"They were as far left and right as you can be. We had heard of no friction whatsoever other than they just were difference of political opinion."

"Both of them walked their little dogs at about a mile and a half circle, a nice little dog trot. I'd see them out walking, maybe they might stop and speak with each other."

Says a neighbor of Rand Paul's, quoted in "Attack leaves Sen. Rand Paul with 5 cracked ribs" (CBS News).

Police are saying nothing about the motive for the attack, but we do know that Paul was tackled from behind with "high velocity severe force." We can probably infer that the attacker — Rene Boucher — came onto Paul's property with an intent to attack him and surprised him and that it was not some kind of argument that arose and escalated in a face-to-face encounter.

Another thing we know is "Boucher is an anesthesiologist and a pain specialist." I'd want to look into whether Boucher had a drug problem.

I'd want to look into whether Boucher had a drug problem.

I was surprised to see that drug abuse amongst anesthesiologists is an issue going back several decades.

Doctor's death adds to cluster of fatal fentanyl cases

Two studies, one in 1993 and another 15 years later, found a high rate of drug use by anesthesiology residents compared with other specialties. Over 10 years, 80% of U.S. anesthesiology residency programs reported encountering impaired residents and 19% reported at least one pretreatment death.

"The drug of choice for anesthesiologists entering treatment was an opioid, with fentanyl and sufentanil topping the list," the 2008 study said.

The study attributes the high instance of drug abuse among anesthesiologists to access to powerfully addictive drugs, "relative ease" of being able to steal small amounts for personal use and stress of the workplace.

So you put a crack in my ribs like the crack in the Liberty Bell! You hear me?

Other Neighbor: [leans down to talk to Rand in a low voice] Hey. This is just between you and me, okay? I mean, forget all these other guys. But he did give you a pretty decent out. But it's your call.

That sounds....VERY LOW. Note the "10 years".

Apparently they don't have good numbers - from that same paper:

++

Subsequent studies have consistently differed from Talbott’s results.

Five years later, a study by Hughes, 5 found the rate of substance abuse in the anesthesia resident population to be no higher than that of other specialties. Interestingly, this same study showed higher rates of substance abuse among emergency medicine and psychiatry residents.

In 2000, Alexander published a study examining the cause-specific mortality risks of anesthesiologists which suggested that the rate of substance abuse among anesthesiologists does not differ from that observed in general internists and that both groups share a lower rate of substance abuse than the general population.

It looks as if for even minor assaultthe facts contradict the sentencing guidelines. If I read this correctly base level minor assault would be 7 if there was physical contact plus 2 for bodily injury.

Of course for certain government officers and employees the offense is a class D felony, class C if bodily injury occurs. Sentencing guideline is 10-25 years for a class C felony...

I see no mention of reduction of sentence for being a member of the correct political party.

Attacking your neighbor and breaking ribs is a real good way to lose status and money, even if your neighbor is not a US Senator. The medical staff of a hospital I used to work at moved very quickly to revoke the privileges of one physician who was charged with domestic abuse and another who was charged with battery. It used to be that physicians who got into hot water in one city could relocate and start anew in a different state fairly easily. Google Michael Swango, who might just be the most prolific serial killer in US history, and you will amazed by how much that guy got away with before he was finally arrested. It's not so easy any more.

Violent, impulsive and bad-tempered, yeah, that's the sort of guy everyone wants working the anesthesia machine when they go in for a bypass.

Bond has only one purpose, and that's to insure the released shows up in court. If the court considers the attacker not to be a flight risk, then a low bond or even ROR is appropriate. Bond is never meant to be punitive.

If the guy owns his own home and has ties to the community, then he's almost certain to show up for his 4th degree sidewalk-spitting court date.
If he had been charged with something more serious, a much higher bond would be appropriate, since one assumes he has the means to flee the jurisdiction if he wanted to...

In a year when Antifa promises to punch a Nazi, to bash the fasc?

It got funny watching the mental and verbal contortions the guy would go through to maintain the party line in the face of all facts and logic. Some speculated that he was a paid apparatchik of the DNC. He got so ridiculous some of us called him "Baghdad Jim" after the King of Party-Line Defenders, Baghdad Bob. (Bob as US tanks rolled into Baghdad: "The tide has turned! Allah has scattered the infidel army and Dear Leader has triumphed!")

Interestingly, BJ disappeared from the comments section the day after Trump was elected. Maybe he's resurfaced here under a different nom-de-guerre?

Here's hoping Freeman Hunt remains above the fray.

“U.S. sees 300 violent attacks inspired by far right every year“

“Despite the nation’s intense national focus on Islamic terrorism since 9/11, homegrown, right wing extremists have also killed dozens of Americans. The groups include white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups and anti-federalists militias. Since 2001, the number of violent attacks on U.S. soil inspired by far-right ideology has spiked to an average of more than 300 a year, according to a study by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.

A 2015 survey of U.S. law enforcement groups found they consider anti-government violent extremists to be a more severe threat than radicalized Muslims. And while jihadist terrorists have killed 95 people in the U.S. since 9/11, far-right extremists have killed 68 during the same time, including the car attack in Charlottesville. That’s according to data collected by our next guest, Peter Bergen, the director of the national security studies program for New America and a terrorism analyst for CNN.”

MSM lies. the neighbour was obviously planted by ANTIFA seventeen years ago.

Heh. There's always that one person in the neighborhood who spends a good deal of time worrying about his own yard and freaking out over other people's yards. Guess Paul's neighbor may have been that guy gone wild.

I can understand a love triangle leading to tragedy. There is a certain operatic grandeur to that. But to throw one's life away over, as www suggests, "a idiotic fight over landscaping" - sheesh.

No operatic grandeur to being pissed off because your neighbor cut down a tree. However, as Harvey Weinstein has shown, some old rich liberal dudes feel quite passionate about plants.

It could have been a very, very special tree.

Henry said...

“Sunsong was the only lefty here who condemned the attempted murder.”

That is absolutely correct and sunsong got a lot of praise for doing it, although condemning the attempted murder of people on a baseball field is something any decent human being should do automatically. Praising someone for condemning it is like praising a normal junior high kid for being able to dress herself. Sure, it's commendable, but it's also expected.

Except that leftists like Inga, ARM and Ritmo didn't, in fact, have the basic decency to do so. Inga is lying (as usual) now, or maybe she is senile and forgot, but nobody else has.

Inga, ARM and Ritmo are disgusting, heartless trash and deserve no respect from anybody.

Definitely I always believe a guys lawyer 100% in these matters.

CStanley said...

I dunno, both the apology and the stated reason for the dispute seem awfully self serving to me. Since the attacker would face stiffer penalties for a politically motivated attack, I'm not inclined to take his lawyer's statements about lawn disputes at face value,

I realize there have been other neighbors confirming that there were disputes about leaf blowing or whatever, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that the guy hated Paul both for his political positions and his landscaping habits (in fact the latter could be a proxy fight of sorts.)

Freeman Hunt said...

Nearby there was a man who told his friend that he never wanted to speak to him again because they disagreed about moving a branch out of the road. Same guy expressed great anger about leaves blowing from yard to yard. Some people get really upset about yard-related things.
