 minutes before he drove into the crowd of anti-racism protesters. He drove slowly south past Main Street -- into the block between Main and Water. Then at some point he backed up north to the block between Main and Market.

Then, when he was between Main and Market, he was in the vicinity of a parked black van that belongs to the US government. The black van was parked in the vicinity of a pie shop that has a security camera pointed to Fourth Street.

From the area between Main and Market, Fields then raced south and hit the crowd at the intersection of Fourth and Water.

The FBI has seized the video made by the pie shop's video camera and has not informed the local police investigators and prosecutors about the video's existence.

There seems to be a coordinated effort to prevent the public from seeing several videos that show events on Fourth Street right before Fields drove into the crowd.

While I have no problem with this...Hell I'd give them MREs to eat like someone else said, I'm actually starting to come around to an idea they are sort of testing in Stockton. And that's a guaranteed minimum income.

No more food stamps, no WIC, no anything. Instead, everyone gets a monthly check from the government. I wouldn't even means check it, but that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. That gets rid of most of the bureaucracy and government waste. We'd probably save money in the end.

I know the feeling of imagining without good enough reason that other people hate you. It does probably have more to do with your own childhood & other experiences.

For the record, I don't hate anyone. I don't know if what I write ever seems to express hate, but I don't feel any hate toward any person.

Why are the words "screaming" and "fit" in the headline (at The Daily Mail) but then not in the text. I saw Priebus's statement yesterday and thought it added nothing to what we already knew. And it's not that Trump was mad at the size of the crowd but mad at what he thought was a fake news report about it. He fights the news that is skewed against it instead of turning the other cheek like GWB. Old news. Why is Priebus activating himself now? What's his game?

I actually watched the Olympics last night -- the long skate for pairs. I thought the best skaters on the ice last night won the gold. Great reactions when, after skating and having to watch 3 other pairs try to match their scores, they emerged victorious. I'm surprised they didn't vomit from the nerves though.

The last pair of skaters should fire whoever chose their music for them. Horrible.

Today's mom must remain hyperaware of all dangers her child might face. She knows whatever befalls her little one, she should have known about it, been there, and prevented it from happening.

How dare she allow her child to go to a school where any danger might befall them? That is what is blasting through our TVs and radios this morning - how these otherwise good mothers failed their children.

This is what society currently demands. And it does so because it makes that segment of society more accepting of government efforts to make everything as safe as possible. No one is more amenable to give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety than today's mom.

Tomorrow they'll be responsible for any possible genetic abnormalities which should have been identified and corrected in the womb. And they will demand government pay for it, so good moms of meager means don't look down upon their privilege when they do it.

However, many orangutans also disappeared from more intact, forested areas, the researchers say, suggesting that hunting and other direct conflicts between orangutans and humans remain a major threat to the species." (nytimes)
