Liberal media pats Jimmy Kimmel on the back for helping Roy Moore get elected.

That's not what they think he did. They think he was brilliant and really drove home the awfulness of Roy Moore. But that's what he did. I mean, if I know Alabamans, and I don't, really. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think this kind of thing exalts Roy Moore in the eyes of the relevant electorate.

Emily Yahr, at Washington Post, does a phenomenal job of showing how it looks inside the liberal cocoon, in "Read Jimmy Kimmel’s scathing response to Roy Moore after their ‘Twitter war.'"

The Jimmy Kimmel show sent its comedian down to Alabama to disrupt a Roy Moore rally that was taking place in Magnolia Springs Baptist Church in Theodore, Alabama. That gave Roy Moore the opportunity to put up this tweet:

That tweet gave Jimmy Kimmel the opportunity to put himself at the center of the important Senate race, and he did it in a way that is powerfully viral to Moore haters:

Kimmel did a great job, within his own realm, playing to his audience, going viral through the Washington Post and other liberal media outlets, but I think it will help Roy Moore in Alabama. I don't want to say comedians should restrain themselves lest they skew an election. I want vibrant, vicious comedy that flies free from political practicalities. But I think Jimmy Kimmel just helped Roy Moore a lot.

Now, is the Washington Post stupid not to go into the political downside of Kimmel's comedy? Maybe not. Maybe it's choosing to amuse and soothe its readers, and it's all for the good of circulation. It's too late to undo what Kimmel did, and the clip is viral whether WaPo participates in the vitality or not, and if it doesn't, it risks looking dull and unaware of what's happening in pop-culture media. And anyway, they already knew by yesterday that Roy Moore had made it through his ordeal so it was okay to give up on trying to affect the election and move on to the painful enjoyment of hating the new Senator.

I don't live in Alabama, but do business there several times per year. The "coasties" in their perpetual arrogance believe they can belittle and shame the unwashed flyover denizen into supporting their preferred candidate. That's not the way it works -- and I'm not so sure that our betters will ever awake to that reality.

Whether Democrats in Ann Arbor or San Fransisco know it or not, Republicans in Alabama know that this same press, and these same Democrats covered for Bill Clinton's rapes for decades.

Great turn of phrase.

I said a long time ago, the more they attack Moore, the more they enable him to win. Their cocoon does not allow them to see outside of their echo chamber (love to mix those metaphors).

And why would you vote for someone who admittedly would support murder of unborn babies over another who has denied a concocted charge of sex abuse 40 years ago?

And besides, Alabama voters are stupid anyway.

Clyde said...

Yahr? Is it 'Talk Like A Pirate Day' again already?

And yes, many of the people in Flyover Country don't like the coastal "elites" sneering at them, and they're not stupid. If the media types like Kimmel don't like him, that's a badge of honor.

No one has ever seriously believed that the Alabamans were going to vote for anyone other than the Republican. It is other Republicans that don't want this to happen. Democrats are perfectly happy to watch a Republican child molester voted into the Senate. Solves some problems for them.

The Bar Buddhist says he doesn't talk about politics: he prefers to stay above the petty matters of man. But when he talks about the petty matters of man he is usually talking about current politics. And he talks about the petty matters of man a lot.

An example. He is for higher taxes for the rich: because Buddhism. You can probably extrapolate from there.

When it comes to politicians caught in scandals, he gets very enthused about the petty matters of man. Sometimes Buddhism understands and forgives the scoundrel, sometimes it will exact terrible karmic revenge. He is pretty sure on which will happen, depending on the politician. His Buddhism is pretty consistent that way, if it really isn't consistent with Buddhism.

My guess is that his Buddhism primarily helps with his not getting laid. The universe has reasons. Sometimes when get gets really drunk he talks about becoming a Guru. Because chicks dig Gurus, I believe is the thinking. I thought that the chicks-digging-gurus was pretty much a Sixties Thing. Although his head is still pretty much in the Sixties. Even though he was in grade school at the time.

He could consider becoming a yoga instructor: he might have better chances in today's world. But he is not nearly limber enough for yoga. And he wants the limber girls.

I live in Alabama (Huntsville) and have never liked Roy Moore. He's a grandstander and self-promoter. I don't know if the allegations against him are true or not. I do believe in the presumption of innocence and at this point, nothing has been proven against him. I do see Democrats who've defended their own with proven records of bad behavior towards women (JFK, Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Al Franken, John Conyers, to name just a few) while demanding we discard Roy Moore on the basis of allegations. Their double standards are noted.

To me, this election is coming down to deciding whom I distrust the least - Roy Moore or the press. At the moment, I'm leaning towards Moore. The press has a long history of bias, selective coverage, and lies when it comes to covering elections. If Moore loses, you can bet your mortgage payment that many other Republicans in future races will suddenly have "credible" accusers coming forward in the days before an election. So, I'm likely to vote for Roy Moore. Afterwards, I'll go home, take a shower, and hope to get the stench of this election off of me. I'll likely use a lot of mouthwash to get the taste out of my mouth as well.

As for asshats like Jimmy Kimmel, he is making it easier to make this decision. Personally, I've never seen his show because I work for a living and have to get up in the morning.

Sweet Home Alabama was a good hearted portrayal of Alabamans. But that is rare. The certainty that Alabamans are Neanderthals unfit for social acceptance is a reliable tool the Yankee pols have used to incite northern voters for 150 years. And not only that, southerners talk funny too.

But Alabamans are used to it. It's already baked in, as Wall Street guys like to say. We enjoy watching the trouble Yankees relocating to Atlanta have when discovering our culture is nicer and more open than the one they left.

But Moore is appealing to the goodness in people. And that spooks Kimmel and Hollywood with a fear that has them near insane. Bible Belt Goodness seems to Hollywood like the heart of darkness. Southerners laugh at that and say we are too busy to hate, but we also like to remind our critics that Delta is ready when you are.

There was an overweight guy with bad hair who used to come to the bar regularly. I realize overweight and bad hair doesn't narrow things down too much, but I need to retain plausibly deniability. So: there was an overweight guy with bad hair who used to come to the bar regularly.

He would occasionally talk to the regulars -- about sports, mostly -- but he pretty much kept to himself. Read a book. Seemed like spy novels, mostly. Oh yeah: acne scars.

Then the rumor went round. He was, evidently, a child molester. Just because people frequent bars doesn't mean they don'y dislike child molesters as much as everyone else. If that is what you were thinking. Probably not what you were thinking, I don't know.

So: child molester. details vary, as the details in rumors often do. One kid, several kids. Various ages of the children given. A lot of people believed he sodomized the children: maybe that is why I pointed out the acne scars.

He talked to one guy at the bar he was closest to, although not really that close. The child molester thing was a charge his ex-wife made when they were in the midst of their divorce. He said she was cheating on him, so threw back an accusation to make him seem like he was the bad guy.

This story got around, too. A lot of the guys at the bar have ex-wives -- go figure -- and they pretty much can see their own ex-wife being mad enough to do that kind of shit. But the rumors still went around. Being accused of being a child molester: it is like getting sprayed by a skunk in which you can never get rid of the scent. Whether it is true or not.

I don't know if it was true or not. If I had to guess, I would say it wasn't true. He didn't seem like that kind of guy. But them most of them probably don't seem like that kind of guy. Which is the problem, really.

The civil war proceeds an escalates.
Its not really politicians vs politicians, or pundits vs pundits, but peoples vs peoples.

Anyway, its not surprising that you get tribal TV shows.

The interesting battle here is not about the content but the communication channels, the venues for this partisan programming. The liberals have the strategic heights here. They control nearly all that comes over broadcast licenses or cable and thereby control content. There can be no right-wing Kimmell, such a thing would not be permitted.

The new media is likewise being consolidated into a few giant liberal controlled monopolies. The constant suppression and harassment of conservatives on Youtube (which has been a serious competitor to traditional TV) and Twitter is a consequence.

Trumps retweet of the British videos is significant. The powers that be do not want a free flow of inconvenient information. The point is to suppress and manage information so as to suppress opposition to those in power. Trump showed just how far the PTB will go to suppress speech - they will jail people, given the chance.

This is a war of the public against their would-be masters, of liberty against despotism.

My friend was married to the niece of a deceased nationally known mob boss, but the couple has always been legit. Long story shot, the FBI tapped the office and pay phones. Seems their target was a distant relative of the wife's who was using the pay phones to make book, gambling. The target used pay phones all over town. The phone taps contained no evidence against my friend, but the FBI hauled him into a Grand Jury where he testifies that he's not surprised the distant relative is involved, but he has no knowledge of the illegal enterprise. There's no proof my friend did anything wrong, but he spends a year in Leavenworth for contempt of court and obstruction of justice. The real criminals copped a plea when the pay phone taps were played, they admitted that my friend wasn't involved and my friend was released.
His business run by his stay at home wife was destroyed, he spent two years living like a refugee to pay off vendors, he made the restaurant prosperous again and got rid of the pay phones.

The FBI is a bag of dicks.

The fact that ARM constantly posts negative stories about Republicans, and never once, to the best of my recollection, has posted one critical of Democrats, while claiming to be neutral ("It's just that the Democrats are always right every single time!")says he's a liar. Never mind anything else he says.

But he's right. Republicans in Alabama have handed the Democrats a weapon. However, the Democrats were going to do what the Democrats were going to do, regardless.

Forest Gump was a positive portrayal of Alabama. Well, mostly.

The same can be said for "My Cousin Vinny". I think it holds up better than Forest Gump but just about everyone I've met in Alabama loves both movies. We can laugh at ourselves here and have plenty of reasons to do so.

IMO, Alabaman's don't give two hoots in hell about Kimmel one way or another. These entertainers aren't nearly as influential as they--and the media--seem to think they are.

For the record, I have consistently been negative about the Clintons and most of the Democrat leadership but I find the level of hatred for these people by some here veers into insanity and can't see much point in adding fuel to the dumpster fire.

On the other hand, there is an equally insane willingness to assign purity to the Republican side, unrelated to any known reality. A little reality check is always healthy.

ARM: Presumably they have at least some insider information on the issue.

Assumes facts not in evidence.

Maybe they're just afraid.

FullMoon said...

Ya know what would be really funny? A few women accusing Kimmel of harassing them back in the '90's. Maybe recovered memories, or something. It may have happened. Easy to imagine women keeping quiet at the time in order to further their carrer, or out of fear of being black listed.
He is in show business, he is a liberal.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

tim in vermont said...

Any time I veer from reality by making claims that you can prove to be objectively untrue about the dumpster fire that is the Clintons, please do me the mitzvah of pointing it out with supporting evidence.

Kyzer SoSay said...

FullMoon, keep in mind that Kimmel co-hosted "The Man Show" on Comedy Central. How difficult would it be to imagine that one of those "girls on trampolines" or one of their racy, scantily clad skit extras might have had an encounter with Kimmel that went about as well as Al Franken's skit rehearsal with that model/radiohost on the USO tour?

Not saying I want a false accusation to arise for peddling, but if there was ever a situation where a real case of harrassment could have erupted, that seems like prime territory. Although maybe being the star of a late night show on the then-nascent Comedy Central channel wasn't enough to inflate one's ego to the point of unrestricted groping.

tim in vermont said...

The Congressional Office of Compliance paid out just under $100,000 in taxpayer funds to two male staffers to settle sexual harassment claims against disgraced former Democratic New York Rep. Eric Massa, according to a new report.

Kimmel says he is Christian, having made his first communion and confirmation.

Is that a Christian thing, or just a Catholic thing?

Friend claimed Christians worship Jesus and Catholics worship saints. As a "Catholic", that surprised me. Looking back, fairly certain we kids were dropped off at church so parents could have some alone time on Sundays. They were always in a good mood when they came to pick us up after mass.

Liked the incense, costumes and Latin. Priest in costume swinging a holey ball on a chain full of burning incense, smoke coming out, talking in strange language. Pretty darn mysterious to a kid.

No one doubts the ability of the Democrats to claim holier than thou status. We all know that it's a total lie, especially when we see things like Democrat Matt Lauer kidnapping and raping women in his office while at the very same time acting all "shocked, shocked" at Bill O'Reilly asking a girl on a date. Bill Clinton raped women, and speaking of child molesting: how many times did your hero bill Clinton fly on the "Lolita express" ARM? Curious how you leftists completely ignore that! Oh, and you gave standing ovations to Roman Polanski. And Gary Stubbs. And didn't current senator Bob Menendez,D-New Jersey, also fly to central America to get some of that young girl action?

Yet you enthusiastically support him, ARM! Ain't no sex crime to great for a Democrat--it's all good! That's the left's motto!

Curious how NAMBLA is a leftist thing that no democrat ever bothers denouncing either, speaking of child sex crimes. In fact, how many liberals are out there earnestly promoting pedophilia? Ask Slate, which published articles calling for its legalization.... and the vast yawning indifference from you and Inga.

There is only one party that promotes child molestation, and that's your side, ARM. As for Moore--all those allegations have pretty much been proven wrong, haven't they? Of course, you won't recognize that. it hurts the narrative, after all....

I'm glad you don't support NAMBLA ARM, I really am.

That said, why hasn't your party driven them off the planet? Because NAMBLA certainly supports your party and your politicians. And as I recall under the "David Duke" standard you and yours uses, doesn't that make all of you guilty?

Still, you are right: NAMBLA is generally shunned by much of your party. But that leaves no excuse for the rabid enthusiastic support for Roman Polanski, Bill Clinton, Gary Stubbs, and more. Anthony Weiner did get tossed (honestly, who expected that? Democrats ALWAYS support their sexual perverts! See Ted Kennedy).

I lived in Louisiana for a time, and the Democrat candidate for governor boasted once that he would win unless he was caught with a dead girl or a live boy.... implicating that everyone would be ok with him and a live girl. And he was right, too: the fact he had his wife as well as his mistress campaigning for him openly didn't prevent his victory.

He couldn't run for reelection though.... the Feds put him in jail for corruption while governor. No one was surprised by that either.

I'm not a fan of Roy Moore, but he has sophisticated views consistent with the Declaration that our most fundamental rights are grounded, not in convention, but in God. (Sophisticated doesn't mean right, just that they are well-considered.) It doesn't surprise me that conservative Christians would crave a politician who says these things openly and proudly. Kimmel's efforts to say that Moore is unChristian will appeal only to his own fans who probably are not religious but think they understand what Christianity is "really" about.

The Democrats support molesting unconscious and conscious women.

The Democrats support raping... rape-raping adolescent boys and girls.

The Democrats support transgender conversion therapy (e.g. homosexual, crossover), including indoctrination, and medical corruption, targeting prepubescent and adolescent boys and girls.

The Democrats support sexualizing underage boys and girls.

The Democrats support Slut Walks and other activism that degrade women's dignity.

The Democrats support "friendships with benefits" including "casting couch" relationships.

The Democrats support abortion rites that place conception before choice, thereby denying women's agency.

The Democrats support denying lives deemed unworthy, inconvenient, or profitable. The consequences of which are not contained, but are a progressive debasement of human life.

The Republicans are not Pro-Choice. They cannot deny due process and presume guilt. They cannot support justice through trial by press (e.g. bullhorn prosecutions). They cannot accept one piece of evidence (preponderance of allegations) in order to convict someone. They cannot deem someone nonviable and abort them for convenience or partisan leverage.

I cut the vid off about a minute in.

It's difficult to see Kimmel trying to be high a mighty about a man merely accused of harassing women sexually. Kimmel stardom begin with his Comedy Central program "The Man Show". I don't have a problem with "The Man Show", but it was hardly a TV show that treated women with respect. Indeed here is a part of the Comedy Central description of the program:
"It's a place where men can come together Look at the cans on this chick named Heather Juggy girls on trampolines Time to loosen those blue jeans It's The Man Show!"

Moore is accused of boorish behavior to women, perhaps criminal, yet nobody has filed a criminal complaint. On the other hand, Kimmel is on tape after tape showing his boorish behavior to women. If I am not to pardon Moore for his behavior, how then can I excuse Kimmel's behavior. That would seem irrational, unless and until someone actually provides sufficient evidence that Moore actually committed the acts for which he's been accused.

You would think on an issue like this, and Moore opening the door by referring to "Christian values", a competent opponent could hit it for extra bases if not out of the park. But Kimmel, his writers and his audience snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on this one (I'm not predicting the whole election). I assume they are not just non-religious but mostly anti-religious, at least anti-evangelical and anti-fundamentalist, and didn't even see the opportunity they were presented.

exiledonmainstreet, green-eyed devil said...

actually, the Wiki list list of prominent Alabamians is quite long and includes musicians as well as writers.

why were so many early rock and roll stars Southerners? because the genre was born out of the mix of blues, country, and jazz. and for a section of the country routinely mocked as uncultured, the South sure has produced a lot of writers. the contributions of Southern authors to American literature, from Faulkner to Walker Percy, is at least as important as the contributions of Jewish writers. American cuisine would be a lot poorer without southern dishes.

and no, that's not just because of the contributions of blacks. it's the cultural interplay of blacks and whites over a frequently tortured history that helped create jazz, jambalaya, Ralph Ellison and Robert Penn Warren and Flannery O'Connor, Hank Williams, Elvis, Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson and Harper Lee. None of them could have come from north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

only a willfully ignorant bigot would ignore that.

Elvis was born in Mississippi - a state that may or may not be as backward as Alabama but at least had the good sense and distinction to never hoist upon our country a man as despicable and divisive and destructive as George Wallace and all that came with that.

Most of the culinary contributions of the South were ultimately Creole and French and African in origin - not "white," racist, slaveowner Brittano-Hibernian.

Folk's contributions to rock are acceptable, and not in any sense exclusively Alabaman. Probably moreso backwoods Kentucky, TN, Piedmont, etc. Although we'll take Lynyrd Skynyrd, if it makes you happy.

Southern writers are as overrated as most other American writers - whatever ethnicity. The only American writers that really mattered were Twain, with Melville a somewhat stable second, and then the New England writers and metaphysicians a distant third - Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau... as well as their poetically-inclined neighbors - Whitman and Dickinson. And of course there was also Poe - distinct enough to contribute much more to the canon than the two novelist nobodies you mention. And possibly Fitzgerald.

For whatever reason that you mention Jews, I'm not sure that any really contributed all that much to American literature, either. Perhaps IB Singer - a Pole, who basically committed to page what was already a substantial body of pre-existing folklore from his own Old World and even older world of religious mythologies. Notable, but not American. And not anything to closely compare to the titan of Twain or even his immediate circle of literary rivals.

But it's nice to see you come down from atop your Wisconsin perch to play Southern Affirmation Carpetbagger this morning. It must get to be a tiring role. But at least you can stick up for all the federal dependency that these regional, bullshitting anti-government types seem to need.

So you can see why Toothless would have hated segregation, as well as slavery: if there's anyone more devoted to individual liberty than the Toothless State-fellator . . . . So, on the Statist Scale (aka the Coercion Meter), with 0 being libertarian anarchists and 10 being people like Mao, Hitler, etc., where, "pound for pound" and en masse, would you place the average Alabaman? Where would you place yourself? Would it be (as I suspect) closer to 10 than the average Alabaman, or closer t0 0?

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

State fellator William Chadwick extols Alabama - the state with one of the longest and most restrictive and least open to home (i.e. local/municipal) rule constitutions in the world.

The Constitution of the State of Alabama is the basic governing document of the U.S. state of Alabama. It was adopted in 1901 and is the sixth constitution that the state has had.

At 310,296 words, the document is 12 times longer than the average state constitution, 44 times longer than the U.S. Constitution, and is the longest and most amended constitution still operative anywhere in the world. The English version of the Constitution of India, the longest national constitution, is about 117,369 words long, a third of the length of Alabama's.

The constitution gives the Alabama Legislature the power to administer most counties directly, with only a few counties having even limited home rule. This supported provisions that essentially disenfranchised most blacks and poor whites, and further limited local autonomy. As a result, about 90 percent of the document's length, as of 2017, comes from its 926 amendments. About 75 percent of the amendments cover only a single county or city, and some deal with salaries of specific officials (e.g. Amendment 480 and the Greene County probate judge). This gives Alabama a large number of constitutional officers. It also makes it very difficult for residents of counties to solve their own problems.

Any additional stupidities and ignorance you had in store to impress us with?
