That's Tsuyu-Kusa — Dayflower Blue — ink I bought for my beautiful Pelikan pen. Those are Amazon Associates links, which empower you to support this blog while buying things that you want for yourself. If you don't like that ink (or the many other colors at that link) and don't want that pen, please consider using the Althouse Portal to Amazon whenever you're buying something that you do want.

Sometimes I like to take a notebook (with excellent paper) and go somewhere without a computer and write in a different way. It has an effect. It's contemplative. And I like to be able to make handwritten notes in some situation.

But I have plenty of time. Almost all I do is read and write, so having a different way to write is valuable to me.

That's a gorgeous blue. I may give it a try. Is there any way of doing it thru amazon.ca so that you get your cut of the vig?

My favourite used to be Sheaffer's Peacock Blue but they discontinued it. (My Universal Rule of Consumption: If I like it, it WILL be discontinued. So always buy two, if possible.)

There are entire threads on fountainpennetwork devoted to reproducing Peacock Blue by mixing other inks.

The best colored rubies are "pigeon-blood red," and the best colored sapphires are "corn-flower blue." Rubies and sapphires have a "hardness" second only to diamonds, which is the hardest substance. Hardness relates to the scratchability, a word I just made up. My understanding is that you can't scratch a diamond except with another diamond. Sapphire and rubies are both aluminium(III) oxide, Al2O3, with other substances, like chromium, added to the crystal to change the color from clear to yellow, orange, blue, pink etc. So, sapphires come in a variety of colors, with the red ones containing chromium referred to as rubies.

I always write with a Sheaffer and have since high school. I remember one unfortunate time in college where we had to take an exam on a school standard term book. I bought one at the student union on the way to the test, and the paper turned out to be about as good as a paper towel for fountain pen work. I turned in a blotty almost illegible mess.

As noted before, Shelby Foote used a dip pen to write his Civil War books. I have been using Private Reserve ink for a few years in a color called Tanzinite. If you use a fountain pen you have to be fussy about the ink. The Pilot ink may or may not be a friend to your Pelican. I have a small (200?) Pelican but generally use a Pilot or Namiki Falcon with a broad nib. Falcon has the most flexible of nibs. If you want something special like an oblique or Spencerian you have to go to Nibs.com and check out the tweaks they will perform.

... Trump who was the face of the Birther movement questioning whether Obama was even constitutionally legitimate ...

On this blog, the birther issue has been discussed plenty. I never get tired of it, and I'm always eager to discuss it some more.

Donald Trump deserves much credit for compelling Barack Obama to help establish the precedent that every presidential candidate should help provide the government's best evidence about the candidate's birth circumstances.

The US Constitution includes a presidential requirement related to birth circumstances.

Therefore, the electorate should be provided the government's best evidence. In the case of Obama, the electorate was given only a summary, written by an anonymous clerk, of Obama's original, long-form birth certificate.

Obama could have facilitated the provision of the original document in 2008, but he preferred that the controversy develop as a lot of racism accusations until 2012, when he finally was compelled by Trump to provide to the electorate the original document.

That's a good precedent for all future presidential elections.

Trump raised the same issue of birth circumstances when he ran against Ted Cruz in the 2016 primary elections.

Are the media and others (including many Republicans like the two President Bushes and the two most recent Republican presidential nominees) more critical and skeptical of Trump? Of course and you know why. He is a scoundrel who has made his political career on taking cheap ugly shots at individuals and vulnerable groups.

There are a lot of people in the USA who spend much of their mental energy thinking up ways to accuse other people of being racists.

The birther controversy was an occasion for lots of racism accusations.

A person was a racist for saying that the electorate should be provided the best evidence about Barack Obama's birth circumstances while Obama was campaigning for a position that can be filled only by a "natural-born citizen".

A person was a racist for saying that the electorate should not be satisfied with a mere summary, written by an anonymous clerk, of the original document, which was available in the archive of a state government.

Obama's birth circumstances were poorly documented. His supposed father was a foreigner. His parents' marriage certificate was missing. His mother's whereabouts right in the weeks following the birth were dubious.

A person was a racist for wanting the government's best evidence -- not merely anonymously written summaries -- to be provided to the electorate.

Obama was a person who preferred that this controversy always be discussed in terms of racism accusations.

The US Constitution requires that a US President be a "natural-born citizen".

In contrast, the US Constitution does not state any requirement related to a US President's history of paying taxes.

This positive feeling is spilling over into people‚s feelings about the economy (somewhat upbeat) and where the country is heading (about where it was in a poll take in December ‚00), according to a new Los Angeles Times Poll. Yet, because of the way Bush won the election (through the Supreme Court decision) and losing the popular vote, most Americans feel he does not have a mandate to push through many of his campaign promises, but should pursue a course of compromise with congressional Democrats over his tax cut proposals, school vouchers, privatizing Social Security and other campaign promises

You seem to be one of those people who spends a lot of his mental energy thinking up ways to call other people racists.

I happen to think that Obama was born in Hawaii, but I am aware of some evidence that Obama was born in Africa. For example, a blurb about one of his books says he was born in Africa. As another example, a member of his father's African family remarked that he was born in Africa.

If some person believes that evidence is compelling, then exactly why does that make him a "racist"?

Isn't "racism" a belief that people of a particular race should be treated differently because of their race?

If a person thinks that the available evidence proves that Obama was born in Africa, then that is simply a matter of his evaluation of evidence about where a particular person was born.

A) The birther movement was spawned out of rumors and rumbling from the Clinton campaign of 2008.

C) Trump has been the subject of personal attacks from all sides since the beginning of his campaign. You're just upset that he's managed to hit back so effectively.

D) The 2 most recent GOP presidents had a family member who spend millions of dollars, only to be among the first to be flattened by the Trump Train. Who is a first-order forcing (e.g. warlock trials, warlock hunts, prosecutorial progression) of setting women and men at each other's throats?

Who is advocating for American dodo dynasties, an evolutionary cul-de-sac?

Who is promoting political congruence (i.e. selective exclusion), diversity (i.e. judgment/discrimination by the color of our skin), chauvinism (e.g. "feminism"), thereby dividing Americans into abrasive classes?

Who started or progressed more wars in recent memory, more social justice adventures (e.g. elective regime change) that is a first-order forcing of catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform (a.k.a. "refugee crises") including a trail of tears from and through Africa to the Middle East to Europe?

Who is advocating for monopoly formation, a progressive fleecing (e.g. redistributive change) of Americans, and a born unPlanned penalty tax?

It seems that the Chinese, the Iranians, the Russians, the Nigerians, are the least of our concern.

It is how Jesus traveled by boat to the pagan country of the Gerasenes and cast demons out of a lunatic called "Legion" into swine who then raced into the sea and drown. The crazy dude was cured, of course, but the pagans were afeared of jesus and asked him to go home. The preacher said it was the first Bay of Pigs invasion and that Jesus invented deviled ham.

The main purpose was to implore the congregation to buck up, go out and mix with the heathen rather than be comfortable with their own kind, e.g, get outside your comfort zone.

Dickin, thanks for writing, let me repeat that Hillary's setting up a private server is not deniable, the question is about her motive, and whether you agree that it was for money, as you say, to pad her personal fortune. It seems you do. The other crimes you claim were to cover up the main crime.

Well, is the crime conspiracy succeeding? Do you regard the Clintons as having gotten richer because she set up a private server? Is the issue the $2 billion in the Clinton Foundation? How much money are we talking about? Do the Clintons really still run the US government?

You may say yes, obviously, and the reason she hasn't been prosecuted as a Republican would have done is that the Clinton conspiracy obtains throughout the government 17 years after Bill left office and more than five years after Hillary left the State Department. Trouble is, no news outlet with the exception of those funded or supported or fed by Russia, is pursuing such a blockbuster story, showing the conspiracy extends to the entire capitalist media. Somehow, Hillary hasn't been caught committing financial crimes or conspiracy to pervert justice.

On the other hand Trump's obscure finances and ties to Russia have caused numerous members of his administration and campaign to plead guilty and cooperate to expiate their role in crimes alleged by the actual US government. Why are Trump's people so much less loyal and reliable than the Clintons'? Is it because they're more patriotic?

Hate and anger are no substitutes for wit. And that shows in your comments
Hillary isn't President. She'll never be President.
We can feel your hate. It's not new - you're a Democrat, and Democrats are the party of hate. You project your hate onto others, but it's really you - it washes out of you. Isn't it tiring, hating all the time?
You are doing exactly what the Russians were doing - stirring up division and hate - you are colluding with the Russians!
Hillary still isn't President. She'll never be President!
You, and your fellow Democrats, are responsible for Trump. You nominated a criminal as your party's candidate for President. What is publicly known and acknowledged provides a reasonable basis to so conclude, her private server, for example. It is "smoking gun" evidence. Yet you feel entitled to lecture us on Trump.

Johnny - may I call you Johnny? You and your fellow Democrats thought that with the media's help, you could beat any Republican candidate, and so you didn't care that you were nominating a criminal. buwaya said...

The emails were not "separate". In fact as per, among other things, per the State Departments own IG's investigation, she never used the official secure system at all, preferring her own.

That alone is a regulatory violation of great magnitude. A lesser being would have been immediately fired, and prosecuted, along with anyone who enabled it, or knew and did not report it immediately. After all, if the Sec State is sending and receiving everything from all the most senior people in the gov, including state secrets, effectively in the clear (so awful is blackberry security) ....

Now, it is impossible for the rest of the government, of which she was the senior cabinet member, to remain ignorant of all this. She sent out a LOT of emails, most of them from her unsecured blackberry.

We come to the question of why all these dogs did not bark.

None have been questioned. The investigators did not bother.

Yet more dogs not barking.

Curiouser and curiouser.

And the press, as we know, is quite good at not being curious, about certain matters, they have quite consistent form here, which itself is rather curious.

In the end one is left with a rather large zone of curiosity. One wonders why Democrats, for instance, do not perceive this anomaly. In their complaints about Trump et al, they swallow this mountain while straining at gnats.

Well, that's a fair criticism John. I dropped the period at the end of the next line as well. The hazards of quick blog commenting.

In the spirit of your "Examine sources, examine motives, examine myself" I suggest that you examine and reconsider the potential criminality of Hillary's server. Forget motive, yoga emails, erased emails, etc. that you keep referring to. Simply setting up that server involved several felonies. She involved others as well, then they took actions to carry out the felonies, so conspiracy as a multiplier. It has been noted here and many other places - there are Americans sitting in jail right now for violating security laws that didn't do 1% of what Hillary and her team did. I noticed at the time that the press just skipped past that part, and only wanted to discuss if any of the emails were "marked Secret", or whatever. Note that intent is not required here, as is typical of security laws. We know that Hillary has admitted setting up the server. The only reason she's not in jail, is that she wasn't charged, even though any ordinary American would have been arrested, tried and convicted by now.

And then you and the Democrats nominated her for President. Based upon your comments, I'd expect that you voted for her. You voted for the criminal. Me, I chose the least worst choice. I was hoping for a minimum of a good Supreme Count pick. Based upon my low expectations, I've been quite pleased with Trump. So now when you come here to complain about Trump, and talk to our hostess as if she's an apostate that deserves the worst of your fury, I find your hate and tears as sweet as the honey my neighbor brings me a couple of times a year. (Better? Not brilliant, I know.)

In fact, there has been, lately, quite an epidemic of incuriosity. Across many spheres. This is quite odd, and quite un-American.

There are places where this is normal, where it is known, implicitly, that one must not "go there", for the sake of, well, the interests of everyone directly involved, the public excepted.

And this leads to perpetual ineffectiveness or inefficiency of this system or that process, of things not getting done, or funds somehow vanishing, or all sorts of monkey business.

This was not the American way. The American abroad was a nexus of chaos, of overturning, of the application of the hot needle of inquiry (thank you David Niven). He made people uncomfortabe, disrupted rest, made the rich poor and the poor rich, went where angels feared to tread, and made devils consider retirement.

He was like, in an ideal sort, one of my heroes (unknown in his own country, to its shame) an American businessman in Manila, Chick Parsons. A self made man, an adventurer, a rich man, and a USN reservist. A very curious man. He was in the stevedoring business, and my Godfather, also in that business, knew him well.

When war came he was called up into Naval Intelligence -as a spy. He pretended to be a neutral diplomat and so got himself and his family repatriated from the Japanese occupied country. He reported to MacArthur in Australia, and was sent back by submarine, to gather guerilla reports and collect his own information. He pretended to be a native (at which he was very able! curiosity has many benefits) and proceeded, in disguise, throughout the Japanese occupied islands, meeting everyone that mattered. My grandfather put him up for a few days in his safehouse. He returned, again by submarine, and dictated a very lengthy report, entirely from memory, as he could not safely carry notes. The report is a classic of its kind - the original, given to Willoughby, MacArthurs intelligence chief, is available online, though I will have to look for the link.

Thats the kind of American we knew.

But here in his homeland this curious fellow, this revealer, this bold, enterprising sort, is becoming extinct. As we see so many examples of this, such as our friend Pickering. Chick Parsons he is not. Pickering will not risk torture and beheading to find the truth. He is a weak descendant of great men.

Mr Fab, thanks for writing and engaging in this inquiry. But I am sorry that you pass so quickly over my point about motive, for it has to be in examining why Hillary committed these crimes that we can understand them, and explain why they have gone unprosecuted by the government. I thought some of you maintain that part of the reason for setting up the server is that the Clintons lead an international criminal conspiracy focused on their personal enrichment, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars or maybe $2 billion. OK, that's a motive.

Instead, you seem to be arguing that if she had been in IT or HR department at some place like Goldman Sachs or Walmart or fill in the blanks, she would have been fired, or jailed. Yet the government hasn't decided to prosecute, nor the media to investigate, a crime that perhaps amounts to fraud.

Also, I like to tweak Ann a bit because my perception is she's a big girl and knows what she's doing and is honest with herself. Clearly, the unmasking and/or leaking of the Flynn-Kislyak telephone call was illegal. There may have been a broad FISA warrant to tap Kislyak, but there was not likely a warrant to tap Flynn.

If the product of that illegal taping was used to bully Flynn into a guilty plea, Mueller has a 4th Amendment problem. Newly assigned Judge Sullivan saw a LOT of prosecutorial misconduct in the Ted Stevens case.

One of the footnotes on the page mentioned other heroes/heroines:

^ Blanche was a volunteer at Emmanuel Methodist Hospital, Tondo, Manila. Betrayed by a Japanese double-agent, Franco Vera Reyes, in January 1944, Blanche Jurika, Dr. Hawthorne Darby, nurse Helen Jonaline Wilk, Methodist pastor Mary Litt Boyd Stagg, and a woman named Sybil were taken by the Kempeitai to the Cementerio del Norte where they were beheaded and buried on 29 or 30 August 1944: "Blanche was dead, executed in late August, 1944, hands tied behind her, blindfolded and kneeling over a newly-dug trench somewhere in Manila’s North Cemetery, killed with over two dozen other civilians accused of various acts of conspiracy by the Japanese. For Blanche and the few other American women, death was by beheading by Samurai sword. For the men, it had been a single shot to the back of the head." —Louis Jurika [2] Their common grave was found by Thomas Walker Jurika in 1945 with the reluctant help of another double-agent, Richard Sakakida.[3]

John, regarding your wanting to know what Hillary's motive was, and why she wasn't charged - You are correct, I don't care that much about her motive, as the felonies I referenced aren't predicated on her motive or intent. Your comment that she wanted to use the server to facilitate graft could be correct - we already have some possible examples, such as Uranium One, and the $145 million contribution to the Clinton Fund from the Russians.

I'm curious, are you really interested in why the feds didn't charge her, or are you raising that point only to argue that if she was really guilty, the FBI and the Obama DoJ wouldn't possibly have let her go, no sirree, so she must be innocent!

Me, I'm willing to wait a while before coming to a firm conclusion. The DoJ IG report is due out in a few weeks, and while the MSM is not really covering it, there are clear signs that one or several serious scandals are about to break, ones that even the compliant MSM won't be able to ignore. Good luck finding any British volunteers working on the Donald Trump campaign.

In what the Mueller indictments clearly state is a violation of U.S. law, the Hillary Clinton campaign was specifically inviting “at least 70 British Labour activists” to campaign for Clinton in Charlotte, North Carolina. And North Carolina wasn’t the only swing state of the 2016 campaign to get visits from British Leftists at the behest of the Clinton campaign.

Mr. Fab, if we disregard motive, how do establish the meaning of the crime? Was Hillary's private server part of the intl crime conspiracy aimed at netting her billions or was it a bad judgement that would have gotten her fired, if she was Goldman's IT chief? I think that matters, and probably matters to the investigators, who haven't prosecuted.

Motive is so important, illustrated for example by Trump's firing of Comey: was there a corrupt intent? And also, prosecutors have to judge, how corrupt? Again, as regards Hillary's potential prosecutors, what do you reckon is their motive in squelching the probe? A share of her billions? Perhaps that's what the DoJ IG will conclude, I'll look forward to that as well.

By the way I didn't support Hillary as she was running and always said she would be a bad president. Thanks for indulging me in complaining that this new fellow is just plain awful by my squishy standards.

If you want heroic American women, there were lots in 1941-45, in that part of the world.

Yay Panlilios story (Irish-Filipino-American) would make an interesting movie, with a very PC, "multi ethnic" heroine. She was an experienced prewar journalist and broadcaster in Manila in the English-language press. Very much a "Girl Friday" in speech and manner - see the Rosalind Russell-Cary Grant movie for what I mean. A divorced mother with three kids, she joins US Army Intelligence as a "stay behind" agent when Manila is evacuated.

She was suspected of passing information by radio, so, warned, she fled to the hills, where she joined up with a band of guerillas, married their chieftain, an ex-truck driver, and became the "den mother" organizer of guerilla operations for three years, her main weapon being her typewriter - people tended to obey typed orders better. The husband and wife pair were some of the few guerilla chiefs to survive the brutal Luzon guerrilla/intelligence war - the casualty rate was extreme, most agents and guerilla chiefs didnt last long. By 1945 she was a Philippine Army colonel leading a regiment attached to the US 43rd Infantry Division.

She was the only one of the survivors to write her own memoir (several other American guerrillas had biographers/ghostwriters).

Her book, "The Crucible" is $ 3.99 on Amazon.

A strong contender for an equally good book is John Keats semi-novelized account of Wendell Fertig.

"I never get tired of reading it - saying it: Hillary Clinton will never be President"

Yes! The best thing about this President's day is knowing that The Donald is in the WH and Hillary is not.

The investigators have to be suspected of corruption, as it is criminal behavior regardless of purpose.

More, everyone involved, including all who sent matters of official government business to her private email, also violated US law, and everyone who engaged in this crime has to be removed and prosecuted. Thats a lot of people, many, very likely, still in government service. This includes Ex-President Obama.

And yet more, everyone even AWARE of this who did not take proper action, likewise.

This level of sanction is required if one is to even pretend to maintain security and discipline.

This is why what she did is so fundamentally destructive. The entire security process of the highest reaches of the US government were rendered useless. The whole world (or their intelligence services) could read a large chunk of what the USG was thinking. The only people in the world who dont know what the Obama administration was up to are the US public.

The idea of opening that can of worms probably scared Comey and co. silly. In part because of the vast reach of the failure, but not least because they certainly knew about it from the first day, and did nothing.

So I've finally watched some of the Olympics.

Why are people not watching? I repeat -- one reason is made up "sports" like freestyle skiing, like this stupid half-pipe thing I watched. It's annoying watching skateboarding dudes do this kind of thing and it was annoying having NBC put so much emphasis on this rather than a traditional Olympic sport.

And then, for all of the blabbering of the inane announcers, I'm watching the ice dancing and it was like watching on C-SPAN, with a complete absence of any play-by-play or commentary explaining the elements met or needed. And except for first place, there was no leaderboard to be able to follow the whole competition or put things in context. The comments they did make after the end of a skate also offered nothing of substance or value.

Good Lord, just imagine it.
Your Secretary of State (your Foreign Minister) simply sent and received into her insecure systems (there were actually several) all high level communications with the rest of the cabinet and high level sub-cabinet officials, sharing, most certainly, communications from and to foreign governments and US intelligence agencies. Every one of these was certainly intercepted, as Washington is the most spied-on place on Earth.

And its not just a US problem. The US is critical, everyone, even its enemies, depends on a competent US government. This extreme idiocy was a global threat.

And every one of your security systems and security agencies, and the whole executive branch, tolerated this madness for years. And you don't wonder why?

If one of Metternichs clerks had decoded and copied his letters, left them lying about in some Vienna tavern, and let foreign spies steal them, the good Prince would have had the scoundrel hanged.

Talking about pens, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has taken upon itself to rewrite the Congressional districts based on certain rules that they said the state constitution required

That would conflict with both the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution and Article 1, Section 4, which states that: "The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof." Neither the state supreme court nor the state constitution have a role in the process.

Quid pro quo. This may be the single reason why the 1% and their domestic servants deemed Trump to be an existential threat that merited a high risk campaign to override the democratic will of the People, and could and may yet expose their influence of elections, governments, institutions, and processes.

Who am I kidding. Trump may be good, but he's not that good, or secure. Most likely, he will become a "good American", and go along to get along. That is the historical standard in environments with virtual and actual monopolies.

re: quid pro quo

Go along to get along or "good Americans". Also, it seems, Soviet-era relics who emerge from the swamp to prey on people's latent fears. As well as swamp creatures (e.g. social industry) who manipulate people through emotional and paradoxical arguments. We live in interesting, politically congruent times, in the twilight fringe.

was it a bad judgement that would have gotten her fired, if she was Goldman's IT chief? I think that matters, and probably matters to the investigators, who haven't prosecuted.

Motive is so important, illustrated for example by Trump's firing of Comey: was there a corrupt intent?

So bad judgment is out as a motive for Trump, but front and center for Hillary? Of course with Hillary, the emails covered a time when she was collecting hundreds of millions of dollars for her corrupt enterprise, that even her own daughter tried to reform, but when her daughter put in a new head to the foundation, he was quickly pushed out for the old hands from the good old days of the late nineties.

Dickin expresses a paranoia of the tribe, but seems uninformed about the politics of the federal police operated by the current government, led by Republicans.

Since you trust the press so much, why don’t you go read the WaPo about how Mueller and Comey were not only great friends, “brothers in arms,” but were proteges of Eric Holder. the same Eric Holder who put together the Marc Rich pardon, you know, the pardon of a tax cheat to the tune of $200 million dollars? That Eric Holder?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2017/live-updates/trump-white-house/trump-comey-and-russia-how-key-washington-players-are-reacting/brothers-in-arms-the-long-friendship-between-mueller-and-comey/?utm_term=.7a45586ead6f

Why didn’t Mueller recuse himself?

And at the bottom of it, since your objection has to do with your faith that the press will do their jobs and cover the Clintons fairly, why don’t you tell me about how you can read this fact set, and come to the conclusion that Bill Clinton, Harvey Weinstien’s close friend, didn’t forcibly rape Juanita Broaddrick.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/1999/03/is_juanita_broaddrick_telling_the_truth.html

Notice that liberal Slate reserves judgement, but if you read it yourself, I don’t see how you can come to any other conclusion but that he did it. Maybe you can. The reason I think this is so important is that it goes to your point about trust that the media will cover inconvenient facts about the Clintons. And remember, this wasn’t some starlet looking for a break into the big time, it was a constituent, a woman business owner, who wanted to talk to the governor of Arkansas IN THE LOBBY of a hotel, who was inveigled back to a private room, Weinstein style, by His Nibs, himself. He utterly dismissed the self that Broaddrick presented as an empowered woman seeking to offer ideas on her industry, and converted her, in his mind, to a walking vagina whose mouth was making unfortunate noises. Some feminist.

n.n. You know you and I disagree to an extent on abortion, although I wouldn’t be heart broken if your side won at the Federal level and it was left to a democratic vote at the states, but you are one of the top commenters here, in my book.

I can’t help but notice that the male commenters here who support abortion the loudest, also find time to brag about using women like Kleenex, basically. It’s almost like unfettered abortion is a kind of “tax cut” for them.

I have to give J. P. credit for novelty in legal theorizing here. Unless we know exactly why a person (let's call her H.C.) commits an illegal act, how can we consider it illegal? along with If the media don't report it, it's not a crime.
