The strange fear of infuriating Trump.

"Government mandarins are urging Prince Harry not to invite the Obamas to his wedding for fear of infuriating Donald Trump," The Sun reports.
There are deep fears among senior Foreign Office and No10 officials that another perceived national snub will make it impossible for Theresa May to meaningfully engage with Trump.

A senior government source said: “Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it’s causing a lot of nervousness.

“Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a Royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen. “Conversations are ongoing about and ministers will eventually have to decide. If the PM lays down the law, Harry will just have to suck it up.”
Sounds more like the Queen might be infuriated. I don't get the idea of Trump being infuriated at not getting invited to Harry's wedding. That seems absurd, but then I don't get the idea of Trump as a short-tempered hothead.

ADDED: Here's a list of people who went to Prince William's wedding. William is much more important than Harry. The United States was represented by our ambassador, not by a President. There's no idea here that President Trump should be invited to Harry's wedding, just that an ex-President might attend and would need to get some disorienting special treatment. But why would that infuriate Trump? Isn't it a step down for Obama, being a wedding guest? It's the normalization of Obama. He's a friend of Harry's. And that's confusing for other Brits.

I never got the sense that Harry formed such close bonds with the Obamas, but I don't read the tabloid press and have no idea.

By his very choice of spouse, when there were something like 9 million other candidates indicates that he likes to carve his own path, including raising the two finger salute to Trump just because the Guardian cheers him on in that stance.

While I don't think that Trump is hot tempered, I do think he is vindictive. Any of those cushy extras that Prince Celebrities like aren't likely to happen for Harry and his bride. Would Trump demand that State hold up their visas?

Possible.

Then again, this also feels like the media trying to pick fights between sovereigns just to insult Trump.

Two things I know about Harry so far:

1. He really wants the Obamas at his wedding.

2. He already gave up hunting, which he loves, because his fiancé doesn't like it.

Hmmmm.

If many Heads of State are invited to the wedding and not our President, that would be a big snub. I could see Melania going as our representative. Nancy Reagan, not the President, led the entourage that went to Charles and Diana's wedding. If the Obamas are personal friends that's fine but it would not right for them to represent the US in an official capacity. The British need to get a grip on their TDS.

"Perceived national snub" raises the question, "perceived by whom?" The answer, which we can borrow from Ms. Clinton, is deplorables.

It's not Trump the mandarins are afraid of infuriating. It's their own citizens.

The deep state decides in darkness.

The potential infuriating of Trump can't be that he's not getting an invitation. It would have to be only that there's something akin to a presidential visit and it's not him.

But Obama's visit would be subordinated to the celebration of Prince Harry. I don't see a basis for envy.

Chuck said...

It seems to me, Althouse, that you've got one thing right and one thing wrong in this.

What you got right is that indeed, the wedding of a lower-tier Royal would not warrant an invitation, or an acceptance by, a President of the United States. This is not something that Trump as President should be expected to attend. And further, your idea that Barack and Michelle Obama's attending as a couple, as friends of Harry's, and as civilians, is a diplomatic normalization of Obama, not any sort of elevation.

What you got wrong, was your notion; "I don't get the idea of Trump as a short-tempered hothead..." Because Trump is all about showiness and appearances and who's in and who's out and who got an invite and who didn't. And of course Trump's maniacal obsession with all things Obama is layered on top of that.

From Joe Conason's book, we know about private-citizen Trump calling Clinton advisor Doug Band and complaining that he should have gotten an invitation to Chelsea Clinton's wedding but didn't and wanted to know who he (Trump) needed to talk to.

And then there was Trump's own statement about a Clinton donation that Trump says was to secure the Clinton's presence at his own (third) wedding to Melania Knauss:
"When they call, I give. And you know what? When I need something from them two years later, three years later, I call them, they are there for me," Trump said. "With Hillary Clinton, I said be at my wedding, and she came to my wedding. You know why? She didn’t have a choice, because I gave. I gave to a foundation that, frankly, that foundation is supposed to do good. I didn’t know her money would be used on private jets going all over the world."

Hey, when we can't take the Washington Post and the New York Times seriously anymore, maybe it is time to give The Sun a whirl as our paper of record.

Though I still think Daily Mail clickbait is the richest info-mine, if you know how to read it.

Chuck said...

What I meant to add to my quote from Trump immediately above, as Althouse had already noted the issue, was that Trump did make a donation to the Clinton Foundation (through the Donald Trump Foundation, apparently) for $100,000, but it was four years after his wedding. So I dunno; maybe there was some other favor before then.

For me, the point about Trump being a Clinton Foundation donor is old news. But something to consider on this comments page is Trump's attitude about the prestige involved in wedding invitations.

Trump often responds via speech or twitter when he believes that he has been attacked or insulted. Is not getting an invitation to the spare's wedding an insult? Is inviting the Obamas but not him an insult? And how does he see it?
The Brit press is clearly trying to stir up controversy here, as they often do successfully. Remember when the tabloids were on a campaign against pedophiles, and in reaction some benighted subjects of Her Majesty rioted at a pediatrician's office? Good times, good times.
Did Trump invite Charles, Harry, or William to his wedding to Melania in 2005? Or Tony Blair? Did he invite George W Bush? Who knows or cares?
I expect that Trump will tweet out something if he feels that he or the presidency have been insulted. That will take him about 30 seconds. There will be no other consequences.

Inga...Allie Oop said...

Obama's dad was black and his mom white. Markle had a white dad and black mom.

Anyway, Markle may end up unhappy due to Barack Obama's penchant for being the bride at every wedding. No bride I ever met, wanted to be upstaged at her own wedding.

Maybe it’s because the cut in the corporate tax rate is eviscerating economic advantages that the US had foolishly surrendered to our competitors in Europe and China. I think invitations to leaders of foreign governments or their representatives are determined by the rank (in the hierarchy of the royal family) of the person getting married. Charles is the heir to the throne. When he married Diana, high-ranking people were invited, heads of state I guess, if the Reagans were invited. William's rank is lower than his father's, so lower-level government reps were invited. Harry is lower yet. I don't know whom they'll invite to represent the U.S. government, but it wouldn't be the president no matter who held the office. I would suppose that if Harry wanted the Obamas invited as private citizens who are his friends, that could be done. As others have pointed out, there would be the issue of the protection they require as former occupants of the White House. Presumably the Queen and her staff would decide if the invitation would be appropriate.

Inga, as the Unknown Troll explained once that she was not here to discuss, but to disrupt and to mock, well, mock as well as her limited powers allow, anyway.

Anyway, Trump should let them know privately that he doesn’t care, and publicly accept the political benefits of a “snub.”

My recollection of Obama’s 2009 state visit to the UK is that he and Michelle went out of their way to be uncouth and offensive. In 2016 she received him at Windsor, not Buckingham, which some saw as a mild snub. If anyone is infuriated at the prospect of Barack and Michelle being invited to Harry’s wedding, it is the groom’s grandmother.

MacMacConnell said...

On the other hand, Harry is a no body unless his brother dies, so why become even more insignificant at you own wedding by having the most powerful man in the world attend. Why not invite Obama, he's just a black Jimmy Carter now.

Darrell said...

The Queen probably intervened to get the photos of Harry flipping the bird to Melania taken down. Most likely called it a matter in the National interest--given uncertainties with trade and security post-Brexit. I wonder if she issued a formal ban.

Barring public apologies from Harry and the Royal family, Trump should definitely not attend the wedding.

Hagar said...

The wedding of the sixth in line is not a state occasion.
However, someone from the US embassy will no doubt attend; perhaps even the ambassador himself.

Darrell said...

Trump coverage in Great Britain has been close to 100% negative. And, like here. the negative stories are assigned in advance of anything Trump does. Even the Daily Mail has gone Left when they hired a shitload of new American reporters for their expanded US operations. Left is all you can get out of US Journo schools. One exception at The Mail has been Piers Morgan--although that may be because he likes to play the contrarian.

Chuck and Inga lost any ability to call for civility when they launched their own attacks against various commenters. Multiple times. And some--from Chuck--100 times more vicious than he had received. What kind of "fuckhead" did you call that poor girl a few weeks ago, Chuck? She responded that she wasn't that variety "fuckhead," if I recall.

I struggle with this problem.

Give it right back, to the idiot commenters who baselessly accuse me of being a lefty, a Democrat, a moby, a plant, a Soros-operative, et cetera? It is beyond counting; the number of times that I have published a comment that is squarely aimed at the substance of an Althouse post, in which I express criticism of Trump, and the response from numerous Althouse commenters is to attack me personally. Attacking me personally and naming me, when Althouse has specifically asked everyone to please stop doing that. Attacking me and naming me personally, when -- invariably -- an initial comment from me on any given page has nothing to do with any individual commenter apart from the blog's author.

The insults and appellations with regard to me are so regular that they have become Althouse memes. Like "LLR." And the (to me) undecipherable "Bowe Bergdahl Republican." And more:

"Titty-twister." A despicable Trumpian nickname that I got only because another commenter made it up as something I supposedly said. Later confessed to having made it up entirely, but now continues to try to bait me with it.

Another commenter's repeated allegations that I somehow failed to do my job as a Michigan Republican Party poll watcher in Detroit in 2016. When in fact I didn't volunteer for that service in 2016 (the first time in the 2000's that I didn't volunteer).

There's more, that I'd prefer not to mention here.

So sometimes, in response to that sort of taunting and lying about me, I fire back in writing. Because I have learned that the Althouse posting rules are so poorly enforced, and because I wouldn't take any of this, from any of you, if we were standing face to face. I'm not sorry for anything I've written here. I am sorry that the Althouse Rules, such as they are in practice, are so lousy.

I sympathize with the moderation-technology available to Althouse. She explains that she doesn't have the ability to easily block certain commenters, and that it is difficult and distasteful for her to delete individual posts. I understand.

Again, it's part of my own struggle between aggressively defending myself, versus requesting Althouse to defend the integrity of her comments pages and her own rules for commenting.

I like reading semi-thoughtful comments like this when they cause me to "look it up," as they say.

Also, I am a bit of an Anglophile, having lived and worked in London as an intern to a prominent Tory MP in the earliest Thatcher days.

It was the Daily Telegraph ("Torygraph") that went off, mostly, on Obama. And they were again running the mythical story about Obama getting rid of the Churchill bust (Churchill's bust was replaced by Lincoln's bust in the Oval Office, and Churchill then went on display in the residence, as it had before), and some other piddly things.

So powerful and successful is Trump now that not only is his presence a draw at an event but also his absence. I hear Eminem is furious that he insulted Trump and Trump didn't respond. This non-response disrupted an entire PR campaign aimed at boosting Eminem's sales. And similarly, stories about Prince's Harry's wedding in the dying media will be more interesting if Trump can be associated with the wedding in some capacity. Some clever PR guy realized that pix of "Trump not at the wedding" are just as good as "Trump at the wedding" and much better than "Prince Harry at his own wedding." Completely lacking in drawing power: "Obama at Prince Harry's wedding."

And what about Hillary and Bill - are they going? The younger sons of royal families are supposed to maintain contacts with opposition figures in case such figures come to power. But the opposition in the US has several parts. Is Harry lining up with the Obama/Jarret axis of incompetence against the Clinton axis of squalor? And Bernie? And Pocahontas?

See, here we go again. I did not want to bring this up. My detractors want to bring it up all the time. Me, just above:

There's more, that I'd prefer not to mention here.

So Bad Lieutenant brings up Barron Trump. Because more than a year ago, when Trump was making alarming statements on the campaign trail about a causal autism-vaccine relationship (as Trump had done many times in the past), I had posted links to published stories that Barron Trump was rumored to be autistic, and Trump family laywers threatened litigation to shut down those stories and particularly an amateur (posted by someone who self-acknowledges himself to be on the autism spectrum) who posted a YouTube video.

Bad Lieutenant wants to smear me with a vague and non-specific meme, without stating the basis for the story.

In more than a year, every single time that "Barron Trump" has been mentioned in connection with me or by me is when an antagonistic Althouse commenter does this.

For the record, Trump family lawyers claim that "Barron Trump is not autistic." Here's one of several links; this one is the US Weekly link:

I recall photographs of the Obamas visiting with William and Katherine and Harry. Harry and Michelle seemed to have a particularly close connection and obviously enjoyed each others' company. Maybe that friendship sparked an interest in him finding an African wife? Never thought of that before. Maybe there's also concern about ruffling feathers about that race issue, especially considering that recent brooch embarrassment by Princess Michael? IDK.

I doubt that Trump would care much about not being invited to Harry's wedding since they've never met. But the press will undoubtedly make a big story out of the closeness of the royal family to the Obamas and suggest the royals would never get on with the Trumps. That might cast a shadow on Trump's visit, as if Trump might not measure up, but really? BTW, am I supposed to capitalize Royals? I really don't know. A lot of petty nonsense as far as I'm concerned.

No no no no no. no engage. It derails the thread.

I'd much rather talk about Meghan Markle's clothing choices. The Queen had a picture of Meghan and Harry during her televised Christmas greeting.

I think it's possible that Buckingham Palace is concerned that an invite might cause offence. Are people in Parliament worried?

I dunno - how good are these sources in the Sun? It's possible there is worry. However, it would be odd for a sitting President to be invited to Harry's wedding as part of protocol, no? He's not high enough in succession.

There was a international incident because of those videos Trump posted on twitter. It's possible Parliament is worried. I'd want to see better sources then just the Sun to believe it.

One of the positive things about Trump's election is that people now realize that there are a lot of other people out there just like them, and they can speak up in the face of liberal bull without a cascade of angry remarks following. Well, unless you're at a "holiday" faculty party at Cornell or Ithaca College.

The lefties and LLR allies were running out of other fake news to peddle so they do what they always do: write an article with an assumption/projection/plain old lie and then proceed to comment as if what they concocted is established truth.

There is no reason for the opposition media to do otherwise as their voice-actuated lemmings like Inga and certain LLR's will always fall into line.

Once again though, we confront the question of whether or not having an opposition base made up of the Inga's & Chuck's of the world actually, in the long run, makes the dems stronger or weaker.

I would argue the evidence is in and though it might help in the short run to have the same army of automatons like those mentioned above amplifying the fake news, in the long run it is a strategic detriment as the truth slowly "gets its pants on".

Trump's tweets, and the clear increasing pushback of the republicans in the Senate and House against the dem/LLR allied non-sense re: Russia indicates that there is now a general understanding amongst the republicans that the collusion lie advanced by the lefties/LLR's has collapsed and, worse yet for the lefties/LLR allies the evidence of democrat actual collusion with Russia AND improper domestic spying is getting closer to critical mass.

That, all by itself, goes a long way to explaining the behavior of our lefties and their LLR allies.

Now she is defending one.

It's almost as if Inga can't remember what she has posted from day to day. Almost, almost, as if history began anew this morning.

I particularly enjoy Inga "missing" Meade's rather ordinary and plainly true observation that any criticism of obama, LITERALLY ANY, was immediately labeled as racist. And if that racism was not clear enough, the lefties and LLR allies "helped" us all by making sure that lots and lots of brand new innocuous stuff was now "racist".

Inga and LLR Chuck hardest hit.

I don't think that is possible because, once again, Michelle doesn't feel proud of her country anymore.

So, lets tally this up:

At 53 years of age, Michelle was not proud of her country for 44 years, then proud of her country for 8 years, and then not proud of her country for an extra year...and counting.

Now, as a private citizen attending a wedding for a family that basically pays lip service to every lefty cause while living a rather "comfortable" lifestyle at public expense, that would be right up the obama's alley.

Better yet if multiple speakers at the wedding trashed the US. That would be absolutely "perfect".

Laurence, very respectfully, I can't accept your premise.

You might well think that Trumpists aren't "emotional babies," and that's okay.

But I think the central feature of Trumpism (and to some extent the Tea Party movement) is their adoption of one of the most distasteful features of modern progressive identity politics. With modern progressive identity politicians, it is all about a kind of wounded-victim identity. ('You disrespect me because I am a woman; because I am a black; because I am a Native American, or gay, or Hispanic-surnamed,' et cetera. I've been hurt, by the status quo.)

That is the precise sort of cultural grievance victimization being stoked by Trumpism. 'We're getting reverse-discriminated. Our government is beating up on us. The media is against us. The deep state is against us. We, as a group of white male working-class folks can't get a fair shake. They won't even let us say Merry Christmas.'

For us Deplorables, Trump's first year is looking pretty great. The economy is booming. Budget passed, tax reform passed. The deficit is still a problem, and entitlements a looming disaster. but baby steps. The U.S. has finally stopped taking everybody else's shit on the world stage and started to re-assert its leadership. Again, irrelevant and cannot be proved.

All we can judge are what individuals say and how they conduct themselves over time.

I won't deny that you can find some crybaby Trump supporters but for the most part, Trump voters were not buying what Michael Moore was selling, that, as you say, "We, as a group of white male working-class folks can't get a fair shake. "

What, for the most part, Trump voters are looking for is a new pro-Americanism — a rejection of the Carter-Clinton-Bush-Obama softness — a continuation of the Reagan Revolution.

Podhoretz has always called himself a Conservative and not a party Republican.

I do not think Chuck is a Moby. I think he is upset Trump took over the party. There's a fight in the Republican party over Trump. I mean, it's been playing out in public & it's not a secret.

You are in no position to attest to that and state it as a fact.

According to the Lefties and Mobys at this site...nobody voted for Hillary...which is surprising since she won the popular vote as we've been told ad nauseum.

"I am only concerned with the reality of operational tactics/rhetoric and actions."

yeah but Chuck/Inga aren't running a media campaign on this blog. I think Chuck is trying to understand why fellow Republicans don't agree with him.

I'm obsessed with data. For me it is a data point if someone voted 3rd party or if someone voted for Trump despite dislike.

I'm not stating it as a fact that's why I ended it with a question mark.

In 2016, many of us saw some of this in Trump and none of it in any of the other candidates (except maybe Scott Walker or Rand Paul). In Hillary, we only saw more Obama, Bush and Carter.

ok, I'm derailing thread, so I'll just post one last data point:

People held Hillary Clinton in extreme dislike. Not just Republicans, Not Just Conservatives. Young People, Bernie Supporters, LOTS of people.

60-80 year old women liked her and had this dream of a woman president. They are pretty much the only ones who liked her.

a lot of 20-45 year olds disliked her. Even leftists. Even women. Dislike is too mild. many were disgusted.

Drago said...

Well Meade, whether or not anyone who voted for Trump saw a little Reagan in him, we are certainly getting that in terms of policy from Trump.

LLR Chuck hardest hit.

Not really. We can handle more than one thing at a time.

As for your other points, they seem to align with the analysis of the results.

My goodness Drago, of course I don't know that for sure. I'm making a personal judgement.

This is my reasoning: he's acting A LOT like a party Republican who doesn't understand what happened to his party. He's talking to you all as if you should understand him.

He seems confused about why you all don't understand him. He doesn't understand why he fit in on this blog until Trump's election and now he's an outcast.

That's why I believe him. It rings true to me. It's my personal judgement. You disagree, and I hear you. You disagree with my POV. That's fine. We disagree on this point.

Meade: "It's almost 2018 and I'm seeing more and more Reagan in Donald Trump. As my friend Glenn might say: faster please"

That's what is even more amazing. So many of the Never Trumpers who were old Reagan hands are now arguing vociferously against Trump even when Trump is delivering more conservative and potentially libertarian policies than we ever dreamed possible.

That is why LLR Chuck is so frightened of his own shadow and lashing out like an insane Occupy Wall Streeter (that's the only kind, by the way). Trump is delivering everything that was considered forever gone just 13 months ago by the conservatives, and that leaves the Never Trumpers and whatever LLR Chuck is adrift. Forcing them to change their talking points, as Scott Adams predicted.

Which pisses LLR Chuck off even more!

LLR Chuck has decided the only way to save face is to pretend ANY republican could have won, ANY republican would have enacted the same or BETTER(!) policies, etc.

It's all post hoc nonsense of course, but there's nothing left in the rhetorical cupboard.

I dunno. Reagan had a really good relationship with Thatcher and the UK. Those tweets caused an "incident" in the UK a few weeks ago. Really wish he wouldn't tweet like that about allies.

Anyways, back to Harry and Meaghan. I think Harry is too far down in succession for it to matter much who comes to his wedding. It would be like Prince Andrew's wedding. He's too far away from the Crown for a President to attend, unless the President is a personal friend. Certainly he shouldn't attend as a matter of State.

On a side note -- I think Meaghan will get pregnant soon. And I think Kate and William's children are adorable and am glad another is coming. I'm happy to see more baby pictures.

I find the blatant Trump sycophancy cringe inducing and feel embarrased for those who engage in it.

Wow sounds like a real problem around here. “Sycophancy” here in our little blog-commenting zone. My. But where? Where is this alleged sycophancy you lie about? Cut and paste an example for us. I don’t see it. I think this is another of your unsupported ad homonym attack’s with no substance or basis. Prove it.

Just cite three truly sycophant-like comments to help me understand your assertion. Three from this post that is allegedly rife the stuff.

In my POV it's mainly about foreign policy. It's not the official policy so much as tone and tweets and doing things in a timely manner. Like the slow appointment of ambassadors.

I believe Trump would be at 45 approval or above if not for the tone/tweets. My POV I know others disagree.

Well that was easy. Trump vs. Hillary. (Although I don't understand what "Bush" is doing in your list with Bush and Carter. "Bush/Bushes" = Thomas, Roberts and Alito. Carter/Clinton/Obama = Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomoyor and Kagan.)

What's a lot harder, Laurence, is anybody's trying to explain a vote for Obama, followed by a vote for Trump.

I will never accept, and don't even understand, how anyone figured Trump was the best nominee for the GOP. Trump's losing by 2 points to the worst Dem candidate since Al Smith (but threading the needle for an electoral college win) is a very limited recommendation.

Gahrie said...

If you posit that Chuck really is a Republican, than the best that can be said is that he is an example of exactly how Trump happened.

The revolt started on live TV when Rick Santelli had his Howard Beale moment. Then the Republican base began to self organize and protest both the Democrats and the Republican Establishment. The Republican Establishment, instead of listening to the base, demonized the Tea Party movement and often worked with the Democrats to oppose it. Next Cantor was shown the door. The Republican Establishment refused to listen...and actually started running Jeb for president!

If the Republican Establishment had listened to the Tea Party...Trump never happens. If the Republican Establishment had been willing to nominate Cruz or Rubio, Trump never happens.

However the Republican Establishment doesn't care about the Republican base (just as the Democrats take the Democratic base for granted) or even the American people, they care about preserving the power and prestige of the Republican Establishment...just like the Left does.

To grant them the best of intentions, the Republican Establishment has behaved exactly like the pigs at the end of Animal Farm, and have been co-opted by their former enemies.

Wwww, he is maniacally obsessed with Trump. This goes beyond mere displeasure with our Presidential choice and runs headlong into derangement.

That's because you will never accept that Jeb couldn't have beaten Hillary...and everyone except the GOP Establishment knew that.

You're talking about the retweet? I agree — he needs to be more careful. Reagan made a few mistakes too. And it turns out Theresa May is no Margaret Thatcher. Much the pity.

I'm not ready to go that far yet.....

However, it is interesting that the two most conservative, and successful Republican presidents in the last fifty years were both former Democrats and both were part of the entertainment industry. I posit that some of their success is due to the fact that they knew the enemy.
